    Book Description

With rich detail and vibrancy, internationally recognized experts across several fields address the evolution and phylogenetic relationships of the Arthropoda . They offer innovative ideas to reevaluate the phylogeny of major arthropod groups, discuss the evolution of arthropod eyes in a phylogenetic context, present a comprehensive overview of appendage loss and regeneration, and address the most recent molecular phylogenetic data, including nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences. They also discuss relationships between insects and crustaceans, offer diverse approaches to evaluate fossil evidence, and evaluate competing hypotheses for arthropod placement in the animal kingdom. "…contributes important new insights into the rapidly changing field of evolutionary relationship within the arthropods, revealing a process in which the traditional view of phylogenetic relationships is being reevaluated and revolutionized. …Fred Schram, as well as the many researchers honouring him with this volume, have markedly advanced our present understanding of arthropod phylogeny, while also providing a template for testing of arthropod relationships as the field advances in years to come." -Christoph D. Schubart, Universität Regensburg and Carsten H. G. Müller, Institut für Biowissenschaften, Universität Rostock, Germany, Systematic Biology, Vol. 55 "It is a highly appropriate collection of thought-provoking and innovative papers…which should do Fred Schram proud. …for anyone who is interested in current views on arthropods and/or crustacean relationships, and who does not shy away from interpretations that deviate strongly from the general views, this is a must-have volume." -Contributions to Zoology "Reassuringly, perhaps, like any other multiauthored volume dealing with aspects of arthropod phylogeny, this one includes plenty that is controversial. …This book…will serve as a marker in the development of ideas of crustacean and arthropod relationships." -Derek E.G. Briggs, Department of Geology and Geophysics, Yale University, The Palaeontology Newsletter, Vol. 61

      Book Description

The arthropods contain more species than any other animal group, but the evolutionary pathways which led to their current diversity are still an issue of controversy. Arthropod Relationships provides an overview of our current understanding, responding to the new data arising from sequencing DNA, the discovery of new Cambrian fossils as direct evidence of early arthropod history, and developmental genetics. These new areas of research have stimulated a reconsideration of classical morphology and embryology. Arthropod Relationships is the first synthesis of the current debate to emerge: not since the volume edited by Gupta was published in 1979 has the arthropod phylogeny debate been, considered in this depth and breadth. Leaders in the various branches of arthropod biology have contributed to this volume. Chapters focus progressively from the general issues to the specific problems involving particular groups, and thence to a consideration of embryology and genetics. This wide range of disciplines is drawn on to approach an understanding of arthropod relationships, and to provide the most timely account of arthropod phylogeny. This book should be read by evolutionary biologists, palaeontologists, developmental geneticists and invertebrate zoologists. It will have a special interest for post-graduate students working in these fields.

            Book Description

Host immune responses to ectoparasitic arthropods are critical elements in determining the nature of animal host-arthropod relationships, including transmission of vector-borne pathogens. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive analysis for both the student and specialist in the emerging field of "immunoentomology". Our fundamental understanding of this topic has increased dramatically in recent years. Chapters prepared by specialists from the USA, UK, and Australia provide comprehensive reviews of key subjects. The book concludes with a consideration of the application of fundamental knowledge about the immunology of the host-arthropod interface to the development of anti-arthropod vaccines. It is aimed particularly at medical and veterinary entomologists and acarologists, as well as immunologists.

Couldn't put it down. Liked the logical progression and the variety of information. I didn't know how scattered the bits of continents are! Fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best geology book for lay persons.......2004-09-30

Ron Redfern is a superb writer and peerless photo editor. This book is surely the capstone of his career to date.

Although the subject matter examined is broad and complicated, the book is very well organized and seamlessly drafted. With the exception of a few typographical errors, the information presented is highly accurate. The genius of the work lies in the fact that, despite having to examine complex problems in geology, the author so deftly explains these matters that the reader is never left confused or at a loss.

As to the magnificent color photographs, both large and small, each follows the text closely, and each is accomapnied by an explanatory, locational note. The beauty of many of the pictures is breathtaking. Additionally, accompanying diagrams are thoughtful and informative.

Redfern's masterpiece covers the history and nature of the North American tectonic plate. It is a virtual textbook of plate tectonics. Discussion is divided into several chapters covering the origin of the plate, its relation to other plates, especially the Baltic and African plates, and then into sections describing each part of the plate. Chapters include as subjects such varied areas as the Mississippi delta, the Canadian Shield, the Colorado Plateau, and the Appalachians. You will be endlessly fascinated by the marvelous photos and detailed text, and it seems something new is learned upon each rereading of the book

The book is small coffee-table in size, and would form a proud display in anyone's home. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for lay persons interested in geology, and the book is highly useful for professional and academics in the field of geology, as well. If you want to enjoy reading and learning about the forces that make our marvelous planet operate, this is the book to get. Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars Classic book on plate tectonics........1998-10-07

This is a fabulous book describing how the continents were formed. I am a salesperson with no scientific background and I loved Ron Redfern's descriptions, pictures and especially graphics and timelines. I understood it. Wonderful. I wish he had written another.

                        Book Description

An Architecture of Independence: The Making of Modern South Asia presents the work of four pioneering modern architects from the Indian subcontinent—Charles Correa, Balkrishna Doshi, and Achyut Kanvinde of India, and Muzharul Islam of Bangladesh. An introduction by Kenneth Frampton and essays by the editors situate the work of these architects within the intellectual and aesthetic traditions of the subcontinent.?
Also included are statements by the architects and documentation of 27 projects, chosen to give a sense of the strategies they have developed for undertakings as diverse as private houses, settlements, major institutional buildings, and even a gallery devoted to the work of one artist. Each of the four has also played a major role in creating the contemporary architectural culture of South Asia, through teaching and influence on important government and cultural policies. Each represents a model of the architect as engaged artist, intellectual, and citizen.

                          Book Description

This third volume of Andre Wink's acclaimed and pioneering Al-Hind:The Making of the Indo-Islamic World takes the reader from the late Mongol invasions to the end of the medieval period and the beginnings of early modern times in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century. It breaks new ground by focusing attention on the role of geography, and more specifically on the interplay of nomadic, settled and maritime societies. In doing so, it presents a picture of the world of India and the Indian Ocean on the eve of the Portuguese discovery of the searoute: a world without stable parameters, of pervasive geophysical change, inchoate and instable urbanism, highly volatile and itinerant elites of nomadic origin, far-flung merchant diasporas, and a famine- and disease-prone peasantry whose life was a gamble on the monsoon.

Arriving as the country commemorates the expedition's bicentennial, Across the Continent is not an exercise in demythologizing; rather, it is an examination of the explorers' world and the complicated ways in which it relates to our own. The essays collected here look at the global geopolitics that provided the context for the expedition -- and at the interest in science, shared by Jefferson, that not only grew from the expedition but, to an extent, justified its undertaking. Finally, the discussion considers the various legacies of the expedition, in particular its impact on Native Americans, and the current struggle over who will control the narrative of the expansion of the American Empire.

                            Book Description

As the birthplace of the human race, Africa possesses a cultural history of unparalleled length. This magnificent publication reflects that vast time span: the objects included range from the oldest known human artifact (1.6 million BC) to pieces made within living memory. In word and image the book celebrates the extraordinary variety of African art and the consummate skill of its creators.

4 out of 5 stars Final Grade: 81%.......2007-03-20

a fair collection of colour and black and white photos of African art from all over the continent. Of all the areas, East Africa (excluding the Horn of Africa) is given the least attention. I think they could have also expanded on Ethiopian art.
Another problem is the lack of showing contemporary African art (it assumes that new Euro-influenced art is no longer African. This is of course ridiculous since contemporary Euro art since the late 19th century has been heavily African influence, yet remains European art)

Also, the book does not include African architectural art. Though I only gave it a B-minus, if there was a sliding scale I'd have to give it an A-minus due to the lack of good art books regarding Africa.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of a Continent.......2006-03-10

Very informmative text, very easy to read, and understand. With pictures, and text that visually and verbably discribe in detail each object listed. Great number of art objects not available to view without the photographs in this book I am 100% satisfied with this book and will use it as a reference, on an ongoing basis. A must for the collector of African Art.

4 out of 5 stars African Art, a true collectors edition........1998-10-09

One of the most complete general works on African Art and well worth purchasing for detailed information on the variation in art form, tribe, country and art style in Africa. Almost full tribal location information and regionalised art details makes this book a must for the serious collector and student on the subject. From early Egyptian to more recent times, it is a book you have to read several times to understand that no one can ever know the true depth and complexity within the African Art world. A good all round reference book on a much missunderstood and underated art form.

As a mark of esteem and affection for Irfan Habib, a prominent intellectual in the field of Indian history, scholars in India and abroad have come together to offer him this volume. The essays reflect the range of Irfan Habib's interests and contributions in great measure. It includes essays by not only historians, but political scientists and economists, not only those specializing in the medieval period but also theorists of modern India, theorists of culture and socialist systems.
