    Book Description

    Contributions from leading authorities in the field encompass the full range of current research. Several chapters focus on the structural features of the adenylyl cyclases; their regulation by G protein subunits, both both a and bg; protein protein kinases; and calcium ions. Given balanced consideration as well are the potential physiologic roles of adenylyl cyclases.

    Of special note is the presentation of a new technique -- simultaneous fluorescence radio imaging -- for studying cyclic AMP calcium kinetics in single living cells. Many believe that this innovative approach may help resolve the technical impasse that separates thinking about cAMP signaling from Ca2i signaling.

    An Authoratative synthesis and review of recent major research regarding the multiple forms and multiple regulation of these elementary signaling enzymes, Adenylyl Cyclases is vital reading for all researchers directly or indirectly involved in the field.

    5 out of 5 stars excelllent book - wish it was in print!.......2007-06-16

    My mom bought this book for my son several years ago at a small bookshop. It has been one of our favorites ever since. My son has enjoyed it from 4 years old to 11 and now his 3 and 4 year old brother and sister are enjoying it. This is one of the best. It is geology with a slight spritual undertone - I think anyway! I wish this book was available new to give as gifts.

    5 out of 5 stars Children are fascinated by this book!.......2001-04-09

    I enthusiastically recommend this book! Who knew that the journey of a rock through time was dramatic AND fascinating? When was the last time you considered how a simple rock came to be? This story is as educational as it is entertaining to the children who have read it in my home. I had a five-year-old guest for the weekend, and THIS is the book she wanted out of all the books in my library. She was drawn to this rock and cared what happened to it. It was fun for her to "find" the rock in every beautiful illustration. Every time I read it to the younger children, I learn a little more, too!

    5 out of 5 stars A Journey to Enjoy.......2001-04-04

    *Earthsteps: A Rock's Journey Through Time* is one of those rare children's books that an adult can also enjoy reading over and over. The illustrations complement the thoughtful and intelligent text, making it a journey to enjoy and to learn from at the same time. My 14 year old read it eagerly, as did my 11 year old. I expected that because they are both voracious readers who have a geologist father, but what I was delighted by was the excited interest of the 5 through 9 year olds to whom I read it at the school where I substitute teach regularly. I highly recommend this fine work to everyone.

    5 out of 5 stars geology made fun.......2001-04-03

    as someone working with geologists and geology as a career, i found earthsteps to be a fun way to introduce this subject to children. most children are not exposed to earth science, so a book of this calibur should be a part of all elementary school libraries.

    5 out of 5 stars Great educational book for kids.......2001-03-28

    This is a very colorful and educational book for kids. It's a fun way for children to learn about geology!

      Book Description

      Effective management of a water well requires that the water well can meet a set of performance indicators. These can include criteria related to water quality, yield, economics and asset life. Water well deterioration due to fouling and corrosion impacts the ability of a well system to meet these criteria. Managing well deterioration processes involves understanding the nature of these processes and having in place water well maintenance strategies to deal with them. Managing water well deterioration fills a need within the literature for an academically based informative text that incorporates practical advice. The focus on a problem-oriented approach to diagnosing well deterioration makes the book a useful practical handbook. It integrates concepts from hydrogeology, hydrochemistry and microbiology to give a thorough understanding water well deterioration processes. Scenarios have been developed to illustrate common causes of water well fouling. A feature of book is the treatment of both corrosion and fouling issues in depth. Case studies are used to illustrate approaches to the diagnosis and remediation of well deterioration. These scientifically oriented perspectives on water well deterioration are embedded within a management framework to provide a comprehensive approach to dealing with water well deterioration.

      Soil contamination . . . public lands . . . surface and groundwater pollution . . . coastal erosion . . . global warming. Have we reached the limits of this planet's ability to provide for us? If so, what can we do about it?

      These vital questions are addressed in The Earth Around Us, a unique collection of thirty-one essays by a diverse array of today's foremost scientist-writers. Sharing an ability to communicate science in a clear and engaging fashion, the contributors explore Earth's history and processes--especially in relation to today's environmental issues--and show how we, as members of a global community, can help maintain a livable planet. The narratives in this collection are organized into seven parts that describe:

      Earth's time and history and the place of people on it;
      Views of nature and the ethics behind our conduct on Earth;
      Resources for the twenty-first century, such as public lands, healthy forests and soils, clean ground and surface waters, and fluctuating coastlines;
      Ill-informed local manipulations of landscapes across the United States; Innovative solutions to environmental problems that arise from knowledge of the interactions between living things and the Earth's air, water, and soil;
      Natural and human-induced global scale perturbations to the earth system;
      Our responsibility to people and all other organisms that live on Earth.

      Never before has such a widely experienced group of prominent earth scientists been brought together to help readers understand how earth's environment works. Driven by the belief that earth science is, and should be, an integral part of everyday life, The Earth Around Us empowers all of us to play a more educated and active part in the search for a sustainable future for our planet and its inhabitants.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent science compilation!.......2000-06-07

      This is an excellent example of science writing at its best. The essays are well-written and well-organized, and will appeal to a wide audience. As an earth scientist, I appreciate the detail that the authors provide, but the clarity of the book makes it accessible to readers of all levels and backgrounds. I highly recommend this book as a worthy addition to any book collection.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend.......2000-04-18

      I absolutely loved this book. This book gives you the rare opportunity to hear a stunning array of scientists tell you about your surroundings in language that is accessible and informative to amateurs as well as experts in the geosciences. As a geologist I feel like this book was written just for me, but if you are at all curious about the environment around you and it's future, this is a great book to start with. The essays in this book cover a large breadth of pertinent global issues, and backs up fascinating narratives with sound scientific reasoning. It answered questions I had, and introduced me to new issues and environmental crises I hadn't considered until now. My family and friends can be certain that they will be receiving a copy for Christmas.

      5 out of 5 stars Science....In terms I could understand!.......2000-04-06

      I really enjoyed reading The Earth Around Us. It answered so many questions I had regarding the earth processes that are relevant to environmental questions. As a person who lives on the shore of a large lake, I was especially interested to read about what types of erosion I might expect along my shoreline. All the essays in this book were short, fascinating, and very accessible. I loved `hearing' scientists speak in language I could understand about practical environmental issues. I'm recommending this book to all my friends and plan to give it as gifts to people I know who are interested in science and environmental issues.

        Book Description

        This book tells you where beach sand comes from, how waves are formed and how they break and move sand down the coast, how "works of man" have blocked this movement and caused beach erosion, and what can be done to save the beaches for future generations of Americans. A three-part prescription for healthy beaches is proposed: "backing off", "bypassing sand", and "beach nourishment". So if you love waves and beaches, and care about the future of your favorite beach spot, then read this book while you enjoy the beach.

        I ordered a copy of this book iniitially because I was interested in buying beach property along the Alabama coast and I knew the author had done some extensive work in studying the beach erosion problems down there. I was expecting a somewhat technical manual that would be hard to understand. I was delighted with the easy to read, very interesting way in which Dr. Douglass highlights the causes and solutions to beach erosion. Honestly, I would pick this book up if you are in the slightest bit interested in learning more about America's beaches. Great pictures too. I read it in one sitting. My highest recommendation!

          Book Description

          Structures built in or near rivers and other channels can be vulnerable to scour around their foundations. If the depth of the scour becomes significant, the stability of the foundations may be endangered, with a consequent risk of damage or failure of the structure. There have been several bridge failures, resulting in transport disruption, economic loss and, on occasion, loss of life. The factors influencing scour are complex and vary according to the type of structure. Protection for preventing scour needs to be designed to withstand the flow forces imposed on them and have to be practical to build and install, while minimizing adverse environmental effects. This book covers the entire Scour Technology area and is prepared by one of the leading experts on the subject.

          This really is a great model for turning informational text to graphic organizers! With large font on one page and the same information truncated and displayed in a variety of graphic organizers on the facing page this is a great introduction to science content or how to select inforamtion and organize it into a graphic organizer.
          This is a short book. There are ten topics covered in the alternating g.o./text format, table of contents, and a glossary and an index.
          I will look for similar formats as introductions to my science untis.

              Book Description

              This is a timely volume in view of the considerable interest currently shown in the preservation of our cultural heritage and the extensive and growing literature on the subject. Unfortunately, the latter is to be found in a wide variety of published sources, some aimed at a very specific readership. The present volume draws together a spectrum of biodeterioration work from across the world to provide an overview of the materials examined and the methodologies employed to elucidate the nature of the problems, as well as an extensive and current bibliographical resource on lichen biodeterioration.

              Generally, we do not think of rock surfaces as particularly conducive to the growth and development of living things. Occasionally, we may encounter grasses or forbs or even more rarely a small shrub or stunted tree growing from a crack in a large boulder or rock wall; but for most people, rock is perceived as dry, sterile, impenetrable, and generally uninviting. However, to the experienced eye rock surfaces are often teeming with life – lichens, bryophytes, a host of small invertebrate animals, as well as a vast array of microscopic organisms including bacteria, cyanobacteria, algae and non-lichenized fungi. The longevity and structural stability of most rocks superficially suggest that rock surface inhabitants are benign; however, slowly and steadily all rock dwelling organisms contribute to the relentless decomposition of rock surfaces – augmented by the natural physical forces associated with changing seasons, weather patterns, and in some localized settings the caustic effects of air pollution. Rock dwelling communities vary in complexity and composition depending on the specific structural and chemical features of the rock. Even human manipulated or manufactured stone supports to some degree a living community – and herein are found the real issues and concerns related to biodeterioration of rock substrata. In a natural setting biodecomposition of rock is accepted as normal and even desirable – integral to the process of soil development; however, in the human environment biodeterioration of monuments, buildings, artwork, statues and gravestones is counted as a serious problem. Even in natural settings, culturally significant prehistoric and historic rock art is subject to the same processes of biodeterioration.

              In this volume the editors have compiled current papers from leading experts dealing with various issues related to biodeterioration of rock substrata. Topics range from biodeterioration effects on prehistoric rock art as well as culturally significant, historic rock structures. This is the first treatment of the subject of biodeterioration that includes a careful consideration of the role of related disciplines including geology, archaeology, crystallography, cultural conservation and resource management. This combination of disciplines makes this book valuable not only as a solid scientific treatise but equally important as a serious resource for evaluating both impact processes and preservation options related to biodeterioration of culturally significant rock substrata.
