Professor Tonomura’s book explains at the molecular level how cells use energy harnessed. as.adenosine triphosphate to perform the fundamental physiological functions such as muscle contraction and the active transport of cations. In all cases, ATPase enzymes are involved and the detailed reaction mechanisms are carefully described. Young collaborators helped Professor Tonomura to put together the first draft of the book, for he was particularly anxious that the text should be accessible to students who were less familiar with the intricacies of the field than he himself, and should reflect their needs. After his sudden, untimely death, Professor Ebashi and his colleagues at the National Institute of Physiological Sciences, Okazaki, updated and completed the text. The result is a well written, interesting account of the field and this volume forms a worthy memorial to one of the foremost workers in this area of biochemical research.

This is a well written and well organized book offering a great deal of information on this complicated three phase system. The authors explain the partitioning of the contaminant flow into nonaqueous, dissolved, gaseous and sorbed phases. The authors have also made an effort to discuss problems and limitations related to vadose zone monitoring which I have found useful when developing workplans and understanding and interpreting data.

Soils are unique materials. Analogous to all other particulate materials, their properties depend on environmental parameters, such as confinement and fluid characteristics. While their behavior is complex, simple micromechanical analyses at the particle level provide unparalleled insight. Furthermore, elastic and electromagnetic waves can be effectively used to gain complementary information about the particulate medium, leading to unique possibilities for studies in engineering and science, including field applications for site assessment and process monitoring.
This book is divided into five parts. The first part dwells on the problem of scale and includes a general introduction to materials. In the second part, the behavior of particulate materials is reviewed, with emphasis on the microscale interpretation of macroscale behavior. Fundamental differences between fine and coarse particulate materials are highlighted. The third and fourth parts center on the propagation of mechanical and electromagnetic waves in particulate materials, addressing phenomena such as stiffness, polarization and losses. These two units include laboratory techniques to measure the elastic and electromagnetic spectral response of particulate materials, and an extensive compilation of experimental data. Finally, the fifth part applies elastic and electromagnetic waves to monitoring process in soils.
Emphasis is placed on clear, simple analyses and explanations of complex physical phenomena, making this book ideal for self-study. Furthermore, no other book provides such an in-depth description of soils and their behavior and the interaction of elastic and electromagnetic waves and particulate materials (including material data and experimental methods). Thus, this is an invaluable reference for postgraduates, research scientists and practitioners in geotechnical, civil and environmental engineering, as well as scientists in related areas such as physics, geophysics and materials science.

Excellent book.......2001-06-26
This book has two main sections. One on soil behavior, the other on wave propagation through soils. The section on soil behavior is excellent. The clarity is crisp. It provides a true scientific description of soil behavior, highlighting the microscale: an approach to the study of soils that is hard to find (as complete) in other books. I truly recommend this book. It provides answers to so many questions, and with such conciseness and clarity!

Description:
Hazardous potential in industrial environments is normally assessed by means of immission-based sampling and analyses. This approach is not adequate, if effects of specific technical adjustments at machine tools or working processes on hygienic parameters should be assessed. This work has focused on the optimization of a manufacturing process (electrical discharge machining, EDM), with regard to risk reduction assessment. It is based on emission analyses rather than immision analyses. Several technical EDM parameters have been examined for their influence on air-based emissions. Worktools and workpieces used have a strong influence on aliphatic compounds and metals but not on volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylene-benzene and xylene (BTEX)) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air emissions. Increasing the dielectric (mineral oil) level above processing location decreases BTEX, chromium, nickel and PAH emissions. Aliphatic compounds, in contrast, increase in air emissions. EDM current used has a positive relationship with all substances analyzed in air emissions. Indicative immission concentrations, as can be expected under EDM conditions, are estimated in a predictive scenario. The results of this characterization give rise to an important conclusion in that risk assessment so far has been using incorrect parameters: total aliphatic compounds. Maximum level of chromium is reached long before limit values of aliphatic compounds are exceeded. Because of the fact that metals, like chromium, also have a higher hazardous potential, metal analysis should be introduced in future risk assessment. This experimental approach, that captures total emission of the electrical discharge machine, and is not solely based on immission values, has lead to a better understanding of the production process. This information is used to extract recommendations regarding monitoring aspects and protection measures.
