      Description:
The short-term osmoregulatory capacity of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae and juveniles at consecutive developmental stages was evaluated by an analysis of drinking rates and whole-body and branchial Na^+/K^+ ATPase activity. The effect of acute salinity stress on those parameters was assessed from hatching to the juvenile stage. Drinking rate normalised to body weight (DR"b"w) decreased throughout postembryonic development. DR"b"w was not affected by salinity in yolk sac larvae. However, significant differences were observed in older larvae and in juveniles submitted to hypo- and hyperosmotic challenges. Post yolk sac larvae and juveniles always drink, but at a lower rate in hypoosmotic media compared to hyperosmotic media. A correlation was established between DR"b"w and blood osmolality during the postembryonic development of the sea bass. Na^+/K^+ ATPase specific and total activity in whole larval homogenates decreased from hatching to the 5-mm yolk sac larva stage and increased in 10-mm stage larvae. The enzyme specific activity in the gills, from post yolk sac larvae to juveniles, decreased whereas the total activity increased during the same period. Developing sea bass have a better capacity to cope with hypoosmotic than hyperosmotic media.

        Description:
The nutritional condition and protein growth rates of Japanese temperate bass larvae and juveniles were studied in relation to prey distribution and feeding habits in the nursery grounds in Chikugo estuary, Ariake Sea, Japan. Samples were collected from a wide spatial area covering the nursery grounds of the fish in March and April 2003. Food habits of the fish were analyzed by examining the gut contents. Fish condition was evaluated by using RNA/DNA ratio and other nucleic acid-based indices and protein growth rates. The nucleic acid contents in individually frozen larvae and juveniles were quantified by fluorometric method. Two distinguished feeding patterns, determined by the distribution of prey copepods, were identified along the nursery ground. The first pattern showed the dependency of the fish on the calanoid copepod Sinocalanus sinensis, which was the single dominant prey in low saline upper river areas and the second pattern involved a multi-species dietary habit mainly dominated by Acartia omorii, Oithona davisae and Paracalanus parvus. Values of RNA, DNA, total protein, growth rates and for all the nucleic acid-based indices were higher in upstream areas than in the downstream areas. The proportion of the starving fish was higher in the downstream areas than in the upstream areas. Condition of juvenile sea bass was not equal throughout the nursery grounds; fish in the upper river were in better condition than those in the lower estuary. We speculated that utilization of S. sinensis, which appears a suitable prey item and provide a better foraging environment in the upstream nursery ground, is one of the key factors for early survival and growth of Japanese temperate bass larvae and juveniles in the Chikugo estuary. o estuary.

                    Book Description

Crowded into the beautiful, narrow strip at the edge of the ocean, the large number of people who live near California's dynamic coastline often have little awareness of the hazards--waves, tides, wind, storms, rain, and runoff--that erode and impact the coast and claim property on a regular basis. This up-to-date, authoritative, and easy-to-use book, a geological profile of the California coast from Mexico to the Oregon border, describes the landforms and processes that shape the coastline and beaches, documents how erosion has affected development, and discusses the options that are available for dealing with coastal hazards and geologic instability.
A completely revised and updated edition of Living with the California Coast (1985), this book features hundreds of new photographs and the latest data on human activity on the coast, on climate change, on rising seas levels, and on coastal erosion and protection. With its dramatic photographs and mile-by-mile maps, Living with the Changing California Coast will be an essential resource for those intending to buy or build along the coast, those who need specific information about various coastal regions, and those who are seeking information about how this remarkable coastline has evolved.

279 photographs portray natural coastal features and processes and illustrate many instances of what can happen to buildings on the coast
81 maps, covering the entire coast, detail types of coastal landforms, coastline erosion rates, locations of seawalls or armor, and other specific areas of interest
Offers specific advice for homebuyers, residents, and developers on which areas to avoid, on what safety measures should be taken, and on what danger signals should be heeded

Living with the Changing California Coast was an interesting book to read, and I'm keeping it as a reference book. It provides explanation for some of the bad surprises that occur with coastal development.

                        Book Description

Are we humans destroying the environments in which we live, or is environmental change inevitable and natural? How has the relationship between human societies and environments changed since pre-history? Will human population growth outpace the available resources of land and water? Is global warming and climate change already out of control? What can economic and political models tell us about international development? Changing Environments takes a broad, interdisciplinary approach to such questions, drawing on ideas from science, technology, social science and humanities to examine how and why environments change as a result of natural and human-mediated processes. It draws on examples from around the world, and includes consideration of:

                        Book Description

Hampered by a confusing plethora of approaches and methods, biogeography is often treated as an adjunct to other areas of study. The first book to fully define this rapidly emerging subdiscipline, Biogeography in a Changing World elucidates the principles of biogeography and paves the way for its evolution into a stand-alone field. Drawing on contributions from leading proponents of differing methods within biogeography, the book clearly defines the differing, sometimes conflicting, perspectives in the field and their correspondingly different methodological approaches. This gives readers the opportunity to refocus on a range of issues including the role of biological processes such as vicariance, dispersal and extinction in biogeographical explanation, the possibility of biogeographical pattern, and the role of geological reconstructions in biogeographic explanation. The book also explores the discipline's current relationship with other disciplines and discusses potential developments.

5 out of 5 stars The first book on a new science.......2006-11-19

Biogeography is a new discipline being formed by people approaching the problems of plant and animal distribution by combining the skills from diverse fields. The problem with biogeography is that it is so new that there isn't even a standard definition of what it is.

In August of 2005 a symposium was held with the title 'What is Biogeography.' The symposium provided a forum for a range of viewpoints and the way it is practiced. This book brings together the papers from the meeting, plus additional material, to provide a broad-based perspective on the nature of biogeography. The wide range of authors come from all across Europe and America.

A major part of the book, but a bit understated, is the exploration of the discipline's current relationship with other disciplines and discusses portntial development. This is intended to pave the way for its evolution into a stand-alone field.

                          Book Description

This textbook for first year university studies gives a comprehensive review of geomorphology. It stresses the importance of the theory of tectonic and climatic changes on a global scale and so takes account of the two revolutions which are occurring in the Earth Sciences at the present time The book has three main parts. In the first, global tectonics is used as the framework for discussion of the Earth's major relief features, their development and structure, and the landforms resulting from tectonism. The second part is concerned with the nature of geomorphic resistance and of the processes of weathering, erosion and deposition. In the final part the significance of and evidence for, climatic change and long-term evolution of landorms are discussed, and the evidence for the impact of climate and climatic change upon the major bioclimatic zones of the continents is reviewed. The author conveys his interesting and original material in a lively and informative way. His clear and straightforward style, together with the liberal number of illustrations, should make the material accessible to all students who wish to have an understanding of landforms through an analysis of their relation to structural, tectonic and earth surface processes.

                            Book Description

Are mountains growing taller? Some are. Mount Everest, for example, is the highest mountain in the world. And it is still growing about 1 inch (2.5 cm) every year.In the well received conversational style that sets the Q & A series apart, the Bergers provide a wonderful introduction to Earth science. Children will be eager to explore the changing earth they inhabit. They will learn how rocks are made, what makes a volcano erupt, and that mountains can not only grow taller, but shorter, too!
