    Book Description

Phytoremediation is an exciting, new technology that utilizes metal-accumulating plants to rid soil of heavy metal and radionuclides. Hyperaccumulation plants are an appealing and economical alternative to current methods of soil recovery. Phytoremediation of Contaminated Soil and Water is the most thorough literary examination of the subject available today. The successful implementation of phytoremediation depends on identifying plant material that is well adapted to specific toxic sites. Gentle remediation is then applied in situ, or at the contamination site. No soil excavation or transport is necessary. This severely contains the potential risk of the pollutants entering the food chain. And it's cost effective. The progress of modern man has created many sites contaminated with heavy metals. The effected land is toxic to plants and animals , which creates considerable public interest in remediation. But the commonly used remedies are ex situ, which poses an expensive dilemma and an even greater threat. Phytoremediation offers the prospect of a cheaper and healthier way to deal with this problem. Read Phytoremediation of Contaminated Soil and Water to learn just how far this burgeoning technology has developed.

    3 out of 5 stars phytoremediation.......2001-01-03

One of the technologies being tested in the AATDF program is phytoremediation, or vegetation-enhanced bioremediation, of fuel-contaminated soil. Traditional biological land treatment of fuel-contaminated soil can often result in final concentrations that do not meet clean-up criteria. One potential approach for the long-term management of fuel-contaminated soils is the establishment of vegetation, because the presence of vegetation may enhance the biodegradation of contaminants. Vegetation may directly aid biodegradation by accumulating, metabolizing, or volatilizing contaminants, as in the example of vegetation that hyper-accumulates metals. Vegetation may indirectly enhance biodegradation of contaminants through the action of rhizosphere microflora. Rhizosphere microflora are supported by exudates, such as carbohydrates and amino acids, released through plant roots and decaying vegetation. High microbial biomass and high microbial activity are associated with the rhizosphere, which may increase the biodegradation of organic contaminants relative to non-rhizosphere soil microflora. Phytoremediation may be especially suitable for shallow, contaminated soils, especially if it is used as a long-term, low-maintenance, low-cost remedial method.

Some investigators, however, believe the beneficial effects of phytoremediation have been over-stated. The effect of vegetation on biodegradation might range from enhancing biodegradation to having no effect or even negative impacts. There is a dearth of quantitative field data on the effectiveness of phytoremediation, especially relative to actively-managed land treatment of contaminated soils. For these reasons, DOD/AATDF decided to fund a field test of phytoremediation. The data from this field test should supply information about the effectiveness of vegetation for the remediation of diesel-contaminated soils. The technology may provide a cost-effective alternative for soils management for the DOD.

          Book Description

Interest in phytoremediation as a solution for contaminants in groundwater and soil has exploded. The project documented in Phytoremediation of Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils presents innovative technology for environmental clean up using in situ treatment. It describes the results of a field study focusing on hydrocarbon contamination, especially polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, in surface and near surface soils. The field demonstration used soils contaminated with aged diesel fuels. The random block design enabled the investigators to test the statistical difference in the effects of different vegetated and unvegetated treatments. They tested the degradation of diesel and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon components in plots containing three different vegetation treatments, two grasses and a legume, and a non-vegetated control. Part one of the monograph gives a complete and thorough account of the results of the field study. Part two covers the design and potential costs of a full-scale implementation of the demonstration system as well as the performance and potential application of the new technology. Phytoremediation of Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils supplies quantitative results about the use of vegetation in soil remediation. The information given on the niches and limitations of the technologies allows for a more informed selection of remedial solutions for environmental cleanup.

            Book Description

The production of a vast array of chemicals, especially petroleum compounds during the last century, has caused a serious deterioration in environmental quality. In this context, one major threat is posed by the continually expanding areas of contaminated soils and sediments.

Biotechnological methods based on the biodegradation of environmental pollutants or phytoremediation of persistent organic contaminants and metals are being developed. Bioremediation has been used successfully to remediate many petroleum-contaminated sites. However, there are as yet no commercial technologies commonly used to remediate the most recalcitrant contaminants, such as explosives, pesticides and metallic pollutants. Nevertheless, bioremediation is a rapidly advancing field and new bio-based remedial technologies are continuing to emerge. For this volume, a number of experts from universities, government laboratories and industry, have contributed chapters on innovative methods in bioremediation and phytoremediation.

              Book Description

This is the first book aimed at developing a common language among scientists working in the field of Phytoremediation. Authors of the main chapters are leading scientists in this field: some of them were among the first to have suggested the use of hyperaccumulator plants for extraction of metals from soils. Members of an EU funded research project on the feasibility of phytoextraction of metals (PHYTOREM project) from contaminated soils were also among the lecturers. Manuscripts based on the lectures presented at the ASI were revised to take into account ASI participants’ comments and suggestions, and went through a round of peer review and editing. Discussion summaries and practical recommendations, emanating from the working group and round table discussions, are provided in separate chapters at the end of the book.

                Product Description

In recent years a boom can be seen in literature dealing with phytoremediation. This Volume contains detailed explanation of basic methods where plants are exploited in environmental remediation. The chapters represent an excellent description of the hottest topics in the field of phyto- and rhizoremediation.

The first part of Volume 9 will address the readers with up-to-date information concerning the necessary theoretical background, both concerning removal of heavy metals from the contaminated environment, and removal, detoxication and even degradation of toxic organic contaminants. Until recently phytoremediation has been discussed mostly in monographs dealing with microbiological remediation methods as a separate chapter, just to illustrate an additional possibility of use of biological systems. This book intends to show especially the importance of cooperation between plant and microorganisms, there is practically no phytoremediation without rhizoremediation. Newest approaches based on methods of molecular biology and genetic engineering are described, as well as plant science achievements. The great advantage of this volume is that the reader will find here in addition to a survey of published data also a lot of original findings, thus supplying an up-to-date review of this quickly developing field of science.

Phytoremediation is a site remediation strategy whose time seems to have come in the past few years, with field implementations taking place in a host of applications. From laboratory studies on plant uptake to full-scale phytoremediation treatment strategies, this volume covers the use of plants to treat contaminants such ha hydrocarbons, metals, pesticides, perchlorate, and chlorinated solvents. In addition to the phytoremediation studies, this volume also covers specialized remediation approaches such as sequential anaerobic/aerobic in situ treatment, membrane bioreactors, and Fenton's reagent oxidation. This book is one of the eight-volume proceedings from the 1999 International Bioremediation Symposium held in San Diego, April 1999.

                    Product Description

Plants play a key role in purifying the biosphere of the toxic effects of industrial activity. This book shows how systematic application of the results of investigations into the metabolism of xenobiotics (foreign, often toxic substances) in plants could make a vastly increased contribution to planetary well-being. Deep physiological knowledge gained from an accumulation of experimental data enables the great differences between the detoxifying abilities of different plants for compounds of different chemical nature to be optimally exploited. Hence planting could be far more systematically adapted to actual environmental needs than is actually the case at present. The book could form the basis of specialist courses in universities and polytechnics devoted to environmental management, and advanced courses in plant physiology and biochemistry, for botany and integrative biology students. Fundamental plant physiology and biochemistry from the molecular level to whole plants and ecosystems are interwoven in a powerful and natural way, making this a unique contribution to the field.
