Capitol Hill (DC) (Images of America)
ASIN: 1589802284 |
Book Description
Capitol Hill is a virtual museum of nineteenth-century American architecture and is the largest Victorian neighborhood in the country. The Majesty of Capitol Hill captures the vibrancy of this historic community and its many architectural styles, including Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque, and Classic Revival. Nowhere else in Washington is the original plan of Pierre L'Enfant, the man who laid out the city, better preserved than on Capitol Hill.
Sites covered include Lincoln Park, Stanton Park, and the highly commercial areas of Pennsylvania Avenue, Barracks Row, and the Eastern Market. Also included in this portrait of this historic neighborhood are significant buildings and sites such as the Congressional Cemetery, and the Marine Corps Commandant's House--the oldest public residence in the Washington after the White House. The Sewall-Belmont House, which stood at the center of American politics for two hundred years, is also included. Rounding out the collection are a number of historic private homes, updated to twenty-first century living.

A Great Education at a Bargain Price.......2007-07-11
To be perfectly honest, all I expected to get from this book was a few minutes of amusement as I flipped through the 150 pages & looked at the dozens of color pictures of the interiors & exteriors of beautiful houses.
The big surprise, at least for me, began when I started reading the blocks of copy & the captions under the pictures. All of a sudden, I was getting an education on 19th century architecture & interior decoration.
When I came to page 47, for example, the heading read "Philadelphia Row." I might have heard of this section of Capitol Hill before, but I certainly didn't know anything about it: until I read the copy.
Not only was I treated to a charmingly romantic legend about how the row of houses came to be built, but then I learned--in just a few sentences--what makes this particular group of houses distinctive.
The Majesty of Capitol Hill truly is one of the best book bargains out there.
Rare Book on Contemporary Hill.......2007-06-05
It is a beautiful book and good value for money. The focus is, as the title suggests, on the most beautiful and the most opulent homes. The authors unveil the interiors of those and some of their history. A lot to learn! I did not know, for example that Charles Lindbergh lived on the Hill.
But like the first reviewer, I would like to see more of the Hill's diversity in the books -- the most beautiful gardens, the back yards, the hidden swimming pools and roof top decks. I would also like to see some of the smaller and funkier homes.
Hopefully, the authors are working on a sequel titled: "The Diversity of Capitol Hill."
Pretty Good.......2006-12-30
Does a nice job of showing the front and interior of various Capitol Hill buildings, mostly residences. The majority of the pictures are the standard frontal shot along with a handful of interior views of each building. Would have been an improvement to show some more of the exterior scenes such as the back of the buildings, the view of the streets, etc. This book is pretty good overall especially if you're looking for an overview and/or want to see what some of the homes look like on the inside.
I didn't like it.......2006-11-19
The pictures are small and stingy looking and since this is a picture book that's a huge flaw. Plus, the most of the homes shown were remarkably ugly.
Book Description
Masterfully executed designs in reproductions of two rare catalogs: ornamental borders, corners and frames with intricate floral and foliated patterns, architectural ornaments and design elements, religious symbols and figures, animals, mosaics, landscapes, much more. Invaluable to artists and craftspeople working with textiles, wallpaper and other decorative items.

lovei it.......2007-05-12
I know that people have been complaining about how some of the stencils are too small and become unclear when blown up. They have a few other issues, too.
Here's the thing: the book has over 2,000 great stencils that are perfectly legible. I'm an illustrator, woodworker, and paper crafter. I am simply delighted at the various choices of stencil. Plus, the book is very inspiring in terms of providing a jumping off point to make up my own. I simply love it.
excellent.......2007-03-10
This is a wonderful resource for design ideas! I use elements of these stencils as patterns for guitar inlays. The copyright info on the inside cover is generous allowing use of the patterns, "free and without special permission." in certain circumstances.
Historical and not useful.......2006-07-03
If you are a craftperson, do not buy this book, though pictoral, it is more historical and you need a magnifying glass to see some of the stencils.
Great Resource for Designers .......2006-06-03
This book is chock full of great Victorian design. It has cartouches (ornamental borders), patterns, single filligree elements, and the best part is that they are all royalty free. You will need to scan the elements and clean them up a bit, but this book is a fantastic resource for the "flourish" trend that is going on in graphic design right now.
Highly recommended.
Useful for engraving.......2005-05-07
I use these stencils as layouts for gun engraving. While many designs are too small and lack enough detail to be able to reproduce (about 30%) most are of good quality and detail. It's a great value for the price and I strongly recommend it as an indispensible aid for all engravers, wood carvers, and stencil makers.

A Highly Practical and Usable Intro to Silkscreening Techniques.......2007-07-03
I bought this book in 1971 and used it to create a silkscreen illustration for my university thesis. I got very satisfactory and professional looking results on my first try. For anyone, experienced artist or not, who wants to start silkscreening or just try it once, this book plus a trip to the art supply store is all you need. The book starts out with an overview of silkscreening history, basic principles, and basic equiment. It then presents five different methods with liberal photos of examples for each method: paper stencil, block-out stencil, Tusche stencil, film stencil, and photographic stencil. You chose the method most appropriate for the end result you want to achieve. There are step-by-step procedures given for each method, liberally illustrated with sketches. The book concludes with chapters on the ins and outs of multicolor printing, color properties of pigments in oils and tempera, and tricks and techiques of printing. All in all a tremendous amount of practical how-to information in a relatively small volume... very complete and efficient. I highly recommend this book. The only thing missing -- due to its age (1958) -- is computer-assisted techniques; however that is for a different book. This book is not for keyboarders in their home offices. It is for artists and hobbyists who want to see, touch, and smell real hardware, tools, inks, paints... preferably in a messy and paint spattered studio or workshop.
Ancient History.......2002-09-19
This book has a beautiful cover. With that said, this book is a history of screen printing. Written in 1958, it doesn't even come close to being up to date. No new revisions. Not worth your time unless your a screen printing historian.
Book Description
To make a big impression, says stencilling expert Sandra Buckingham, you don't have to re-create the Sistine Chapel. Start small, she counsels, and the rest will follow.
Buckingham's latest book
Stencilling on a Grand Scale leads do-it-yourselfers beyond the realm of decorative borders featured in her best-selling "Stencilling: A Harrowsmith Guide" to a creative canvas whose limits are determined only by space, time and imagination. The key to her strategy is that a large stencilled work -- be it a door, wall, screen or floor -- can be the seamless sum of its parts. In other words, rather than using an expensive, unwieldy, multi-layered stencil to create a life-sized tree, use three 10 inch stencils of leaf clusters, laying and re-laying them to achieve the desired effect. The only limit to the ultimate size of the finished painting is the room you've set aside for it.
Whether you are fashioning a greeting card or a 40-foot mural, Buckingham recommends the same modest techniques. The methods used to faux-finish a wall -- a vine rambling up a corner, windows stencilled onto an actual door, a false shelf with flowerpots stencilled in an alcove -- can likewise be applied to furniture or folding screens and can be used on any scale.
A technical review of traditional and new stencilling tools is followed by a refresher course in basic stencilling methods, including stencil cutting, hard-surface stencilling, stencilling on primed canvas, overlays, registration and special effects, among them shading, shadows, plant detail and painting skies and landscapes. A chapter on freeform stencilling, with and without masks, prepares readers for the larger-scale works that are the book's central objective.
Buckingham advises perfecting your free-form skills on less ambitious projects (lampshades, borders, placemats) before moving to grander subjects. By the later chapters, stencillers will be comfortable tackling everything from picket and wrought iron fences, lattice work, garden gates, French doors, veranda doors and curtains to paving stones, terra-cotta tiles, carpets, mosaic floors, stone columns, balustrades, terraces, garden walls and room dividers. As always, Buckingham's genius lies in inspiration, and
Stencilling on a Grand Scale introduces a how-to-world that has no boundaries.

Good Technique and Steps IF you like Folk Art type decor.......2005-12-02
The projects in this book were well-detailed and gave some good information on composition and layering of stencils. I checked this book out of the library and don't intend on buying it BUT I do recommend it if you like the more folkart type decor. I was looking for something more realistic in floral decor. The trellice project was very cute and would look great with a cottage country look.
The Best For Beginners.......2002-09-20
I came across this book in my local library and loved it so much I bought a copy for myself. Ms. Buckingham manages to create beautiful trompe l'oeil work with simple techniques that are easy for even the absolute beginner. An added bonus is that her stencils are available online...
Great for beginners and Experts.......2001-10-28
I purchased this book 2 years ago. At the time I did not know they sold stencils until I purchased a few stencils on their website along with their video. The book is easy to follow and they give you many ways to incooporate simple stencils. This book encouraged me to create a mural from a small picture and brought out a talent that I never knew existed. Well done. Fantastic pictures with great color which I feel either makes or breaks a simple stencil or a 5 layered stencil. I would highly recommend their book, stencils and their video. If I can learn, anyone can!!!! A+++++
Hard Cover Quality In a Paperback.......2000-09-22
Grab this book without hesitation!
I saw the author on the show, "Home Matters" and was instantly motivated to buy this book. When I saw that it was available in both hard- and soft- cover verrsions, my decision was difficult. Usually saving a few bucks on the paperback version of any book means sacrificing quality; thin paper, fewer illustrations, shortened versions. etc.
When I opted to buy this in the paperback form, I was expecting the usual compromises. I was, joyfully, wrong! This book not only boasts the easy instructions and wonderful pictorials of the hardcover version, it also has wonderful, high quality paper stock rarely found even in hardcover these days. The quality of this book will stand up to years of planning and crafting!
Book Description
In the Arts & Crafts tradition, decorative stencilling-on walls, pillows, draperies, or furniture-is made accessible and fresh with these classic stencil patterns from the Arts & Crafts period. Using time-tested techniques, decorative stencil painting can be applied to every room in the house. With plant and flower patterns for the kitchen, formal ornaments for the living room, animals and bugs for the family room, children and ducks for the nursery, and sea life for the bathroom, they can also be mixed and matched to suit a particular taste and decor. This treasure trove of Arts & Crafts stencil patterns is based on articles originally published in The Journal of Decorative Art. When W. G. Sutherland first published this book back in 1910, it was intended for the professional decorator. But today's do-it-yourselfer has skills that far surpass the imagination of Mr. Sutherland in the early twentieth century. Turn-of-the-century methods are described thoroughly and give an excellent background in the art of stencilling for ornamental detail. In addition to discussing supplies and preparations, Sutherland shares trade secrets for managing corners, applying continuous borders and friezes, and working up ceiling treatments and "all over" patterns-all the while working efficiently and quickly. Arts & Crafts Stencilling is the perfect companion for a bungalow update or for a contemporary Arts & Crafts-style home. W. G. Sutherland was a British sign maker and decorative artist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. He was a frequent contributor to The Journal of Decorative Art, published in Great Britain.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring ideas, and good for brainstorming.......2005-08-29
As the information on the book flap says, this book was first published in 1910 for the professional decorator. "Today, Sutherland's time-proven methods give do-it-yourselfers a thorough education and an excellent background in the art of stencilling for ornamental detail."
All that is accurate, I think. The book does a great job of explaining how to think about stencilling a room or window, and the author also has a good sense of humor. There are lots and LOTS of symbols and figures, though many of them are fairly small so you'll have to blow them up with a photocopier.
How helpful is it? While I appreciate the overview, and it helped me understand the process, our tools have (thankfully) improved since 1910! I'm probably going to read another book on basic stenciling before I start decorating my living room -- but I probably will be satisfied with a library book. (There are some black-and-white line drawings in Sutherland's book, but no how-to color photos.) I think this one will be the one I'll turn to, over time, for actually _doing_ the work rather than learning the basic skills.
The author was clearly involved in the Arts & Crafts movement, so this is as authentic as you can get. The patterns and motifs are absolutely lovely (assuming you like Arts & Crafts, bungalow, and Mission style as much as I do), and there are plenty of "Oh cool, I hadn't thought of that!" suggestions, such as for ceiling treatments, that make me glad I bought this book.

If you want to learn the principles of stencilling...........2004-01-04
This is a wonderful book for you. Sandra Buckingham explain in a very didactic way all steps to do your stencils, not only painting them, as well as achiving a beautiful result. You will learn a little bit of stencil history, bronze powdering, painting with acrylic, oils and how to cut them in a very simple way. She also shows how stencils are versatile painting over paper, fabrics and walls. You will learn really great ideas with this book. I had the pleasure to meet and take classes with Mrs. Buckingham at SALI Conventions in USA and recommend all her other books, even if you are an expert stenciller. Her approach in this technique is very singular and this was the first book that really helped me in learning what became to me a career as a decorative painter.
