    Book Description

This book is the self-contained third volume of a comprehensive series on nitrogen fixation. It presents the state-of-the-art in regards to genomic sciences applied to nitrogen-fixation research. The advent of genomic sciences represents a new era for biology. The classic paradigm based on the gene has now changed to a paradigm that is based on the genome. The knowledge of the complete nucleotide sequence of a genome and its consequences with regard to both transcription and translation lead to an integral and comprehensive view of the biochemistry and physiology of an organism. Moreover, comparative genomic studies provide new insights for a better understanding of the evolutionary process. Nitrogen-fixation research has fully entered the genomics era since the first complete nucleotide sequences of a rhizobial symbiotic plasmid and a methanogenic archaeon were first reported in 1997. Now, the complete nucleotide sequences of many genomes of nitrogen-fixing organism from different taxonomic groups are available. This volume includes chapters devoted to the genomes of specific organisms as well as chapters that cross organismal lines and analyse general aspects centred on functional genomics, genome dynamics, taxonomy, and evolution. No other available work provides the up-to-date and in-depth coverage of this volume, which is intended to serve as an indispensable reference work for academic, governmental, and industrial scientists working in the areas of genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics, including those studying evolution and taxonomy; to assist students to enter this challenging area of research; and to provide science administrators with ready access to vital relevant information.

      5 out of 5 stars A Phenomenal Treatise.......2006-11-17

Kleinert's work is NOTHING short of phenomenal.
After reading Feynman(+Hibbs) this is the text to follow up.

Sadly the second edition which is in print contained MANY typos.
The third edition fixes much, if not all; it also has added many new topics of various interest.

The core physics remains as solid, and even clearer than the previous editions.

Without casting aspersions on the presentation:
Make no mistake; this is no comic book.
You will suffer, scrape your gyri, and bruise your ego, but will be justly rewarded for your effort in study.

      Consider this an unqualified recommendation.

        Book Description

Optoelectronic devices are currently being developed at an extraordinary rate. Organic light-emitting diodes, photovoltaic devices and electro-optical modulators are pivotal to the future of displays, photosensors and solar cells, and communication technologies. This book details the theories underlying the mechanisms involved in the relevant organic materials and covers, at a basic level, how the organic components are made.

The first part of the book introduces the fundamental theories used to describe ordered solids and goes onto detail on concepts applicable to localised energy levels. Then the methods used to determine energy levels particular to perfectly ordered molecular and macromolecular systems are discussed along with a detailed consideration of the effects of quasi-particles. The function of excitons and their transfer between two molecules is studied and, in addition, the problems associated with interfaces and charge injection into resistive media are presented.

More technological aspects are covered in the second part, which details the actual methods used to fabricate devices based on organic materials, such as dry etching. The principal characterisation techniques are also highlighted. Specific attention is paid to visual displays using organic light-emitting diodes; the conversion of photons into electrical energy (the photovoltaic effect); and for communications and information technologies, the electro-optical modulation of signals.

        Book Description

A polymer is a very large molecule consisting of many atoms covalently bonded like a chain. Polymers take a random coil conformation in solution and entangle each other when the polymer concentration is high. The unique structure gives unique physical properties to polymer solutions. This book is an introduction to the modern theory of polymer physics. It describes basic concepts and methods to discuss the statistical properties of the assembly of chain-like molecules. This involves scaling theory, concentration fluctuation, gels and reptation.

5 out of 5 stars Prelude to Doi-Edward's Theory of Polymer Dynamics.......2002-08-01

The finest aspect of the book is its thickness; in just over 100 pages Doi essentially summarises everything in Polymer Dynamics. In some sense the book is meant as a bridge between the graduate level courses on Polymer Dynamics/Physics and book: The Theory of Polymer Dynamics and hence is assessible only with some background on basics. Nevertheless its serves its purpose pretty well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to theorerical polymer physics.......1998-09-13

Firstly, this book is NOT for someone wanting an introduction to polymer science. There is little here that would be of use in a first course in polymers. The book is very slim (a scarce 113 pages), divided into five chapters covering individual polymer chains, melts, gels, dynamics in dilute solutions, and finally dynamics in the entanglement regime. The intense detail of Doi and Edwards is left out but the level of mathematical description is comparable. Strongly recommended as an introduction to polymer physics, especially because it covers a lot of important issues in a very brief, easy-to-understand, but rigorous fashion.

This text cautions against the too ready acceptance of the phase separation model of micelle formation which neglects to take into account the interfacial tension that exists between two macroscopic phases. Alternatively, the author advances his own mass action model which stresses the dissolution and aggregation of amphiphiles.

            Book Description

The fluorine atom, by virtue of its electronegativity, size and bond strength with carbon, can be used to create compounds with remarkable properties. Small molecules containing fluorine have many positive impacts on everyday life of which blood substitutes, pharmaceuticals and surface modifiers are only a few examples.
Fluoropolymers, too, while traditionally associated with extreme high-performance applications have found their way into our homes, our clothing and even our language.
Much progress has been made in understanding the sometimes confounding properties of fluoropolymers. Computer simulation is now contributing to this with new fluorine force fields and other parameters, bringing realistic prediction within reach of the practicing physical chemist.
Fluoropolymers 1: Synthesis and Fluoropolymers 2: Properties attempt to bring together in one place the chemistry, physics and engineering properties of fluoropolymers. The collection was intended to provide balance between breadth and depth, with contributions ranging from the introduction of fluoropolymer structure-property relationships, to reviews of subfields, to more focused topical reports.

                Book Description

Although it has long been possible to make organic materials emit light, it has only recently become possible to do so at the level and with the efficiency and control necessary to make the materials a useful basis for illumination or displays. The early electroluminescent devices provided reasonably bright light, but required high operating voltages, produced only a narrow range of colors, and had severely limited lifetimes. Recent developments, however, make it possible to manufacture organic light-emitting devices that are thin, bright, efficient, and stable and that produce a broad range of colors. This book surveys the current status of the field. It begins with an overview of the physics and chemistry of organic light emitting devices by J. Shinar and V. Savvateev. Subsequenbt chapters discuss the design of molecular materials for high performance devices (C. Adachi and T. Tsutsui) and chemical degradation and physical aging (K. Higginson, D. L. Thomsen, B. Yang, and F. Papadimitrakopoulos). A. Dodabalapur describes microcavity OLEDs, and Y. Shi, J. Liu, and Y. Yang discuss polymer morphology and device performance. Various aspects of devices based on polyparaphenylene vinylenes are discussed in chapters by N.C. Greenham and R.H. Friend and by H. Chayet, V. Savvateeyv, D. Davidov and R. Neumann. Chapters by S. Tasch, W. Graupner, and G. Leising and by Y. Z. Wang, D. Gebler, and A. J. Epstein describe OLEDs based on poly(paraphenylene) and poly(pyridine), respectively. The book concludes with a chapter on polyfluorene-based devices, which show great promise for producing light in all colors from blue to red.
