    Book Description

Human beings have always looked at the heavens and asked: Are we alone? Is there life elsewhere in the universe? What is that life like? Unfortunately, people can't actually travel to other solar systems. Even the closest stars are too far away to visit. Today, astrophysicists such as Jill Tarter are looking for other ways to search for extraterrestrial life. Jill is the director of Project Phoenix at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. SETI stands for "Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence." Twice a year, Jill and her team travel to the mountains of Puerto Rico where they use the world's largest radio telescope to examine nearby stars. They search the sky, listening for radio signals that, if found and verified, would provide strong evidence that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe. Author Ellen Jackson and photographer Nic Bishop introduce us to a dedicated scientist and her thrilling, rigorous, and awe-inspiring work in the field.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best general introduction to SETI.......2003-11-19

Science journalist Walter Sullivan of the New York Times published the first version of this book in 1964, when the radio astronomy search for extraterrestrial intelligence was new. Thirty years later, he updated and broadened the story. Even though the second version is now nine years old, it still is the best general introduction for anyone new to SETI.

Sullivan sets the stage with chapters describing how earlier conceptions of the universe were revised, giving us basic information about modern scientific views of stars and planetary systems. He touches on the origin of life, how organic materials might be spread through space, and the search for life on Mars. He describes the Drake formula for determining the probability of extraterrestrial life, and the modern radio astronomy search for extraterrestrial signals. Sullivan addresses the possibility of interstellar flight and discusses the Fermi Paradox. He briefly describes the UFO phenomenon, concluding that there is no convincing evidence that we have been visited. Sullivan's final chapter presents some of the speculations about the consequences of contact with ETI. The writing is clear and non-technical. The book includes a few diagrams and some black and white photographs.

    Book Description

If you are interested in how researchers plan to search the heavens for signs of intelligent life, you should have this book. SETI 2020 is a new, and remarkably comprehensive study of how scientists busy with the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) should direct their efforts between now and the year 2020. Distilling the work of dozens of top SETI experts, astronomers, and technology mavens, this book gives an overview of the problem of finding evidence for extraterrestrial technologies, and how to best address it. New radio telescopes consisting of large arrays of relatively small antennas are proposed and detailed. So are new types of antennas that can survey the entire sky at once. Of particular interest is the extensive treatment of optical SETI - the search for signals beamed our way using high-powered, pulsed lasers or their equivalent. A book that's interesting for both the layman and the technically sophisticated, SETI 2020 is the definitive publication in this fascinating field.

5 out of 5 stars Reality and SETI.......2006-02-28

SETI 2020 is essential reading for everyone with a serious interest in the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence or, indeed, radio astronomy in general. More than fifty of the World's leading experts contributed to this work which has been finely crafted into one coherent volume
Originally intended to encourage financial contributions-at which it has succeeded admirably-this book describes the historical development of the Institute's work and looks forward to methods which depend on currently developing technology. Reality is already catching up with its predictions, which shows how realistic the expectations of the Institute are.
Much of the book describes the science and technologies specific to the search, but there are also discussions about topics of wider interest such as the origins of the "Fermi Paradox", high-powered lasers, various ways of measuring time, and many others.

4 out of 5 stars Technically impressive, but not stirring.......2003-09-28

This book reports the recommendations of a scientific and technical working group that met periodically from 1997 to 1999 to chart the future of research and technology development for SETI, the scientific search for extraterrestrial intelligence. That group was assembled and funded by the SETI Institute, the leading institution in the field. The report focuses first on strategic objectives, then on search strategies and options for new telescope and computer designs.

This document was intended to be a landmark comparable to the visionary Project Cyclops report published in 1972. Technological advances since then -- particularly in computer technology -- clearly justified a fresh review. SETI 2020 recommends broadening the frequency range of searches to include optical and infrared wavelengths, looking for both continuous wave and pulsed signals, and using multiple beams per telescope in microwave searches. The report recommends that the SETI Institute undertake the development and construction of a One Hectare Radio Telescope, and an omnidirectional SETI system that could allow continuous, all-sky coverage for the low end of the microwave window. The Working Group also endorsed some existing strategies: using systems for both targeted searches and sky surveys, and focusing on beacons.

Nearly half of this book consists of technical appendices. The most intriguing of them is Jill Tarter's review of the Project Cyclops report from the perspective of 25 years later. Not only has technological advance improved our capabilities and widened our options; we also know more about the science involved.

Those readers with a serious interest in the technical means astronomers use to search for evidence of intelligence beyond the Earth will find this book very informative. It will tell most readers all they want to know about the technology issues, though less about the science. While the language is clear and straightforward, it lacks the stirring, visionary quality of the Cyclops report. Perhaps that is a sign that SETI has matured. Or it could be the result of drafting by committee. Those readers who are looking for an introduction to SETI or a general overview of that field should look elsewhere, particularly in view of the outrageous price.

This product is very low quality. The files on the disk are poorly organized and the pdf's do not print well (edges cut off, etc.). But fundamentally this CD is a waste of money - you can get the contents on-line for free at NASA, SETI, etc., websites. And more importantly, you will get far more up-to-date information. If you want the latest fascinating information on astrobiology, this is not the place to get it. You are much better off browsing various NASA, astronomy and science magazine websites, and especially the free and very current "Astrobiology Magazine" site.

            Book Description

The first chapter of this book is actually a term paper for an astronomy class that I took at the University of Texas at Austin. The book Contact by Carl Sagan was required additional reading for the class. Since that book was science fiction, I twisted my professor's arm into letting me write a science fiction term paper. He said that I would still have to do all the research that the other students were doing for their papers. It was a deal, so thus, the bibliography is in the back. I used the name of my alter ego, Sciborg Sam, for the hero.

I would dress up in my cyborg get up on Halloween and call myself Sciborg Sam. The journey starts off as Sciborg Sam enters into the cosmic wormhole destined for a star system called Seventy Virginis which actually has been discovered to have a planet in orbit that is four times the size of Jupiter (discovered in 1996). The planets that he goes to are farther out in the habitable zone (where water is in a liquid state).

Sciborg Sam discovers war torn ruins on the planet of Palenquelima at first. Then out of the forests, he meets alien intelligence. There were more than one species of bipedal intelligent life. He befriends the first specie and becomes an honorary member of the tribe of Lancranacras. Later he meets the specie from a tribe that is at war with the armies of another. He is then called upon by a mystical power from the sister planet to complete the circle of peace on Palenquelima.

Meanwhile, back on the Earth, corruption runs rampant as large corporations compete for the bids to work on the space missions to come. Shapinski and Gonzales, two secret police, work hard to narrow it down and find one man to be the culprit of it all. The clues start their trail in New York City leading them to Dallas, Texas and back to New York stopping the evil culprit dead in his tracks. But the damage that has been done still has to be reversed. This takes it back to Palenquelima as true justice is finally met.

              Book Description

Volatile organic solvents are the normal media used in both research scale and industrial scale synthesis of organic chemicals. Their environmental impact is significant, however, and so the development of alternative reaction media has become of great interest.Developments in the use of water as a solvent for organic synthesis have reached the point where it could now be considered a viable solvent for many organic reactions. Organic Reactions in Water demonstrates the underlying principles of using water as a reaction solvent and, by reference to a range of reaction types and systems, it 's effective use in synthetic organic chemistry. Written by an internationally respected team of contributors, and with a strong focus on the practical use of water as a reaction medium, this book illustrates the enormous potential of water for the development of new and unique chemistries and synthetic strategies, while at the same time offering a much reduced environmental impact.

                Book Description

The use of water as a medium for promoting organic reactions has been rather neglected in the development of organic synthesis, despite the fact that it is the solvent in which almost all biochemical processes take place. Chemists have only recently started to appreciate the enormous potential water has to offer in the development of new synthetic reactions and strategies, where it can offer benefits in both unique chemistry and reduced environmental impact.
In this new book, the editor, well known for his contribution to the development of water as a useful medium in synthetic organic chemistry, has assembled an international team of authors, themselves at the forefront of research into the use of the unique properties of water carrying out organic transformations, to provide a timely and concise overview of current research.
By focusing on the practical use of water in synthetic organic chemistry, and with the concern for the use of solvents in organic chemistry, professional chemists, particularly those involved in industrial research and development, will find this book an essential guide to the current state of the art, and a useful starting point in their own research. Academic chemists, including postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students, will find this book an invaluable guide to this exciting and important area of chemistry.

                    Book Description

Despite the growing interest in this new generation of water soluble carbon-chain polymers, there are few books available covering their physicochemical properties. Professor Kirsh has addressed this by writing a book which brings together data on their synthesis, properties and applications. The best known of the group is poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone (PVP), discovered in Germany in 1939, hence this book concentrates on PVP and the correlation of its properties with other poly-N-vinylamides. Poly-N-vinylamides are widely used in the creation of many synthetic polymeric materials and recent discoveries have increased their use in medicine and biotechnology. This book will therefore appeal to a wide readership from polymer and materials scientists, through to biotechnologists and those working in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.

                      Description:
The synthesis of new copolysiloxane-imide polymers was carried out from a,w-dimethylsiloxane oligomers and aromatic di-anhydrides (PMDA and 6FDA) to obtain soluble siloxane-imide based polymers (PSI) endowed both with organophile properties and good physical membrane properties. Synthesized PSI block copolymers had high weight contents of siloxane residue varying from 70 to 94 wt.%; their pervaporation properties were studied towards ethanol-water feed mixtures (EtOH: 10 and 50wt.%) at 40 ^oC. The two block copolymer series-fluorinated and not fluorinated - were both highly selective for ethanol removal from water. The registered pervaporation properties demonstrated that the membrane flux and the selectivity could be tailored with the polymer microstructures; in particular, much higher permeabilities were obtained with the fluorinated series than with the PDMA series whereas the alcohol selectivity was kept constant or slightly increased. These results showed that fluorinated PSI materials are promising candidates for the extraction of organic compounds from water mixtures.
