      Book Description

Optimal Shape Design is concerned with the optimization of some performance criterion dependent (besides the constraints of the problem) on the "shape" of some region. The main topics covered are: the optimal design of a geometrical object, for instance a wing, moving in a fluid; the optimal shape of a region (a harbor), given suitable constraints on the size of the entrance to the harbor, subject to incoming waves; the optimal design of some electrical device subject to constraints on the performance. The aim is to show that Optimal Shape Design, besides its interesting industrial applications, possesses nontrivial mathematical aspects. The main theoretical tools developed here are the homogenization method and domain variations in PDE. The style is mathematically rigorous, but specifically oriented towards applications, and it is intended for both pure and applied mathematicians. The reader is required to know classical PDE theory and basic functional analysis.

        Book Description

Monte Carlo methods form an experimental branch of mathematics that employs simulations driven by random number generators. These methods are often used when others fail, since they are much less sensitive to the "curse of dimensionality", which plagues deterministic methods in problems with a large number of variables. Monte Carlo methods are used in many fields: mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, finance, computer science, and biology, for instance.

This book is an introduction to Monte Carlo methods for anyone who would like to use these methods to study various kinds of mathematical models that arise in diverse areas of application. The book is based on lectures in a graduate course given by the author. It examines theoretical properties of Monte Carlo methods as well as practical issues concerning their computer implementation and statistical analysis. The only formal prerequisite is an undergraduate course in probability.

The book is intended to be accessible to students from a wide range of scientific backgrounds. Rather than being a detailed treatise, it covers the key topics of Monte Carlo methods to the depth necessary for a researcher to design, implement, and analyze a full Monte Carlo study of a mathematical or scientific problem. The ideas are illustrated with diverse running examples. There are exercises sprinkled throughout the text. The topics covered include computer generation of random variables, techniques and examples for variance reduction of Monte Carlo estimates, Markov chain Monte Carlo, and statistical analysis of Monte Carlo output.

        Book Description

The book presents innovative methods for the solution of multibody descriptor models. It emphasizes the interdependence of modeling and numerical solution of the arising system of differential-algebraic equations (DAE). Here, it is shown that modifications of non-stiff ODE-solvers are very effective for a large class of multibody systems. In particular, implicit methods are found to dovetail optimally with the linearly implicit structure of the model equations, allowing an inverse dynamics approach for their solution. Furthermore, the book stresses the importance of software development in scientific computing and thus presents a complete example of an interdisciplinary problem solution for an important field of application from technical mechanics.

While the book contained an enormous amount of useful information and is elagantly written, it missed the mark on providing useful, "here's how you do it..", numerical methods and algorithms for MBS as the title implies. Since the book originated from lecture notes, it was assumed there would be a few simple examples of MBS which would be solved, in detail, using different methods to illustrate various techniques and formulations. The Chapter on software engineering, I feel, is completely out of place. Again, a useful view but not necessary within the topic of MBS and in the context of this book. To the extent software engineering is discussed, it's best left to a book explicitily on software engineering. It's between too much and not enough. In my opinion, this book would be most useful as a reference to individuals who already have an intimate knowledge of MBS and numerical methods and not to individuals with knowledge in mechanics and software seeking to learn practical formulations and numerical methods for MBS. For the price of the book, I was quite dissapointed amount of useful, "hands on" material. On a positive note, the book does cover many topics in numerical methods (e.g. integrators, contraints..) with great detail. The book is very well written, easy to read, and it apparent that great deal of effort was made to provide elegant formulas and consise notation.

          Book Description

Computing all the zeros of an analytic function and their respective multiplicities, locating clusters of zeros and analytic fuctions, computing zeros and poles of meromorphic functions, and solving systems of analytic equations are problems in computational complex analysis that lead to a rich blend of mathematics and numerical analysis. This book treats these four problems in a unified way. It contains not only theoretical results (based on formal orthogonal polynomials or rational interpolation) but also numerical analysis and algorithmic aspects, implementation heuristics, and polished software (the package ZEAL) that is available via the CPC Program Library. Graduate studets and researchers in numerical mathematics will find this book very readable.

            Book Description

In this follow-up to Afternotes on Numerical Analysis (SIAM, 1996) the author continues to bring the immediacy of the classroom to the printed page. Like the original undergraduate volume, Afternotes Goes to Graduate School is the result of the author writing down his notes immediately after giving each lecture; in this case the afternotes are the result of a follow-up graduate course taught by Professor Stewart at the University of Maryland. The algorithms presented in this volume require deeper mathematical understanding than those in the undergraduate book, and their implementations are not trivial. Stewart uses a fresh presentation that is clear and intuitive as he covers topics such as discrete and continuous approximation, linear and quadratic splines, eigensystems, and Krylov sequence methods. He concludes with two lectures on classical iterative methods and nonlinear equations.

                Book Description

A fixed-parameter is an algorithm that provides an optimal solution to a combinatorial problem. This research-level text is an application-oriented introduction to the growing and highly topical area of the development and analysis of efficient fixed-parameter algorithms for hard problems.
The book is divided into three parts: a broad introduction that provides the general philosophy and motivation; followed by coverage of algorithmic methods developed over the years in fixed-parameter algorithmics forming the core of the book; and a discussion of the essential from parameterized
hardness theory with a focus on W [1]-hardness, which parallels NP-hardness, then stating some relations to polynomial-time approximation algorithms, and finishing up with a list of selected case studies to show the wide range of applicability of the presented methodology.
Aimed at graduate and research mathematicians, programmers, algorithm designers and computer scientists, the book introduces the basic techniques and results and provides a fresh view on this highly innovative field of algorithmic research.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely monograph on a topic of growing importance........2006-08-14

This, to my knowledge, is the first monograph on fixed-parameter algorithms from an algorithmic perspective. There are couple of excellent texts on Parameterized Complexity (Downey et al), but before this book came out, the algorithmic side was never the focus.

Fixed-parameter algorithms are one of the ways we deal with NP-completeness. Fixed-parameter algorithms are (usually) exact algorithms, exponential in the "fixed-parameter" e.g. for the minimal vertex cover problem, size of the minimal vertex cover k, is typically the parameter. Another important factor is the base of the exponent. If the base is < 2, it has substantial effect on the practicality of the algorithm. e.g. naive exact algorithm for m.v.c. has complexity "n choose k" where n is number of vertices. With n=100 and k =20, 100 choose 20 = 5.3598337 × 10^20, while the best fixed-parameter algorithm achievs running times of O(1.28^k * k ^1.5 + kn). Neglecting the constant, this is ~ 58,000! Furthermore, this algorithm uses polynomial space!

The treatment of "data reduction" techniques is excellent, so is the coverage of the theoretically important (and beautiful) Seymour-Robertson graph minor theory. Connections to approx. algorithms chapter is very good too. The material is presented very clearly and should be accessible to advanced undergraduate students.

Fixed-Parameter algorithms are of increasing importance these days, especially in computational biology and many other disciplines. This timely monograph is certainly well appreciated.

Large eddy simulation (LES) seeks to simulate the large structures of a turbulent flow. This is the first monograph which considers LES from a mathematical point of view. It concentrates on LES models for which mathematical and numerical analysis is already available and on related LES models. Most of the available analysis is given in detail, the implementation of the LES models into a finite element code is described, the efficient solution of the discrete systems is discussed and numerical studies with the considered LES models are presented.

                    Book Description

In the past decades, model reduction has become an ubiquitous tool in analysis and simulation of dynamical systems, control design, circuit simulation, structural dynamics, CFD, and many other disciplines dealing with complex physical models. The aim of this book is to survey some of the most successful model reduction methods in tutorial style articles and to present benchmark problems from several application areas for testing and comparing existing and new algorithms. As the discussed methods have often been developed in parallel in disconnected application areas, the intention of the mini-workshop in Oberwolfach and its proceedings is to make these ideas available to researchers and practitioners from all these different disciplines.
