    Book Description

Developments in tissue engineering for human medicine are increasing rapidly. Advances in stem cell biology, biomaterials science and scaffold design underpin this emerging science. An equally important facet of this field is the rational design and operation of bioreactors to control the nascent tissue growth. For the first time in a single volume, the design, characterisation and operation of the bioreactor system in which the tissue is grown is detailed. Bioreactors for Tissue Engineering presents an overall picture of the current state of knowledge in the engineering of bioreactors for several tissue types (bone, cartilage, vascular), addresses the issue of mechanical conditioning of the tissue, and describes the use of techniques such as MRI for monitoring tissue growth. This unique volume is dedicated to the fundamentals and application of bioreactor technology to tissue engineering products. Not only will it appeal to graduate students and experienced researchers in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, but also to tissue engineers and culture technologists, academic and industrial chemical engineers, biochemical engineers and cell biologists who wish to understand the criteria used to design and develop novel systems for tissue growth in vitro.

    Book Description

The opportunity that tissue engineering provides for medicine is extraordinary. In the United States alone, over half-a-trillion dollars are spent each year to care for patients who suffer from tissue loss or dysfunction. Although numerous books and reviews have been written on tissue engineering, none has been as comprehensive in its defining of the field. Principles of Tissue Engineering combines in one volume the prerequisites for a general understanding of tissue growth and development, the tools and theoretical information needed to design tissues and organs, as well as a presentation of applications of tissue engineering to diseases affecting specific organ systems. The first edition of the book, published in 1997, is the definite reference in the field. Since that time, however, the discipline has grown tremendously, and few experts would have been able to predict the explosion in our knowledge of gene expression, cell growth and differentiation, the variety of stem cells, new polymers and materials that are now available, or even the successful introduction of the first tissue-engineered products into the marketplace. There was a need for a new edition, and this need has been met with a product that defines and captures the sense of excitement, understanding and anticipation that has followed from the evolution of this fascinating and important field.

    2 out of 5 stars One sided.......2002-04-18

The book is mistitled as 'Principles' since it does not really do justice to the foundations of the field. It is more of a compilations of the research work of a 'few' investigators in the field.

4 out of 5 stars Covering the whole body.......2001-09-28

This is a great book, covering most details of its field. It describes the physicians (and their patients) dream of substituting organs and cells and it also shows, how mankind could not solve problems ý up to now. History of artificial organs lacking the full function is one point, but the focus is on cells and their ability to build complete organs ý and therefore the book looks on the pathway for the future of organ substitution.
The introduction covers some main ideas of tissue engineering ý what do we want ý what are we able to do ý what do we still have to get knowledge of. After a short review of the history, the essentials of cell biology (Growth, Differentiation) are being introduced. The reader should have an idea of developmental biology to be able to follow topics like induction and morphogenesis. The authors emphasize the importance of the extracellular matrix as one of organ-prosthesisý main building blocks (ECM = scaffold; cells = function; cell signalling = integration and physiology).
The second part describes technical aspects of in-vitro organ synthesis: tissue culture and ECM, tissue culture und growth factors, bioreactors and vascularization. The third part continues with in-vivo techniques of organ reparation, exemplified by methods for substitution of the ECM of skin, peripheral nerves and meniscus.
Parts 4 ý 6 develop models for the substitution of the ECM (Collagen, BioPolymers), their implantation in the receiving organism and the resulting immunologic problems (emphasized).
Parts 7 ý 20 are concerned with the organs themselves. After few words about stem cells and gene therapy the book explains reconstruction and substitution methods for breast, heart and blood vessels, Cornea, endocrine glands, liver (very good), kidney and haematopoietic system. Biomechanical problems are outlined in the part about the musculoskeletal system. On this place tissue engineering celebrates its oldest success (cartilage substitution). Today innervation processes are being focused.
The book continues with substitutes for the senses (ear and eye), nerve cells, nerve regeneration and neural stem cells. Dents and skin could be all to make an ill patient ýhealthyý by substitutes, one might think. But no, western medicine also knows something about substitutes for womb and placentaý
On me the book made a good impression. The only point is: itýs quite too much text and too few pictures. It addresses medicals after their exams, practicing physicians and biologists. Chapters focus on the basic principles. There is a large number of links to more detailed publications.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for students and researchers.......2000-12-03

A vast, detailed summary of the latest advances in tissue engineering.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2000-11-13

A few too many equations, but clearly the most comprehensive text in the field. Contributors list reads like a 'Who's Who' of tissue engineering.

      Book Description

Tissue or organ transplantation are among the few options available for patients with excessive skin loss, heart or liver failure, and many common ailments, and the demand for replacement tissue greatly exceeds the supply, even before one considers the serious constraints of immunological tissue type matching to avoid immune rejection. Tissue engineering promises to help sidestep constraints on availability and overcome the scientific challenges, with huge medical benefits. This book lays out the principles of tissue engineering. It will be a useful reference work for those associated with this field and as a textbook for specialized courses in the subject. It is a companion volume to Saltzman's OUP book on drug delivery.

Principles of Tissue Engineering, Third Edition
This text is so well written and organized that it virtually defines the frontiers of the life sciences for the next 100 years, an era that promises to deliver to mankind what our fellow humans only dreamed about for millennia. Truly this text is a milestone in what others have termed "The Century of the Biologist". As a craniofacial and dentoalveolar applied biologist I have shared the information in this book with my patients who not only marvel at the phenomenal explosion of data but also the practial applications that it explains and justifies. If you consider yourself an intellectual clinician, a dedicated educator of life science( at any pedagogical level) or commited basic scientists this text is the kind of absolutely requied reading you would voluntarily purchase for the thrill of free inquiry that feeds the disquiet spirits of the insatiably curious mind.
Each edition will prove, no doubt, to be as eagerly anticipated by serious scientists as devotees and readers of television soap operas or mystery novels awaiting the next development in a captivating plot. For those of us in the "real world" of clinical translational studies we are proud and privileged to have such fertile and generous minds behind our professional endeavors and scholastic avocations.
