Book Description
foreword by Hermann Haken
For the past twenty years Scott Kelso's research has focused on extending the physical concepts of self- organization and the mathematical tools of nonlinear dynamics to understand how human beings (and human brains) perceive, intend, learn, control, and coordinate complex behaviors. In this book Kelso proposes a new, general framework within which to connect brain, mind, and behavior.
Kelso's prescription for mental life breaks dramatically with the classical computational approach that is still the operative framework for many newer psychological and neurophysiological studies. His core thesis is that the creation and evolution of patterned behavior at all levels -- from neurons to mind -- is governed by the generic processes of self-organization. Both human brain and behavior are shown to exhibit features of pattern-forming dynamical systems, including multistability, abrupt phase transitions, crises, and intermittency.
Dynamic Patterns brings together different aspects of this approach to the study of human behavior, using simple experimental examples and illustrations to convey essential concepts, strategies, and methods, with a minimum of mathematics.
Kelso begins with a general account of dynamic pattern formation. He then takes up behavior, focusing initially on identifying pattern-forming instabilities in human sensorimotor coordination. Moving back and forth between theory and experiment, he establishes the notion that the same pattern-forming mechanisms apply regardless of the component parts involved (parts of the body, parts of the nervous system, parts of society) and the medium through which the parts are coupled. Finally, employing the latest techniques to observe spatiotemporal patterns of brain activity, Kelso shows that the human brain is fundamentally a pattern forming dynamical system, poised on the brink of instability. Self-organization thus underlies the cooperative action of neurons that produces human behavior in all its forms.

What language would It use to describe itself? Can something like mathematics, music, language or art, which It created contain the essence to even describe itself? Do modern models describe It any better than earlier models? In the context of the times does Non-linear Dynamics attractors describe (or for that matter predict) any better than C.Jung's archetypes? As far as that goes, since they both describe scales of magnitudes, why is their so much similarity between so many of each others concepts?(enantiomorphism vs. entrainment). One would think the biological scientific community would really embrace the concepts in this book for the simple reason to get them off the hook with one of their most difficult areas. If the human brain and thus cognitive and conscious processes are a product of limit cycles and memory simply a function of a hystersis curve the entire process becomes a function of Newtonian physics in support of biology's basic premise. Self-determination and teleological arguments become academic. Mind boggling. (I think the human brain is highly overrated). While Kelso's book Dynamic Patterns doesn't answer these questions either, it is still a pretty good book (overlooking not having any equations on the first page). Already in it's third printing it doesn't need me to critique it. For computer modelers: Mathcad contains the necessary (logistics) for scalar mapping and iterated bifurcations to provide the background to create the models used in the book. (including Lorenz models, Duffings, ODE solvers). Dynamics: Numerical Explorations, (Springer) with related program even goes one better. Matlab's signal processing toolbox, (creates any signal p.48, check out the Hofstader sequence relation to Kelso's basic signal), wavelets toolbox (creates Farey sequence, most converging fraction sequences paint this same picture). Because these equations can be set up as state-space models the same model can be used Matlab's system identification, control, and neural net toolboxes (use feedforward instead of feedback). For biologicals: Most applicable non-linear equations are much better handled by differential equations. While a unit circle torus may work for pictures it is does not give unique solutions and thus calculable answers. Assuming the time constant is the same in each differential equation and then cascading the solutions into each other to build matrices that can then be used to build the phase plots easily solves this. Check out Spikes, Decisions, and Actions (Wilson) probably the best as far as Matlab add-ons go (real action figures basic formulas and models can be modified to see the effect of gain i.e., use of amphetamines or inhibitors SSRI). Although Koch's (Biophysics of Computation provides good background in stochastic processes in the Markovian sense and Tri-diagonal matrices) startneuro Simulink from Methods in Neuronal Modeling (MIT Press) is a lot more fun!(Gabrianni and Koch) In the same book is Rinzel and Ermentrout's original work on Oscillations. And last but not least the internet address for all these and the classic Neuron model by Hines is included.

Good but dated.......2006-03-15
This is an interesting book, a compilation of papers presented in 1993, and, as a result, feels somewhat dated in 2006. The title gives one the sense that it will tackle the very difficult questions of mind and brain from the vantage point of complex adaptive systems. But many of the papers only approach that idea tangentially. The Santa Fe Institute is a terrific place, doing fascinating work, but this book did not live up to my expectations.
Book Description
"This is a wonderful book that brings together in one place the modern view of computation as found in nature. It is well written and has something for everyone from the undergraduate to the advanced researcher." -- Terrence J. Sejnowski, Howard Hughes Medical Institute at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, California It is now clear that the brain is unlikely to be understood without recourse to computational theories. The theme of An Introduction to Natural Computation is that ideas from diverse areas such as neuroscience, information theory, and optimization theory have recently been extended in ways that make them useful for describing the brain's programs. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the computational material that forms the underpinnings of the currently evolving set of brain models. It stresses the broad spectrum of learning models--ranging from neural network learning through reinforcement learning to genetic learning--and situates the various models in their appropriate neural context. To write about models of the brain before the brain is fully understood is a delicate matter. Very detailed models of the neural circuitry risk losing track of the task the brain is trying to solve. At the other extreme, models that represent cognitive constructs can be so abstract that they lose all relationship to neurobiology. An Introduction to Natural Computation takes the middle ground and stresses the computational task while staying near the neurobiology. The material is accessible to advanced undergraduates as well as beginning graduate students.

Very informative - but you'll need an icepack for your head.......2002-04-16
Fifteen years ago I did research in this area and had just completed a math degree. I thought it would be interesting to get back up to speed.
I found the book fascinating, tremendous work has been done in this field and this is a good broad treatment of it. For anyone who is into computer science but has never studied the brain it will be a tremendous eye opener.
But boy, was it hard work. I found I had to read & re-read sections just to understand some of the math involved. In fairness the book does cover everything you need but if you have never done college level math, or you have forgotten most of it, then don't tackle this book when you are tired!
From Caltech.......2000-10-25
This book is one of the two main books used in Caltech's Neural Computation class (the other is Introduction to the Theory of Neural Computation by Hertz, Krogh, and Palmer). This book covers a wider spectrum of learning models than most books, including Hertz, et al. It is still fairly mathematically rigorous, although not as much as Hertz, et al. It is ideal for somebody who wants a fairly mathematically rigorous description of the subject, but also wants something more comprehensive than Herts, et al.

award-winning author.......2000-08-07
Wolman won a medal in 2000 from the American Geophysical Union, and in the citation they said, "although written 35 years ago, it remains one of the most cited works in geopmorphology and was recently republished by Dover, not as a historical artifact but as required reading for the newest generation of fluvial geomorphologists. Brimming with clarity and literacy... a good bedtime read." (well... at least for those who want to understand stream morphology.)
The classic of stream geomorphology.......1999-01-28
This book forms one of the foundations of the field of stream geomorphology from one of the founding fathers. I would recommend it as the basic text for someone serious about learning about fluvial geomorphology. Considerable work has been added to the field since Dr. Leopold's book was first published in 1964 but this forms a very good synthesis of a complex subject. As a civil engineer/geomorphologist, I have referred to this book many times over the past 25 years since I was one of his students at Berkeley. A great value in paperback.
Book Description
The Geology of Fluvial Deposits represents the first published synthesis of research on the sedimentary geology of fluvial deposits. It sets out in detail the methods for the field and subsurface study of these sediments, and provides geologists with detailed descriptions of the building blocks of fluvial stratigraphic units, from lithofacies through architectural elements and depositional systems to large-scale stratigraphic sequences and basin-fill complexes. The book contains a new classification of oil and gas fields in fluvial reservoirs, with descriptions of selected case examples. Profusely illustrated and with an extensive reference to the recent literature this textbook will be welcomed by the student and professional alike.

Misleading publication information.......2007-04-10
This is a book that is being promoted as a first edition, even though the first edition came out in 1996. If this is a second edition with significant updates and additions, then that should be made clear in the book description.
Excellent book.......2001-04-19
"The Geology of Fluvial Deposits.." is an outstanding book on this matter. Mr. Miall, as usual, has got to achieve the main and crucial points regarding fluvial environment. This book is the best reference on fluvial sedimentation I have ever read.

Book Description
Developments in the modelling of sediment transport in rivers and the interactions with the river-bed have been remarkable over the last two decades. This progress has increased the understanding of the nature of turbulence, and the ability to replicate mathematically simple flow-particle interactions which can be observed experimentally. In addition, quite elegant models of stratigraphic complexes have evolved because of the growing computational power available to scientists. As always, additional knowledge has raised even more intriguing questions and the quest for explanation of phenomena has led to increased specialisation. Therefore, there are few fluid dynamicists or sedimentologists who can successfully span the two disciplines. The intention of this book is to assist various specialists on keeping abreast of current developments in related areas. The book initially focuses on hydrodynamics of turbulent flow, followed by basic two and three-dimensional flow through straight and curved channels and the flow over bed topography. This is then followed by a consideration of initial motion, sediment transport and particle sorting. The potential for modelling fluidsediment interactions is provided at the end of the first section. Linking chapters then follow, considering the preservation potential of fluvial bedforms in the stratigraphic record and the basic variety of channel morphology recognised in sedimentary studies. Subsequent chapters consider reconstructing hydraulic process and fluvial morphology from stratigraphy; the influence of bedform and depositional controls on packing of economically important sedimentary rocks; and recent advances in modelling subsurface fluvial stratigraphy. A final chapter provides a brief view of future perspectives. The objective of this volume is to review recent advances made by geologists and hydrodynamicists in an accessible manner and to promote an increased and fruitful dialogue between sedimentary geologists, geomorphologists and hydrodynamicists.

One of the Best Sediment Compilations Available.......2007-05-31
After the fourth time I chased a promising reference into the library and emerged with this book I knew it was something special. Carling and Dawson put together a very good compilation that remains compelling a decade later. Best was the appropriate (must...resist...obvious...pun) choice to review the flurry of recent developments in bedform mechanics. His 60 page overview is itself worth checking this book out as it is accessible, comprehensive and up to date. Whiting's chapter on mixing was a welcome surprise as he detailed the wide range of processes responsible for bed sorting unlike anything otherwise compiled. Kelsey's overview of modeling is very different the one I would write as it is sweeping in scope and broad in its review of approaches. But it is generally interesting and provides the best synthesis of active layer approaches I found when recently doing some work on the topic. Each of the other bed mechanics papers are worthwhile. Coming from the geologic perspective the text also includes several stratigraphy papers that are outside of my interest or ability to evaluate. However, if the reach the level of applicability of the bed mechanics paper they are highly recommended.

Book Description
This volume consists of twenty chapters addressing different aspects of the theme of fluvial processes and environmental change. The overall coverage is broad; scientifically, (from modelling to alluvial dating), geographically (from arid zone flash-flooding to glacial meltwaters) and in time (from contemporary process studies to the Quaternary). The introductory chapter sets the context, which is an attempt to show how studies of fluvial processes can help us in understanding and therefore predicting the impact of environmental change on our rivers, riverine resources and landscapes. Environmental change includes both climatic factors, however caused, and human impacts on river basins. The differentiation of these two factors is discussed in several chapters whilst others take a more holistic approach. Both climatic and human factors have, and will remain, to act together and so their interactions need to be understood. Fluvial Processes and Environmental Change is divided into five sections, commencing with the slope-catchment scale and proceeding to studies of channel response, then floodplain processes and floodplain response and finally two studies from glacierised basins. The volume originated as a two-day session of the British Geomorphological Research Group and contributors from Europe, the USA and Australia were included in order to provide a wide perspective on the topic. This book will be a valuable reference for postgraduates and researchers in fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, Quaternary science, geology and environmental science.

Book Description
Fundamentals of Fluvial Geomorphology provides an accessible introduction to the study of river landforms and the processes that shape them. Rivers are significant geomorphological agents, they show an amazing diversity of form and behaviour and transfer water and sediment from the land surface to the oceans. This book examines how river systems respond to environmental change and why this understanding is needed for successful river management. Highly dynamic in nature, river channels adjust and evolve over timescales that range from hours to tens of thousands of years or more and are found in a wide range of environments.
The book provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in river channel management, clearly illustrating why an understanding of fluvial geomorphology is vital in channel preservation, environmentally sensitive design, and the restoration of degraded river channels.
Fundamentals of Fluvial Geomorphology is an indispensable text for undergraduate students. It provides straightforward explanations for important concepts and mathematical formulae, backed up with conceptual diagrams and appropriate examples from around the world to show what they actually mean and why they are important. A colour plate section also shows spectacular examples of fluvial diversity.
