Book Description

Atlantic Coast beaches offer a variety of souvenirs and curiosities to those beachgoers that care to look. Shells have long been treasured finds, and their descriptions are well documented in a variety of books and guides. But what about the other things found on the beach? These are the things that drift in the ocean and are carried in with the winds: sea-beans, spirula, mermaid's purses, and other tropical treasures. This book references them in a convenient form for the beachcomber, while keeping the oceanographer and botanist in mind. Interesting descriptions of each sea-bean species, or other drift treasure, and 175 color photographs make this book a valuable collector's guide. Perry and Dennis provide the results of a 30-year study on sea-bean flotation tests. No other book combines personal experience, use of color photography identifications, and the scientific field of botany into a complete, friendly user's guide for identifying sea-beans and other drift from the sea.

Book Description

Take a close look at a wave-battered coast and you will discover a rich, fascinating, and remarkably brutal environment. Here, animals and plants exposed to wind, sun, and rain at low tide must cope with crashing waves as the seas rise to submerge them each day at high tide. How do living things survive in this harsh zone? With 87 stunning color photographs and an engaging text written for those with little or no knowledge of marine biology or physics, this book tells the story of one stretch along the Pacific coast of North America--introducing the mussels, limpets, crabs, grasses, starfish, kelp, and other animals and plants that live there, and explaining how they function and flourish in an environment of waves, sand, and rocks.
In pictures and words, Wave-Swept Shore explains complex phenomena, such as wave action, using simple, intuitive analogies. It explores how the forms of animals and plants affect their survival in this harsh environment, considers their distribution on the shore, and looks at their seasonal variations, focusing on what can be easily observed by visitors to the coast. Revealing the rich variety of habitats woven into what may at first look like a fairly uniform environment, the book, an effective and beautiful tool for learning about the edge of oceans everywhere, opens our eyes to the wonders of rocky shores and introduces a whole new way of looking at the natural world.

This book eminates respect for the natural ecosystems of our shorelines. Visually it left me in awe. I frequently walk the Oregon coastlines and the detailed images are causing me to take a closer look... I am equally eager to explore the text at deeper levels. We are purchasing a copy for evening reading at our beach house and anticipate that it will become a fabulous gift for all those on our list who share our passion for the sea...highly recommended *****

      Book Description

The South Pacific has long been in need of a comprehensive guide to reef and shore fishes. This volume covers the inshore fish fauna of New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, the southern Gilbert Islands (Kiribati), Tuvalu, Fiji, the Wallis Islands, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa, the Tokelau Islands, the Phoenix Islands, the Cook Islands, the Austral Islands, Rapa, the Society Islands, the Tuamoto Archipelago, the Marquesas Islands, and the Pitcairn Islands. It contains accounts of nearly 1,500 species of fishes, illustrated with more than 2,000 color photographs, taken mostly underwater. (A few drab species are illustrated by only black and white photographs or drawings.)

Species accounts are headed by the English common name, the scientific name, the author or authors who described the fish, and the date of the description. This is followed by a concise list of the characteristics needed to identify the species, the total length it attains, its distribution, habitat, and in summary form what may be known of its biology. More than 600 references are given for those seeking more information on individual species. The introduction contains a two-page color spread of the main external features of fishes. An extensive glossary of scientific terms precedes the index.

This volume will become the benchmark and bible for anyone interested in the fishes of the South Pacific. Snorkelers and scuba divers will find it especially useful; virtually every known species of fish they might encounter can be found within its covers.

      3 out of 5 stars eh!.......2004-06-30

      this book is just eh!
i was expecting this wonderful survey of nj, having read from journal articles by joanna burger.
The book is a drag to read, although informative and containing subject matter not tackled by anyone else.
having had dr. burger as a professor at rutgers, i would say read the book, don't take the class.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Great Book!.......2003-03-15

If you are interested in nature and/or live along the Jersey Shore this book is wonderful to read. I've been to most of the places she describes and never saw all that was there. Joanna Burger brings to life the nature around us even in a crowded place like NJ.

5 out of 5 stars She followed a dream across the water.........1999-08-24

Without a doubt the most fascinating book I have ever read on what happens out on those little sand islands in Jersey's bays. Why? Because Joanna Burger took a few supplies out in a little boat & lived on one. She followed the dream of so many young human "shorebirds" who longed to escape the crowded beaches & waterfront developments to see where the birds lived. This isn't polite ecology with fine line drawings & quotations from Thoreau, but hot piles of sands baking in the sun & wretched North Atlantic winter weather.

By going to the heart of our shore's natural beauty, Burger also finds the ongoing threats. True, the waterfowl population has increased over the past 40 years, several species at the expense of others. But road runoff is killing the bays & so-called "personal watercraft" (jet skis) are wrecking intertidal wetlands, creating incredible noise pollution & bringing hundreds of knuckleheads into first contact with the wildlife that has found relative safety from human interference in our back bays, estuaries & marshes.

I can't emphasize strongly enough the importance of Burger's writings. They should be taught in our schools & be required reading for everyone who ventures out on to the wonderlands that exist behind our stressed out barrier islands.

A beautiful & unique book. The birds love her & so do I. Give this scientist a laurel wreath, if you can find her.

                Book Description

This photographic guide to sea shore animals and plants represents a completely new approach to field guides. It is aimed at those who wish to find and identify organisms encountered on the sea shore or immediately offshore quickly and easily while promoting their conservation. Uniquely, each species is illustrated by a photograph and, in most cases, accompanied by a line drawing that emphasises the critical features for identification and a map to show the distribution of the species in North-West Europe. The text itself deliberately focuses on features that complement the photographs and facilitate identification non-destructively - where, for example, burrowing worms can only be identified by digging them up and therefore killing them, only the cast, the part usually seen, is shown. Stress is laid on the importance of exploiting all available information for locating and identifying each species - if two species have identical appearance they are described separately and behavioural, geographical, or seasonal features that distinguish them are described in the text. There is no other guide to sea shore organisms like this one; those available are either less comprehensive or less well illustrated. It will appeal to beachcombers of all levels, from families to students and professionals, as well to divers and those visiting the proliferating numbers of commercially run marine aquaria that are open to the public.

This book is based on key papers given at the Kongsberg seminar in 1995. It covers the subject of fluid flow in rocks and the importance of this mechanism in geochemical transport and in the origin of metamorphic and igneous rocks. Fluid flow in rocks is currently an extremely important topic in geology, involving a large international and interdisciplinary research effort.

                      Book Description

Fluid flow, as it applies to geologic media, is the topic of this volume. The range of interest is large; it encompasses the weathering of geologic formations by the action of water, the manner in which certain minerals come to occur in commercial quantities, the fate of chemical contaminants once they enter an aquifer, optimal methods to remove (or at least contain) these contaminants, and ways to improve the recovery of hydrocarbons from reservoirs.
While it is impossible to treat all of the applications of geochemical flow in a single volume, it is possible to treat certain features of simplified reactive flow that occur in nearly all applications. Understanding these features will help interpret much more complex flows and providing the basis for this understanding is the goal of this text.

This book is a culmination of a research project conducted at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) over the past 20 years. It has also been used as a text in a graduate course at UT on geochemistry and flow, taught by each of the editors over a period of 10 years. The reader will undoubtedly benefit from the knowledge flow that this progression from research project, via classroom, to text represents.

                        Book Description

Hydrothermal mineralization is usually structurally controlled so it is important to understand the role of faulting and fracturing in enhancing rock permeability and facilitating fluid flow and mass transfer. This is the main theme of this interdisciplinary volume and the papers included are intended to provide an overview of current ideas at the interfaces of structural geology, fluid flow and mineralization research. The volume includes some speculative but provocative ideas which should stimulate a re-examination of existing concepts regarding fluid flow in fracture systems and the genesis of hydrothermal mineral deposits. It also highlights recent advances which show the importance of the development of fracture connectivity in focusing fluid flow. The volume concludes with a thematic set of papers presenting new research results on the genesis of the world famous Carboniferous base metal deposits of Ireland. This volume is intended for geoscientists studying the flow of fluids through fault, vein and fracture systems or the genesis of mineral deposits and will be of interest principally to those involved in the minerals industry and in academia.

                          Book Description

This book is a mosaic of important building blocks bringing together the evolution of petroleum and the dynamic geological framework of sedimentary basins. Both basin modeling and organic geochemistry serve important roles in this context. Geochemical data and interpretation results, such as on source rock maturity and petroleum generation and expulsion, can now be extended in their application from only single boreholes to entire regions by means of basin modeling. Earth scientists in general will be attracted by the philosophy and approach presented in this book. It paves the way for combining the insight and views into the subsurface from modern seismic's advanced interpretation and visualization, with the understanding and results from an interactive basin modeling capability.
