Sea-Beans from the Tropics: A Collector's Guide to Sea-Beans and Other Tropical Drift on Atlantic Shores
Manufacturer: Krieger Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1575241811 |
Book Description
Atlantic Coast beaches offer a variety of souvenirs and curiosities to those beachgoers that care to look. Shells have long been treasured finds, and their descriptions are well documented in a variety of books and guides. But what about the other things found on the beach? These are the things that drift in the ocean and are carried in with the winds: sea-beans, spirula, mermaid's purses, and other tropical treasures. This book references them in a convenient form for the beachcomber, while keeping the oceanographer and botanist in mind. Interesting descriptions of each sea-bean species, or other drift treasure, and 175 color photographs make this book a valuable collector's guide. Perry and Dennis provide the results of a 30-year study on sea-bean flotation tests. No other book combines personal experience, use of color photography identifications, and the scientific field of botany into a complete, friendly user's guide for identifying sea-beans and other drift from the sea.Customer Reviews:

ASIN: 0520238125 |
Book Description
Take a close look at a wave-battered coast and you will discover a rich, fascinating, and remarkably brutal environment. Here, animals and plants exposed to wind, sun, and rain at low tide must cope with crashing waves as the seas rise to submerge them each day at high tide. How do living things survive in this harsh zone? With 87 stunning color photographs and an engaging text written for those with little or no knowledge of marine biology or physics, this book tells the story of one stretch along the Pacific coast of North America--introducing the mussels, limpets, crabs, grasses, starfish, kelp, and other animals and plants that live there, and explaining how they function and flourish in an environment of waves, sand, and rocks.Customer Reviews:

Reef and Shore Fishes of the South Pacific: New Caledonia to Tahiti and the Pitcairn Islands
John E. Randall Manufacturer: University of Hawaii Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0824826981 |
Book Description
The South Pacific has long been in need of a comprehensive guide to reef and shore fishes. This volume covers the inshore fish fauna of New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, the southern Gilbert Islands (Kiribati), Tuvalu, Fiji, the Wallis Islands, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa, the Tokelau Islands, the Phoenix Islands, the Cook Islands, the Austral Islands, Rapa, the Society Islands, the Tuamoto Archipelago, the Marquesas Islands, and the Pitcairn Islands. It contains accounts of nearly 1,500 species of fishes, illustrated with more than 2,000 color photographs, taken mostly underwater. (A few drab species are illustrated by only black and white photographs or drawings.)Species accounts are headed by the English common name, the scientific name, the author or authors who described the fish, and the date of the description. This is followed by a concise list of the characteristics needed to identify the species, the total length it attains, its distribution, habitat, and in summary form what may be known of its biology. More than 600 references are given for those seeking more information on individual species. The introduction contains a two-page color spread of the main external features of fishes. An extensive glossary of scientific terms precedes the index.
This volume will become the benchmark and bible for anyone interested in the fishes of the South Pacific. Snorkelers and scuba divers will find it especially useful; virtually every known species of fish they might encounter can be found within its covers.

Photographic Guide to Sea and Shore Life of Britain and North-west Europe (Oxford Natural History)
Ray Gibson , Ben Hextall , and Alex Rogers Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0198507097 |
Book Description
This photographic guide to sea shore animals and plants represents a completely new approach to field guides. It is aimed at those who wish to find and identify organisms encountered on the sea shore or immediately offshore quickly and easily while promoting their conservation. Uniquely, each species is illustrated by a photograph and, in most cases, accompanied by a line drawing that emphasises the critical features for identification and a map to show the distribution of the species in North-West Europe. The text itself deliberately focuses on features that complement the photographs and facilitate identification non-destructively - where, for example, burrowing worms can only be identified by digging them up and therefore killing them, only the cast, the part usually seen, is shown. Stress is laid on the importance of exploiting all available information for locating and identifying each species - if two species have identical appearance they are described separately and behavioural, geographical, or seasonal features that distinguish them are described in the text. There is no other guide to sea shore organisms like this one; those available are either less comprehensive or less well illustrated. It will appeal to beachcombers of all levels, from families to students and professionals, as well to divers and those visiting the proliferating numbers of commercially run marine aquaria that are open to the public.

Book Description
This book is based on key papers given at the Kongsberg seminar in 1995. It covers the subject of fluid flow in rocks and the importance of this mechanism in geochemical transport and in the origin of metamorphic and igneous rocks. Fluid flow in rocks is currently an extremely important topic in geology, involving a large international and interdisciplinary research effort.

Geochemistry and Fluid Flow (Developments in Geochemistry)
Manufacturer: Elsevier Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0444515011 |
Book Description
Fluid flow, as it applies to geologic media, is the topic of this volume. The range of interest is large; it encompasses the weathering of geologic formations by the action of water, the manner in which certain minerals come to occur in commercial quantities, the fate of chemical contaminants once they enter an aquifer, optimal methods to remove (or at least contain) these contaminants, and ways to improve the recovery of hydrocarbons from reservoirs.
This book is a culmination of a research project conducted at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) over the past 20 years. It has also been used as a text in a graduate course at UT on geochemistry and flow, taught by each of the editors over a period of 10 years. The reader will undoubtedly benefit from the knowledge flow that this progression from research project, via classroom, to text represents.

Fractures, Fluid Flow and Mineralization (Geological Society Special Publication)
Manufacturer: Geological Society of London ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1862390347 |
Book Description
Hydrothermal mineralization is usually structurally controlled so it is important to understand the role of faulting and fracturing in enhancing rock permeability and facilitating fluid flow and mass transfer. This is the main theme of this interdisciplinary volume and the papers included are intended to provide an overview of current ideas at the interfaces of structural geology, fluid flow and mineralization research. The volume includes some speculative but provocative ideas which should stimulate a re-examination of existing concepts regarding fluid flow in fracture systems and the genesis of hydrothermal mineral deposits. It also highlights recent advances which show the importance of the development of fracture connectivity in focusing fluid flow. The volume concludes with a thematic set of papers presenting new research results on the genesis of the world famous Carboniferous base metal deposits of Ireland. This volume is intended for geoscientists studying the flow of fluids through fault, vein and fracture systems or the genesis of mineral deposits and will be of interest principally to those involved in the minerals industry and in academia.

Petroleum and Basin Evolution: Insights from Petroleum Geochemistry, Geology and Basin Modeling
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540611282 |
Book Description
This book is a mosaic of important building blocks bringing together the evolution of petroleum and the dynamic geological framework of sedimentary basins. Both basin modeling and organic geochemistry serve important roles in this context. Geochemical data and interpretation results, such as on source rock maturity and petroleum generation and expulsion, can now be extended in their application from only single boreholes to entire regions by means of basin modeling. Earth scientists in general will be attracted by the philosophy and approach presented in this book. It paves the way for combining the insight and views into the subsurface from modern seismic's advanced interpretation and visualization, with the understanding and results from an interactive basin modeling capability.
