                      Book Description

The image to the right shows a volcanic landscape in central Africa, including parts of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). This image was obtained from the SIR-C multi-wavelength radar remote sensing system, operated on the space shuttle Endeavor in 1994. SIR-C monitors the earth's surface using wave-lengths of energy that are much longer than the visible light seen by the human eye; thus, the hues in this "false color" radar image have little to no relationship to what would be seen in ordinary visible light. The volcano at top center of the image is Karisimba, 4500 m high. The green patch on the lower slopes of Karisimba volcano, to the right of its peak, is an area of bamboo forest-one of the world's few remaining habitats for mountain gorillas. Only some 600-700 mountain gorillas still remain on earth. Because the SIR-C radar is virtually unaffected by weather conditions, it is an ideal tool for capturing images over the cloudy and misty volcanic areas where mountain gorillas live. Nyiragongo volcano (3465 m elevation) dominates the lower portion of the image some of the lava flows that surround it have a distinctive purple appearance in this image. As shown here, remote sensing in wavelengths of energy outside the range of visible light can often reveal aspects of our environment that complement what can be detected by the unaided eye. (This image covers a 24 km by 60 km area.) The global image (inset, below) is a composite view of vegetation cover on land and chlorophyll concentration in the oceans. This image was derived from data collected by the SeaWiFS global ocean color monitoring mission. Wide field-of-view sensors such as SeaWiFS permit continuous, long-term monitoring of the environment on a global scale, providing an important contribution to our understanding of the earth system as a single, integrated whole.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutly One of the BEST!!.......2004-04-16

This book is one of the best on the market on Image Interpretation. After taking a class and the instructor had a different book (which was poorly written book) I bought this book. I found it interesting and easy to use, any math was explained step by step! I cant wait to get the 5th edition! This is a must for any person who is interested in this topic or is working in the field.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books in RS.......2000-10-12

One of the best text books in Remote Sensing: comprehensive, complete. I have the 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions. Will wait to the 4th edition in paperback.

4 out of 5 stars A good technical overview of RS.......1998-02-12

The text is a comprehensive introduction to RS that covers the science from physical basis to sensors and applications. It is not a HOW-TO-DO-IT book as opposed to a complete textbooks for students in this area who need good background of the science and its application. We use it as a good textbook for solid foundation prior to more practical texts on HOW-TO-DO-IT.

2 out of 5 stars Drawn out, very difficult to follow.......1996-05-22

Imagine a textbook without a glossary of terms. A book thatseems to use fancy nomenclature only as a tool to boostthe authors egos. Having strained through this text only by shear interest in Remote, I would advise any academic to look towards the piles of other more appropriatly constructed textbooks concerned with remote. As to the publishers claim that it also concerns itself with GIS applications, yes, but in an obscure and unfriendly manner. Do not consider this book as a textbook choice. It only serves to discredit the noble and forthright advances of a vital technology.

                        Book Description

The interpretation of remote sensing images requires knowledge of the instruments used to acquire the images as well as the computer processing techniques used to generate them. Remote Sensing for Geologists: A Guide to Image Interpretation covers technology and processing techniques as they directly relate to interpreting imagery. This book is a manual of image interpretation that demonstrates what to look for on imagery when engaged in mineral or hydrocarbon exploration, mine and oil field development, engineering projects, and environmental monitoring. Four sections comprise this volume: project initiation; exploration techniques; exploitation and engineering remote sensing; and environmental concerns. They combine to provide you with a solid foundation of what image interpretation is, and enables you to recognize features of interest and effectively use imagery in projects for the petroleum, mining, or groundwater industries. About the Author Gary Prost obtained a BSc in Geology from Northern Arizona University and an MSc and PhD in Geology from the Colorado School of Mines. Over the past 25 years Prost has worked for the US Geological Survey, the Superior Oil Company (oil and minerals), and Amoco Production Company, serving four and a half years as the supervisor of the remote sensing group. His remote sensing experience includes both mineral and oil exploration in the United States and in more than thirty other countries. He is presently exploring for oil in frontier areas of Canada.

Drury has accomplished a very comprehensive, yet understandable book. It focuses on satellite interpretation, especially on the Landsat series and holds many useful hints for the interpreter as well as background information of all systems like radar, Landsat TM or photography. The book is a how to guide for getting the most out of your remote sensing pictures without being a computer course. The chapter about interpretation of features in Geology is rather short, yet informative. With the affordable price and the easy-to-read attitude it's a must buy for interested geologists.

                            Book Description

This volume is devoted to satellite radar interferometry (InSAR), a relatively new remote sensing technique used for geodetic applications such as topographic mapping and for high-accuracy monitoring of deformation of the Earth's crust. It offers a geodetic perspective of the technique, using a functional and a stochastic model to describe the relation between the observations and parameters and to discuss issues such as accuracy, robustness, and error propagation. It explains both theory and applications and provides a resource for future studies in the field. Radar Interferometry presents a geodetic technique, complementary to GPS, laser altimetry, photogrammetry, and leveling and comments on its pros and cons for various applications. It features the technique of radar interferometry meteorology, a new application in the field of atmospheric studies. Fine-resolution mapping of the atmospheric water vapor distribution offers new insights for meteorologists.
Audience: Radar Interferometry: Data Interpretation and Error Analysis is designed for researchers and professionals in geodesy, geophysics, and meteorology that can benefit from the use of remote sensing using interferometric radar.

                              Description:
An analysis of tropical rain forest covering Amazonian lowlands has highlighted a systematic across-path, east-west radiometric gradient within Landsat TM imagery. Visual assessment of 45 and quantitative analysis of 20 Amazonian Landsat-4 and -5 TM scenes show that the gradient is band dependent and pronounced in visible light bands 1 to 3 but significant also in IR bands 4 to 7. The results show that the scan line location of a pixel explains a considerable amount of the DN variation of forests in the width of the entire scene (B1: 70%, B2: 52%, B3: 44%, B4: 34%, B5: 46%, B7: 39%). In digital numbers, the difference between east and west side of a scene may be small (9, 4, 3, 10, 9, 3, respectively) but these differences become significant if the images are to be mosaicked, or the data are used for mapping relatively subtle differences of natural forests. Apparently, the gradient is a result of at least three factors: 1) shadows caused by the undulating terrain, 2) anisotropic reflectance of the varying surfaces, and 3) atmospheric scattering. The phenomenon becomes more significant when the sun is high and the scanning line is close to solar azimuth direction-a condition more easily encountered in lower latitudes of the earth.

                                Description:
This paper assessed the use of optical and SAR imagery for crop identification in an operational context with a particular emphasis on actual crop diversity and information delivery time. Fifteen ERS and Radarsat and 3 optical images were used to discriminate agricultural crop types based on dedicated per-parcel classification and photo interpretation schemes. For crop area control, the efficiency concept was introduced as a complementary indicator of classification performance. A set of 6571 parcels were classified into 39 crop types from various combinations of images. The efficiency computed from an independent set of 899 parcels peaked based on a combination of optical images and 3 to 5 SAR images. Moreover, the delivery time of the relevant information was improved when SAR data was included. The hierarchical classification strategy based on nested classifications also improved the operational crop control system for all image combinations. Finally, this research documented the respective contributions of optical and SAR time series for any control system of agricultural land.

                                  Description:
This study presents the combined analysis of RADARSAT products of different spatial resolutions acquired under different incidence angles for mapping burnt scars on forested areas of Central Portugal. Prior to the SAR data analysis, a number of pre-processing procedures were carried out. Noise was eliminated by adaptive texture preserving filtering. A specific algorithm for the geocoding of SAR images, based on a range-Doppler approach, enabled precise geocoding of the SAR data by means of a single very accurate ground control point. A novel incidence-angle-normalization for SAR imagery was applied to analyze the backscatter coefficient to a given incidence angles. Further, a backscatter coefficient analysis was performed according to the slope on forested areas and fire disturbed areas. A qualitative and quantitative investigation of the backscattering as related to the slope angle and time changes was performed. As a result of this analysis, the scenes that allowed maximizing the discrimination of burnt areas were selected as the input for the neural network classification. The investigation on the effect of the SAR incidence angle in burnt area discrimination determined that low incidence angles are required for discriminating burnt areas in hilly regions. It was also demonstrated that topography influences the level of discrimination of burnt areas since areas affected by forest fires on face-slopes presents higher backscatter coefficient than those back-slopes. Therefore, SAR data can play a significant role for burnt area mapping in Europe in those areas where optical data cannot be used due to persistent cloud cover.

                                    Description:
This study aims to prepare a detailed GIS-based geomorphological map accompanied with landfill sites of Dhaka city area which can be used for multipurpose functionality. Attainment of the geomorphological map is based upon interpretation of the oldest available aerial photographs (1:40,000) and contemporary topographic maps (1:8000) which reflect almost pre-urban ground of Dhaka. Randomly distributed 160 boreholes have been used to prepare representative soil profiles (RSP) to identify the near-surface lithology of the geomorphological units. The study reveals that 13 out of 18 low-lying geomorphic units, comprising 65% of the total area demand landfill practices for urban development. Landfill sites have been merged with urban growth on each low-lying geomorphic unit using a spatially enhanced fused image of IRS-1D PAN and ETM+ bands 5, 4 and 3, acquired February 2000 and 2002, respectively. We found that 43% area of the total low-lying geomorphic units experience fill practices so far. The fill sites have been differentiated into four classes based on their relative thickness. Integration of fill classes with geomorphological map shows the urban dynamics of Dhaka city area till 2002. Due to GIS integration, this map can be rapidly updated to demonstrate temporal modifications in urban ground. It can be used effectively in different geomorphological hazard mapping and urban land-use practices.
