One of the most fascinating problems in biology is how a single cell, the fertilised egg, gives rise to a new individual. The fertilised egg divides many times to form an embryo. This volume in the Frontiers in Molecular Biology series discusses the methods by which cells in distinct regions of an embryo become different, a process known as patterning. Patterning is fundamental to establishing the spatial organisation of the developing embryo. It ensures that all the parts of the body are generated and that they form in exactly the right places. The ultimate in patterning is the formation of precise arrangements of specialised cells and tissues within each organ. Understanding the process of patterning during the embryonic development of vertebrates is a particular challenge for developmental biologists because vertebrates have an intricate and complex anatomy and histology. The first two chapters of Patterning in Vertebrate Development are introductory, explaining to the reader the general principles of vertebrate patterning and early embryology. The subsequent chapters address patterning in both nervous system and specific parts of the body. Each chapter provides a detailed review of current research in a specific area of interest. These include topics such as neural specification, antero-posterior patterning of the neural tube, and molecular basis of vertebrate limb development. Throughout the volume, examples are drawn from a number of species, and particular emphasis is placed on recent discoveries about the molecular basis of patterning in vertebrates. The book concludes with a chapter which revisits many of the regions of the embryo previously discussed from an evolutionary perspective.

This is a great book, for sure the best and most comprehensive book on stochastic hydrogeology available today. It covers nearly all the fundamental and practical aspects of stochastic hydrogeology, with emphasis on both the theoretical and practical aspects of the discipline. The language is simple, with many examples and case studies. The book is a great reference for scientists who are familiar with stochastic hydrogeology as well as for students and/or practitioners who may get informed about the discipline and learn how to implement the various tools available. The book is at the same time a very good introduction to the matter and a reference book for people who are already familiar with stochastic hydrogeology and want to keep updated with the most recent developments. This is the kind of book to keep on the desk.

Applied Stochastic Hydrogeology is easily the best book of this century in its field. Its intuitive and down-to-earth style makes even the most intricate aspects of stochastic analyses readily accessible to both graduate students and active researchers. The subjects the book covers range from stochastic site characterization and image reconstruction from sparse data to the concept of effective hydraulic parameters and probabilistic assessment of flow and transport in heterogeneous environments.

The study of sedimentary chemistry and its associated processes is becoming increasingly mathematical. There is a growing desire to gain a quantitative understand of the reasons for the natural chemical changes observed in sediments as they are buried. Past textbooks have not emphasized the steps necessary to develop transport-reaction (diagenetic) models themselves nor methods for their solution. This book attempts to present a detailed account of model formulation by explaining some useful solution techniques. The choice of material illustrates methods that are simple to understand and implement, yet powerful enough to attack even the most complicated diagenetic problems.
