    Book Description

Despite recent advances in genetics, development, anatomy, systematics, and morphometrics, the synthesis of ideas and research agenda put forth in the classic Morphological Integration remains remarkably fresh, timely, and relevant. Pioneers in reexamining morphology, Everett Olson and Robert Miller were among the first to explore the concept of the integrated organism in both living and extinct populations. In a new foreword and afterword, biologists Barry Chernoff and Paul Magwene summarize the landmark achievements made by Olson and Miller and bring matters discussed in the book up to date, suggest new methods, and accentuate the importance of continued research in morphological integration.

Everett C. Olson was a professor at the University of Chicago and at the University of California, Los Angeles. He was a former president of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. Robert L. Miller was associate professor of geology at the University of Chicago, associate scientist in marine geology at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and a member of the board of editors of the Journal of Geology.

      Book Description

This book describes image processing research based on the morphology of the objects in an image and a VLSI design of a Cellular Logic Processing Element for a real-time processor pipeline. The field of image processing has spawned a number of special parallel computer architectures: the Square (SIMD), Processor Array, the Pyramid, the Linear Processor Array (or scan line array) and the Processor Pipeline. This book features a classification of low-level image processing operations, reviews some intermediate level algorithms, and gives a short introduction into computer architecture used for image and digital signal processing. Morphology-based processing images is introduced by treating cellular logic operations such as skeletonization as hit-or-miss transformations. This approach can be extended to images of higher dimensions than two and a method is described to construct hit-or-miss masks for the skeletonization of these images. In the second part of the book a study is performed on the speed bottlenecks that can be found in the main architectural groups followed by the description of a method for the structured design of integrated, digital hardware. The VLSI design of a CMOS Processing Element for the real-time processing of binary images and the board level design of a scalable processor pipeline for a real-time low-level processing of grey value images is described in detail. Finally, a computer architecture for low and intermediate processing of two and three dimensional images if proposed.

          Description:
We studied the field response of Robinia pseudoacacia L. to light, total soil nitrogen, available soil phosphorus and soil pH. Results indicated that there was very strong clonal integration between mother and daughter ramets. Mother ramets can provide nitrogen and phosphorus to daughter ramets sufficient for their continued growth through strong clonal integration, but cannot provide enough photosynthate. With clonal integration, soil nitrogen and phosphorus availability had no effect on biomass allocation to roots, number of ramets and length of connection roots. Biomass allocation to roots increased markedly and responded to nitrogen and phosphorus availability, when the connections were severed. Light had a significant effect on the percent of biomass allocation to leaves and number of ramets, but no effect on the length of connection roots. Daughter ramets allocated more resources to leaves, and clones placed more daughter ramets in high light patches than in low light patches. Soil pH had a significant effect on ramet number and connection root length. Clones concentrated in alkaline patches and escaped from acid patches through selective placement of daughter ramets and changing the length of connection roots. We suggest that the clonal integration may be very strong and provide sufficient soil resources to daughter ramets, then affect the daughter ramets' morphology and placement, if the size of a specific ramet is significantly larger than the other ramets in an arbor clone.

            Description:
In the present study, we looked at cross-modal priming effects produced by auditory presentation of morphologically complex pseudowords in order to investigate semantic integration during the processing of French morphologically complex items. In Experiment 1, we used as primes pseudowords consisting of a non-interpretable combination of roots and suffixes, such as ^osportation, formed by the noun sport ''sport'' and the suffix -ation. In Experiment 2, primes were semantically interpretable pseudowords made of the combination of a root and a suffix, such as ^orapidifier ''to quickify''. In Experiment 3, we used as primes semantically interpretable pseudowords that were designed to be synonymous with existing derived words, for example ^ocuisineur, which, if it existed, would mean the same as cuisinier ''a cook''. Finally, in Experiment 4, we used as primes non-morphological pseudowords like ^orapiduit, -uit being an existing ending of French but not a suffix. The results of the four experiments show that priming only occurs with those morphologically complex pseudowords which are interpretable (including those which are synonymous with a pre-existing derived form), providing evidence that semantic factors are taken into account when the prime is overtly presented. Our results further support the view that morphological effects come into play at at least two processing stages, a morphological decomposition based on formal properties and a semantic integration based on semantic compatibility between morphemes.

                Book Description

Chemistry of Peptide Synthesis is a complete overview of how peptides are synthesized and what techniques are likely to generate the most desirable reactions. Incorporating elements from the author's role of Career Investigator of the Medical Research Council of Canada and his extensive teaching career, the book emphasizes learning rather than memorization. The text uses clear language and schematics to present concepts progressively, carefully excluding unnecessary details and providing a historical context in which to appreciate the development of the field. The author first outlines the fundamentals of peptide synthesis, focusing on the intermediates in aminolysis reactions. Gradually the text builds into discussions of the applicability of coupling reactions, stereomutation, methods of deprotection, solid-phase synthesis, side-chain protection and side reactions, and amplification on coupling methods. The book clarifies the differences between oxazolones from amino-acid derivatives and segments and the implications of their formation on the chiral integrity of products. The author offers a critical analysis of the mechanisms of coupling reactions and the desirability of preactivation. The text explains hindrance and the nucleophilicity of tertiary amines and rationalizes their use. The book also explores mechanisms of acidolysis and the dual role of nucleophiles as reactants and scavengers. Chemistry of Peptide Synthesis supplies a broad, yet straightforward approach that appeals to those with limited knowledge of organic chemistry or chemists from other fields as well as in-depth coverage that can be appreciated by experienced peptidologists.

                    Book Description

Organic chemists working on the synthesis of natural products have long found a special challenge in the preparation of peptides and proteins. However, more reliable, more efficient synthetic preparation methods have been developed in recent years. This reference evaluates the most important synthesis methods available today, and also considers methods that show promise for future applications. This text describes the state of the art in efficient synthetic methods for the synthesis of both natural and artificial large peptide and protein molecules. Subjects include an introduction to basic topics, linear solid-phase synthesis of peptides, peptide synthesis in solution, convergent solid-phase synthesis, methods for the synthesis of branched peptides, formation of disulfide bridges, and more. The book emphasizes strategies and tactics that must be considered for the successful synthesis of peptides.

                        Book Description

Peptides have many roles in medicine, and their potential for future application is even greater. They are involved in the regulation of fertility, the control of pain, the stimulation of growth, cancer therapy, cardiovascular problems, connective tissue diseases, digestive disorders, mental
illness, and infections by microbial or viral agents. The preparation of such compounds by manipulating biological systems (genetic engineering) is an increasingly sophisticated art, but each case requires developmental work, and the approach is at present almost powerless with structural types that
don't occur naturally. Chemical synthesis, on the other hand, is in principle applicable to any target, and is likely to remain very important in the peptide area for the foreseeable future. The emphasis throughout this book is on the chemical principles behind the more important methods of peptide
synthesis. It provides a critical, concise, and up-to-date survey of the field. The term peptide is interpreted liberally, as embracing not only conventional sequences of up to a few dozen natural amino acids, but also protein-scale molecules and structures comprising other residues or unusual
features, for example, cyclopeptides and conjugated peptides. The synthetic methods considered here are treated within a modern mechanistic framework, and illustrated with carefully selected case studies, and this valuable account will be of interest to all those working in the field of peptide
                        synthesis.

                                  Book Description

Penicillins and cephalosporins have a long history in combating bacterial infections. Despite new infectious diseases and occurring resistance, beta-lactam antibiotics will for many years to come continue to play a prominent role in our therapeutic arsenal. This book covers the industrial development of the chemical and biochemical processes used to manufacture these products, as well as looking ahead to possible future processes. The interplay between synthetic organic chemistry with the understanding and application of enzymes, modeling of fermentation processes and integration through (bio-) chemical process engineering is illustrated. In-depth scientific approaches to biocatalysis and biocatalyst development including enzyme kinetics, enzyme crystal studies and semi-rational enzyme mutations are also presented. Metabolic pathway analysis and modeling of fermentation process are treated as well as molecular precision in synthetic approaches to beta-lactams, their precursors and derivatives. Process technology studies including new reactor concepts, possible short-cut routes and improved down-stream-processing methods complete a broad view on the scope and limitations of the presently developed industrial processes including an intriguing insight into future process possibilities. This book represents an excellent case study on the transformation of traditional, stoïchiometric, organic synthesis and classical fermentations into modern (bio-) catalysis and biosynthesis based on insights in metabolic pathways and enzyme actions.
