Book Description
The Old Maid's Puzzle
It seems as if nothing is going to liven up Faith Fairchild's deathly dull vacation on Maine's Sanpere Island -- until she buys a beautiful handmade quilt at an estate auction. Lovingly constructed by wealthy, deceased, and detested Matilda Prescott, Faith's purchase turns out to be quite a bargain indeed -- especially when she discovers it to be a map to the old woman's hidden treasure. But instead of pointing the transplanted New York caterer-turned-minister's wife toward the fabled Prescott gold, Matilda's artfully crafted clues lead Faith to a kelp-covered corpse floating in a nearby tidal pool. Once again, the resourceful amateur sleuth has become entangled in a dangerous puzzle, ensnared in twisted, lethal threads of familial greed and cold-blooded homicide. And Faith won't be satisfied until she has the whole murderous matter sewn up.

Murder During an Island Vacation.......2006-09-14
In the 2nd book in the Faith Fairchild Mystery series, Faith and husband Tom (along with toddler, Benjamin) are off to Maine for a relaxing vacation on Sanpere Island. They spend time with Faith's dear friend, Pix, and loaf around the slow-paced island. Things have actually turned quite dull for city-dwelling Faith, until the death of lifelong resident, Matilda Prescott rocks the community. Matilda bequeaths her home to famous potters Roger and Eric, amongst a huge outcry from her family. Not leaving her family out entirely, she makes it clear that the contents of her home are to be auctioned, and the monetary proceeds are to be split among her heirs. Faith and Pix eagerly attend the auction while Tom is away at a conference, and Faith purchases a beautiful unfinished quilt made by Matilda. She quickly learns that it is the last quilt Matilda made, and with the help of Pix, they soon begin to suspect that the quilt is some type of map. Could the map be the blueprint pointing directly to the rumored gold that the Prescotts had hidden long ago? Or could something more sinister lay in the lovely design? When one of the members of the close-knit community is found washed ashore, Faith believes there is a murderer on the loose looking for some gold.
I like the character of Faith, even though I do agree with other reviewers that she can sometimes act a bit pretentious, and is definitely not your stereotypical minister's wife. The mysteries are interesting, and the setting for this book was fresh and charming. I have heard a lot about this cozy series and had read a couple in the past. I really want to like this series more than I do...but find it more difficult to warm up to these books than to several others on the market today. However, something keeps drawing me back to keep reading, and I am sure that I will continue to try additional books in the series.
The first book in the series is called "The Body in the Belfry". Enjoy!

A Pleasant Cozy Mystery.......2004-09-09
I've always found the Faith Fairchild series enjoyable and better than the average cozy. However, in "The Body in the Kelp" too much time is spent on incidental facts instead of working on the major plot points. This causes the solution to be a little disappointing-the motives for the crimes were murky and there were too many underdeveloped story threads.
One other major flaw is the high number of typos, on almost every page it seemed. Shame on publisher Avon Twilight for letting this go through. I wish publishers would realize how unprofessional this is and how it spoils the enjoyment of reading the book.
But, even though this book starts out more promising than it finishes up, there are some clever plot devices, including clues placed in a quilt pattern. That was fun to see solved, and there is enough of a story overall to satisfy the reader.
If you enjoy the cozy mystery genre, this book is worth checking out.
Faith and Pix go to Maine.......2001-06-20
Pix convinces Faith and her minister-husband Tom to rent a cottage in Maine for the month of August. A local artist is found floating in the bay and Faith's cottage is ransacked, of course Faith has to solve the mystery.
The author gives us a vivid description of the island setting. The mystery is a little convoluted, but you won't guess the solution. A really good beach book.
Clues in a quilt.......2000-11-26
This second Faith Fairchild book is even better than the first one. Faith and her family are vacationing on an island off the coast of Maine, along with her friend Pix and her family. An elderly woman is found dead and her newly-completed quilt seems to have clues to the woman's stash of gold coins. Faith and Pix have a real challenge in unraveling the clues, while even more people begin to die. The setting and character interactions in this book are delightful and the mystery has just enough twists and turns to be interesting.

Golden kelp forests shelter a rich community of living creatures.
In these beautifully illustrated pages, youll discover underwater forests that nourish and protect sea life in every nook and cranny, from swaying canopies to hideouts in the holdfasts. As giant kelp stretches upward, it spreads its canopy of golden blades across the waters surface. Shafts of sunlight penetrate this spots to highlight bright sea stars in the red seaweeds. And rainbow-colored snails crawl up the kelp, while fishes hang motionless in this undersea jungle. Monterey Bay Aquariums Natural History Series brings you closer to the living marine and coastal communities of the nations largest marine sanctuary, where youll come face to face with some of the more interesting residents. Produced by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Press, these books will stimulate your curiosity and understanding of the natural world. from chapter 1: "Scramble along the rocky shore at low tide and crouch down in a respectful bow to slippery rocks and seaweeds. Reach out and touch the tangle of nearshore kelps: tough cabbage heads, slick leathery neckties and feathery boas. Out beyond the pounding surf, you can see the canopies of the elegant deep water kelps. Isolated floats of bull kelp bob in the surge like the heads of swimming otters. Stretching upward from the deeper rocks, a snarl of giant kelp spreads fronds across the waters surface."

GREAT!.......2003-10-25
This game is about fish. Freddie the fish tries to help Gramma Grouper find the missing kelp seeds to save the ocean. You go through the ocean and guide Freddie the fish around with his little buddy and find clues and get things to progress during the game. This game is mostly full of exploration but it's also a learning expirience (for younger kids) because of the math questions and problem solving in it.
Recently there was an event where a bunch of girls spent the night in the basment of a church (it's called a lock-in). The girls' ages ranged between 14-16, with two adults to "supervise". I was one of the oldest out of the girls(15). Another girl [who was the oldest (16)] and I played this game. We had played it before, but we decided to take a trip down memory lane. We both found it quite funny and very amussing with the fish characters, their personalities and characteristics. I think this is a great game for littler kids as well as older people, because whoever you are you can have fun either way, you just have to be open.
My three year-old loves this game/learning activity........1998-08-27
My three year old son loves this program. Freddi Fish and his sidekick, Luther, go through a variety of scenes, looking for Grandma Grouper's Kelp Seeds. The objects needed to successfully complete the puzzle are moved each time the game is started. The three year old plays the game again and again. I think a six or seven year old would play the game only a few times.

From the author: Two styrene-butadiene triblock copolymers differing in the length of their styrene blocks (40S-60B-40S and 10S-60B-10S) were used as compatibilizers for PS/PP (4/1) and PS/PP (4/1) blends. The supramolecular structure of the copolymers determined by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), morphology of the blends using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). and their tensile impact strength were chosen as criteria of the compatibilization efficiency of the copolymers used. Different mechanisms of compatibilization for "symmetrical system (PS/PB/SBS) and asymmetrical" system (PS/PP/SBS) were proved. While for the PS/PB blend, the 40S-60B-40S copolymer proved to be a good compatibilizer, for the PS/PP blend, surprisingly, the 10S-60B-10S copolymer is more efficient.

From the author: The esterification of the maleic anhydride residue (MA) in a hydrogenated styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS-g-MA) with a polycaprolactone diol (POL) was carried out in a melt. Experiments in static melts found that the reaction had an induction period followed by a rapid consumption of the reactants. The gel content accumulation was found synchronous to the consumption of the acidic groups during the reaction process, indicating that the crosslinking between the copolymer molecules prevailed over the esterification of the pendant acid group generated by the ring opening of the MA residue. The reaction rate was strongly affected by both the intensity and the pattern of flow. The reaction rate increased as the flow intensity increased. A back-and-forth shear was more effective in promoting the reaction rate than a one-way shear. This reaction rate enhancement is due to the increase in the interfacial area and concentration gradient caused by the breakup of the dispersed droplets in the melt.

From the author: A polyether-block-amide copolymer was successfully blended with eight organoclays and one sodium montmorillonite by melt processing technique to form nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimeter analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, tensile test, and linear viscoelastic analysis were used to characterize the hybrids. The molecular structure of the surfactants in the organoclays was found having a significant impact on the viscoelasticity and the d-spacing gain of the clays. Hybrids from organoclays using surfactants with a single long alkyl tail had a higher d-spacing gain than those from organoclays using surfactants with two long alkyl tails. The melt viscoelasticity was found excellently correlated to the d-spacing gain and hence the linear viscoelasticity could be an excellent indicator for platelet organization in the composites. The melt viscoelasticity is fairly correlated to the tensile modulus and glass transition temperature of the soft and hard segment, implying that the platelet organization plays a role in these properties. Properties such as melting point, thermal degradation temperature, elongation at break, and tensile strength are not correlated to the viscoelasticity. The failure indicates that these properties are irrelevant to or less influenced by the platelet organization. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 47:235-243, 2007. [c] 2007 Society of Plastics Engineers
