    Book Description

Parasitoids lay their eggs on or in the bodies of other species of insect, and the parasitoid larvae develop by feeding on the host, causing its eventual death. Known for a long time to applied biologists for their importance in regulating the population densities of economic pests, parasitoids have recently proven to be valuable tools in testing many aspects of evolutionary theory. This book synthesizes the work of both schools of parasitoid biology and asks how a consideration of evolutionary biology can help us understand the behavior, ecology, and diversity of the approximately one to two million species of parasitoid found on earth.

After a general introduction to parasitoid natural history and taxonomy, the first part of the book treats the different components of the reproductive strategy of parasitoids: searching for a host, host selection, clutch size, and the sex ratio. Subsequent chapters discuss pathogens and non-Mendelian genetic elements that affect sexual reproduction; evolutionary aspects of the physiological interactions between parasitoid and host; mating strategies; life history theory and community ecology. A special effort is made to discuss the theoretical background to the subject, but without the use of mathematics.

      Book Description

Their natural enemies largely determine the population size and dynamic behavior of many plant-eating insects. Any reduction in enemy number can result in an insect outbreak. Applied biological control is thus one strategy for restoring functional biodiversity in many agroecosystems. Predators and Parasitoids addresses the role of natural enemies in pest control as an integrated pest management concept. It examines how Trichogramma, the extensively studied natural enemy of insect pests, has been used as a pest management tool, and it describes important aspects such as the inducible defense mechanisms of plants and the effects that plant diversity can have on herbivores and natural enemies. Specific chapters address recent advances in biological control: the effects of multiparasitism on parasitization; synergism between insect pathogens and entomophagous insects; and the use of exotic insects for weed control. With contributions from leading worldwide experts, Predators and Parasitoids is ideal for graduate students, research scientists and professionals in biological pest control, agriculture, entomology and ecology.

                Book Description

In this study of arthropod predador-prey systems Michael Hassell shows how many of the components of predation may be simply modeled in order to reveal their effects on the overall dynamics of the interacting populations. Arthropods, particularly insects, make ideal subjects for such a study because their generation times are characteristically short and many have relatively discrete generations, inviting the use of difference equation models to describe population changes. Using analytical models framed in difference equations, Dr. Hassell is able to show how the detailed biological processes of insect predator-prey (including host-parasitoid) interactions may be understood.

Emphasizing the development and subsequent stability analysis of general models, the author considers in detail several crucial components of predator-prey models: the prey's rate of increase as a function of density, non-random search, mutual interference, and the predator's rate of increase as a function of predator survival and fecundity. Drawing on the correspondence between the models and field and laboratory data, Dr. Hassell then discusses the practical implications for biological pest control and suggests how such models may help to formulate a theoretical basis for biological control practices.

                    Book Description

Over the past three decades there has been a dramatic increase in theoretical and practical studies on insect natural enemies. The appeal of insect predators, and parasitoids in particular, as research animals derives from the relative ease with which many species may be cultured and experimented with in the laboratory, the simple life cycles of most parasitoids, and the increasing demand for biological pest control.

There is now a massive literature on insect natural enemies, so there is a great need for a general text that the enquiring student or research worker can use in deciding on approaches and techniques that are appropriate to the study and evaluation of such insects. This book fulfils that demand. A considerably updated and expanded version of a previous best-seller, it is an account of major aspects of the biology of predators and parasitoids, punctuated with information and advice on which experiments or observations to conduct, and how to carry them out. Guidance is provided, where necessary, on the literature that may need to be consulted on particular topics.

While researchers can now refer to several books on parasitoids and predators, Insects as Natural Enemies is unique in emphasising practicalities. It is aimed at students and professional working in universities and both government and commercial institutes in the fields of pest management, agriculture, horticulture and forestry.

                          Book Description

PCBs have been produced commercially for a long time and for a variety of uses. However, their chemical and physical stability has been found to be responsible for the PCBs environmental contamination problem. The discovery of widespread environmental occurrence of PCBs and their apparent link to carcinogenesis drew public attention to the problem, leading to new legislation regulating PCBs. Although regulations and requirements differ from country to country, there is a common global analytical interest in determining their presence in the different matrices and in the environment. The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive compilation of spectral data for the complete set of PCBs.

                                Book Description

This book contains twenty-four contributions from specialists in the field that cover all modern aspects of the analytical chemistry of PCBs. A comprehensive description of different methodologies is followed by a detailed account of the analysis of PCBs in different environmental matrices, such as water, sediment and biota, with particular emphasis on the highly toxic coplanar components. Specific recommendations are also made for improving calibration and intercomparison of the results of large data sets.
PCBs are measured in most environmental analytical laboratories in a variety of matrices and, at present are probably the most studied group of organic contaminants. However, understanding the composition of commercial PCB mixture has been challenging analytical and environmental chemists for more than twenty-five years. This book covers all modern aspects of the analytical chemistry of PCBs and represents the state of the art in the field.

                                    Book Description

The book gives an overview of properties and research methods of new persistent organic chlorine and bromine compounds which have been observed as potential environmental hazards especially as bioaccumulated xenobiotics, but intensively studied only recently. Sources from product uses, industrial processes, wastes, emissions or metabolic transformations are reviewed. Physical and chemical properties and degradation rates useful for environmental fate predictions are given. Observations of levels and trends in environmental compartments are presented. Analytical methodologies and biological effects are described in detail. Compounds reviewed include planar PCBs, PCB metabolites, alkylaromatic chlorohydrocarbons (from pulp chlorobleaching and substitutes of PCBs), polybrominated biphenyls, polychlorinated and polybrominated diphenyl ethers, polychlorinated terphenyls, naphthalenes, dibenzothiophenes and paraffins, toxaphene and tris(4-chlorophenyl)methane derivatives.

                                        Book Description

The environment around the Laurentian Great Lakes region has been adversely affected by agricultural runoff, urban waste, industrial discharge, landfill leachate, and atmospheric deposition. Although there have been some improvements over the last 20 years, persistent toxic organic pollutants are now a serious problem. This book brings together what is known about the major classes of these pollutants in the Great Lakes. Each chapter reviews our knowledge of the extent of contamination of the various parts of the Great Lakes ecosystem (air, water, sediment, fishes, birds, etc.), what is known about the trends over time of this contamination, and knowledge about the mechanisms by which these pollutants are mobilized in the lakes. Detailed information is presented on polychlorinated biphenyls, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, pesticides, toxaphene, polychlorinated naphthalenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, brominated flame retardants, and perfluoroalkyl acids. These reviews make this volume an invaluable resource for all those involved in environmental research, measurements, and decision making.
