    Book Description

Pedro Guerrero spent his entire career, more than 60 years, photographing houses of some of the most illustrious American architects and artists of the twentieth century. Emerging from a modest background, his first professional job at the age of twenty-two in 1939 was photographing Taliesin West, the Arizona home of Frank Lloyd Wright. For the next 20 years, Guerrero was the chief visual interpreter of Wright's homes. Guerrero was soon photographing houses belonging to such legendary artists and architects as Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, Marcel Breuer, John Huston, Philip Johnson, Julia Child, Edward Stone, and Alexi Brodovitch.

Spanning nearly a century, Pedro E. Guerrero: A Photographer's Journey is a fascinating memoir illustrated with over 190 of the author's own photographs. Guerrero steps out from behind the camera and, for the first time, tells his own story along with the stories of the contradictory and complex lives of the extraordinary people he has known, including candid anecdotes about the personal quirks of some of America's legendary magazine editors, architects, and artists.

    BOOK REVIEW

Historic New York: Architectural Journeys in the Empire State

Andy Olenick and Richard Reisem have done themselves proud in this spectacular new book detailing some of New York's most prestigious landmarks. Over three hundred color photographs along with informative text provide plenty of inspiration for New York sightseers and history buffs.

There's something here for everyone as the book covers famous structures like the Chysler Building and the Brooklyn Bridge. It also offers detailed spreads of some of the former dwelling places of famous New Yorkers like Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt, and Susan B. Anthony. But perhaps most interesting are the more little-known treasures: places like abolitionist John Brown's home in North Elba, or the Glen Iris Inn in Letchworth State Park.

The book is divided into eleven regions throughout the state - Long Island, New York City, Hudson River Valley, Capital District, Adirondacks, Mohawk River Valley, Thousand Islands, Finger Lakes, Western Erie Canal, Southern Tier, and Niagara Frontier. Local readers will be happy to learn that several Utica landmarks are prominently displayed including the Stanley Theatre, Fountain Elms, and Union Station. Shots of nearby Hyde Hall and the Oneida Mansion are also included.

Those who wish to venture out of Central New York will also find much for their imagination. Olenick's superb photography is enough to make anyone pack up for a daytrip and the accompanying text by Richard Reisem is both elegant and educational.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Overview of Historic Architecture in New York.......2006-11-08

This book features beautiful interior and exterior photographs of notable architecture from throughout the state. It includes a nice mix of architects, periods, styles and public and private buildings. Expected buildings such as Grand Central Station, New York Public Library and the Chrysler building in Manhattan are featured along with historic homes from throughout the state, Adirondack Great Camps and university and government buildings. Regions from Long Island, the Hudson River Valley and the Capital District to the Finger Lakes, the Thousand Islands and the Niagara Frontier are featured. It highlights Utica's Stanley Theater, Rochester's City Hall and Union College's Nott Memorial. It even includes a houseboat and a Seneca Indian longhouse. The newest building featured may be the Bard College Performing Arts Center designed by Frank Gehry. These beautiful photographs are accompanied by informative and interesting text. The book provides a great overview of the architectural richness and diversity of New York State. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is interested in New York State architecture.

    Book Description

Architectural photographer Richard Payne began this photographic survey of small Texas towns as a part-time enterprise—something enjoyable to do in his spare time out of nostalgia, curiosity, and a love of making photographs that reminded him of his hometown. The effort grew into a book that reflects today's Texas small towns and the practice of architecture as a profession and an art.

The brief period between 1880 and 1930 was the golden age of architecture in Texas. The downtowns of small towns were built then, and since about 1950 there has been a general decline, not only in the architecture and infrastructure, but also in the cultural and economic fabric of life in much of rural Texas.

Looking closely at the architecture of some two hundred towns throughout every region of the state, Payne closely documents in beautifully detailed images the current state of our architectural heritage. For him, the art of architecture stems from both the practical need of civic development and from the dedication, hopes, and dreams of architects, builders, and their customers. "Could we learn and apply the lessons small towns offer us?" he asks. "Could we not have, with all our wealth, energy, and talent, buildings, neighborhoods, and cities in which the 'spirit is cuddled, made serene, made at home with its fellow spirits, proud and happy?'"

Payne's answer, represented by the beauty of his photography and the passion of his writing, "is always yes."

"Texas Towns And The Art Of Architecture: A Photographer's Journey" by architectural photographer Richard Payne is a photographic survey of small Texas towns. Payne embarked on this project as a part-time activity -- something to do in his spare time out of nostalgia, curiosity, and taking pictures of places that reminded him of him own hometown. The 'golden age' of small town Texas architecture ran from 1880 to 1930 and reflected all of the early American architectural styles and influences including Greek, Roman, Italian, Egyptian revival, Spanish Colonial, Victorian, Art Deco, Moorish motifs, and a great many idiosyncratic oddities that defy classification. "Texas Towns And The Art Of Architecture" showcases architectural examples drawn from around two hundred towns throughout every region of Texas. Payne carefully documents his beautifully detailed images, many of which rise to the status of art as reflected through the lens of his camera. A unique addition to personal, professional, and academic library collections, "Texas Towns And The Art Of Architecture" is a very highly recommended reading for students of Photography, Architecture, and Texas History.

If you don't smile several times, feel nostalgic several times, and maybe even get a tear or two, while reading and studying the photos in this book, then you must be too young or just arrived from the former Soviet Union.

Page after page in this book called out to me, "You've got to go there," or "Haven't you been there?" Since the book is a compilation of work over a number of years, many of the subjects in these photos are gone. Many more will be gone. Small towns in Texas, and the Southwest in general, are being transformed.

Buy this book. Read it. Go to the places photographed in it while you still can.

Steven & Cathi House have captured in black & white photography and pen & ink drawings an exraordinary thirty years of travel throughout the Mediterranean.

As architects they are classically trained in drawing and photography; as artists they bring the reader their unique understanding of place and people in a poetic way. "Mediterranean Villages: an architectural journey" is filled with beautiful photos and drawings produced in a top quality hard cover edition.

This is an ideal gift for art lovers, travellers, book lovers and of course, architects. In addition to its extraordinary visuals, it is filled with quotes that keep the reader fascinated.

5 out of 5 stars Mediterranean Villages: An Architectural Journey.......2005-10-19

An extreme close-up photograph of the Paraportiani Church in Mykonos is the first image we see of "Mediterranean Villages:An Architectural Journey" by Steven & Cathi House. It is an arresting photo that accents the sun-lit sides of the stone, plaster, and whitewash structure. The tone is set. Steven and Cathi, architects, lead us, gracefully, through the book, seeing the villages of the Mediterranean through their empathetic hearts and eyes. I am impressed how strongly the quality of the power of indigenous stone used in the village structures, walkways and stairways come through the pages of the book. The pen and ink drawings have a lively and rhythmical perspective. They invite me to walk the stairways-up and down and around the village and become aware of the relationships of the structures to the natural contours of the villages, and to the lives of the people living there

"Mediterranean Villages:An Architectural Journey" is a testimonial to the sensitivity and appreciation Steven and Cathi feel for architecture that is an integral part of the total environment. The book, -- an architectural journey-- is a journey of the heart and soul. There is always something new to see and understand. The excitement of their discoveries which began 30 years ago when they made their first year-long trip to the hill towns of the Mediterranean area continues to feed Steven's and Cathi's imagination and artistry as architects today.

        5 out of 5 stars a classic odyssey.......2005-07-13

Here is that rare book in which the authors' personal passion for their subject joins perfectly with their talents for revealing it to us. As young architects, Steven and Cathi House moved to Greece to learn more about indigenous Mediterranean architecture--and themselves. Over a series of years, their investigations of towns and cities throughout the Mediterranean--recorded in fascinating drawings, indelible black and white photographs, and text--become a record both of the unforgettable landscapes they visit and their own coming of age as architects, artists, and people. This is the sort of book you can open some evening and just wander through a Spanish village, or an Italian hill town, letting it open up to you--then pick another site another evening. Mediterranean Villages is a book that readers will keep close at hand for many years.

5 out of 5 stars Unique Love Letter to the Mediterranean.......2005-06-28

This beautiful book is truly a love letter to a region of the world that these architect / life partners know intimately, and adore. And like the best of classic love letters, the mark of the writers' hands and the depth of their insights are all over this volume, page after luminous page, from cover to cover.

The authors' ardent tribute focuses on the Mediterranean's "architecture without architects." This refers to villages built by the very people who live in the houses and worship in the churches using local stone they have quarried or the earth at their feet that they have baked into bricks and then protected with homemade plaster, whitewash, or paint. Fortunately, Steven and Cathi House do not idealize the object of their passion. Instead, they lovingly reveal these rural Italian, Greek, Spanish, and Dalmatian villages--imperfections, eccentricities, hardships, abandonment, and all.

It is ironic that two formally trained architects are at the helm of a project illuminating villages that were formed so organically and without benefit of architects. Ironic, that is, until you realize that the House's "built" the book very, very slowly in their hearts and minds, over decades of time. In addition, they assembled it very much like hill towns and villages evolve.

Reaching into their respective thick travel journals and rich portfolios of images, the authors selected hundreds of gorgeous black and white photographs and pen and ink drawings to reproduce alongside personal memories. They fortified this text with scholarly research and punctuated the book throughout with quotations they collected from a wide array of famous Mediterranean observers all across the arts. With these "vernacular" materials, they inventively constructed an easy, rambling design and an elegant "coincidence" of images and text that live and breathe like the late afternoon activities of an Italian hill town community on their small piazza in early spring.

Mediterranean Villages: An Architectural Journey offers a unique perspective on an area of the world that is most often praised for its beaches, cuisine, museum treasures, or temperate weather. Simple stone and stucco façades are hereby proven to be evocative, eye opening, and inspiring, too.

This book, from the outset looked like a scrap book. In fact, it contained drawings (sketches, probably a better word), clay models made by Antoine Predock during his many trips overseas over the years. It also contained sketches of architectural buildings designed by him. FYI, the sketches were more like outlines composed by a confident individual rather than technical drawings. Artists would relate more to those. Antoine wrote a brief introductory essay mentioning that it was essential to get both the feel of a place & what he had read about it before undergoing with the design. The end result, ie. the building would remain pertinent to its environment. Antoine is well known for his sensitivity & his inclination towards the spiritual aspect of the place & it showed tremendously in this scrap book. Antoine also stated that he had to sample collages of the place so that his colleagues would utilise them onwards for the design. I can't say I learn a lot about this great architect from this book but I suppose readers who are fond of him would find this book complementary to other architecture books about him.

        Book Description

The second book in the Boston Mills Press Masters of Railroad Photography series presents the work of J. Parker Lamb -- from heart-stopping pans of Gulf, Mobile & Ohio FAs loping through the backwoods of Mississippi, to dramatic images of Missabi Road 2-8-8-4s slogging through the rain in their eleventh hour, and artful time exposures of slant-nosed Seaboard Es in the North Carolina night. Lamb is one of America's most talented and respected railroad photographers. His remarkable images have recorded early diesels in Alabama, Mississippi and the Carolinas, the end of steam in the American Midwest, and contemporary railroading from his home state of Texas to New England, California and Canada.

From Steel Wheels Rolling: Chapter 2, The Dawn of Diesel
It was during a visit to the Boligee depot that I first encountered a locomotive of a different kind. The shiny, green and white Southern streamliner that called on Boligee that memorable 1939 day didn't smoke like regular engines. In fact, the shovel-nosed motor car and trailer assigned to the Meridian-Birmingham Vulcan was like nothing I'd seen before...The mysterious newcomer was the subject of great interest and prompted considerable discussion. My father's words that day echo still. "Son, someday all locomotives may be like this one."

3 out of 5 stars Those Fabulous Steam Engines Are a Sight to See........2005-12-13

Today there are more than one hundred restored steam-powered trains on the tracks ready to satisfy the kid in all of us. As a child, I took the annual train trip to Washington, D.C. from Knoxvillle, Tennessee, for granted. Now, part of the current interest in 'riding the rails' is nostalgia for the old days when time moved slower and there was no hurry to get somewhere. On my trips, there really wasn't much to see except clothes hanging on the lines in backyards, until you reached a Virginia historic town and as you glide through the town, some marvelous building could be seen. Usually, I chose to travel at night.

One of the joys of an overnight train trip is the brilliant night sky, dense with twinkling stars and roaming satellites miles above (keeping watch). Much more can be seen when the city lights fade in the distance for vast stretches between towns. Riding the train is only part of the experience. Many train stations have been turned into museums, where memories and memorabilia of a bygone era of railway travel are stored. At the Southern Railway station, where my trips departed, there are some restored passenger cars on the premises replenished as a historic museum with actual things used back then. It has been lovingly collected and fitted for the train passenger of the past to re-live the things they took for granted. Nothing lasts forever. Parker Lamb tells how he loved to hang around the railroad yards in his Mississippi hometown as a child. In the third grade at John Sevier School, I sold most of my Girl Scout cookies to the men at the Roundhouse down the hill from the school. He says, "Children like the machines, and they like big things. Steam engines make lots of noise. They're hot and even a bit scary. For a kid, they're even better than fire trucks."

Trains still carry passengers from depot to depot, though not like in the Fifties and earlier, just as they did in their heyday. Amtrack is the only long distance carrier at present. This book shows in pictures and text the mass transit history of America before cars took over. The diesel engine shown on the cover became popular and quicker, but now for a short run, the steam engine has reappeared in its glory. In Knoxville, we have the Rambler to take tourists to the place where the three rivers converge to turn into the Tennessee River, just a few miles out of town. Last year, due to the popular movie, 'The Polar Express' they took advantage of the concept and added special Christmas-time excursions with that theme. A popular newsman is this year's host to read parts of the book to the children who think they are in a movie -- before he 'moves up' to the Atlanta t.v. market. Farewell, Ted Hall! Kids love the noise and the sideways rolling of the cars on the rumbling wheels along the track. That shrill (too loud) train whistle continues throughout the return trip to advertise that the train is running today. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad offers excursions through the western North Carolina section of the National Park.

Parker Lamb, the author and photographer of this book says it all, "There is something special and timeless about trains." He is a retired professor at the University of Texas at Austin, has been writing about trains since 1960 and taking pictures of them since 1949. He followed up this one with CLASSIC DIESELS OF THE SOUTH (2003). Earlier he wrote PERFECTING THE AMERICAN STEAM LOCOMOTIVE and KATY DIESELS TO THE GULF. My dad was a railroad man, so I think he would no doubt agree that they are special in many ways, not just nostalgia.

The second volume in the Boston Mills Press "Masters of Railroad Photography", Steel Wheels Rolling: A Personal Journey Of Railroad Photography by railroading expert and photographer J. Parker Lamp is a simply fascinating collection of black-and-white photographs of railroad successes over the course of five decades. From pictures of the last of the American Midwest steam engines through the arrival of the diesel engine and much more, Steel Wheels Rolling captures mass transit history in America in unforgettable impressions. Very brief text captions round out this gorgeous showcase of exceptional railroad photography. Also very highly recommended is the first titles in the "Masters of Railroad Photography" series, Ted Benson's One Track Mind: Photographic Essays On Western Railroading...

In Temples: A Photographic Journey of Temples, Lands, and People, renowned and award-winning photographer Don Busath invites us on a pictorial tour of more than forty-five temples located around the world. He takes us to the temples themselves - and then moves beyond the temple grounds and into the cities, cultures, and countrysides that surround each one. By combining three illustrative techniques - architectural, pictorial, and street photography - Busath emphasizes the idea that temples may be in the world even thought they certainly are not of the world.

As the pictures take us from the historical to the modern, and from the urban to the rural, the beauty of the buildings and their world surroundings are breathtaking, individual, and inspirational.

"It is my hope that though this book members of the Church will enjoy a pleasant recognition of the rich diversity of the temples that now dot the earth," writes Don Busath. "I hope that the images presented here will give the reader a sense that the Church is indeed a worldwide family. As you leaf through these pages and see the many styles of building and design, with samplings of the communities they represent, I hope you can feel the warmth of those communities. My greatest hope, though, is that each member of the Church will feel what I have come to feel - a sort of ownership of these sacred edifices and especially a membership in the great worldwide family of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

Real stained glass is glorious--and terribly expensive. (Yes, you can construct your own, but it requires advanced cutting and soldering techniques, not to mention costly materials.) With translucent glass paint, however, a simulated stained-glass look is now possible, and the effect is a pretty decent imitation of the real thing. Plaid's "Gallery Glass" is the industry leader and is available at almost any craft store for minimal investment. By tracing pattern outlines with simulated liquid leading and filling in the design with some of the 24 window colors, anyone can give their windows, glass doors, and home accessories the appearance of stained glass. Plaid's own book on the subject offers good directions and photos and complete patterns. Though the smaller items (suncatchers, night lights, candlestands) tend toward the cutesy, the large-scale window designs are often restrained and sophisticated. Some practice is required to achieve a professional look, but the basic methods are quite easily learned. --Amy Handy

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book with easy instructions.......2000-05-11

I love this book! I had never done any type of glass painting before I read this book and followed its instructions. Using only this book as a reference, I decorated my kitchen windows and they look very much like real stained glass. The method and materials described here are quite different than those found in other glass painting books. The book is loaded with lots of lovely designs and includes the patterns for all of them.

          4 out of 5 stars Not Bad!.......2000-01-07

I highly recomend this book if you're just starting for its detailed instructions. It's also great if you've been at it for years because it has many cute patterns for special occasions and other times!
