A useful book.......2006-09-17
This book can be useful for both beginning muralists and those with more experience.
1 - Beginners: For someone wanting to paint a mural in their child's bedroom, for example, the techniques in this book are ideal - and will easily achieve excellent results. It is even possible to involve the child in some of the simpler methods - if say, between age 6 and 13.
2 - Experienced painters: Before seeing this book, I had already used some of the sponging techniques in my own murals, i.e. to create a soft cirrus cloud haze, or the spray from breaking waves. (It is important to note that there are many different sponges, and natural sponges give very different effects depending on which side you use.) Where details are required, these can be added using brushes of various shapes and sizes as well as various media to achieve the desired effect. It was helpful to match the method of application to the effect wanted, and not be limited by traditional tools.
It is not a modern innovation to experiment with materials on hand, including household utensils and ingredients. After all, the old masters tried many different tools and techniques, no doubt raiding the cook's kitchen for their purposes! (From where else did we get egg tempera?)
I can definitely recommend this book, alongside the likes of Jean Dyrsdale Green's "Arteffects" - which includes sponging techniques using other materials (such as crumpled newspaper or a scrunched up length of masking tape.) Painting Murals Fast and Easy can be a great stimulus for the innovative artist.
Don't bother.......2006-06-30
I got this book because it seemed interesting, but I really don't care for it. For me, the paintings aren't detailed enough. You can't get a lot of little detail with a sponge. Sure, sponges can be used for some parts of a painting, but not for the whole thing if you want a lot of detail. It's the little details that make a painting more interesting to look at.

Book Description
Phylum porifera is an ecologically and economically important group of marine invertebrates, currently a major focus of marine natural product (pharmaceutical) research. Research whilst compiling this book has uncovered a fauna about twice the size as that previously published in the literature and consequently
Systema Porifera revises and stabilizes the systematics of the phylum to accommodate this new knowledge in a contemporary framework. Practical tools (key illustrations, descriptions of character) are provided to facilitate the assignment of approximately 680 extant and 100 fossil genera.
Systema Porifera is unique making sponge taxonomy widely available at the practical level of classification (genera, families, order). It is a taxonomic revision of sponges and spongiomorphis (such as sphinctozoans and archaeocyathans) based on re-evaluation of type materials and evidence. It is also a practical guide to sponge identification providing descriptions and illustrations of characters and interpretation of their importance to systematics.
Systema Porifera addresses many long standing nomenclatural problems and provides a sound baseline for future debate on sponges and their place in time and space.
Sponges are among the most highly diverse and successful of the aquatic invertebrate phyla, with about 7000 described species and at least twice this number extant worldwide. They are an ancient group, largely unchanged in their body plans since the late Cambrian. Once an important reef-building phylum they have radiated and diversified and are found in all aquatic habitats today. They are economically as well as ecologically important being primary targets for marine natural products and pharmaceutical research and consequently our knowledge of sponge biodiversity has increased substantially over recent decades.
The
Systema Porifera describes 3 classes, 7 subclasses, 24 orders, 127 families and 682 valid genera of extant sponges (with over 1600 nominal generic names and an additional 500 invalid names treated). Treatment of the fossil fauna is less comprehensive or critical, although 6 classes, 30 orders, 245 families and 998 fossil genera are mentioned. Keys to all recent and many fossil taxa are provided.

More than Everyman.......2005-01-29
Occasionally you stumble across a writer with a natural gift, not only for putting words together in a pleasant way but for hitting a personal mark, for just plain making sense. This is a terrific collection of Sigars' ongoing streak of pertinent columns in the Mukilteo Beacon. It's a column I read religiously (and so should you) because Chuck speaks for the everyman, the everyman who knows he can be, and is, more than that.
True slices of life.......2004-11-18
Although these essays are often personal to the author's experience and family, they present tales of everyday occurances, challenges, joys, love, pain, parenting, and just plain life experiences that translate into truths that all of us can relate to. Among the these pearls are some more "editorial" type essays that make you think.
The book, with it's many essays, is great to have handy to read when you have a few minutes to relax.

Great Learning Tool.......2006-11-10
My 3 year old loves this set of books, in addition to me. They are teaching her the correct way of speaking and reviewing this all important task for me. I also bought a set of these books for her daycare after having them for a few months at home, they love them now also.
Great Learning Book.......2006-09-18
I bought this book to for my younger one to learn. My older one picked up the books immediately and started reading them to the younger one because they both love the Backyardigans. Eventually I know the younger one will be learning the words since he is starting to pick up the connections. I like the layout of the each of the 12 books with the emphasis on each sound. (Long E, Short E, Long O, Short O etc.). Because the stories are pretty short, the story line can be a little abrupt, but the phonics are very clear in the books. I really like the books and would make great gifts too.
Months later I add to this review. My kids love the books. Younger one is reading more and more and amazes me. They love the pictures and stories from the show so these books are a HUGE hit!!!
Customer Reviews:
Anyone can paint a floorcloth using this book.......2006-01-05
Having made several floorcloths, I was encouraging my sister to try it. I bought this book not only because it offers easy to understand step by step directions, it also makes you realize that you don't have to be an artist to create a beautiful cloth. The author's ideas are so creative, yet simple enough that anyone reading this book will be motivated to give this project a try.
First Floor Cloth Painted.......2002-06-25
I read this book from cover to cover. I am not a painter and have never attempted anything like this before. I wanted to be sure that I was getting all the information I needed to be prepared in painting my first floorcloth. This book is a must have for anyone that wants to start painting floorcloths. The information is very detailed with step by step instructions for many projects. I learned so much about the differences in canvas, paints, techniques, what different tools to have and what they can do. You must check out kathy coopers website. It's great. She has given me the confidence and the background information to enhance my skills as a crafter and artist.
Had to buy it.......2000-05-03
I got this book from my local library and read it from cover to cover. It was informative, clear and made the process managable for non-painter types (like me). I had to have the book!

Book Description
Sponges (phylum Porifera) are known to be very rich sources for bioactive compounds, mainly secondary metabolites. Main efforts are devoted to cell- and mariculture of sponges to assure a sustainable exploitation of bioactive compounds from biological starting material. These activities are flanked by improved technologies to cultivate bacteria and fungi which are associated with the sponges. It is the hope that by elucidating the strategies of interaction between microorganisms and their host (sponge), by modern cell and molecular biological methods, a more comprehensive cultivation of the symbiotic organisms will be possible. The next step in the transfer of knowledge to biotechnological applications is the isolation, characterization and structural determination of the bioactive compounds by sophisticated chemical approaches.

Fun with the sun.......2007-03-11
My kids and I had so much fun with this book. We all made aprons and then took it a step further and created blocks for a quilt with our Girl Scout troop. I was fun using rice, pasta, coins, leaves, rocks, etc. to leave a shadow in our projects. I wish I had more pain with the kit, but was able to purchase more separately.
Book Description

Book Description
As biomaterials that are of vital importance to the productivity, health and safety of the world's land and water, humic substances are increasingly in the scientific spotlight. However, their structures remain something of a mystery. This book, with its molecular approach, brings the reader right up to date with current research, the key features being advanced analytical methods and physical measurements. Spectroscopic and mass-based approaches, in particular quantitative NMR, are discussed in detail as a means of attempting to understand the structures of these complex substances. Chromatographic techniques, including fluorescent fractionation, are also described. The use of coal-based humic substances for soil enhancement, water purification and soil remediation as an alternative to present methods is explored. Comprehensive, with contributions from international experts, "Humic Substances" will have a broad appeal to researchers in many disciplines, including agricultural and environmental science.
