    Book Description

Concise and manageable, Fessenden and Fessenden's text has earned a reputation as a superb teaching text. One of the only books that students can get through cover to cover in two semesters, it is written in an economical style that stays focused on the main discussion. The authors anticipate student questions and answer them in the same chapter.

Described by users as " the masters of the short sentence." Fessenden and Fessenden are renowned for their clear, to-the-point coverage and masterful selection of topics. The book provides a clear organization of functional groups according to sigma-bonding and pi-bonding to give students a conceptually efficient context that helps them understand the overall content of organic chemistry. Core topics for the course appear in Chapters 1-18 with more advanced and biochemical topics covered in 19-26. Essential information in each chapter is covered in earlier sections, leaving optional material for later sections.

2 out of 5 stars I have the old addition and its no improvement.......1998-12-18

I have had this text for an intro to organic class this last semester, and using the old version for the class was easy since it hasnt changed in the new revsion. I hate to say it but it is well written except for the structure of the molecules since they are all in letter format, why couldnt they revise the new edition with line angle drawings the ink cost is the same.... it makes it that much harder to read with the current typewriter style samples

5 out of 5 stars Great treatment of a difficult topic!.......1998-10-21

This is a fine text. The authors have broken down a rather difficult subject into easily digestable units, which helped my understanding of the whole. You should also use the companion CD. This is a great tool for visualizing the 3-D structure of complex molecules. I bought this book and have refered to it many times. Do yourself a favor and buy this great text!!!

4 out of 5 stars The most helpful I ever used.......1998-02-11

I think if you're chemistry major while you're taking organic chemistry, you should buy this text, because it helps you steps by steps. Of course, whoever disagrees my opinion, I've no control to know which organic text(s) is the best.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Use This Book!.......1998-01-14

There are much, much better texts out there to learn Organic Chemistry. It is a shame that some prof's still use this grossly out-dated and non-mainstream text.

    Book Description

With this book's uniquely practical organization by type of mechanism, you can help your students better understand and organize many reactions, and at the same time, form a more coherent picture of organic chemistry. Without going into mechanistic details and subtleties that would confuse students, Hornback uses mechanisms simply as an organizing framework. Presenting all the reactions that fall under a particular mechanism helps your students think conceptually about similarities and differences in groups of reactions and greatly enhances their ability to remember individual reactions.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory text.......2006-12-16

I used Hornback's 2nd edition for my introductory organic chemistry courses and found the text to be excellent, and often surpassing the in-class instruction I recieved from my professor. If you are an undergraduate student taking organic chemistry I would recommend this text above all others. I often refer to it as a reference now that I am taking advanced organic chemistry. If you read the this text, you will do well in your course regardless of the calibre of instruction you are recieving.

5 out of 5 stars Hornback is the best!.......2006-03-14

This is by far one of the best texts for undergraduate organic chemistry! The explanations are clear and concise, and ideas and concepts are well-organized. The book is easy to follow and the problems, both within and at the ends of the chapters, make the concepts crystal clear.

I used an earlier edition of this textbook and solutions manual when I took organic chemistry (2000-2001), and it (and some great professors) made the class easier and enjoyable. Having encountered other textbooks at other schools, I am grateful that the chemistry department at my alma mater uses this text. I am an organic chemistry TA now, and wish my students were using this book!

Bottom line, I sing the book's praises every chance I get! It's a bit expensive brand-new, but worth every penny!

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 STARS --Say goodbye to Morrison and McMurry?.......1998-06-24

A mechanistic approach to learning organic chemistry seems to make a whole lot more sense than memorizing/regurgitating the slew of reactivities available for each functional group along the way. Why then do we not have a text which allows us to do this? A few authors in the past have attempted to construct a text which views organic chemistry from a mechanistic (rather than funtional-group)standpoint, but none have been able to offer something an UNDERGRADUATE could embrace. Hornback has clearly and logically presented this often intimidating subject here, and should be praised for hurdling the barrier to offer the first readable mechanism-oriented text.

1 out of 5 stars This is not a good textbook.......2006-12-17

I am not finding this textbook helpful whatsoever. I am in a prenursing program at Mills College. Explanations are not thorough and I need frequent help through private tutoring, other chemistry help books and textbooks, workshops. The questions at the end of the chapter asked are not even discussed within the text. It should be understood that the majority of people entering the health field especially nursing are resumers and have not touched chemistry in decades. At least that is the case in my program, it seems like a lot of them are resumers.
More explanations needed. More basic background needed. More examples. Corrections needed to be made for the problems. Plus if the problems are tricky then they should not be in black but in red. A lot of inconsistencies.
The online website program needs to be improved with more interactive demonstrations, videos etc.
I took intro to chem with this book and now i have to take survey of chem with organ and biochem next semester with it.

    1 out of 5 stars Frustrating.......2006-04-24

The explanations provided in this text book are decent; although, on occasions the book's breadth is insufficient. Unfortunately, the answer keys and test questions that accompany this text are riddled with inaccuracies. After my Organic Chemistry class gets back each test, we spend a half hour eliminating faulty questions. Further, while this book is egregiously expensive, one must pay extra to access the online features.

    3 out of 5 stars it isn't the best.......2000-03-31

    Book Description

Written for the short course--where content must be thorough but to-the-point--Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry provides an effective, clear, and readable introduction to the beauty and logic of organic chemistry. McMurry presents only those subjects needed for a brief course while maintaining the important pedagogical tools commonly found in larger books. With clear explanations, thought-provoking examples, and an innovative vertical format for explaining reaction mechanisms, Fundamentals takes a modern approach: primary organization is by functional group, beginning with the simple (alkanes) and progressing to the more complex. Within the primary organization, there is also an emphasis on explaining the fundamental mechanistic similarities of reactions. Through this approach, memorization is minimized and understanding is maximized.

2 out of 5 stars Does it really cut it.......2005-05-05

This book is an OK introductory organic chemistry text however I wanted more. I personally needed a book which gives a clear understanding of the basics and advanced concepts. I found two books which if used together produce the best results.

March's advanced organic chemistry and Organic chemistry by wade (6th edition).

These books are of tremendous help to me in understanding the fundamentals and also the more advanced concepts of organic chemistry. I also wanted to save money as I am doing further organic synthesis and other carbon chemistry subjects later on so I needed a book that is particularly good for reference.

If you are prescribed this book then go for it but I personally feel it doesnt really cut it for me. (I will edit this soon)

          Book Description

Widely and consistently praised as the most clearly written book on the market. Why? In John McMurry's words: "I have been asked hundreds of times over the past ten years why I wrote this book. I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words. I write to explain chemistry to students the way I wish it had been explained to me years ago." Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable for students. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry text applies to McMurry: it works! Mainstream in level, McMurry's coverage is concise yet doesn't omit any key topics. McMurry blends the traditional functional-group approach with a mechanistic approach. The primary approach, by functional group, begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex so that students who are not yet versed in the subtleties of mechanisms are first exposed to the what of chemistry before beginning to grapple with the why. Within this primary organization, the author places a heavy emphasis on explaining the fundamental mechanistic similarities. Currently in use at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada, McMurry's ORGANIC CHEMISTRY is also an international bestseller from the United Kingdom to the Pacific Rim. To be sold to International, Secondary, and other customers. Includes new Organic Chemistry Online 2.0 CD-ROM.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't understand Organic Chemistry then get this book........2006-04-25

I am currently teaching myself Biochemistry, but I was coming across alot of rough spots in that text. My undergraduate degree was in psychology, so I don't have an extensive biology or chemistry background. I picked up McMurry's text to help supplement some of the concepts I wasn't understanding in the biochemistry text and was surprised at how well he explains the material. From reading his text I feel that I am developing a strong background in organic chemistry to eventually understand biochemistry. Also, I'm finding alot of interest in organic chemistry on it's own because of how McMurry presents the information.

If you're looking for an organic chemistry text that presents the information in a manner that allows for heightened understanding than pick up this book.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK - BUT STAY AWAY FROM CHM247 AT U of T.......2004-05-05

This textbook was good - I just hate organic chemistry! I would advise you to buy this book if you need it - just don't go past CHM138 at the University of Toronto, because CHM247 is a pain in the ass.

4 out of 5 stars Ok for Introductory OChem.......2002-03-21

Like many have mentioned, the book is good for beginners and intro classes. The problems and material are relatively "simple." If that is all you require, "easy," not very indepth and just the simple basics, the book does it's job.

          1 out of 5 stars A low-level text masquerading as a rigorous organic text.......2001-07-25

I have taught undergraduate organic chemistry for almost 10 years and have used this book (not by choice) for most of them. This book is incredibly easy to read and that is why many students like it. But the price that the instructor pays for that is in it's lack of depth. This book is NOT rigorous enough for the average science major/pre-professional student. In fact, I have used one semester, nursing level texts that were more rigorous than this book (Harold Hart's Organic Chemistry: A Short Course comes to mind). If you want a comprehensive and rigorous 2-semester organic text, I would recommend Loudon's Organic Chemistry far ahead of this nice and pretty but shallow text.

          4 out of 5 stars A good intro book........2001-03-28

Definitely. It's a great book for first-year organic, I think, regardless of what major you're in, because McMurry seeks to present the foundations of organic knowledge. While it's not as complex as some other books, I think it certainly allows the reader to get a good grasp on what's going on. The fact that it tends to be a light read is a good one -- especially on those nights before the exam when you have to skim through several chapters before morning arrives. :)

So yes. The book itself is very well-presented, with well-diagrammed reactions, colors, and figures that help supplement the text. The textual portions themselves can be a little on the weak side, meaning you actually have to listen to your professor in class. However, if you want a more rigorous and advanced approach to organic chemistry... look up Jerry March.
