Product Description
This handbook offers concise information on the properties of polymeric materials, particularly those most relevant to the areas of physical chemistry and chemical physics. In the second edition of
Physical Properties of Polymers Handbook, each chapter has been extensively updated and revised. The number of chapters have increased from 52 to 63 to include novel polymeric structures, specifically rotaxanes and related materials, self-assembly materials, foldamer supramolecular structures, tribology, mechanical properties of single molecules, and dendrimers, as well as reinforcing phases in polymers, including carbon black, silica, clays and other layered fillers, POSS, carbon nanotubes, and reinforcement theory. The study of complex materials is highly interdisciplinary, and new findings are scattered among a large selection of scientific and engineering journals.
Physical Properties of Polymers Handbook is a comprehensive and authoritative compilation that brings together data and supporting information from experts in the different disciplines contributing to the rapidly growing area of polymers and complex materials.

Understanding Nanotechnology
ASIN: 9812564543 |
Product Description
The research and development of nanofibers has gained much prominence in recent years due to the heightened awareness of its potential applications in the medical, engineering and defense fields. Among the most successful methods for producing nanofibers is the electrospinning process. In this timely book, the areas of electrospinning and nanofibers are covered for the first time in a single volume. The book can be broadly divided into two parts: the first comprises descriptions of the electrospinning process and modeling to obtain nanofibers while the second describes the characteristics and applications of nanofibers. The material is aimed at both newcomers and experienced researchers in the area.
Customer Reviews:
Neutral about it ............2007-08-30
There are only a few books that discuss these topics and only in one or two chapters. This book brings a fair review of the theory of electrospinning and some of the current state of the technology in one reference. I felt like the work of some research groups was not discussed or even mentioned. A problem that many of these books have and make you question its "sientific neutrality or objectivity (sorry if I mispelled)." Good for a first read into the topic and as a starting point for a literature review.
Now some comments not related to the content. Even someone whose first language is not english (like me), can not ignore the large ammount of typos and grammatical errors. I could not control myself and ended up reading and correcting the errors with a red pen. Some people may be put-off by this. I got the paperback edition which has a fair price (compared to other books that you may pay more and get the same quality). The hardback is not worth it.

Book Description
Liquid crystals allow us to perform experiments that provide insight into fundamental problems of modern physics, such as phase transitions, frustration, elasticity, hydrodynamics, defects, growth phenomena, and optics (linear and non linear). This excellent volume meets the need for an up-to-date text on liquid crystals. Nematic and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments is a result of personal research and of the graduate lectures given by the authors at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon and the University of Paris VII, respectively. The first part of the book presents historical background, the modern classification of liquid crystals, and mesogenic anatomy; the second part examines liquid crystals with nematic and cholesteric orientational order. Topics include dielectric and magnetic properties, Frederiks transitions and displays, light scattering, flow and electrohydrodynamic instabilities, surface anchoring transitions, interfaces, equilibrium shapes, and the Mullins-Sekerka instability. Smectic and columnar liquid crystals are covered in more detail by the authors in a separate volume, entitled Smectic and Columnar Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments. The presentation is illustrated throughout by simple experiments, some of which were performed in class. Nematic and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments provides a useful reference intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in liquid crystals, condensed matter physics, and materials science.

Book Description
Herbert Baur provides a simple description of the theory of thermophysics of polymers. In order to illustrate the theoretical skeleton he has only treated the simple, easily comprehensible problems of polymer physics. These, however, in detail. The main points covered are: thermally excited conformation isomery of polymers; phonon gas of ideal polymer crystals; the dissipative thermo-mechanical behavior of polymers, new aspects of viscoelastic behavior, glass transistion, and crystallization.

An Introduction to the Mechanical Properties of Solid Polymers
ASIN: 0521530180 |
Book Description
This thoroughly revised and updated third edition is written by seven well-known authorities in the polymer science community. Each author contributes a chapter which reflects his own interests and expertise in the physical states and associated properties of polymers. Second Edition published by the American Chemical Society Hb (1993): 0-841-22505-2
Book Description
Thermal Analysis of Polymeric Materials systematically treats macroscopic measurements by thermal analysis and the quantitative link to microscopic, molecular structure and mobility. Reversible and irreversible thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum mechanics, and statistical thermodynamics are the roots of the described thermal analysis. The book aims to broaden readers’ understanding of materials and the connection of flexible macromolecules (polymers) to small molecules and rigid macromolecules (minerals, salts, and metals). An effort is made to discover how the long, flexible molecules fit into their small phases which are characterized as microphases or nanophases. Their order ranges from amorphous to mesophase-like and crystalline. Ultimately, it is shown that the basic structure-property-processing triangle is connected to the better-known types of molecules and their common macroscopic phases.
Customer Reviews:
Content.......2007-01-03
I was disappointed with the content of the book. It is largely about the history and general principles. It did not get into methodology or details about polymers themselves. It may be good for the classroom, but is lacking for industry use.

Book Description
Published in association with The Textile Institute, this new multi-authored collection provides comprehensive coverage of the effects of mechanical and physical properties on fabric hand--the way a fabric feels. The book begins with fundamental concepts and the understanding of fabric hand, covering the development of fabric hand evaluation, the effects of fibre, yarn and fabric factors as well as finishing on hand, including the mechanical and physical properties. The latter part of the book goes on to cover statistical methods for evaluating hand and a comparison of hand evaluation in different cultures.

Book Description
The CRC Handbook of Enthalpy Data of Polymer-Solvent Systems presents data that is as essential to the production, process design, and use of polymers as it is to understanding the physical behavior and intermolecular interactions in polymer solutions and in developing thermodynamic polymer models. Providing an all-encompassing collection of current enthalpy data for all types of polymer solutions, this handbook is a ready companion with Christian Wohlfarth's previously published handbooks of thermodynamic data for copolymer solutions, aqueous polymer solutions, and polymer solutions at elevated pressures, which contain only a small amount of enthalpic data in comparison to the data presented here. This volume contains 1770 data sets that include enthalpies of mixing and dilution for the entire concentration range as well as partial enthalpies of mixing and solution at infinite dilution. Special appendices allow scientists to access specific systems and data easily. The CRC Handbook of Enthalpy Data of Polymer-Solvent Systems is a practical, one-stop resource that allows polymer chemists, biochemists, chemical engineers, materials scientists, and physical chemists involved in both industrial and laboratory processes to quickly retrieve relevant information as needed.

Book Description
This volume explores the significant advances in polymer characterization methodology. Recognized experts in the field present descriptions of unique and new characterization methods. The 26 chapters of the volume are divided into four sections covering polymer fractionation and particle size distribution, dynamic mechanical analysis and rheology, spectroscopy, and morphology. Many chapters report on the combined use of several characterization methods in order to elucidate the relationship between polymer structure-morphology and polymer performance.
