      Book Description

Visualization of nucleic acids has become indispensable to studying cells, tissues, and organisms. Certain techniques even permit quantification of DNA and/or RNA distribution in tissues, but few current analytical books cover the numerous methods for DNA and RNA visualization. This book provides insight into several classic techniques, histological as well as histochemical, that can be used to appreciate the nucleic acid status of the cell as well as to provide an overview of RNA and DNA distribution in cells and tissues. Genome Visualization by Classic Methods in Light Microscopy begins with an introduction to DNA and RNA, followed by general visualization principles. The subsequent chapters describe: how to prepare tissues for staining; the principles, chemical formulas, and procedures for nuclear dye, fluorescent dye, and histochemical methods; directions to observe the products of the stained reactions; and more. Each protocol is presented as easy-to-follow directions and the author includes cautionary notes and points to consider. The final section provides color photographs of various tissues in which the staining method, fixative, and observations are noted. A theoretical and practical book, Genome Visualization by Classic Methods in Light Microscopy allows you to understand which technique is most useful for your particular problem. Laboratory protocols are provided for you to follow, chemical structures and principles are provided for you to understand the technique, and the book is organized so you can find the necessary information when needed. This is the essential guide to understanding and executing visualization techniques for nucleic acids.

          Book Description

Since the first edition of Light Microscopy in Biology: A Practical approach was published, techniques in modern light microscopy have improved considerably. This fully updated edition includes revised topics from the first edition as well as coverage of techniques and technologies that have been developed since it was published. As before, the book starts with an explanation of the basic techniques, and goes on to describe current methods in: chromosome microscopy, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, image building and video microscopy. Totally new topics covered include: confocal microscopy, calcium and pH imaging, microinjection techniques and nanovid microscopy. There are also whole chapters now devoted to reflection contrast microscopy and histomorphometry. This new edition will be of great interest to postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers in biomedicine and cell biology - both those experienced with light microscopic techniques and newcomers to the field.

            Book Description

Laser micromanipulation--implying perforation, cutting and welding of biological objects using. optical tweezers, as well as moving them just by using, forces generated by a laser microbeam--is becoming an increasingly popular technique for studying biological objects, especially automatedDNA sequencing. This book is an excellent introduction to the basics and primarily biological applications of optical trapping and laser microbeam techniques. The author, one of the pioneers of the microbeam technique, examines the field in depth, covering basic physical principles to applications in cell and molecular biology, and biomedicine. This book bridges the gap between physicists who understand the underlying principles of the method but are not aware of its numerous biological applications, and biologists who seek background information on the underlying principles.

I work in Optical Tweezers and have done for a few years now. This book is very interesting, so much so that I'd love to own a copy! Unfortunately, I can't really afford it, but it'll certainly be on my Wish List! My supervisor saw it and is going to buy one for the group, so at least I'll have easy access to it.

                      Book Description

An international research project known as Biological Investigations of Marine Antarctic Systems and Stocks or BIOMASS was a unique, 15-year, international research program established to investigate the ecology of the Southern Ocean. This volume summarizes the results of this monumental research effort and provides a succinct, state-of-the-art account of the ecology of the Southern Ocean, covering the physical marine environment, marine stocks (phytoplankton, zooplankton, krill, fish, and birds), marine systems, and future research endeavors.

                        Book Description

All coastal areas are facing a growing range of stresses and shocks, the scale of which now poses threats to the resilience of both human and environmental coastal systems. Responsible agencies are seeking better ways of managing the causes and consequences of the environmental change process in coastal zones. This volume discusses the basic principles underpinning a more integrated approach to coastal management and highlights the obstacles that may be met in practice in both developed and developing countries. Successful strategies will have to encompass all the elements of management, from planning and design through financing and implementation, as highlighted in this book. This book includes a CD-ROM with computer visualisation of field data and water quality modelling. There are also movie clips of spectacular scenes.

                            Book Description

This book brings together an international group of scientists focusing on present-day and fossil cephalopods, ranging broadly from Paleozoic ammonoids to today's octopods. It has three general sections dealing with: systematics and evolution; descriptions of hard- and soft part morphology; and ecology, biogeography, and taphonomy. Several highlights include new evidence for the existence of an ink sac in fossil ammonoids, a biogeographic study of clymeniid ammonoids throughout the world, the first record of a radula in baculite ammonoids, and an in-depth study of octopus ecology in Alaska. The book is remarkable in its treatment of both fossil and living forms at the same time, with the aim of presenting the wide diversity of cephalopods now and in the past.

                              Book Description

This book provides the first comprehensive overview of coastal management in Australia. It demonstrates the global significance of the coast and the international imperative to manage it properly. The book focuses on the pressures being placed on the Australian coast by demonstrating the
linkages between coastal processes and human impacts through an interesting series of case studies, rather than a classic text book approach. The book is also useful because it provides a background to the various coastal management systems operating in Australia and then illustrates how these work
in practice, using selected 'real world' examples from the different states and territories.

                                Book Description

Data assimilation is considered a key component of numerical ocean model development and new data acquisition strategies. The basic concept of data assimilation is to combine real observations via estimation theory with dynamic models. Related methodologies exist in meteorology, geophysics and engineering. Of growing importance in physical oceanography, data assimilation can also be exploited in biological and chemical oceanography. Such techniques are now recognized as essential to understand the role of the ocean in a global change perspective. The book focuses on data processing algorithms for assimilation, current methods for the assimilation of biogeochemical data, strategy of model development, and the design of observational data for assimilation.
