Timber Production and Biodiversity Conservation in Tropical Rain Forests (Cambridge Studies in Applied Ecology and Resource Management)
Andrew Grieser Johns Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521572827 |
Book Description
Timber production is often the most economic form of land use in areas of tropical forest: forest preservation is rarely so. The area of tropical forest reserved for timber production exceeds that of National Parks and other preserved areas by a ratio of at least 8:1. Although often poorly managed to date, production forests have the potential to support a high percentage of natural forest biodiversity. They have a vital role to play in conservation strategies. This book attempts to bridge the current gap between conservation requirements and commercial interests, indicating the possibilities for integrated management of tropical forests. The aim is to develop a justification and practical approach for the management of production forest as a supplement to totally-protected forest in the conservation of tropical biodiversity.

Group Sequential Methods: Applications to Clinical Trials (Chapman & Hall/Crc Interdisciplinary Statistics Series)
Christopher Jennison , and Bruce W. Turnbull Manufacturer: Chapman & Hall/CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0849303168 |
Book Description
Group sequential methods answer the needs of clinical trial monitoring committees who must assess the data available at an interim analysis. These interim results may provide grounds for terminating the study-effectively reducing costs-or may benefit the general patient population by allowing early dissemination of its findings. Group sequential methods provide a means to balance the ethical and financial advantages of stopping a study early against the risk of an incorrect conclusion. Group Sequential Methods with Applications to Clinical Trials describes group sequential stopping rules designed to reduce average study length and control Type I and II error probabilities. The authors present one-sided and two-sided tests, introduce several families of group sequential tests, and explain how to choose the most appropriate test and interim analysis schedule. Their topics include placebo-controlled randomized trials, bio-equivalence testing, crossover and longitudinal studies, and linear and generalized linear models. Research in group sequential analysis has progressed rapidly over the past 20 years. Group Sequential Methods with Applications to Clinical Trials surveys and extends current methods for planning and conducting interim analyses. It provides straightforward descriptions of group sequential hypothesis tests in a form suited for direct application to a wide variety of clinical trials. Medical statisticians engaged in any investigations planned with interim analyses will find this book a useful and important tool.

Kenneth J. Beers Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521859719 |
Book Description
Suitable for a first year graduate course, this textbook unites the applications of numerical mathematics and scientific computing to the practice of chemical engineering. Written in a pedagogic style, the book describes basic linear and nonlinear algebric systems all the way through to stochastic methods, Bayesian statistics and parameter estimation. These subjects are developed at a level of mathematics suitable for graduate engineering study without the exhaustive level of the theoretical mathematical detail. The implementation of numerical methods in MATLAB is integrated within each chapter and numerous examples in chemical engineering are provided, with a library of corresponding MATLAB programs. This book will provide the graduate student with essential tools required by industry and research alike. Supplementary material includes solutions to homework problems set in the text, MATLAB programs and tutorial, lecture slides, and complicated derivations for the more advanced reader. These are available online at www.cambridge.org/9780521859714.Customer Reviews:
