Introduction to Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy
ASIN: 1402043023 |
Book Description
When considering the biological significance and industrial and medical applications of biopolymers, it is crucial to know details of their secondary structure, dynamics and assembly. The biopolymers include globular, membrane and fibrous proteins, polypeptides, nucleic acids, polysaccharides and lipids. Solid state NMR spectroscopy has proved to be the most suitable and unrivaled means for investigations of biopolymers. The major advantage of solid state NMR spectroscopy is that the resulting line widths can be manipulated experimentally and are not influenced by motional fluctuation of proteins under consideration as a whole.
Solid State NMR Spectroscopy for Biopolymers: Principles and Applications provides a comprehensive account on how the conformation and dynamics of such biopolymers can be revealed by solid state NMR spectroscopy. Special efforts have been made towards the historical and chronological consequences of a variety of applications and the dynamic aspects of the biopolymer system. In particular, the authors emphasise how important it is to record the most simple DD-MAS (one pulse excitation with high power decoupling) as a mean of locating very flexible portions of membrane proteins and membrane associated peptides. The authors also demonstrate that dynamic features of membrane proteins with a timescale of fast (10
8 Hz) and intermediate (10
4 -10
5 Hz) fluctuation motions can be revealed easily by specific suppression of peaks.

Book Description
Protein structure and design is an area of burgeoning interest. This stems from our being able to create novel proteins at will using the methods of protein engineering and the potential of such proteins in a host of applications ranging from pharmaceuticals to environmentally friendly insecticides. At the same time enormous advances in techniques such as X-ray crystallography, NMR and computer-based modeling are enabling us to define protein structure and properties an undertake redesign with increased assurance. The focus of this volume is on the use of biophysical techniques and computer modeling to characterize protein structure, dynamics and function. Up-to-the-minute accounts of protein NMR, protein dynamics, and computational methods in protein design appear alongside the application of optical specotroscopies to unravel the complexities of structure, function and dynamics. Major topics highlighted include: + Recent developments in 2D and 3D NMR spectroscopy + Assignment of proton resonances for large proteins + Isotopic labeling + Molecular dynamics of peptides from NMR studies + Combined experimental and theoretical approaches to protein dynamics + Pico to femtosecond time spans in optical spectroscopy for protein structure studies. This volume is based on the symposium `Expanding Frontiers in Polypeptide and Protein Structural Research' held in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada in July 1990. It was widely felt that the invited presentations by about 60 of the leading experts in NMR, protein dynamics, spectroscopy and modeling defined the state of the art. Their written contributions appear in this volume.

Book Description
The primary goal of this book is to explore the physical properties of polymers in confined spaces at the nanometer scale, with a particular emphasis on determining the mechanisms by which polymers are transported through narrow interstices. A variety of pore structures that polymers can penetrate have recently been discovered, and it is now possible to probe the dynamics of the interactions between polymers and the penetrating molecules.
The experimental and theoretical advances discussed include:
- Mechanical properties of single molecules;
- Detection & characterization of single polymers transported through narrow ion channels;
- Direct measurement of the energetics and dynamics of polymer transport through a pore;
- Statistical mechanical theories for single polymer transport through a narrow pore;
- Novel polymer separations techniques not based on cross-linked gels;
- Physics of polymer-protein interactions.£/LIST£ The book also explores potential scientific and technological applications that can exploit these systems, with the aim of stimulating new research in this highly multidisciplinary field.

From the author: The effect of temperature on the unexpected shear-thickening behavior exhibited by semidilute solutions of waxy maize starch during a repeated shear-loop experiment was evaluated. Shear-thickening behavior, characterized using power law models, was observed for waxy maize starch, but not for normal maize starch at the same concentration. The shear-thickening region was observed for waxy maize starch at temperatures ranging from 25 [degrees] C to 80 [degrees] C and shear rates from 2-100 [s.sup.-1] during the initial part of the shear-loop experiment. For waxy maize starch, the power law exponent, n, was found to be 0.539 [+ or -] 0.017 in the shear-thinning region. For normal maize starch, the value of n was found to be equal to 0.751 [+ or -] 0.015 and only shear-thinning behavior was observed. The values of n for both waxy maize and normal maize starch were found to be temperature independent within the precision of the experimental measurements. The differences in n indicate the differences in the conformational dynamics of waxy maize and normal maize starches in solution.

Book Description
Modeling hydrologic changes and predicting their impact on watersheds is a dominant concern for hydrologists and other water resource professionals, civil and environmental engineers, and urban and regional planners. As such changes continue, it becomes more essential to have the most up-to-date tools with which to perform the proper analyses and modeling of the complex ecology, morphology, and physical processes that occur within watersheds. An application-oriented text, Modeling Hydrologic Change: Statistical Methods provides a step-by-step presentation of modeling procedures to help you properly analyze and model real-world data. The text addresses modeling systems where change has affected data that will be used to calibrate and test models of the system. The use of actual hydrologic data will help you learn how to handle the vagaries of real-world hydrologic-change data. All four elements of the modeling process are discussed: conceptualization, formulation, calibration, and verification. Although the book is oriented towards the statistical aspects of modeling, a strong background in statistics is not required. The statistical and modeling methods discussed here will be of value to all disciplines involved in modeling change. With approximately 100 illustrations, Modeling Hydrologic Change will equip you with an understanding with which to perform the proper analyses and modeling of the complex processes that occur across various disciplines.

Product Description
The book presents the statistical knowledge and methodology of sampling and data analysis useful for spatial inventory and monitoring of natural resources. The authors omitted all theory not essential for applications or for basic understanding. This presentation is broader than standard statistical texts, as the authors pay much attention to how statistical methodology can be employed and embedded in real-life spatial inventory and monitoring projects. Thus they discuss in detail how efficient sampling schemes and monitoring systems can be designed in view of the aims and constraints of the project.

Book Description
The book covers entropy-based techniques for parameter estimation in hydrology. The techniques are presented for twenty distributions used in hydrology, including the distributions of the normal family, the extreme-value family, the Pareto family, and the logistic family. A comparative assessment of the entropy-based techniques is made with traditional methods of parameter estimation, such as the methods of moments, maximum likelihood estimation, probability-weighted moments, L-moments, and least squares, using field data as well as Monte Carlo simulation experiments.
The book is the first attempt to comprehensively present the entropy-based techniques for most distributions of interest in hydrology.
Audience: The material covered in the book will be of interest to graduate students, researchers, and teachers, as well as practitioners of agricultural engineering, civil engineering, agricultural sciences, earth sciences, environmental sciences, and forest and range sciences.
