Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Boring Book !!!!.......2007-05-14

This book made me feel like I was studying and I did not like it one bit. I knew alot of the helpful tips in the book already. I did not finish it I feel foolish for buying it.

1 out of 5 stars Worst book Ever....DON'T BUY IT........2007-05-02

Brown Skin: Dr. Susan Taylor's Prescription for Flawless Skin, Hair, and Nails

This was a total waste of time and money...I returned it. It was way too generic with information that I already know. I was hoping for more in depth information.

2 out of 5 stars Everything you've already read and heard.......2007-04-13

Kudos to Dr. Taylor for her personal achievements, but that does not compensate for the mediocrity that is "Brown Skin". At times it reads like a bland encyclopedia of skin issues and other times like contradictory medical tripe. Reading this book only left me more frustrated at the dearth of good in-depth skin/hair care advice for people of color. Even more frustrating, I emailed her people asking for the ingredient list for her product line. They wouldn't give me a straight answer. Instead they just repeated verbatim the advertisement from the website.

Bottomline: If you know absolutely nothing about hair/skin then this book will be great for you, otherwise pass.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for women of color.......2006-01-30

This book answered so many questions I have had about my skin. Things I never remember to ask a doctor and other things I have asked that they had no answers for me. Maybe it's because often times I represent a minority of their clientele so they don't care to or haven't taken the time to know. This book should serve you as a reference book, one you will turn to from time to time and one you will want to give to the women in your life. Your daughters, your mom and others. Thank you Dr. Taylor for being so thorough.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing! Entirely too general to be helpful........2006-01-01

The book would probably be informative to some people. Overall, I didn't learn a single thing. THE BOTTOM LINE: If you don't know anything about hair and skin care, if you are starting from scratch, then this book might be helpful. If you are like me, and you already read Essence or already have some knowledge of how and when to wash your hair and face, then the book will seem like a waste of money.

Another drawback --most of the advice is incredibly general. A woman of color with skin or hair problems would be better advised to make an appointment with Dr. Taylor or another black dermatologist to get specific advice to help your specific problems. If you have health insurance, one appointment with a dermatologist should not cost to much more than the book.

4 out of 5 stars Laboratory Handbook of Dermatophytes.......2001-03-16

An excellent review of the principles of dermaophyte identification. Wonderfull graphic (photographs, charts) support of the technical principles constituting a procedural guide that is amoung the best available. This resource should stand the test of time as it is well grounded in the fundamentals and avoids jargon likely to be short lived. A MUST HAVE for mycology laboratories and the offices of Dermatologists.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK but it is not great.......2002-09-08

I bought both "The Herbal Body Book" and her book "The Herbal Home Spa". I have tried several recipes from both books. Some work ok, but others are not worth the effort. For example, a cleansing lotion as thin as water ( no exaggeration), or a shampoo that left my hair feeling worse than before I washed. Not all recipes are bad, and some are downright fun to make and use. I don't regret these as a starter, but rather than buy the rest of her series, I will switch to another author.

5 out of 5 stars Pamper yourself!.......2000-01-19

So many of the recipes in Ms. Tourles great book have become staples in my beauty regime. The Minty Astringent is great in the hot summer weather to cool and refresh your complexion. The pH Restorer Facial Steam is wonderful for bringing a healthy glow to tired worn out skin. One of the first few books that I collected on the subject of make it yourself beauty products, I still refer to it very often.

5 out of 5 stars Full of ideas that make great gifts........1999-12-11

Not only is this book full of natural and easy to make beauty concoctions, it's recipes often make great gift items. The book suggests some creative packaging options, and the creative person will be able to think of many more on their own. Some of the ingredients are a challenge to come by, but between the resources referenced in the book, and searching the Internet, you should be able to track most of them down.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Weird drawings, questionable science........2005-03-27

This book was fun to look at, but not really usable. Lots of stylized drawings and self-aggrandizing tales by the author and not a lot of realistic how-to. Also, the explanations about skin care were clearly not written by anyone with a science or medical background.

4 out of 5 stars A Basic Beauty Guide With Heart.......2005-02-14

I must agree to some extent that some (but not all) of the beauty instruction/info within this book is fairly basic. Yet I enjoyed this book much more than I did any of the other beauty books I've read. Robins makes this book special by sprinkling it with personal beauty anecdotes and reminiscences. For example, she takes the reader back in time to the "Fabulous Fifties," when she worked in a department store's cosmetics department. She recalls her childhood jealousy of her best friend's gorgeous hair, as well as her childhood fascination for her mother's beauty routine. She bemoans her teenage quest for the perfect tan.
Aside from personal stuff, Robins also includes some looks back at the cosmetic brands, campaigns, and fads of the past.
If you're a beginner, I think this book will provide good basic information for you. If you're a seasoned cosmetics aficionado with little patience or who is only out for new info, don't bother. But if you (like myself) can find delight in simply talking about cosmetics and beauty and don't mind sitting through related anecdotes and history, then this should prove an enjoyable read for you.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.......2004-08-04

It has been several years since I wore makeup regularly, and lately I had gotten overwhelmed by all the different types on the market today. And I dont read Cosmo. So this book really helped make sense of the dizzying array of products to choose from, and now I'm not so intimidated by the hags at the makeup counter.

3 out of 5 stars Great book but..........2003-02-26

This is a great book, with lots of information written in it, but I guess I was expecting more photos, and there are none. There are drawings, drawings of colors, etc. I was looking for more of a "how to with full color photos" I guess, this is not it. I was looking for more pictures.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money.......2002-11-13

This book had very few colour photos, no application techniques, and often incorrect statements about hair and skin types. There were no insightful tips or "insider information" that would have been useful to back up my current knowledge. Everything was rather juvenile, with suggestions such as "wear sunscreen" and the use of a curling iron too often can "damage your hair." Who doesn't already know that? The "advice" is not worth your money!

      Book Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for hair, nail, and skin care services across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for hair, nail, and skin care services. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                    Book Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "high fructose corn syrup sweeteners containing at least 50-percent fructose and crystalline fructose adjusted to a liquid equivalent of 77-percent solids basis" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

                      Book Description

This study covers the world outlook for high fructose corn syrup sweeteners containing at least 50-percent fructose and crystalline fructose adjusted to a liquid equivalent of 77-percent solids basis across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
