Book Description

All about the Mediterranean Diet, from guiding principles to specific recipes, for people who want to improve their health by improving their eating habits. Most people know that a Mediterranean-style diet is "good for them," but many lack the information that determines the diet's success. The Mediterranean Heart Diet does what most doctors who recommend the diet don't: spells out which foods are "out" and which are "in," and why.

Doctors recommend a Mediterranean eating style to thousands who are diagnosed each year with heart disease because it is "heart-healthy"-it promotes lower saturated-fat consumption, and helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

It is an all-purpose style of eating that also benefits those at risk of developing certain cancers and those with a diabetic condition, because it is high in antioxidant-rich foods and whole grains. The Mediterranean Heart Diet not only provides a full range of satisfying recipes but also covers the science behind the diet's health benefits. Readers learn to create their own healthful eating plans and establish new habits.

More than 140 delicious recipes are included, from satisfying Lentil and Broccoli Soup to tangy Halibut in Citrus Sauce. All recipes feature nutritional analysis by serving, including food exchanges.

1 out of 5 stars Faulty Information.......2007-07-24

This is an absolutley "terrible" book. It first tells you what the Mediterranean Diet was many years and and how it is so helpful - THEN it tells you how to make bread with WHITE ALL-PURPOSE BREAD FLOUR. WHAT A STUPID BOOK. Then it goes on to tell you how to update the diet with new technology learned over the last century. THAT IS NOT WHAT THE AUTHOR SHOULD BE DOING = THEY SHOULD BE TELLING YOU WHAT THE DIET "WAS" NOT WHAT THE AUTHOR THINKS IT SHOULD BE. And as an added "insult" they tell you to stop smoking. Do you think the Mediterranean"s "Smoked". Of course, and they were living longer than anybody on earth. What arrogance.

4 out of 5 stars Great Heart Diet.......2007-07-16

This is a diet that the average person can live with and lose weight with for the rest of their lives. It isn't fast but steady, you're not hungry and you can have veggies and fruits, and pastas, chicken & fish. And occassionaly dessert and red meat. I only wish there were more sample menues or more about portions. I am losing weight at about 2 or 3 lbs. weeks and I love it!

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!!.......2007-04-14

I bought 3 different cook books at the same time. This is my favorite. The walnut topped portabello mushrooms are to die for. Everything in this book that I've tried so far has been excellent.

2 out of 5 stars no title.......2007-03-27

Not for people raised in the deep south and who have limited access to the ingredients in the receipes. Instead of buying this book just do what the doctors are always telling you. Cut down or out on red meat and eat more vegetables. Substitute fish or fowl in place of the red meat. Also do as the Apostle Paul said in the Bible, "take a little wine for thy stomach's sake". Then get out and walk more.

5 out of 5 stars Healthy eating.......2007-02-19

I love the food. I never realized there were so many different Herb and spices and what they were for. I always used Garlic salt instead of real Garlic. I replaced our regular salt with sea salt. Our cooking oil is now extra virgin olive oil. I am not only enjoying great food but healthier meals and I feel great.

5 out of 5 stars Should not be labeled "diet".......2006-08-19

This is a great book for a person with any type of heart problems or who wants to lower their risk of heart problems. It is not really geared to losing weight, but to being healthier. It was recommended by my husband's doctor and is great for heart disease.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-02-28

I love books and am always looking at new and healthy diets. This book is a good book if you are looking for a sensible diet and good recipes.

4 out of 5 stars Miami Mediterranean Diet is a Must-Read for Optimal Health.......2005-12-13

Think of this: Greek men have 90% less heart attacks than American men. Yes, I said 90% less. Statistics like this have led scientists to spend more than 20 years studying the Mediterranean diet, Dr. Ozner, a cardiologist based in Miami, summarizes the enormous benefits of this lifestyle in his book. He offers many patient tested (& patient suggested) recipes, all delicious. The basic foods in this diet are pasta, fresh vegetables, beans, whole grains, cold-water fish, nuts, olives, tomatoes, olive oil and red wine. Simple, but rarely followed in America. The Mediterranean diet is rich in benefits, inexpensive and there's an added benefit: weight loss. The book is a winner, easy to read and highly recommended.

Concise and easy to read with lots of examples--obviously a competant Professor writing here. Reviews and ties together all the studies about the Mediterranean diet vis a vi the "French Paradox" whereby the French eat a diet high in cholesterol and fat and yet have a low heart attack rate. By the end of the book the reader will fully understand all the risk factors and their solutions for heart disease whether he lives in Peoria or Paris.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing recipes.......2000-05-30

Olive oil has long been an indispensable ingredient in my cooking, and I cannot imagine being without it. As might be expected, I am extremely fond of Mediterranean food, which I find to be utterly delicious and satisfying. I am sorry to say, however, that I was quite disappointed with the choice of recipes in this book, which presents a very limited view of a great cuisine. Although the text is well written and easy to understand, the same cannot be said for the recipes, which lack clear and detailed directions. The dietary wisdom and practical advice offered by "Olive Oil Cookery" is good as far as it goes, but in my opinion two other books, "Low-Fat Lies" and "The Omega Diet," explain more fully the science validating the Mediterranean diet.

5 out of 5 stars Mediterranean Food is Delicious!.......1999-02-13

"Olive Oil Cookery: The Mediterranean Diet" offers some of the most delicious Mediterranean recipes I have ever tasted. The recipes were easy to prepare. The diversity of Mediterranean cuisine has something to offer to all food lovers. And with olive oil as its main ingredient, it is one of the healthiest! I highly recommend this book.

                Book Description

Toward the end of the twentieth century, it became evident to professionals working within the meterological arena that the world's climate system was showing signs of change that could not be adequately explained in terms of natural variation. Since that time there has been an increasing recognition that the climate system is changing as a result of human industries and lifestyles, and that the outcomes may prove catastrophic to the world's escalating population. Compiled by an international team formed under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Climate: Into the 21st Century features an unrivalled collection of essays by the world's leading meteorological experts. These fully integrated contributions provide a perspective of the global climate system across the twentieth century, and describe some of the most arresting and extreme climatic events and their effects that have occurred during that time. In addition, the book traces the development of our capabilities to observe and monitor the climate system, and outlines our understanding of the predictability of climate on time-scales of months and longer. It concludes with a summary of the prospects for applying the twentieth century climate experience in order to benefit society in the twenty-first century. Lavishly illustrated in color, Climate is an accessible acccount of the challenges that climate poses at the start of the twenty-first century. Filled with fascinating facts and diagrams, it is written for a wide audience and will captivate the general reader interested in climate issues, and will be a valuable teaching resource. William Burroughs is a successful science author of books on climate, including Weather (Time Life, 2000), and Climate Change: A Multidisciplinary Approach (2001), Does the Weather Really Matter? (1997) and The Climate Revealed (1999), all published by Cambridge University Press.

                  Book Description

This up-to-date and comprehensive electronic book on CD-ROM provides the finest collection of official federal documents available anywhere on the subject of paleoclimatology. Paleoclimatology is the study of climate prior to the widespread availability of records of temperature, precipitation and other instrumental data. There is particular interest in the last few thousand years because this is the best dated, best sampled part of the past climatic record and can help us establish the range of natural climatic variability in a period prior to global-scale human influence. Environmental recorders are used to estimate past climatic conditions and thus extend our understanding far beyond the 100+ year instrumental record. "Proxy" records of climate have been preserved in tree rings, locked in the skeletons of tropical coral reefs, extracted as ice cores from glaciers and ice caps, and buried in laminated sediments from lakes and the ocean.

This research is enormously important to understanding our current climate and the possible changes caused by greenhouse gases and global warming. Research involves computer climate reconstructions and physical investigations into ice cores, coral, tree rings, insects, and pollen. This research is providing important information about glacial and carbon cycles.

Paleoclimatologists use clues from natural "proxy" sources such as tree rings, ice cores, corals, and ocean and lake sediments to understand natural climate variability. NOAA Paleoclimatology operates the World Data Center for Paleoclimatology and the Applied Research Center for Paleoclimatology, with the goal to provide data and information scientists need to understand natural climate variability as well as future climate change. International partners include the Past Global Changes Program of the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme, and the World Data Center system of the International Council of Scientific Unions. Topics covered in this extensive material include:

Borehole Data * Climate Forcing * Climate Reconstructions (Estimates of past climate conditions) * Corals & Sclerosponges * Fauna * Historical Data * Ice Cores * Insect * Lake Levels * Loess * Paleoclimatic Modeling * Paleofire * Paleolimnology * Paleomagnetism * Paleoceanography * Plant Macrofossils * Pollen * Speleothems * Tree Ring * Other Collections * Papers and reviews on conferences, scientific goals, milestones, Paleo Perspective on Abrupt Climate Change, North American Drought Paleo Perspective, Paleo Perspective on Global Warming. In addition to the comprehensive coverage of paleoclimatology, there is coverage of the U.S. Global Change Research Information Office (GCRIO) and NOAA programs on climate change and global warming.

In all, this CD-ROM has over 24,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Apple Macintosh systems. Reader software is included on the CD.

Our news and educational discs are privately compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Adobe Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed, searched by finding specific words, or printed without untold hours of tedious research and downloading. Vast archives of important public domain government information that might otherwise remain inaccessible are available for instant review no matter where you are.
