Book Description
The environmental sciences are undergoing a revolution in the use of models and data. Facing ecological data sets of unprecedented size and complexity, environmental scientists are struggling to understand and exploit powerful new statistical tools for making sense of ecological processes.
In Models for Ecological Data, James Clark introduces ecologists to these modern methods in modeling and computation. Assuming only basic courses in calculus and statistics, the text introduces readers to basic maximum likelihood and then works up to more advanced topics in Bayesian modeling and computation. Clark covers both classical statistical approaches and powerful new computational tools and describes how complexity can motivate a shift from classical to Bayesian methods. Through an available lab manual, the book introduces readers to the practical work of data modeling and computation in the language R. Based on a successful course at Duke University and National Science Foundation-funded institutes on hierarchical modeling, Models for Ecological Data will enable ecologists and other environmental scientists to develop useful models that make sense of ecological data.
- Consistent treatment from classical to modern Bayes
- Underlying distribution theory to algorithm development
- Many examples and applications
- Does not assume statistical background
- Extensive supporting appendixes
- Accompanying lab manual in R

Book Description
This book describes the methods used to construct general circulation models of the atmosphere, and how such models perform in applications relating to the real climate and environmental systems. The author describes the fundamental dynamics of the atmospheric circulation, modelling of the general circulation, and applications of GCMs. The book consits of three parts:
- Part 1 summarizes the physical processes involved, including basic equations, waves and instabilities;
- Part 2 covers atmospheric structures, including various types of one- and two-dimensional structures and circulations;
- Part 3 describes the basic notions for construction of general circulation models of the atmosphere and their applications.
The text includes an appendix incorporating the basic data and mathematical formulae required to enable readers to construct GCMs for themselves.

Book Description
Many different mathematical and statistical methods are essential in crop modeling. They are necessary in the development, analysis and application of crop models. Up to now, however, there has been no single source where crop modelers could learn about these methods. Furthermore, these methods are often described in other contexts and their application to crop modeling is not always straightforward.
This book aims at making a large range of relevant mathematical and statistical methods accessible to crop modelers. Each methodology chapter starts from basic principles and simple applications and builds gradually to state-of-the-art methods. Crop models are used as examples, and practical advice on applying the methods to crop models is given.
Working with Dynamic Crop Models is an essential learning and reference resource for students and researchers who want to understand and apply rigorous methods to crop models. This book will also be of value for other fields which use dynamic models of complex systems.
Topics covered include:
* Parameter estimation- including Bayesian methods
* Model evaluation- including prediction quality and decision quality
* Sensitivity analysis- including global analysis and interactions
* Data assimilation- the Kalman filter and extensions
* Management optimization- including stochastic optimization
* Models for multiple fields- emphasizing how to obtain input values
* Crop models and crop breeding - recent advances in using crop

Book Description
This book is a collection of the lectures, held at the International Summer School ISSAOS-2000 in L'Aquila (Italy), given by invited lecturers coming from both Europe and the USA. The goal of the book is to provide a broad panorama of spaceborne remote sensing techniques, at both microwave and visible-infrared bands and by both active and passive sensors, for the retrieval of atmospheric and oceanic parameters. A significant emphasis is given to the physical modeling background, instrument potential and limitations, inversion methods and applications. Topics on international remote sensing programs and assimilation techniques into numerical weather forecast models are also touched.
The main purpose of the book is to offer to young scientists, Ph.D. or equivalent students, and to all who would like to have a broad-spectrum understanding of spaceborne remote sensing capabilities, introductory material to each remote sensing topic written by the most qualified experts in the field.

Models as Mediators: Perspectives on Natural and Social Science (Ideas in Context)
ASIN: 0804739722
Release Date: 2004-07-16 |
Book Description
Now that ‘3-D models’ are so often digital displays on flat screens, it is timely to look back at the solid models that were once the third dimension of science. This book is about wooden ships and plastic molecules, wax bodies and a perspex economy, monuments in cork and mathematics in plaster, casts of diseases, habitat dioramas, and extinct monsters rebuilt in bricks and mortar. These remarkable artefacts were fixtures of laboratories and lecture halls, studios and workshops, dockyards and museums. Considering such objects together for the first time, this interdisciplinary volume demonstrates how, in research as well as in teaching, 3-D models played major roles in making knowledge. Accessible and original chapters by leading scholars highlight the special properties of models, explore the interplay between representation in two dimensions and three, and investigate the shift to modelling with computers. The book is fascinating reading for anyone interested in the sciences, medicine, and technology, and in collections and museums.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2006-11-24
This book is a fascinating interdisciplinary effort: a collection of essays at the intersection of history, the visual arts, and the sciences. Students of art history, the history of science, and the history of education, in particular, will gain rich insight from reading it.

Book Description
The protection of our environment is one of the major problems in society. More and more important physical and chemical mechanisms are to be added to the air pollution models. Moreover, reliable and robust control strategies for keeping pollution caused by harmful compounds under certain safe levels have to be developed and used in a routine way. Well based and correctly analyzed large mathematical models can successfully be used to solve this task. The use of such models leads to the treatment of huge computational tasks. The efficient solution of such problems requires combined research from specialists working in different fields.
The NATO ARW held at Borovetz (Bulgaria), in the period 8-12 May, 2004 was devoted to the above questions. This book contains selected papers of the meeting in the following topics:
- improving the abilities of air pollution models to calculate reliable predictions of the pollution levels in a given domain and in real time by using adequate description of the physical and chemical processes,
- implementation of advanced numerical methods and algorithms in the models,
- efficient utilization of up-to-date computer architectures,
- development of mechanisms for studying particles (including here fine and ultra-fine particles), biogenic emissions, etc.
- optimization techniques in the study of the pollution levels, etc.
