Book Description
As in her first well-received anthology, From Gaia to Selfish Genes, Connie Barlow has woven selections from the writings of biologists and philosophers into a unified whole. Once again she explores a range of viewpoints as she invites readers to formulate their own opinions. Editorial passages provide the historical context and introduce the debates that have ensued whenever evolutionary biology has been extended into the realm of meaning.

Beyond the mechanics of biology.......2002-04-17
Barlow has set herself a momentous task. Sifting through a wealth of publications on evolution to distill out the significant works dealing with social issues. Her choices necessarily reflect a broad range of opinions, scientifically sound and otherwise. She's to be commended for providing the reader with a series of starting points to pursue in gaining a better understanding of the chosen topics. As she admits, compiling her earlier collection of works relating to Lovelock's Gaia thesis led her to investigate the impact of biology on philosophical thinking. This volume is the result. In it, she deals with such matters as evolution as a "progressive" force, evolution and "strife," and, of course, the relation of evolution to human morals and religion. Many debates and debaters are featured with their best expressions on the topics she wishes to address. While some authors and some topics might have been added, it is her book, not theirs. She has performed the task well.
She opens with Julian Huxley, grandson of "Darwin's Bulldog," who was outspoken on the "worldview" of the progressive role of evolution. Huxley sees "progress" in evolution as the development of ways for organisms to gain increased control over their environment. Only a selected few organisms have achieved, human beings the most obvious case. George G. Simpson is called upon to refute Huxley's thesis, declares it a myth without substance. He sees Huxley's idea as a typical example of anthropomorphism, stressing that "man is not the measure."
From this introduction, Barlow moves to the "tools and metaphors of evolution." In assessing how evolution works, thinkers in biology have crafted many means of explanation. Darwin used the concept of "wedges" to portray the competition for resources. Barlow offers examinations of Darwin's use of metaphor and how it has affected later thinkers. The key Darwinian phrase, "survival of the fittest" has led to various interpretations on the mechanics of evolution.
Barlow isn't shy about dealing with evolution and "cosmic visions." So long as humans, who appear to be the only animal with a "cosmic view," investigate evolution, there will be discussions of its impact on "spiritual" issues. Barlow's earlier collection certainly typifies "grand schemes" in evolutionary ideas. Here, she opens with the French paleontologist de Chardin in dealing with the relationship of science and Christianity. Not a recapitulation of the antagonisms between science and religion, the choices she's made express the struggle to put the spiritual alongside the biological. Barlow goes far afield in bringing to her collection the widest possible range of voices. Christian "creationist" Henry Morris is included with an attack on natural selection as both "atheistic" and a "religion" in its own right. He is countered by various authors ranging from Darwin to the Pope. It's a fitting and lively exchange with which to conclude the collection. As she must, one supposes, Barlow attempts to reconcile many of the viewpoints using the Gaia hypothesis. She labels this new synthesis "an Earth-based spirituality" combining the mechanics of evolution with an historical human need for something "beyond." In this synthesis, of course, nothing is excluded and there's room for all.
Book Description
For the millions of couples who face divorce each year, The Smart Divorce offers an alternative to court without giving up getting what you want
Research reveals that how a couple conducts themselves during a divorce has far greater impact on their children than the divorce itself. Compassionate, clear, and comprehensive, The Smart Divorce is the first trade book to introduce a dignified, highly strategic solution to divorce-the collaborative process, a nationally acclaimed approach that is fast transforming how couples dissolve their marriages, divide their assets, and reinvent their post divorce relationships, particularly when they share custody of their children.
Based on the central tenet that both participants agree to resolve their differences with no intention of ever going to court, the collaborative process focuses on finding common interests while allowing each person in the couple to hire active legal representation. Stressing cooperation over confrontation and resolution over revenge, the smart divorce is beneficial in that it is generally less expensive and quicker than litigation, gives the couple greater control over the outcome of their divorce, and keeps children out of the controversy.
Guiding readers through the steps of the collaborative process so that they may make better, more informed decisions, The Smart Divorce isn't about "going easy" on your spouse. It's about ending up with more money, less stress, and happier kids without going to court.
Customer Reviews:
User friendly book for non lawyers.......2007-03-19
This book gives a straight easy to follow explanation of what to expect in the collaboarative process. The book guides you through the process step by step and includes helpful questionnaires to see if this is a good fit for your divorce. Lots of useful and insightful material in the Appendix. I would highly recommend to anyone, including lawyers, who wants to get a feel for how the collaborative model might be better than a traditional divorce. I practice in the area, and recommend this book to my clients.
The Healthiest Way to Divorce.......2007-01-14
I just finished this book, which was easy to read and well written. I have practiced
divorce law for 34 years, mediated civil and family law disputes for 10 years, completed collaborative
training, and have begun the collaborative practice of law. I am really
enjoying it and plan to change the focus of my practice to collaborative law.
As a divorced father of two adult children, I have personally experienced the dark side of
divorce via the traditional method and hope to offer clients another option to the traditionally adversarial way of divorcing. This book is a great guide for the practitioner and for those who are considering a divorce. It clearly sets forth the advantages of resolving conflict without the use of the adversarial court system method of "winner take all". I am revamping my website and practice materials and expect to incorporate many of the concepts set forth in this book to assist clients in deciding how they want to pursue their divorce.
I recommend this book for clients and practitioners (attorneys, mental health, financial and other professionals).......2006-11-04
As a family law attorney in Minnesota who believes that helping my clients is more important than maximizing my billable time, I am starting to use the Collaborative Practice method in some of my family law cases. After reading this book, The Collaborative Way to Divorce, I decided that the Collaborative Practice method would be better (less expensive with better outcomes) than traditional litigation for many of my family law clients. In family law cases (most often divorce), I frequently recommend proceeding Collaboratively rather than through traditional litigation, especially where children are involved. The Collaborative Way to Divorce leads both the client and the practitioner (attorneys, mental health, financial and other professionals) through both the benefits and the process of proceeding collaboratively. This book is readable by nonlawyers and lawyers alike and I highly recommend it. I regularly purchase a handful of copies of this book to give out to clients, clergy, and others who may be interested in learning about Collaborative Practice.
One of Two Key Books to Read if Contemplating Divorce.......2006-08-09
This book is one which I would recommend to any individual considering a divorce. One of the authors of the book, Stu Webb, is the "founder" of the collaborative divorce movement. The book should be read before selecting and going forward with traditional adversarial representation. There are several pros of the book are that it is written with one voice - despite being written by two lawyers. It is clearly written. The alternative book is the book with Pauline Tessler as co-author. This books is somewhat longer and more inter-disciplinary in its approach. The co-author is a psychologist. If you are looking for the book that is easiest to read yet, by this one.
Great guide to a great process!.......2006-06-06
Collaborative law is the new divorce revolution and this book is a wonderful, easy to read, well-organized guide. If you want to have dignity, integrity and civility when you and your spouse part, READ THIS BOOK!

Book Description
Former Rolling Stone writer Debby Bull recovers from a broken heart by making jelly. Though her boyfriend dedicates a novel to her and then leaves her in the middle of a party she gives to celebrate its publication, she comes away from it all with more than the bouquet of magazine scent strips that he left behind. In attempting to get rid of his stuff, she discovers the Zen of making jam, and through it the simple pleasure of creating a little world in which things turn out the way they're supposed to. She shares her funny stories of love lost, the twisted road out of her depression and the advice she got from psychics and strangers. Each of the chapters sees her go off in a new direction, looking for help in a different way, from dating again to taking a job, and sampling all the new cultural landscape has to offer to heal, from seeing a shrink to taking a seminar with a relationships guru.
After years in New York and a move to Montana, Bull finds herself suddenly drawn back to her childhood home of Wisconsin, where "USA Today has just announced in a colorful pie chart that the people there are the only ones in the country who are fatter and drinking more beer than they were ten years ago." Bull delights in taking aim at all the celebrities who've crossed her path as a journalist, tossing their worst moments into the stories wherever they help. Wise, funny, and enlightening in spite of itself, Blue Jelly argues that depression, when it sends you off on adventures like these, is very good for the soul. Plus, there are 15 real canning recipes.
Customer Reviews:
I've searched for months..........2005-10-08
I got this book many years ago used from a library on a whim, because I liked the cover. I think I lost it when I moved out of my parents' house and broke up with my boyfriend of two years, *of course* the time when I needed it most. I've been searching for months and scouring my brain for the title of this book, and now that I've found it, *sigh* I can feel my wounded heart healing already. It's a fantastic and wacky book, so random, it's absolutely perfect for the scattered-brain effects of post-breakup trauma.
A lesson to learn!.......2005-10-08
I am glad I read it! I started the book and immediately thought this woman was crazy, a looney, a wack job. After getting a feel for the book I realized that although this woman seemed crazy to me, I related SOME things to her. It's been awhile but years ago I remember going through a break up that was hard to let go. Now, I was in high school and that to me is a teenager thing but I could relate. Different phases, different situations but probably all the same feelings. This book jumps around to different things which keeps you interested on her journeys, all the while learning a little about canning. Something I know NOTHING about. In the end it comes together, it's a amazing how all the jumble of stories, times, thoughts come together to show a lesson learned. Now, I have a feeling each reader will take something completely different from this book, a lesson of some sort!
My favorite line was (I think) from page 85 or 86. She talks about her phase of collecting things. All sorts of things. One being wooden birds on sticks for her garden/yard. her neighbor yells at her "your like Martha Stewart on crack!" I loved it. It was a total giggle out loud!
A Recipe for Mending.......2003-04-09
Simply stated, one of the best books for healing and growth (and humor) I've ever read...well, to be specific, I've ever read 5 times! It's a simple read, yet keeps your eyes glued to its pages; its voice strikes you right to your core and makes you wonder if it wasn't written solely for you! I've loaned it to friends a million times over, and it's never been received with anything less than pure excitement, relief, pleasure, and appreciation. Great writing, great book, great lessons. It's both practical and spiritual, humorous and poignant, insightful and memorable. It's a book you won't soon forget.
"I'm so misrable without ya, it's almost like i got ya back".......2001-06-07
I've been in her shoes, and i know how it feels to search for peace. She does a great, amusing job describing her search. I did not like the ending all that much (too predictable). On another note, i am sure few are going to go to the store and buy a book on canning, yet this book has perfectly good recipes that one can follow. Canning, a lost art, now recovered thanks to DB
Funny, Heartwarming, and Inspiring!.......1999-11-06
I wish I could write as well as Ms. Bull does. In this quick, yet concise memoir, she manages to capture both the emotions of any 30something woman who goes through a painful break-up, and dead-on characterizations of the personalities whom she meets through her travels. Not many books have made my heart skip a beat, put a smile on my face, and made me want to start reading it all over again. This one did--I highly reccomend it! Can't wait for her next book!

Book Description
Although the solution of Partial Differential Equations by numerical methods is the standard practice in industries, analytical methods are still important for the critical assessment of results derived from advanced computer simulations and the improvement of the underlying numerical techniques. Literature devoted to analytical methods, however, often focuses on theoretical and mathematical aspects and is therefore useless to most engineers.
Analytical Methods for Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Problems addresses engineers and engineering students. It describes useful analytical methods by applying them to real-world problems rather than solving the usual over-simplified classroom problems. The book demonstrates the applicability of analytical methods even for complex problems and guides the reader to a more intuitive understanding of approaches and solutions.

Book Description
One major concern of biotechnology is either using enzymes or producing them. Enzyme/protein production is therefore an important starting point for biotechnology. Bioseparation or Downstream Processing constitutes about 40-90% of the total production cost. Driven by economics, highly selective technologies applicable to large-scale processing have emerged during the last decade. These technologies are slowly diffusing to enzymologists who are working on a smaller scale, looking for fast and efficient purification protocols. The affinity-based techniques (including precipitation, two-phase extractions, expanded bed chromatography, perfusion chromatography and monoliths) described in this volume provide current and new cutting-edge methods. Consequently, the book is of main interest to researchers in biochemistry, biochemical engineering and biotechnology, working either in academic or industrial sectors.

Book Description
The study of the spontaneous formation of nanostructures in single crystals is rapidly developing into a dominant field of research in the subject area known as strongly correlated electrons. The structures appear to originate in the competition of phases. This book addresses nanoscale phase separation, focusing on the manganese oxides with colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). The text argues that nanostructures are at the heart of the CMR phenomenon. Other compounds are also addressed, such as high-temperature superconductors, where similar nanostructures exist. Brief contributions by distinguished researchers are also included. The book contains updated information directed at experts, both theorists and experimentalists. Beginning graduate students or postdocs will also benefit from the introductory material of the early chapters, and the book can be used as a reference for an advanced graduate course.
