              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Useful, if overwhelming, reference.......2005-10-22

As a non-biologist, I have found this vast, square, heavy volume helpful in clarifying many terms encountered in reading in diverse areas related to biology. It is abundantly cross-indexed, which enables the user to explore connections among terms and concepts. It is an excellent supplement for those with an interest in the field. It will not answer all the questions, but it helps.

5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of molecular biology the best for me.......1998-09-29

As a molecular biology student I find this book a very good quick reference. It outlines all the major terms and explains them very well. As far as doing reports and assignments is concerned, for me this has got to be the most valuable starting point. It contains excellent diagrams which are easy to understand and follow. I would recommend this even to a non biologist. Naz Bradford

                  "This series is a classic..."
—Molecular Medicine Today/Trends in Molecular Medicine

The second edition of this highly acclaimed, sixteen-volume Encyclopedia now contains 150 new articles and extended coverage of cell biology. It is thus the most comprehensive and most detailed treatment of molecular biology, cell biology and molecular medicine available today -- designed in collaboration with a founding board of 10 Nobel laureates.

As such, the Encyclopedia provides a single-source library of the molecular basis of life, with a focus on molecular medicine, discussing in detail the latest advances of the post-genomic era.

Each of the approximately 425 articles is written as a self-contained treatment, beginning with an outline and a key word section plus definitions. Peer-reviewed, they are written in a review-like style, complemented by an extensive bipartite bibliography of reviews and books as well as primary papers. A glossary of basic terms completes each volume and defines the most commonly used terms in molecular biology. Together with the introductory illustrations found in each volume, the articles are comprehensible for readers at every level without resorting to a dictionary, textbook, or other reference.

                  Praise for the first edition:
"...an authoritative reference source of the highest quality. ... It is extremely well written and well illustrated..."
—American Reference Books Annual (Library & Information Science Annual)

"This series can be recommended without hesitation to a broad readership including students and qualified researchers...articles...set-up facilitates easy reading and rapid understanding...overwhelming amount of valuable data."
                  —Molecular Biology Reports

"...highly valuable and recommendable both for libraries and for laboratory use."

                      Book Description

The rise in the production and use of polymers as everyday materials has for the most part been due to advances in polymers synthesis allowing the manufacture of huge range of materials suitable for many different applications. The current and potential applications of ion-containing polymers or ionomers are many and varied. One of the most well-established of these is the use of perfluorinated ionomers as members in chlor-alkali cells. Ionic interactions may also be used to modify the properties of thermoplastics, as in the case of the well-known Surlyn materials which are widely used in packaging applications. Other current applications of ionomers include their use as thermoplastic elastomers blend compatibilizers and fluid additives such as dispersants.
For every existing application, there are a great many potential applications that have yet to be exploited and with the tremendous explosion in ionomer research and applications, the time has arrived for a concise and authoritative account of the field.
This book written by a team of industrial and academic researchers, is directed at polymer scientists and chemical engineers.

From the author: An investigation was performed into the effect of processing on microstructural orientation in the perfluorinated ionomer membrane, Nafion[R] (registered trademark of E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company). The aim of the study was to explore methods by which such orientation, determined from the azimuthal width of the small-angle X-ray "cluster" peak, could be reduced or eliminated. The processing consisted of biaxial deformation, both of the commercial membrane and the precursor resin, as well as high-temperature treatment of the Nafion membrane. It was found that membranes produced by film blowing were less oriented than commercial membranes produced by flat-film extrusion of the precursor. Biaxial drawing of commercial membranes at temperatures above the glass-transition temperature of the fluorocarbon matrix ([T.sub.g,m]) resulted in a reduction in orientation. However, even the most isotropic of these samples were significantly more oriented than membranes made by film blowing. Orientation was eliminated from commercial membranes by annealing at temperatures above [T.sub.g,m] for periods in excess of 24 h. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 46:228-234, 2006.
