A Monte Carlo Primer: A Practical Approach to Radiation Transport
Stephen A. Dupree , and Stanley K. Fraley Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0306467488 |
Book Description
This book introduces the reader to the use of Monte Carlo methods for solving practical problems in radiation transport, and will also serve as a reference work for practitioners in the field. It assumes the reader has a general knowledge of calculus and radiation physics, and a knowledge of Fortran programming, but assumes no prior knowledge of stochastic methods or statistical physics. The subject is presented by a combination of theoretical development and practical calculations. Because Monte Carlo methods are closely linked to the use of computers, from the beginning the reader is taught to convert the theoretical constructs developed in the text into functional software for use on a personal computer. Example problems provide the reader with an in-depth understanding of the concepts presented and lead to the production of a unique learning tool, a probabilistic framework code that models in a simple manner the features of production of Monte Carlo transport codes. This framework code is developed in stages such that every function is understood, tested, and demonstrated - random sampling, generating random numbers, implementing geometric models, using variance reduction, tracking particles in a random walk, testing the thoroughness with which the problem phase space is sampled, scoring detectors, and obtaining estimates of uncertainty in results. Advanced topics covered include criticality, correlated sampling, adjoint transport, and neutron thermalization.

An Introduction to the Passage of Energetic Particles through Matter
N.J Carron Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0750309350 |
Book Description
Identifying where to access data, extracting a needed subset from available resources, and knowing how to interpret the format in which data are presented can be time-consuming tasks for scientists and engineers. By collecting all of this information and providing a background in physics, An Introduction to the Passage of Energetic Particles through Matter enables specialists and nonspecialists alike to understand and apply the data. Making modern data more accessible, this book explores the interactions with matter of energetic particles, including photons, electrons, protons, alpha particles, and neutrons. It presents quantities of interest in many applications, such as photon and neutron cross sections, charged particle stopping powers, electron mean ranges, and angular distributions. The book also discusses electron multiple scattering and models for electron mean range against both stopping power and scattering. The author uses numerous graphs throughout the book to illustrate the material and describes the basic physics underlying all processes. The accompanying CD-ROM includes full datasets and large color contour graphs of cross sections, stopping powers, and ranges in all elements at all interesting energies. Compiling information that is scattered throughout the literature, An Introduction to the Passage of Energetic Particles through Matter provides a comprehensive foundation of particle interactions that is of prime importance to many areas of applied physics and supplies an introduction to the massive, invaluable Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF) library.

Barons of the Sky: From Early Flight to Strategic Warfare: The Story of the American Aerospace Industry

Book Description
A 1991 New York Times Notable Book of the Year
This panoramic history of the rise of the American aerospace industry traces the careers of the men whose names became synonymous with today's military-industrial complex: Glenn Martin of Martin Marietta, Donald Douglas of McDonnell Douglas, Jack Northrop of Northrop, and Allan and Malcolm Loughead of Lockheed. Weaving together institutional history and individual biography, Wayne Biddle depicts the years of uncertainty after World War I, the bonanza of World War II, and the cutthroat postwar market. Unlike the automobile industry, the aircraft industry could never be sustained by the middle-class consumer economy, and these legendary founders had to depend on the federal government to keep their companies aloft. Barons of the Sky tells a thrilling story of obsessed men who, chasing their dreams of flight and success, created the modern aerospace weapons industry.

Numerical Simulations of Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow on a Personal Computer (Transport Processes in Engineering)
S. Kotake , and K. Hijikata Manufacturer: Elsevier Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0444898115 |
Book Description
This book describes methodologies for performing numerical simulations of transport processes in heat transfer and fluid flow. The reader is guided to make the proper selection of simulation techniques and to interpret the acquired results based on the flow physics involved. Computer programs which are used to solve heat transfer and fluid flow problems are integrated into the text. Illustrative examples of thermo-fluid phenomena are provided in every chapter to enhance understanding of the subjects by offering the reader hands-on experience of numerical simulations.
Most of the fundamental transport processes in heat transfer and fluid flow, e.g. heat conduction in a solid body, convection heat transfer of a fin, laminar and turbulent heat transfer and flow in a duct or tube, and boundary layers over a flat plate are covered. A strong emphasis is placed on examinations of the thermo-fluid phenomena inside a flow passage (such as tube and a channel). The book contains detailed discussions on the formulation of the boundary conditions which is often the key issue in making successful numerical simulations of the physical phenomena of interest.
Simulations are carefully designed so that conventional 16-bit personal computers, such as IBM PC® or Apple Macintosh® can be used. Visualizing the simulated results in graphic form (plotting charts and line contours of physical variables) significantly enhances the reader's understanding of the important transport processes. The book is intended as an introductory text for numerical simulations of heat transfer and fluid flow phenomena. Description is simple and self-contained so that beginners can easily understand the material, yet it will also serve as a useful reference work for the practitioner. Exercise problems are supplied by which the reader can consolidate knowledge of simulation techniques described and gain further insight in the physical processes of interest.
The book contains two 3½ inch floppy disks, each of which stores a complete set of simulation source codes discussed in the text. These programs are recorded in ASCII format and can be run either on IBM PC® or Macintosh® using QuickBasic®. The programs are well-documented within the text as well as in the codes themselves with a number of comment statements. This helps the reader understand the flow of program runs and, if the reader so wishes, modifying the original source codes. To facilitate prescription of the physical conditions for simulations, these programs run in a highly interactive mode. In addition, the diskettes contain a number of compiled programs which can be executed without the QuickBasic® program.
