Book Description
Cell culture has progressed to the point where cells can be grown into tissue-like structures in vitro, but these tissues often bear little resemblance to the same tissue in a living organism. This book describes methods of culturing epithelial cells so as to mimic accurately their behaviour
in vivo, and the resulting model systems can be used in a wide range of research areas: pharmaceutics, pharmacology, toxicology, and cell biology. Written by an international panel of researchers, the book details the methods used to reconstruct epithelia in vitro, the procedures used to
characterise these model systems, and the research applications for which these cultures are becoming so important.

Book Description
Animal Cell Culture: A Practical Approach has sold over 10,000 copies since its publication in 1986, and remains one of the most popular titles in the series. This new edition takes account of the progress that has been made in the field. Although the basic principles remain the same, significant advances have been made in areas such as serum-free media, scale-up, and flow cytometry. As these techniques have developed as tools for the cell biologist, their availability to the non-specialist has also increased dramatically. Use of the tetrazolium salt MTT as a colorimetric indicator of viability has made a considerable impact on cytotoxity assay, and DNA fingerprinting has revolutionized the identification of individual cell strains. These, and other developments in the techniques described have made this new edition essential. The emphasis remains on presenting techniques in a readily accessible form, with detailed protocos given throughout. This volume will be of use to researchers involved in both biological research and the commercial exploitation of animal cell culture.
Book Description
The use of animal, including human, cell culture has expanded enormously during the last twenty years, with the new applications appearing all the time. This book guides the newcomer progressively through all those areas which are basic to the performance of cell culture. It will also prove
useful to the experienced worker entering a new field or setting up a new laboratroy, and as a source of reference on basic techniques. The topics covered include setting up and equipping a cell culture laboratory, sterilization of fluids and equipment, culture media, basic culture technique and the
maintenance of cell lines, primary culture and the isolation of new cell lines, specific cell types and their requirements, single cell cloning, quality control of cell lines and the prevention, detection, and cure of contamination.
Customer Reviews:
intro to cell culture.......2001-07-20
I found this book to be very helpful. The information is current and clearly presented. (other texts I purchased had more recent publication dates, but were clearly out-of-date in the techniques and equipment used).
I run a high through-put cell culture lab (about 4000 T175 per week). I purchased the text mainly as a training aid.
50% of my staff 'person hours' come from part time college students who only stayed for one or 2 semesters, thus I am faced with having to train new staff often.
This text gives a good, clear introduction to the basics of cell culture and sterile technique and significantly cut down on the amount of time it took me to train new staff. I made it required reading for all my staff!

Book Description
The immense complexity and cellular heterogeneity of the vertebrate nervous system makes it difficult to study many types of neural processes at a cellular and molecular level. In recent years, the establishment of cell culture model systems for almost every region and cell type in the nervous
system has been crucial in facilitating such studies and in heralding some key breakthroughs in our understanding of the underlying mechanisms.
Neural Cell Culture brings together methods for preparing cultures from a diverse range of neural tissues and cells, from both the central and peripheral nervous systems of mammalian and avian species. Important features of this volume are the clearly illustrated dissection guides accompanying each
chapter, methods for enriching and purifying distinct cell types, and guidance on optimizing cell viability and growth. Each chapter includes valuable step-by-step protocols, hints and tips for success, advice, and background information.

Customer Reviews:
Annoying assumptions make it hard jump into this book.......2004-08-26
I work in the stress analysis department for a large aerospace manufacturer. I got this book because I am interested in developing probabilistic approaches to predicting failure rates for our components, particularly when used in heretofore unexplored environments. I was aware that the marine industry had a long history of attempting just that. I have been working through the book and have found a number of typographical errors (the answers for example 16.1 on 325-326 are incorrect) and the author assumes that you know where some equations come from. I've read several editions of Roark & Young (2nd - 6th) and have no idea where the equations in example 17.1 came from. Perhaps stress analysts who design welds in ships will recognize them but I couldn't find anyone who did. (Is W the section modulus as defined in Bryars, Snyder and Plants? I don't know because W is not defined and subsequent equations don't look familiar either.)
Evan so, the parts of the book that stand alone do an adequate job of explaining and illustrating the concepts and I suspect my goal of learning and developing probabilistic thinking will be reached. I give the author the benefit of the doubt and assume that he wanted me to check his math just to make sure I really understood what I was doing.

Dynamics of Offshore Structures
ASIN: 0521458706 |
Book Description
The book introduces the theory of the structural loading on ships and offshore structures caused by wind, waves and currents, and goes on to describe the applications of this theory in terms of real structures. The main topics described are linear-wave induced motions, loads on floating structures, numerical methods for ascertaining wave induced motions and loads, viscous wave loads and damping, stationkeeping and water impact and entry. The applications of the theoretical principles are introduced with extensive use of exercises and examples. They include conventional ships, barges, high speed marine vehicles, semisubmersibles, tension leg platforms, moored or dynamic positioned ships, risers, buoys, fishing nets, jacket structures and gravity platforms. One aim of the book is to provide a physical understanding through simplified mathematical models. In this way one can develop analytical tools to evaluate results from test models, full scale trials or computer simulation, and learn which parameters represent the major contributions and influences on sea loads.
Customer Reviews:
Best in Class as a Teaching Tool!.......2007-01-18
After many years in industry I have joined the ranks of university lecturers. I have found this book the best source for teaching floating structure responses out there!
John Halkyard
Contributing Author, Handbook of Offshore Engineering
Book Description
The leading authority in the field offers a unique and comprehensive treatment of the construction aspects of offshore structures rather than the more commonly addressed design considerations. Extensively updated, this second edition provides a new chapter on extending offshore technologies to inland waterways and emphasizes recent advances, including floating structures, deep-water structures, ice-resistant structures, and bridge foundations. Construction of Marine and Offshore Structures serves as an important reference for engineers in the oil and service industries and for marine construction planners, designers, and contractors. Customer Reviews:
The only marine and offshore construction book you need.......2007-01-19
This book is FULL of information, interesting, readable, and explanatory. This book takes a long time to get through though, which I suppose is great value. The following are the chapters:
1. Physical Environmental Aspects
2. Geotechnical Aspects (Seafloor)
3. Ecological and Societal Impacts
4. Materials and Fabrication (Structures)
5. Construction Equipment (Vessels)
6. Marine Operations
7. Seafloor Modifications and Improvements
8. Installation of Piles
9. Harbor, River, and Estuary Structures
10. Coastal Structures
11. Steel Jackets
12. Concrete Gravity-Base Structures
13. Other Applications of Offshore Construction Technology
14. Moored Floating Structures
15. Pipeline Installation
16. Plastic and Composite Pipelines, Cables
17. Topside Installation
18. Underwater Repairs
19. Strengthening Existing Structures
20. Removal and Salvage
21. Constructability
22. Deep Sea Construction
23. Arctic Structures
The first three chapters provide excellent background information. Chapters 4-6 are more specific but still general enough to be required reading. The remaining chapters are for you to choose which are most applicable to your company's operations. I don't think any one company actually does all the types of work this book covers, but it's still good to have the introductory knowledge. (Note topside fabrication, which albeit is accomplished on a quayside, is not discussed.) The chapter on constructability is a more recent and important topic.
A competitive advantage is technical knowledge (or at least awareness) of the many different methodologies to achieve satisfactory execution, and this book describes many of them in marine and offshore construction. It is a must read for operations and project engineers, construction supervision, planners/schedulers, and even project managers.
'A Must For All in Marine Construction Management'.......2001-07-06
This is an excellent publication from an individual of exemplarary knowledge of the industry.
Customer Reviews:
Important book for coastal - and maritime engineers.......2004-08-23
Safety and reliability engineers responsible for the design of maritime structures can find in Goda's book all necessary background information for the probabilistic description of loads on those structures. No other book currently exists which gives such a complete overview of all methods to describe random sea waves, with particular attention to the extreme waves. This second edition (2000) contains a number of extensions w.r.t. the first edition (1985) and some sections have been rewritten. The reviewer especially enjoyed studying Goda's outline on correlation models between successive wave heights, marginal probability density functions of wave periods, and joint distributions of wave heights and periods of waves with narrow-band spectra.

Book Description
This is the first book to integrate the theory, design, and stability analysis of plates and shells in one comprehensive volume. With authoritative accounts of diverse aspects of plates and shells, this volume facilitates the study and design of structures that incorporate both plate and shell components. Drawing on his extensive experience in plate and shell theory and design, the author: --introduces the principles and applications of bending of plates; membrane theory and bending of shells; and stability of plates and shells; --explains the crucial elements of roof structure analysis and finite element formulations; --explores topics of current interest, such as plastic design of plates and approximate solution of membrane stress in shells of revolution and in buckling of shells; --describes how to select design approaches according to the functional and safety requirements of specific structures. Each chapter demonstrates the principles, practical applications, and design of a plate or shell component using real-life examples, providing the reader with an in-depth, unified understanding of the theory and function of the component. Chapters are written to be as independent of each other as possible to allow for selective reading on either plates or shells. In addition, the text is conveniently supplemented by appendices of Fourier Series and Bessel Functions. Integrating the fundamental and applied aspects of plate and shell theory, this volume serves as an essential text for graduate students and as an easy-to-use reference for engineers in mechanical, civil, and aeronautical engineering. Book Description
Hardbound. Powered submersibles have enabled the exploration of lake and ocean depths, and are used extensively for inspection of drilling rigs and offshore pipelines. Their potential for the discovery of undersea mineral resources is widely acknowledged.
The design of such vehicles poses many problems not encountered with land-based systems: for example, normal pressures are very large, and many structural elements are extremely sensitive to initial geometric imperfections.
Following a review of the history and development of submersibles, each chapter concentrates on a specific geometric design. The bibliography is unusually complete, and includes summaries of many referenced publications.
This unique book covers all aspects of the structural mechanics, analysis and design of submersibles, and will be invaluable to ocean engineers, naval architects and graduate students entering the field.
