Book Description
Learning Classifier Systems (LCS) are a machine learning paradigm introduced by John Holland in 1976. They are rule-based systems in which learning is viewed as a process of ongoing adaptation to a partially unknown environment through genetic algorithms and temporal difference learning. This book provides a unique survey of the current state of the art of LCS and highlights some of the most promising research directions. The first part presents various views of leading people on what learning classifier systems are. The second part is devoted to advanced topics of current interest, including alternative representations, methods for evaluating rule utility, and extensions to existing classifier system models. The final part is dedicated to promising applications in areas like data mining, medical data analysis, economic trading agents, aircraft maneuvering, and autonomous robotics. An appendix comprising 467 entries provides a comprehensive LCS bibliography.

Smith & Van Hess preferable!.......2004-01-12
This book is used as graduate text for GTech, ChBE course, and suffices in context of summarizing a large amount of material on fugacities in mixtures, empirical methods used for prediction and analysis of phase euilibria problems. With no previous exposure to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, I found Smith and Van Hess to be greatly helpful in explaining basic concepts, and providing a lucid, logical development of the subject. While Prausnitz dwells at length on the behavior of mixtures, the development of the subject leaves one wanting for a lot more, and hence this book will always need atleat one complementary text like Smith's book to be a useful text. The topics explained really well in the text include fugacities in gas and liquid mixtures, and calculation of solubilities of solids or gases in liquids. Other areas of thermodynamics are either ignored or coverage is sketchy (for examples treatment of polymers, electrolytes, use of statistical mechanics, etc).
Clearly written , Very good book.......2001-07-21
The book explains clearly the subjects making easy to understand the topics. I would suggest chem. eng to use it as a tool for understanding any specific subject in phase equilibria. It points out clearly the principles. Any book written by Dr. Prausnitz has high quality.
Good solution thermo, but don't get rid of Smith & Van Ness.......2000-11-23
This is the text that is used for graduate ChE thermo at Georgia Tech. I found many of the chapters to be very useful and complete. For example, the chapters on estimating fugacities and solubilities in gases and liquids were very well written. However, I found the treatment of some topics, such as equations of state and supercritical fluids to be somewhat superficial and not developed very well in general. Smith & Van Ness and The Properties of Gases and Liquids were useful supplements.
Errata.......2000-06-18
Simple and interesting..........2000-04-13
I found this book easy to read about some topics that others books make to difficult to understand. I widely recommend this book...

Outstanding presentation of material.......2001-03-16
This book is written for engineers both in school and in the real world. The ideas are clear and well organized. Malone and Doherty have a knack for 'distilling' the important concepts out of a complex project and enabling the reader to learn how to do the same.
Highly recommended!

Book Description
Used widely in courses and frequently sought as a reference, this 2-volume work features comprehensive coverage of its subject. Volume 1 examines the fundamental theory of equilibrium properties of perfect crystalline solids. Volume 2 addresses non-equilibrium properties, defects, and disordered systems. 1973 edition.
Customer Reviews:
A Solid and Tasty Overview.......2007-10-02
This is the first part of a two volume treatment of solid state physics. The presentation is very clear and to the point as the authors does not shy away from introducing right mathematical tools with tasteful introduction whenever needed. For instance it is the only book of this sort(to my knowledge) which discusses the classification of the critical points of electronic density of states in the context of Morse theory(The pertinent parts obviously).
The only thing that it lacks is a solid discussion of crystallographic space groups and symmetry. Given it`s age there is no discussion of quantum heterostructures(quantum dots, wires etc.) and mesoscopic transport phenomena(this would have belonged to the second volume) either. Other than that it is a very complete treatment.
Yet another aspect of the is the fact that not each and every single step in the calculations is filled by the authors. But then, at some point you have to compromise that to delineate the physical picture at a deeper level so it is by no means a weak point.
Very useful book.......2005-06-19
This is a very useful reference book: very basic and in the same time very broad in scope. At least it is a good starting point for a deeper inquiry in many areas. It is good as well for clearifying simple points when you already have an extensive knowledge of a subject: a good fraction of research paper published nowadays are based on models whose origins are apparently unknown to the authors; Jones&March help to sort out many of such papers as hardly correct.
Of course, you should buy both volumes.
A superb treatise for the theoretical physicist........1999-09-19
This book is indeed the 2nd volume of Theoretical Solid State Physics: Perfect Lattices in Equilibrium. As the subtitle specifies, this 2nd vol. refers to non-equilibrium and disordered systems. It is very complete. About the first 100 pages are dedicated to transport theory, Boltzmann equations and relations to density-matrix approach. Other long chapters are about optical properties and superconductivity; about 50 pages are dedicated to excitations; about 200 pages to the defects of solids. I particularly like this book because the authors make often use of self-consistent methods, like Thomas-Fermi one. The unique pity is that the system of units used in each section is not always clear. No mentions also of the most recent nanostructure objects and atomic-force microscopy. I nonetheless highly recommend it, especially to persons who yet have a knowledge of quantum mechanics. For a good and simpler introduction to solid state physics Kittel's book is probably better; about transport theory I'd recommend also the book by Ashcroft and Mermin. These three, I think, are a really must have.

Book Description
Professor Skripov obtained worldwide recognition with his monograph "Metastable liquids", published in English by Wiley & Sons.
Based upon this work and another monograph published only in Russia, this book investigates the behavior of melting line and the properties of the coexisting crystal and liquid phase of simple substances across a wide range of pressures, including metastable states of the coexisting phases. The authors derive new relations for the thermodynamic similarity for liquid-vapour phase transition, as well as describing solid-liquid, liquid-vapor and liquid-liquid phase transitions for binary systems employing the novel methodology of thermodynamic similarity.

Statistical Mechanics, Second Edition

Book Description
This revised and expanded edition of one of the important textbook in statistical physics, is a graduate level text suitable for students in physics, chemistry, and materials science.
After a short review of basic concepts, the authors begin the discussion on strongly interacting condensed matter systems with a thorough treatment of mean field and Landau theories of phase transitions. Many examples are worked out in considerable detail. Classical liquids are treated next. Along with traditional approaches to the subject such as the virial expansion and integral equations, newer theories such as perturbation theory and density functional theories are introduced.
The modern theory of phase transitions occupies a central place in this book. The development is along historical lines, beginning with the Onsager solution of the two-dimensional Ising model, series expansions, scaling theory, finite-size scaling, and the universality hypothesis. A separate chapter is devoted to the renormalization group approach to critical phenomena. The development of the basic tools is completed in a new chapter on computer simulations in which both Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics techniques are introduced.
The remainder of the book is concerned with a discussion of some of the more important modern problems in condensed matter theory. A chapter on quantum fluids deals with Bose condensation, superfluidity, and the BCS and Landau-Ginzburg theories of superconductivity. A new chapter on polymers and membranes contains a discussion of the Gaussian and Flory models of dilute polymer mixtures, the connection of polymer theory to critical phenomena, a discussion of dense polymer mixtures and an introduction to the physical properties of solid and fluid membranes. A chapter on linear response includes the Kubo formalism, the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, Onsager relations and the Boltzmann equation. The last chapter is devoted to disordered materials.
Each chapter contains a substantial number of exercises. A manual with a complete set of solutions to these problems is available under separate cover.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting subjects, but probably not good for a primary text.......2007-04-08
I recently used this book as a primary text in a graduate statistical mechanics course and I cannot recommend it for this purpose. I like the "spirit" of the book, but it was frustrating in several ways. Many of the derivations leave out non-trivial steps. I often found it necessary to refer to other texts and resources (e.g. Pathria's text), where similar material is covered more clearly. Beyond the first few chapters, there could be a better selection of problems. The chapters are quite dense with material, but there are not always corresponding problems. I had some reservations in choosing this text, but there are not many up-to-date graduate texts to choose from. Pathria is about the right level, but a bit too verbose, slow-moving, and dated.
A fine advanced book on statistical physics.......2000-02-08
I liked this book a lot since the first time I read the first edition. It's extremely up to date, many of the examples come from cutting edge research (like the very fashionable soft condensed matter field). But beware the level is a bit high, so it's probably not a good choice to learn about this subject on your own. Its highest utility is as a help to teachers and as a companion of a course on statistical mechanics.
A good survey of condensed matter.......2000-01-13
The focus of this book is squarely on condensed matter physics and so it is definitely not a recommended resource for learning the foundations of statistial mechanics. As such, if you are new to any of the material, this book on its own will not be of much use. It is certainly not "self-contained", as stated on the back cover, as important topics, such as the various models of ferromagnetism, are not fully described or developed before approximation techniques are introduced. That said, this book contains a wealth of information that would be difficult to find in any other single volume. The authors discuss a range of topics from ferromagnetism to quantum fluids, and there is even a good chapter on computer simulations. As many of the systems encountered in condensed matter are not exactly solvable, the emphasis is necessarily on approximation techniques though there is some discussion of the few exact solutions available (for example, there is a detailed derivation of the exact solution to the 2-d Ising Model on the square lattice). An extensive bibliography contains many good references, often to the original papers. All in all, this book is recommended to anyone with a firm grounding in statistical mechanics (and quantum mechanics) who is looking to study condensed matter physics. Keep in mind that this book was published in 1994 so it may not be as current as some. A 3rd edition would be most welcome.
