Book Description

This is the new edition of the highly successful practical guide for clinicians developing tools to measure subjective states, attitudes or non-tangible outcomes in their patients. It is widely used by people from many disciplines, who have only a limited knowledge of statistics. This thoroughly updated edition of Health Measurement Scales, Third Edition gives more details on cognitive requirements in answering questions, and how this influences scale development. There is now an expanded discussion of generalizability theory, a completely revised chapter on Item Response Theory and many revisions are included, based on the latest research findings. These features combine to provide the most up-to-date guide to measuring scale development available. It synthesizes the theory of scale construction with practical advice, culled from the literature and the authors' experience, about how to develop and validate measurement scales to be used in the health sciences. The theory goes into issues of reliability, generalizability theory, validity, the measurement of change, the cognitive requirements of answering questions, and item response theory. Practical issues cover devising the items, biases that may affect the responses, pre-testing and weeding out poorly performing items, combining items into scales, setting cut points, and the practical issues of using scales in various ways, such as face-to-face interviews; mailed or telephone-administered surveys; and over the internet. One chapter also discusses some of the ethical issues that scale developers and users should be aware of. Appendices lead the reader to other readings; sources of already developed scales and items; and a very brief introduction to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.

    Book Description

Nursing is a growing area of higher education, in which an introduction to statistics is an essential component. There is currently a gap in the market for a 'user-friendly' book which is contextulised and targeted for nursing. Practical Statistics for Nursing and Health Care introduces statistical techniques in such a way that readers will easily grasp the fundamentals to enable them to gain the confidence and understanding to perform their own analysis. It also provides sufficient advice in areas such as clinical trials and epidemiology to enable the reader to critically appraise work published in journals such as the Lancet and British Medical Journal.

            Book Description

Risk stratification is a statistical process by which quality of care can be assessed independently of patient case mix. The evaluation of risk-adjusted patient outcome has become an important part of managed care contracting in some markets, and risk-adjusted outcome rates for hospitals are being reported more frequently in the popular press and on the Internet. This book, written by a statistician and two surgeons for a clinical audience, is a practical guide to the process of risk stratification and does not require or assume an extensive mathematical background. It describes the rationale and assumptions for risk stratification, and provides information on evaluating the quality of various published risk-stratification studies. Numerous practical examples using real clinical data help to illustrate risk stratification in health care. The volume also serves as a step-by-step guide to the production and dissemination of risk-adjusted outcome results for local programs.

              Book Description

Every branch of healthcare has its own particular experience of violence, from direct physical or verbal aggression aimed at members of staff, to dealing with the victims of a crime perpetrated elsewhere. Since the first edition of this book was published in 1994, there have been huge developments in understanding and managing violence in the healthcare setting. Violence prevention is now not just the concern of the frontline healthcare team, but also of architects, service managers, psychologists, governments, health and safety managers, human resources managers, and members of the emergency services. This fully revised and updated new edition will equip all members of these teams with the information required to understand the range of factors involved, and enable them not just to develop strategies to tackle the issues but also to deal with violence when it arises in both hospital and community settings. Coverage includes the causes and nature of violence, including domestic violence, the effects on, and care of, the victims, as well as describing opportunities to limit the potential for violence through good design. This book is essential reading for all those working in, or in association with, health services and related agencies. It is also an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand, prevent or survive violence. From reviews of the 1st edition: 'this short and affordable guide to the recognition, avoidance and aftermath of violence will prepare you for the event' John Bignall, The Lancet 1994. 344:180 'Many health care staff will look for a practical guide to coping and will find this book an excellent place to start ... Those spurred into action could usefully rely on this book to aid the process of effective management and staff support' Arden Tomison, Fromeside Clinic, Bristol, British Journal of Psychiatry , August 1995 'There are no obvious gaps in an eminently readable and well-unified text.' Patrick Hoyte, MDU Nurse, February 1995 '... the book effectively addresses a pressing problem for health care workers: how to cope with aggressive behavior' Ellen H Taliaferro, University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Annals of Emergency Medicine, October 1995 'It would be important reading for those undertaking further study of the prevention and management of violence and aggression ...' John Rawlinson, Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing, Professional Nurse, July 1996

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for Advanced Reaction Theory.......2002-07-12

This book does a good job of explaining the basis for reaction mechanisms and how catalysts work. The technical level of this book requires students to have at least a couple of advanced chemistry classes, such as physical chemistry, in their background. In summary, buy this book if you are looking to expand your understanding of chemical reactions and have a solid understanding of the basic chemistry principles.

4 out of 5 stars Great content, but hampered by mistakes.......2002-03-13

Good book for undergrad and grad students who've already had reactor design and p.chem. Much of the theory, in latter half of the book, takes basis from statistical thermo, so p.chem may be useful. As a student w/o such bkgds, overall I find the book to be very clear in explanation. Delivery of material is deliberate and well thought out. Appreciate the use of many example problems. Unfortunately, no solutions for the Problems at end of chapter.

Unfortunately, the book has a ton of mistakes, some simply typos, but some are very critical mistakes in example problems, some of which are very subtle.

Overall, content is excellent for a one seeking some applicable information (1st half), and those seeking more theoretical treatment (2nd half).

                    Book Description

Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces

As with other books in the field, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces describes what occurs when gases come in contact with various solid surfaces. But, unlike all the others, it also explains why. While the theory of surface reactions is still under active development, the approach Dr. Richard Masel takes in this book is to outline general principles derived from thermodynamics and reaction rate theory that can be applied to reactions on surfaces, and to indicate ways in which these principles may be applied. The book also provides a comprehensive treatment of the latest quantitative surface modeling techniques with numerous examples of their use in the fields of chemical engineering, physical chemistry, and materials science. A valuable working resource and an excellent graduate-level text, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces provides readers with:
                    * A detailed look at the latest advances in understanding and quantifying reactions on surfaces
                    * In-depth reviews of all crucial background material
                    * 40 solved examples illustrating how the methods apply to catalysis, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, electrochemistry, and more
                    * 340 problems and practice exercises
                    * Sample computer programs
                    * Universal plots of many key quantities
                    * Detailed, class-tested derivations to help clarify key results

The recent development of quantitative techniques for modeling surface reactions has led to a number of exciting breakthroughs in our understanding of what happens when gases come in contact with solid surfaces. While many books have appeared describing various experimental modeling techniques and the results obtained through their application, until now, there has been no single-volume reference devoted to the fundamental principles governing the processes observed.

The first book to focus on governing principles rather than experimental techniques or specific results, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces provides students and professionals with a quantitative treatment of the application of principles derived from the fields of thermodynamics and reaction rate theory to the investigation of gas adsorption and reaction on solid surfaces. Writing for a broad-based audience including, among others, chemical engineers, chemists, and materials scientists, Dr. Richard I. Masel deftly balances basic background in areas such as statistical mechanics and kinetics with more advanced applications in specialized areas.

Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces was also designed to provide readers an opportunity to quickly familiarize themselves with all of the important quantitative surface modeling techniques now in use. To that end, the author has included all of the key equations involved as well as numerous real-world illustrations and solved examples that help to illustrate how the equations can be applied. He has also provided computer programs along with universal plots that make it easy for readers to apply results to their own problems with little computational effort.

Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces is a valuable working resource for chemical engineers, physical chemists, and materials scientists, and an excellent text for graduate students in those disciplines.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent text book for surface chemist.......1999-08-27

This is a very comprehensive book on surface chemistry. It explains basic concept and related experimental results very well. The only thing I don't like is that he spent too much on his own theory on chemisorption, which still needs experimental proof. Nevertherless, this is a must if you intend to do some reserch on surface catalytic reactions.

Offering a thorough explanation of electrode kinetics, this textbook emphasizes physical phenomena-rather than mathematical formalism-and elucidates the underlying principles of the different experimental techniques. Assuming an elementary knowledge of thermodynamics and chemical kinetics and minimal mathematical skills, coverage explores the arguments of two primary schools of thought: electrode kinetics and interfacial electrochemistry viewed as a branch of physical chemistry, and from the perspective of analytical chemistry.

                        Book Description

Just a few decades ago, chemical oscillations were thought to be exotic reactions of only theoretical interest. Now known to govern an array of physical and biological processes, including the regulation of the heart, these oscillations are being studied by a diverse group across the sciences. This book is the first introduction to nonlinear chemical dynamics written specifically for chemists. It covers oscillating reactions, chaos, and chemical pattern formation, and includes numerous practical suggestions on reactor design, data analysis, and computer simulations. Assuming only an undergraduate knowledge of chemistry, the book is an ideal starting point for research in the field. The book begins with a brief history of nonlinear chemical dynamics and a review of the basic mathematics and chemistry. The authors then provide an extensive overview of nonlinear dynamics, starting with the flow reactor and moving on to a detailed discussion of chemical oscillators. Throughout the authors emphasize the chemical mechanistic basis for self-organization. The overview is followed by a series of chapters on more advanced topics, including complex oscillations, biological systems, polymers, interactions between fields and waves, and Turing patterns. Underscoring the hands-on nature of the material, the book concludes with a series of classroom-tested demonstrations and experiments appropriate for an undergraduate laboratory.

This book covers in detail all the areas of equilibria and kinetics of the adsorption processes and can be useful both for the engineers and scientists as well as for the undergraduate student. The software included can be used for the the analysis of the processes and for teaching/illustration purposes. Particularly interesting, is part III of the book that covers measurement techniques. The only surprise in this excellent book is the omission of the area of Driving Force Approximations where the author of the book has been actively engaged for many years.

                                  Book Description

Local and global spatial coupling mechanisms form the basis of transport processes that are of fundamental importance for the occurrence and the dynamic evolution of patterns on a mesoscopic and macroscopic scale. The present volume deals with these concepts and investigates applications in the fields of biophysics and chemistry.
