Book Description
Cecie Starr and Ralph Taggart are among the most successful authors in introductory, biological science instruction because of their lively approach, engaging writing style, current coverage of the breadth of biology's topics, and their unique illustrations. In this Tenth Edition of Biology: The Unity and Diversity of Life, the authors use the important connections among molecular structure, biological function, and evolution to encourage student understanding instead of memorization. For example, Chapter 1 includes a preview of life's unity and diversity with an evolutionary perspective. Similar sections in Chapters 3, 5, and 6, on the structure and function of enzymes and other molecules, prepare students for chapters on cell structure and metabolism, genetics, evolution, anatomy, and physiology. This background prepares students to understand the power of comparative molecular studies in clarifying evolutionary relationships. Connections essays (28 in all) focus on this new integration of molecular structure, function, and evolution. The first essay (1.4) answers an important question: How can life display both unity and diversity? It shows how the theory of evolution by natural selection connects the two. Other essays consider evolutionary interplays between infectious agents and their hosts; cloning and genetically engineered mammals, the evolution of life over the past 3.8 billion years, and archaeopteryx and the ancestry of whales (to show that interpreting the past scientifically requires an intellectual shift). Improvements in the media package meet the high standards instructors have come to expect. There is a new version of the complimentary Interactive Concepts in Biology Student CD-ROM with nearly 800 interactions to clarify and reinforce key concepts. For instructors, there is a Multimedia Manager with art and graphics from the text already in PowerPoint format, as well as CNN Today video clips (294 in all), now available digitally.Customer Reviews:

Biology: The Unity and Diversity of Life.......2003-05-29
Very often the point of a sentence is lost in the verbiage. Some basic explanations are repeated several times, whilst many more important things are left unexplained.
Many of the pictures appear to have been chosen because they are 'cool' rather than relevant to the text and just sidetrack the reader.
Some of the examples are incredibly stupid. One, at p. 18, under the heading, "Critical Thinking", 2., gives the story of a turkey that learned to equate footsteps with the provision of food. One one day the footsteps led to the turkey having its head chopped off. The text explains that the turkey learned the hard way. In fact the turkey learned nothing, as by then it was dead.
The glossary is inadequate and misses out too many new and important terms.
The answers given to the quizzes do not always agree with the text, for example, Chapter 2 Self Quiz Question 1 asks what charge is carried by an electron. The correct answer, as given at page 24, is "Negative," but the answer list in Appendix III gives it incorrectly as "Positive." Many instructors lift questions and answers from the book for on-line exams. Does the student then give the incorrect answer as per Appendix III to get the point or the correct answer, knowing that it will very likely be graded as "wrong"? Another example is in the quiz to Chapter 5, question 2.
Looking at the list of credits, it lookas if too many people have had a hand in the book and as a result it has been spoilt.
I would not recommend this book.

Acoustic Sensing Techniques for the Shallow Water Environment: Inversion Methods and Experiments
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402043724 |
Book Description
Acoustic remote sensing of the ocean environment has seen a remarkable progress in the last ten–fifteen year as a result of an increasing understanding of the experimental techniques and procedures and of the subtleties of the interaction of sound with complex physical and biological processes. This is particularly true in the shallow water environment, where acoustic methods have the potential to allow for a fast and accurate characterization and assessment of the environment. To review the state of the art and the research progress in the field, a workshop was held in the island of Ischia, Italy, in June 2004. Special emphasis has been placed on the experimental applications, to realistically assess their potential and capabilities of the methods proposed. This volume, based on the workshop presentations, include a range of diverse and innovative applications, as well as comparisons in the field among competing approaches and review papers.
The invited contributions range from ocean acoustic tomography to estimation of the seabed and subbottom properties, to marine biology; ambient noise in the ocean is increasingly being investigated as a replacement for traditional acoustic source, to make acoustic inversion even less invasive and more environmentally friendly as a methodology to probe the ocean.
Audience: This book is primarily intended for physicists and engineers working in underwater acoustics and oceanic engineering. It will also be of interest to marine biologists, geophysicists and oceanographers as potential users of the methodologies and techniques described in the book contributions.

Comparison of 2D and 3D Predictions of the FOR3D Acoustic Propagation Model in Shallow Water Flat Bathymetry Environments
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 142350979X |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL RESEARCH LAB STENNIS SPACE CENTER MS report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A088304. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In this study using the FOR3D Acoustic Model, little difference was found between the 2D and the 3D computational modes. The study was limited to shallow water flat bathymetry (along the slope) using sound velocity gradients normally associated with typical shelf/slope frontal environments as well as greatly inflated gradients. Several comparisons were made for specific cases (in 2D and 3D modes) having exact solutions, which by analogy provide clear demonstration of why substantial agreement was found for the two different modes.

Examination of Time-Reversal Acoustic Applications to Shallow Water Active Sonar Systems

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A478873. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The ability to employ effectively an active sonar system in the littoral regions is of great interest to the United States Navy. Time-varying multipath propagation introduces significant problems that must be overcome in the employment of shallow water active sonar. The phenomenon of time-reversal acoustics (TRA) has provided hope for a solution to this problem by undoing much of the multipath spreading without the need to have knowledge of the environment in these littoral regions. When an active sonar return is time-reversed (phase- conjugated in the frequency domain) and retransmitted, this second signal focuses in time and space back at the original source location. This thesis investigates the phenomenon of TRA as it applies to an idealized shallow water environment. Numerical modeling was performed for a variety of source and target apertures and ranges. Results demonstrate a significant enhancement in received active sonar signal strength due to the TRA acoustic field focusing effect. Furthermore, the signal strength enhancement remains significant even when the source to target range changes between active sonar transmissions. The results presented in this thesis demonstrate that the use of TRA may provide substantial signal to noise ratio improvements over current active sonar systems. Further modeling and real world experiments could ultimate lead to the development of a practical active TRA sonar system.

Examination of Time-Reversal Acoustics in Shallow Water and Applications to Underwater Communications
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423543009 |
The Storming Media report number is A224863. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Time-varying multipath propagation is considered the most important difficulty in shallow underwater acoustic (UWA) communications. To compensate for the time variability of the channel, the receiver must use an adaptive algorithm for adjusting its parameters. At high symbol rates, intersymbol interference caused by multipath propagation requires large adaptive filters, increasing the computational complexity at the receiver end. This thesis presents a time-reversal acoustic technique (implemented with a phase-conjugated array of PCA) that generates a spatio-temporal focus of acoustic energy at the receiver location which reduces distortions introduced by channel propagation (including multipath), allowing the use of low-complexity receivers. Numerical analysis shows that for different PCA geometries (element spacing and aperture sizes), the PCA focus footprint does not appear to significantly change its dimensions. Furthermore, the aperture size plays a more significant role than the number of array elements in a PC array design. Specific examples of novel UWA communication systems utilizing time-reversal focusing are introduced. Current simulation results suggest the potential for high data transfer rates compared to existing noncoherent UWA communication systems.

Experimental Acoustic Inversion Methods for Exploration of the Shallow Water Environment
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792363051 |
Book Description
In recent years, research on acoustic remote sensing of the ocean has evolved considerably, especially in studying complex physical and biological processes in shallow water environments. To review the state of the art, an international workshop was held at Carvoeiro, Portugal, in March 1999, bringing together leading international researchers in the field. In contrast to much of the recent theoretical work, emphasis was placed on the experimental validation of the techniques. This volume, based on presentations at this workshop, summarizes a range of diverse and innovative applications. The invited contributions explore the use of acoustics to measure bottom properties and morphology, as well as to probe buried objects within the sediment. Within the water column, sound is applied to imaging of oceanographic features such as currents and tides or monitoring of marine life. Another key theme is the use of sound to solve geometric inverse problems for precise tracking of undersea vehicles. Audience: This volume should be useful both to the novice seeking an introduction to the field and to advanced researchers interested in the latest developments in acoustic sensing of the ocean environment. The workshop was sponsored by the Fundação para a Ciêcia e a Tecnologia (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology).

Model-Data Comparison of Shallow Water Acoustic Reverberation in the East China Sea
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423500164 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon and assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows. In this thesis, the Monterey-Miami Parabolic Equation (MMPE) model is used to generate predictions from numerical analysis of the reverberation loss structure and peak vertical correlation structure generated by the water/bottom interface, the bottom/sub-bottom interface, and the bottom volume for a shallow water environment. These predictions are then compared to the peak vertical correlation analysis of recorded data collected in an actual shallow water environment similar to the modeled environment. This experimental data was recorded by a 32-element vertical line array (VLA) that recorded the reverberant return generated by charges detonated over the continental shelf in the East China Sea as part of ASIAEX. A comparison is made between predictions and recorded data by analyzing trends in peak vertical correlation with decreasing bandwidth. The influences of interface roughness, bottom volume perturbations, and water volume turbulence on peak vertical correlation is also determined.

Shallow Water Acoustic Variability and Influences on Autocorrelation Matching Localization Algorithms
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423554728 |
The Storming Media report number is A458953. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In this work, several algorithms based on higher-order moment (autocorrelation) matching of single hydrophone element data have been developed and tested on real transient data sets. Of particular interest is the success and robustness of the Frequency-Domain Autocorrelation Matching (FACM) algorithms in the presence of environmental mismatch, signal mismatch, and noise, for different signals in an unknown environment. Recently acquired data was analyzed for signal variability in terms of spatial coherence of phones, beams, and modal structure. The ability to localize using these higher-order moment matching algorithms was compared to the spatial structure of the signal, the placement of the receiving elements, and the signal variability. This work suggests that the FACM algorithms are strongly dependent on the source-receiver relative positions, and on the uniqueness of the signal vertical structure. It is also shown that their performance increases with the number of multipath arrivals and, therefore, with the range. More importantly, the localization results obtained with raw linear frequency modulated (LFM) signals seemed to be as useful as the ones obtained from matched-filtered data.
