Customer Reviews:
One of the best books on spiders and insects.......2007-06-08
Also ten stars, if possible! No more words needed, this an excellent compilation on insects and arachnids. Beautiful pictures, tons of information, diagrams and charts. Just like the other book from Firefly "Reptiles and Amphibians", this is one of the best encyclopedias to have in your personal library. Marvelous book, indeed.
I looked far and wide.......2006-04-22
finally i found it. THE BEST INTRODUCTORY ENTOMOLOGY BOOK! My father has a new-found interest in insects, and I spent all of the Christmas season trying to find an entomology book that was informative, yet concise and visually stimulating. This book is FAR OUT. It has great photographs and HIGHLY educational, without going into boring list/description jargon. This book is great for anyone interested in insects or just an entertaining read.
Excellent Compilation .......2005-10-19
The Firefly Encyclopedia series are uniformly excellent. There are several current volumes (Insects & Spiders, Reptiles & Amphibians, and Birds). With luck additional volumes will be added (I'd be especially keen to see one on fishes). The series picks up the tradition started with the David Macdonald's "Encyclopedia of Mammals" by having numerous experts contribute information about the organisms they study. Thus, each species or group of organisms is described by the scientists who know them best. The result is a truly amazing compilation of information about each type of organism.
The Insects and Spiders volume contains information from 23 separate contributors about all types of insects and spider-like creatures. Contents include:
Overview of Arthropods: 6 pages
Millipedes and Centipedes: 6 pages
Insects, general information: 14 pages
Separate sections on (sections without indicated page lengths usually 2-3 pages long): Bristletails, Mayflies, Dragonflies & Damselfies, Cockroaches (4 pages), Termites, Mantids (4 pages), Earwigs, Stoneflies, Crickets & Grasshoppers (12 pages), Leaf & Stick Insects, Booklice and Webspinners, Zorapterans & Thrips, Parasitic Lice, Bugs (16 pages), Snakewings & Alderflies, Lacewings, Beetles (16 pages), Scorpionflies, Fleas, Flies (16 pages), Caddisflies, Butterflies & Moths (24 pages), Wasps & Ants & Bees (24 pages)
Arachnids, general information: 4 pages
Spiders: 14 pages
Mites & Ticks: 6 pages
Scorpions & other Arachnids: 4 pages
The book is lavishly illustrated. There are tons of amazing photographs and lots of beautifully rendered drawings. The text is well written and generally easy to follow. Some sections are fairly technical (I have a Ph.D. in Biology and got lost a few times), but probably 90% or more should be accessible to anyone. I strongly recommend this book for biologists, naturalists, and people interested in wildlife. It would make an excellent gift for a young person (probably junior high +) who likes animals.

Customer Reviews:
Joy of gardening.......2000-05-07
I thought this book was like an encylapidia to gardening, it had so much helpful information, and was so easy to understand and use. If you are a first or pro gardener this book will fasinate you, and give you intresting garning ideas. This book is a must have.
Book Description
Encyclopedia of Insects and Spiders describes and illustrates fifty-one groups of insects and spiders. In addition, two articles introduce the basic biology and natural history of insects and spiders, respectively. Their form and natural history are more varied than any other group of animals alive today. The beauty of butterflies, moths, and dragonflies is in marked contrast to the alien-looking forms of some bugs, scorpions, and spiders. There are hoverflies that look like bees, ants that look like wasps, and even nonpoisonous butterflies that deter predators by resembling unrelated butterflies, which are, in fact, poisonous to their predators. This book provides a fascinating exploration into this remarkable group of animals.

Beautiful presentation by internationally recognized expert.......2001-08-27
The more than thousand full-color specimen photographs in "The Encyclopedia of Butterflies" were taken at the Allyn Museum of Entomology/Florida Museum of Natural History, which houses one of the world's largest butterfly collections. This encyclopedia includes all of the world's butterflies, arranged in four family groups: the swallowtails (Papilionidae); the whites and sulfurs (Pieridae); the brush-footed butterflies (Nymphalidae); and the hairstreaks, coppers, and blues (Lycaenidae).
According to the author, this is the first butterfly encyclopedia to exclude the skippers (Hesperiidae), as they are now thought to show more similarities to moths than to butterflies. Also, butterflies previously classified as separate families, i.e. Satyridae, Danaidae, Nymphalidae, and Libytheidae are combined here as one family, Nymphalidae, "since they have one overriding characteristic: four functional legs. Their first pair of legs are [sic] redundant: they do not function for locomotion." As soon as I read the author's allegation that Nymphalidae had only four functional legs, I rushed out into the backyard. As luck would have it, the first two butterflies I spotted--- a Monarch and a smaller Painted Lady---were both perched on the butterfly bush using only four legs! The Cabbage butterflies over on the zinnias had six legs apiece. Dr. Feltwell, who is an internationally recognized expert on butterflies and who serves as a consultant on the management of butterfly farms in the United States and Great Britain was right! Isn't it odd how after a lifetime of watching butterflies, I never noticed the difference between families until a book like this pointed it out to me? Three things will probably prevent "The Encyclopedia of Butterflies" from being used as a field guide: it is quite a large book; it covers too much territory (the whole earth); and its familial classification scheme doesn't really support a quick field identification.
However, it is a marvelous `rainy day' book. The photographs are gorgeous, and the clearly-written text covers all of the major butterfly families in detail, including taxonomy, structure, life cycle, migration pattern, habitat, and protected status. Read "The Encyclopedia of Butterflies" at leisure, when darkness or weather prevents you from venturing outside with your field book.

Book Description
This well-illustrated and well-referenced book provides a systematic introduction to the modern aspects of the topographical stereochemistry of coordination compounds, which are made up of metal ions surrounded by other non-metal atoms, ions and molecules.
Customer Reviews:
It is a good book but difficult to read........1999-04-18
Zelewsky's book covers an important topic which is typically not covered in detail in graduate classes in inorganic chemistry. Although the book is somewhat difficult to read, which is probably because the author is not a native English speaker, it is worth wading through.
A concise and beautifully written book on stereochemistry........1997-11-19
The book explains the modern aspects of stereochemistry of coordination compounds including nomenclature, chirality elements, isomer counting, helices, chains and knots, gives an account of the historical background and includes many 3D-figures as stereograms. All figures and additional material are available on the internet. The book is well suited for undergraduates, post-graduates and especially lecturers who can benefit from the supplementary material available. Just colors are missing - but this for the sake of a really affordable price.
