The Great Mortality: An Intimate History of the Black Death, the Most Devastating Plague of All Time (P.S.)
ASIN: 0521801508 |
Book Description
The threat of unstoppable plagues, such as AIDS and Ebola, is always with us. In Europe, the most devastating plagues were those from the Black Death pandemic in the 1300s to the Great Plague of London in 1665. For the past 100 years it has been accepted that Yersinia pestis, the infective agent of bubonic plague, was responsible for these epidemics. This book combines modern concepts of epidemiology and molecular biology with computer-modeling. Applying these concepts to the analysis of historical epidemics, the authors show that they were not, in fact, outbreaks of bubonic plague. Biology of Plagues offers a completely new interdisciplinary interpretation of the plagues of Europe, and establishes them within a geographical, historical, and demographic framework. This fascinating detective work will be of interest to readers in the social and biological sciences, and lessons learned will underline the implications of historical plagues for modern-day epidemiology.

Practical Book.......2007-02-10
Practical book with very easy to follow and concise protocols about protein purification
If you have to purify and analyze proteins but you re not an expert this is the book for you.
excellent and clearly presented.......1999-03-08
This is a model for all protocol lab manuals. It is clear, precise, and well done. Incorporates the experiences of the authors, which are used to perfect the assays and protocols and minimize insufficient results and data. Troubleshooting tips are useful and original. Truly a necessary benchtop reference for the serious researcher.
Book Description
This manual has been designed to help traffic accident investigators and reconstructionists meet the high standard of performance and expertise necessary to determine vehicle lamp status for on and off conditions at the time of a vehicle collision. Each chapter provides clear definitions of and statements about the topics it contains, with graduated commentary arranged so as to present a natural development and understanding of the chapter subject matter. A number of working hypotheses using examples and photographs are provided to assist the examining technician or analyst in the interpretation of items of evidence that might be presented. The text discusses examining the vehicle for exhibits, the precautions that must be taken in collecting and preserving evidence, lamp identification and analysis, hot and cold shock analysis, packaging and transferring exhibits to the forensic science laboratory, and the mistakes that are inherent in investigations and how to avoid them. In addition, the application of physics and vehicle behavior in relation to lamp damages is thoroughly discussed. The book has been written in a clear and concise style that is further enhanced by the liberal use of illustrations. It has been designed not only for use as a handy reference manual but also to be of assistance as a training manual for use in police training schools that include lamp examination as part of their curriculum. In addition, the text will be useful and practical for investigators, forensic technicians, attorneys, insurance investigators, and judges.

Traffic Accident Investigatior Lamp Manual .......2007-01-08
A very good book to understand the different failure modes when incandescent lightsource are used in a car, excellent pictures and examples, the procedures description are in use now, on the other hand a revision must be made to update with new lightsources used in the market; like HID (High Intensive Discharge) & the use of LED in traffic accidents, color pictures are neccesary to understand some failure modes, will be nice to add in the next edition.

Book Description
Plastics possess properties that have revolutionized the manufacture of products in the 20th century and beyond. It remains crucial to understand their behavior throughout their life cycle, from manufacture to use and eventually to reclamation and disposal. The Handbook of Plastics Analysis highlights the most prominent tools in physical and chemical analysis techniques and applications, providing guidelines on analysis and interpretation of results. A practical reference for performing measurements, solving problems, and investigating behavioral phenomena, the editors advocate a phenomenological approach, relying on case studies and illustrations to reperesent possible outcomes of each technique but presenting the basic governing equations where necessary.

Customer Reviews:
Not advanced and back-dated.......2004-12-02
I am a RNA-chemist and I bought this book from amazon.com to get help for my day-to-day research. The moment I had my first glance at this book I was frustrated. This book has described fairly old methods but no contemporary techniques. This book is not even descrided the techniques in an advanced manner which is expected for a book based on so specific field. I would not recommend this book to anyone who has atleast the basic working knowledge of molecular biology.
great methods book.......2000-05-16
This book is exactly what it claims to be--a laboratory guide. It provides methods that are clear, but also explains the reasons for the methods. For example: when is an RNA probe better than a DNA probe and why; when nonisotopic labels can be used effectively. Although there is not a chapter on in situ hybridization, I found the section on probes very helpful. There is also a handy glossary at the end and a primer on RNA at the beginning of the book. Dr Farrell realizes the reader maybe new to the field and so doesn't leave out the basics. However, I believe this book will be helpful to all but the most knowledgable molecular biolgists.

Book Description
A genome revolution is transforming biomedical research in the leading laboratories. Now, a series of manuals from Cold Spring Harbor puts the tools of the revolution in everyone's hands.
Assuming only a basic knowledge of molecular biology, these manuals explain how to clone, manipulate, analyze, and sequence large segments of DNA, and relate expressed sequence to phenotypic variation.
The techniques are written for application to animal DNA as well as human genomes. They deal plainly with sources of failure - and solutions. Assembled by experienced CSH course instructors, the protocols are written by experts, often the methods' creators, and have been rigorously edited to Cold Spring Harbor standards of accuracy, consistency, and completeness.
A complement to the bible of recombinant DNA, Molecular Cloning, these manuals are essential for every laboratory in which genes are being studied.
