Crustacea and Arthropod Relationships (Crustacean Issues)
Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849334985 |
Book Description
With rich detail and vibrancy, internationally recognized experts across several fields address the evolution and phylogenetic relationships of the Arthropoda . They offer innovative ideas to reevaluate the phylogeny of major arthropod groups, discuss the evolution of arthropod eyes in a phylogenetic context, present a comprehensive overview of appendage loss and regeneration, and address the most recent molecular phylogenetic data, including nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences. They also discuss relationships between insects and crustaceans, offer diverse approaches to evaluate fossil evidence, and evaluate competing hypotheses for arthropod placement in the animal kingdom. " contributes important new insights into the rapidly changing field of evolutionary relationship within the arthropods, revealing a process in which the traditional view of phylogenetic relationships is being reevaluated and revolutionized. Fred Schram, as well as the many researchers honouring him with this volume, have markedly advanced our present understanding of arthropod phylogeny, while also providing a template for testing of arthropod relationships as the field advances in years to come." -Christoph D. Schubart, Universität Regensburg and Carsten H. G. Müller, Institut für Biowissenschaften, Universität Rostock, Germany, Systematic Biology, Vol. 55 "It is a highly appropriate collection of thought-provoking and innovative papers which should do Fred Schram proud. for anyone who is interested in current views on arthropods and/or crustacean relationships, and who does not shy away from interpretations that deviate strongly from the general views, this is a must-have volume." -Contributions to Zoology "Reassuringly, perhaps, like any other multiauthored volume dealing with aspects of arthropod phylogeny, this one includes plenty that is controversial. This book will serve as a marker in the development of ideas of crustacean and arthropod relationships." -Derek E.G. Briggs, Department of Geology and Geophysics, Yale University, The Palaeontology Newsletter, Vol. 61

Arthropod Relationships (The Systematics Association Special Volume Series)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0412754207 |
Book Description
The arthropods contain more species than any other animal group, but the evolutionary pathways which led to their current diversity are still an issue of controversy. Arthropod Relationships provides an overview of our current understanding, responding to the new data arising from sequencing DNA, the discovery of new Cambrian fossils as direct evidence of early arthropod history, and developmental genetics. These new areas of research have stimulated a reconsideration of classical morphology and embryology. Arthropod Relationships is the first synthesis of the current debate to emerge: not since the volume edited by Gupta was published in 1979 has the arthropod phylogeny debate been, considered in this depth and breadth. Leaders in the various branches of arthropod biology have contributed to this volume. Chapters focus progressively from the general issues to the specific problems involving particular groups, and thence to a consideration of embryology and genetics. This wide range of disciplines is drawn on to approach an understanding of arthropod relationships, and to provide the most timely account of arthropod phylogeny. This book should be read by evolutionary biologists, palaeontologists, developmental geneticists and invertebrate zoologists. It will have a special interest for post-graduate students working in these fields.

The Immunology of Host-Ectoparasitic Arthropod Relationships
Manufacturer: CABI ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0851991254 |
Book Description
Host immune responses to ectoparasitic arthropods are critical elements in determining the nature of animal host-arthropod relationships, including transmission of vector-borne pathogens. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive analysis for both the student and specialist in the emerging field of "immunoentomology". Our fundamental understanding of this topic has increased dramatically in recent years. Chapters prepared by specialists from the USA, UK, and Australia provide comprehensive reviews of key subjects. The book concludes with a consideration of the application of fundamental knowledge about the immunology of the host-arthropod interface to the development of anti-arthropod vaccines. It is aimed particularly at medical and veterinary entomologists and acarologists, as well as immunologists.

Andre Wink Manufacturer: Brill Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 9004135618 |
Book Description
This third volume of Andre Wink's acclaimed and pioneering Al-Hind:The Making of the Indo-Islamic World takes the reader from the late Mongol invasions to the end of the medieval period and the beginnings of early modern times in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century. It breaks new ground by focusing attention on the role of geography, and more specifically on the interplay of nomadic, settled and maritime societies. In doing so, it presents a picture of the world of India and the Indian Ocean on the eve of the Portuguese discovery of the searoute: a world without stable parameters, of pervasive geophysical change, inchoate and instable urbanism, highly volatile and itinerant elites of nomadic origin, far-flung merchant diasporas, and a famine- and disease-prone peasantry whose life was a gamble on the monsoon.

Across the Continent: Jefferson, Lewis And Clark, And the Making of America
Manufacturer: University of Virginia Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0813925959 |
Book Description
An obscure undertaking in its own time, the Lewis and Clark expedition has grown in the American imagination, acquiring an almost mythic stature. Arriving as the country commemorates the expedition's bicentennial, Across the Continent is not an exercise in demythologizing; rather, it is an examination of the explorers' world and the complicated ways in which it relates to our own. The essays collected here look at the global geopolitics that provided the context for the expedition -- and at the interest in science, shared by Jefferson, that not only grew from the expedition but, to an extent, justified its undertaking. Finally, the discussion considers the various legacies of the expedition, in particular its impact on Native Americans, and the current struggle over who will control the narrative of the expansion of the American Empire.
