      Book Description

Apoptosis is a regulated form of cell demise that can be induced or blocked by groups of specific stimuli. Occurring in all living tissues, it is thought critical to the maintenance of homeostasis and is implicated in lowering susceptibility to tumour growth. Conversely, over-sensitivity to apoptotic triggers can cause cells to be lost inappropriately from tissues, as appears to occur in neurodegenerative diseases. This book examines the molecular pathways regulating apoptosis, progressing from the nematode worm through Drosphila to the more complex pathways evident in mammalian cells. Differences in the cell death pathway within specific tissues are addressed, as are the different genes that may act to regulate progressive steps.

        Book Description

Endocytosis is a key feature of virtually all eukaryotic cells. It not only provides crucial nutrients to cells but also plays key roles in a cell's interactions with its environment. Roles for endocytosis in immune responses, transcellular transport, signal transduction, neural function and a variety of pathological conditions are now well established. Moreover, studies of endocytic pathways have provided important insights for understanding basic cellular functions associated with membrane trafficking, protein sorting and membrane fusion. In this volume, experts in their respective fields discuss the molecular mechanisms that underlie endocytosis and the fate of endocytic vesicles in cells.

          Book Description

The Thermodynamic Machinery of Life presents the relevant foundations of nonequilibrium thermodynamics as applied to biological processes taking place at the subcellular level. The biological cell is considered as a complex open thermodynamic system far from equilibrium that enzymatically controls various biochemical reactions and transport processes across internal and the cytoplasmatic membrane. The enzymatic free energy and signal transduction processes are described in detail. All the biological molecular machines, also pumps and motors are considered to be effective chemo-chemical free energy transducers. Special attention is paid to the role of the mesoscopic internal dynamics of biomolecules in the activity control of enzymes and the action of molecular machines.

          Book Description

Cell adhesion plays a central role in development and disease. Cell adhesion to particular ligands can affect cytoskeletal organization and cell polarity, cell proliferation, and gene expression. This book is divided into two parts. The first section provides a discussion of the structure and function of the seven major classes of cell adhesion molecules: integrins, cadherins, selectins, heparan sulfate proteoglycans, the immunoglobulin superfamily, the ADAMs proteins, and transmembrane protein tyrosine phosphatases. The roles of these cell adhesion proteins in important processes such as cell mediated immunity, development and disease are discussed. In the second section, the molecular organization and function of junctional complexes, regions of the cell surface that are highly specialized for cell adhesion, are examined. Junctional complexes are now known to mediate adhesive interactions and contribute to transmembrane signaling events that dramatically influence cell behaviour. The biochemical organization of the adhesive membranes and the molecular mechanisms by which they transmit information to the cell are addressed. Written by contributors among the most prominent in the field, Cell Adhesion covers a wide range of topics in a single volume. It will be a great resource for students, teachers and researchers.

4 out of 5 stars The latest reference for cell adhesion molecules.......2002-08-28

This is one of "Frontiers in Molecular Biology" series by Oxford University press. It is comprehensive and has contained up-to-date information of cell adhesion molecules which is covered with IgCAM, Selectins, Cadherins, Integrin, PTP, ADAM, Focal Adhesion, Heparan Sulfate, Desmosomes, and Tight Junction. As we already knew, the adhesion molecules play an important role in cell survival and programmed death. So this book give some broad specs how to relate each molecules in those cellular behaviours.

However, the one thing I'd like to see next edition is to have color figures and pictures. This book has only black-white figures. In addition, crystal strucures of some adhesion molecules already revealed would also make easy to figure out their configuration how to bind or interact each other.

                    Book Description

The mosses (Bryophatea, Musci) are a diverse and widely distributed group of land plants. Mosses are attractive experimental plants because they exhibit the traditional attributes of good model systems (i.e. ease of growth and maintenance, fast generation time, and amenable genetics) with the added advantage of a haploid gametophyte that allowed developmental mutants to be recovered with relative ease. And, in one of the most exciting developments in Plant Biology, efficient homologous recombination occurs in the moss Physcomitrella patens. The ability to perform efficient homologous recombination (i.e. gene knock-outs) in P. patens is at present unique amongst all plants and represents an extremely powerful technique for the functional analysis of many plant genes. From evolution and development to the homologous recombination and the creation of novel molecular tools, mosses are being used to elucidate fundamental biological processes in plants. This book provides a synopsis of the outstanding basic research being conducted using mosses as a model multi-cellular eukaryote.

                      Book Description

Emphasizing problem-solving and engineering approximation, this chemistry book provides engineers with an understanding of the entities (atoms, molecules, and ions) that are relevant to their lives and professional careers. Throughout the book, internet key word searching and graphing exercises take advantage of users' existing computer skills and encourages them to acquire new ones in designing, preparing, and interpreting graphs. Chapter topics cover atoms, elements, and measurements; nuclides, molecules, and ions; chemical reaction and stoichiometry; gases; quantum mechanics, and the periodic table; chemical bonding and chemical structure; chemical energy and the first law of thermodynamics; the second law of thermodynamics and chemical equilibrium; gas and solution equilibria; liquids and their mixtures; solids; phase diagrams and solutions; the periodic table and redox chemistry; electrochemistry; and rate processes. For engineers preparing for the professional certification exam.

                      4 out of 5 stars A Good Book Overall.......2005-06-28

I thought this book was very good overall. I took Glanville's class and recognized early on that it was going to be difficult to combine two semesters of freshman chemistry into one. The book provided numerous helpful examples to help understand the materials presented and the chapters were logically organized. While there were a number of "boos" in the book as Glanville called them, I thought the writing style and examples were more helpful than most texts I used my first year at Virginia Tech.

1 out of 5 stars Complete waste of paper, time, and money.......2003-12-29

As a engineering student at Virginia Tech, I was very disappointed in this text which was supposed to be "next generation" chemistry for engineers. The book is full of errors, some of which are posted on Dr. Glanville's (the author and my professor) website (http://www.chemistry.vt.edu/chem-dept/glanville/Boofile.pdf). There are many more errors that were pointed out during the semester by students, but for some reason not yet part of the "boofile."

The text is more qualitative than quantitative in nature and has left me feeling like I have wasted my time and money on it. No university professor in his or her right mind would adopt this text. There is also a site http://www.ratevtteachers.com from which you can do a search on 'Glanville' to see what other students think or thought of his text.
