Book Description

GREAT book for LEGO enthusiasts.......2006-11-22
This is a GREAT book for LEGO enthusiasts, as there are TONS of great photos of interesting layouts, photos of the models, etc. This is a great resource ALSO because since these are already models, much of the geometry is already simplified, which makes building much easier. :-)
Help Has Arrived.......2000-07-09
If you have ever had a hard time visualizing the way a floor plan would look in real life this book would be benificial. It is a well rounded collection of house models done by famous architects. This book will also help anyone who is trying to design a model house of their own.

Great Step by Step Instructions.......2006-08-13
I wish I had this book when I learned to paint. Although I don't consider myself a rookie at this point I still learned volumes from this book. Format is perfect for doing each exercise in the studio. This isn't a sit on the couch and read type of book. It's a working book which has a stand to make it easy to flip to the next exercise while you're painting.
Useful, Not handy!.......2006-07-13
If you saw any of Mr. Lynch's videos, you must have this Workshop Lesson Charts because this is a support and a reminder of what you saw on his videos. I gave this 3 stars because this book (calendar like) is very very heavy! It's too dificult to carry because it's very big also!
Workshop lessons.......2004-02-07
The format of this publication is very helpful and makes the book easier to read. I took the work shop and the book closely follows the design of the workshop.
Yesterday's homerun doesn't count in today's game........2003-12-11
I have Tom's other books and think they are excellent. I find this one to be of no use at all.
A Master Teacher's Workshop Charts.......2003-09-06
I agree with Verena Blackburn's review.
Many watercolorists teach workshops. Some merely demonstrate, painting a painting or 2 or 3, and lecture a little, at times the same old clues--you are supposed to learn by example but little else. On the other hand, some work at teaching as hard as they work at painting, and Tom Lynch is among the finest of these.
These 100 charts are for the intermediate-to-advanced watercolor painter. They are brief in explanation (particularly when it comes to Watercolor jargon), so it helps to know a lot of the common watercolor terminology. However, these charts represent the heart of Lynch's comprehensive teaching--he covers nearly everything--both with beautiful illustrations and reproduced paintings of his, which one can easily see accurately illustrate and clarify the text. But they are more than this. Lynch's design/composition/color approaches as well as techniques for rendering specific subject matter are insightful and often like revelations, the product of his many years of painting and teaching. He is able to capture in a few words art wisdom in a way I have not frequently found (I have about 80-90 watercolor painting books). It's obvious that Lynch has thought through and used successfully many times the techniques he captures in the charts. And, he has a way of communicating to you what you need to know to be successful. These charts contain, in concise form, watercolor knowledge that would probably take many of us years to acquire on our own.
Years ago (15 at least), I watched a number of Lynch's teaching presentations on public television (I also bought one of his first instructional books), and those few lessons did more for my understanding of watercolor and painting success than most workshops I have attended. They gave me what you might call a "quantum leap." These charts contain more. Honestly, I would have paid 10 times their retail price to own them, by the way.
One final word, if you buy these charts, it would be good to also buy his book "Watercolor Secrets," which covers some of the same points but also provides more text and explanations than the charts do. This would especially be wise if you are closer to the beginner end of the intermediate range.

Good advice, well organized.......2007-05-03
I was very impressed with this book. The side tabs make it easy to go directly to the section you want. Advice was excellent and well presented.
Extraordinary watercolor, great teacher.......2007-01-03
A beautifully printed hard cover book by an extraordinary watercolor artist. The book is filled with outstanding examples of landscapes, cityscapes from all over the world. In addition to being an inspired World class watercolor artist, Robert Wade is also a great teacher, the book is filled with practical advise and hands on lessons on color mixing, painting people, skies, glazing, location painting and many other subjects.Just to be able to look at his outstanding paintings would easily justify buying this book.
Understanding Watercolor.......2006-11-04
Excellent handbook for the serious watercolorist. Robert Wade has a great approach to some of the more difficult aspects of painting with watercolor. He is brief, to the point, yet his explanations make sense! Enjoyable reading and a great reference tool.
I wish I discovered this earlier!.......2006-08-13
What a wonderful book with terrific instructions and insights. Replaces 20 books in my collection which don't come close to the wisdom this book provides.
My favorite watercolor book.......2006-06-25
I have a library of over 60 watercolor books, and this is by far my favorite. I also own all of Wades's tapes, and his new CD. I find them to be an extension of the book. I took a workshop from a famous watercolor teacher who had us doing wash on top of wash. She must have gotten the idea from Wade as he has a section on just that topic. He covers washes on top of finished paintings that changes the character of the painting completely. A fasinating book that I return to over and over again.

Add collage watercolor for intersting & beautiful results.......1999-10-25
This book delves into the fascinating technique of adding collage elements to watercolor paintings. Basically, this is adding bits of paper of various shapes, textures & colors to the surface to enhance the painting over them.
Experimentation to develop a personal style is stressed here. Basic principles of texture, layering, contrast and color are explored first. Then you see how these elements are incorporated into finished paintings.
The author is an accomplished master of this technique. Many examples of his work are shown in progress & completed. He emphasizes throughout how artists of any level in any medium can apply these concepts to their work.
Whether or not you decide to emulate Brommer's work, this book is a great springboard of ideas and ways of looking at the painting process. It is filled with solid and helpful ideas.

Great watercolor lessons with beautiful paintings.......2007-03-16
This is a truly outstanding book to learn watercolor painting from. All of the step-by-step paintings are beautiful and inspiring, and very clearly explained with great step-by-step illustrations. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to learn watercolors at their own pace and have a choice of what he/she will be painting in a lesson. It's a beautiful book. Two of my favorite paintings to learn are an English garden scene with a fence and a scene from a canal in Venice. The colors are all outstanding. The cost of this book is cheaper than a single art lesson, but includes many lessons. I think both the beginner to the more advanced student can learn plenty from this book, and it does not intimidate you as some other instruction art books do. It makes it fun.
A new DK book by the same author, Watercolor Workshop II is coming out April 30th, 2007. I plan to buy it as soon as it comes out based on how good Watercolor Workshop has been. Its a great book, inexpensive, and very inspiring without overwhelming the student.
Excellent Beginner Book...The Best .......2006-06-21
I have been reading a lot of basic watercolors books and this book is by far the best one I have read. It has many, many step by step illustrations for each lesson. It is NOT a book of the author's artwork which will leave a beginner frustrated and lost. I am working on lesson one easily and I am enjoying learning. Better than taking a class with a lot of other students. This is a definate HOW-TO book for beginners as well as advanced. Just perfect...
Watercolor Magic.......2006-03-31
If you dream about painting in your spare moments, perhaps overlooking a placid lake in the middle of a magical kingdom...then this book may cause to you wonder why you have not purchased that portable easel. With this book, paint and outdoor scenes you can begin to create magical worlds on canvas. If your art teacher sent you to the library during art class, the step-by-step instructions could still bring out the artist in you.
Topics include: Paint, paper, brushes, brushstrokes, color wheels, color mixing, color blends, washes, painting effects, how to build a painting, composition, sketching, focal points, outdoor painting and specific scenes like cherries in a tree.
Projects:
Ballet Shoes
Cherries
Tuscan Landscape
Geese in the Park
Peony in a Jar
Boats on a Canal
Field Gate
Street Scenes
Chair by a Window
Cliffs and a Beach
Portrait
As someone who was sent to the library, I must say this book has been helpful. I can only say I have an extreme longing to buy that easel and head for Whidbey Island. I know a beach there...with a long walking trail. Suddenly a weekend vacation is sounding like a painting escape. If you love to travel, this book could be an entryway to memories of your vacations.
I am very excited about this particular book since recently my kitchen became filled with items decorated in Cherries and I've been imagining a border around the top filled with cherry art. The designs shown in this book would be very compatible with such an idea and all the instructions make painting seem a dream. Having the book first allows for exploration and adaptation. Once you have the book, you will know what else you need to begin a new hobby.
Throughout you will find inspirational paintings, exercises, step-by-step projects and a desire to leave the house for long summer days of artistic expression. Once you learn the techniques, the possibilities are endless. If you have been looking for a book on watercolors, this is the best one I've found recently.

This book inspires my creativity while teaching solid technique and the basics of good painting and design. I even like the ring binding format of the book that allows it to lay open flat while I experiment and work with the lessons. Would recommend based on Watercolor Workshop I.......2007-05-02
I am writing a "review" for this book, based on how much I enjoyed Watercolor Workshop I and how much I have looked forward to this one, (Watercolor Workshop II). Read my review for Watercolor Workshop I. It had some great paintings to do, and step-by-step directions. I think the book is well designed and there are many exciting styles and subjects to choose from, each one teaching you something new and helping develop skills. I am a beginner watercolorist, and have many watercolor books. I think this one stands out, and the price is certainly GREAT!!The Watercolorist's Essential Notebook: Landscapes
