Book Description
This atlas of functional ultrastructure provides not only a detailed insight into the complex structure and organization of cells and tissues but also into specific functions fulfilled by the various cellular organelles and the dynamics of the different processes inside cells. The large collection of electron micrographs, together with those from immunoelectron microscopy, is complemented by thorough explanatory texts and schemes. Emphasis was placed on an integrated view of structure and function to show that subcellular organelles provide the structural foundation for fundamental processes of living organisms. Specialized cell types form the various tissues, and principles of tissue organization are presented. Under various conditions of disease, characteristic structural alterations may occur which are illustrated with examples thus providing a valuable source of information for scientists and students of Medicine and Biological Sciences, particularly of Histology, Cell and Molecular Biology.

Customer Reviews:
Electron microscopy for biologists.......2007-05-14
This book is a very good technical introduction to the electron microscopy of biological samples. Good figures and schemes help to understand the text. Photos of different types of samples are also adequate to illustrate the methods. The book is an excellent manual for beginners and biologists find it useful and easy to read.
Excellent Book.......2006-04-06
This book is excellent for beginners and advanced microscopists. It offers fine details and tricks about techniques as well as the theory behind it. There are lots of pictures and schematics for each descriptions. It is also useful for microscopist that want to learn more about different methods. I definitively recommend it!
Excellent EM primer.......2001-06-26
I actually had the opportunity to receive instruction from Prof. Bozzola in both Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and acquired the book for those reasons. It is not common to find even a textbook with such well-detailed instructions from beginning level to advanced for a myriad of topics in the field. Of course, there is a very significant focus on biological applications, so some portions of the book are not entirely relevant to materials science folks like myself. This book covers the basics of optics, sample preparation, imaging, photography and film developing, and specifics about both TEMs and SEMs. This book is a very good investment for anyone intending to perform work with such instruments.
If you are learning EM you must have this book..........2000-05-11
This is a great book for those entering the field of EM study. It takes you step by step through both SEM and TEM sample prep and analysis. It is packed with helpful pictures and diagrams. It will be a book you will refer to for methodology and protocal from fixation to sectioning...I really love this book.

Book Description
The Air Spora is an illustrated guide to trapping, identifying and quantifying airborne biological particles such as fungus and plant spores and pollen. This book will be of use to anyone interested in aerobiology or studying applied aspects such as dispersal and effect of allergens, or human, animal and plant pathogens. Including a comprehensive review of what is in the air and detailing the historical development of theories leading to modern aerobiology, the book explains the fundamental processes behind airborne dispersal and techniques used to sample, identify and quantify biological particles. Methods are explained in a step-by-step guide for the use of standard air sampling devices. Although formats applicable to modern molecular and immunological techniques are described, the emphasis of the book is on simple visual identification of particles in air samples using traditional microscopy. Consequently a chapter on setting-up and using a light microscope is included, although experienced researchers can skip to chapters showing photographs of examples of the Air Spora and nine colour plates of paintings of airborne particles at a magnification of x1000.
"I recommend this book to those actively running or thinking of running a pollen and spore trapping program. It will also be of value to doctors, allergists, and those teaching the basics of palynology, wishing to include a lecture or two on air spora."

I have looked at many microscope books in vain, before this one, to find clear explanations of the key topics in optical microscopy for my graduate students. None come close to competing with the Slayters.

Book Description
In situ hybridization is a technique that allows for the visualization of specific DNA and RNA sequences in individual cells, and is an especially important method for studying nucleic acids in heterogeneous cell populations. in situ Hybridization in Electron Microscopy reviews the three main methods developed for the ultrastructural visualization of genes: ° hybridization on ultrathin sections of tissue embedded in hydrophilic resin (post-embedding method) ° hybridization prior to embedding (pre-embedding) ° hybridization on ultrathin sections of frozen tissue (frozen tissue method). For each technique, the different stages are described in detail: the preparation of tissue, pretreatment, hybridization, and visualization of the hybridization products. The book combines theory and practice, starting with the basic principles, then breaking down the experimental process into successive steps illustrated by numerous diagrams, detailed protocols, and tables. This is all done in a format that uses parallel columns to convey useful comments next to the theory and practical details alongside each stage of the protocol. Additionally, the summary tables provide the criteria for choosing the probe type and technique, and a detailed index aids in the search for information. in situ Hybridization In Electron Microscopy is an essential companion for applying these methods at the electron microscopic level.

Physical Principles of Electron Microscopy: An Introduction to TEM, SEM, and AEM
ASIN: 0521385393 |
Book Description
This is an extensively illustrated laboratory manual of transmission electron microscopy techniques for the laboratory technician, graduate student, or researcher. Chapters begin with a general discussion, move on to the chemicals and equipment required for the method being described and conclude with a step-by-step presentation of the method and instructions for the preparation of solutions. Notes at the end of each chapter warn of possible pitfalls and outline "tricks of the trade". The methods and techniques outlined have been tested for over ten years in clinical and research laboratory situations, and are entirely reliable. Practical Electron Microscopy covers fixation, dehydration and embedding, semithin and thin sectioning, the electron microscope, and photography. For this new edition, the chapters on photography and the electron microscope have been completely rewritten and two new chapters have been added, one on immunoelectron microscopy using colloidal gold, and one dealing with such special techniques as retrieving specimens from paraffin and handling nasal brushings and blood samples.

Book Description
This fourth edition of the highly acclaimed Diagnostic Virology includes a new chapter on the human retroviruses, especially relevant since the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and expands the chapters on the arboviruses and hepatitis viruses. Generously illustrated, it is a concise, easy to use reference for the lab.
Book Description
This book demonstrates the applications of synchrotron radiation in certain aspects of cell microbiology, specifically non-destructive elemental analyses, chemical-state analyses and imaging (distribution) of the elements within a cell. The basics for understanding and applications of synchrotron radiation are also described to make the contents easier to be understood for a wide group of researchers in medical and biological sciences who might not be familiar with the physics of synchrotron radiation. The two main techniques that are discussed in this book are the x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and the x-ray fine structure analysis (XAFS). Application of these techniques in investigations of several important scientific fields, such as neurodegeneration and other diseases related to cell malfunctioning, are demonstrated in this book.

Book Description
Major improvements in instrumentation and specimen preparation have brought SEM to the fore as biological imaging technique. In FESEM, a field-emission cathode placed in the electron gun of a scanning electron microscopeprovides narrower probing beams and high electron energy. The result is improved spatial resolution and minimized sample charging and damage. Iamges produced are less diestrored and have a spatial resolution down to 1.5 nm, three to six times betterh than conventional SEM.
Although this imaging technique has undergone tremendous developments, it is still poorly represented in the literature, limited to journal articlesand chapter s in books. These editors plan a comprehensive volume dedicated to the theory and practical application of FESEM in biological samples. It provides a comprehensive explanatation of insturmentation, applications, and protocols, and is intended to teach the reader how to operate such microscopes to obtain the best quality images.
