Book Description

Exploring Animal Behavior in Laboratory and Field is designed to provide a variety of exercises that engage students actively in all phases of scientific investigation, from formulating research questions through interpreting and presenting final results. It attempts to share the collective teaching expertise and experience of members of the Animal Behavior Society with all who are willing to benefit from their wisdom. Four types of exercises are presented: (1) traditional exercises in which students follow a pre-determined protocol to test particular hypotheses explicitly stated in the exercise, (2) traditional exercises that can easily be adapted to inquiry-based approaches, (3) combined pedagogy exercises that involve both traditional and inquiry approaches, and (4) inquiry exercises in which students first brainstorm to generate their own hypotheses, then design their own experiements to test their hypotheses.

* Supports a range of pedagogical styles and texts in animal behavior with active learning experiences that engage students
* Students and instructors benefit from knowledge and experience of members of the Animal Behavior Society
* Flexibility of design enables students and instrucotrs to tailor the exercises to their needs
* Can be used to support lab courses that are completely inquiry based as well as independent student research projects in animal behavior
* Consideration of animal care guidelines provides an excellent way to address and discuss concerns about the use of animals in teaching and research
* Emphasizes the hypothetico-deductive approach that students have difficulty understanding and implementing
* Supporting materials make additional required texts unnecessary and link study design considerations with real studies

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for those teaching behavior labs.......2003-07-09

This is a fantastic and much-needed book. As a resource for someone setting up a laboratory course in animal behavior, this book is full of excellent ideas, and I would advise anyone to get a copy of this book. The problem with adopting it as a lab book for students is that there are over 30 labs presented here. As many are multiweek projects, the most that could reasonably be done in a semester is 7-10 labs. Anyone who has taught students knows that having them purchase a book ... for which they will only use 1/4 or 1/3 of the chapters is only inviting a tremendous amount of griping. This is my only complaint with this book, which the publisher was pushing as a lab manual for students, instead of a resource for instructors.

5 out of 5 stars An assemblage of studious, college-level essays.......2002-12-08

Collaboratively assembled and edited by Bonnie J. Ploger (Hamline University) and Ken Yasukawa (Beloit College), Exploring Animal Behavior In Laboratory And Field is a scholarly compendium offering a variety of diverse approaches to the development, function, and evolution of animal behavior, with contribution each being grounded in the creation and careful testing of scientific hypotheses. An assemblage of studious, college-level essays on select topics ranging from the response of tree squirrels to different types of alarm calls, to human nonverbal communications, to chemoreception in lizards, and a great deal more, Exploring Animal Behavior In Laboratory And Field would make an especially welcome addition to Zoological Studies reference collections and Wildlife Studies reading lists.

3 out of 5 stars How To Dissect.......2003-05-24

I used this book in my homeschool dissection club and found that it is a good reference tool, but lacks a thorough description of the internal anatomy. The diagrams of the internal anatomy are also very vague. This book is best used with online dissecton diagrams and instuctions. In a nutshell, this book came in handy every time I dissected, but only after I had a complete understanding of the internal anatomy of the specimen from other sources.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book that shows the internal anatomy in detail.......1999-05-28

I have been looking for a book about dissection for many years. Now I have found one. This book is graet. Besides have detailed discription on dissections it also has many experiment to go with the dissection. This book is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This book should be made a compulsory school text!.......1998-09-02

I am a privileged owner of the 1961 edition of this book, having bought it in a jumble sale in 1984 for a mere Singapore 70 cents (less for U.S.). Open-ended & with great science projects, this book defies obsolescence and is a must for any parent/nation committed in honing young minds into the field of experimental biology and science.

With this book, William Berman leaves a legacy which plays surrogate to any young inquiring mind wishing for the most inspiring biology teacher.

To William Berman...Thanks!

                Book Description

EXPLORING BIOLOGY IN THE LABORATORY was written for students taking introductory biology course. The manual contains twenty-four laboratory sections ranging from the basic scientific inquiry to animal biology and organ systems, thus this manual can be used for a two-part biology course. The sequence of laboratory exercises follow majority of biology textbooks. Each laboratory contains simple and meaningful exercises that teach basic concepts. Most of the supplies used in the experiments are cheap and available from scientific vendors. The laboratory exercises begin with a brief introduction of the concepts and then there are 2-3 experiments that can be completed in a two-hour lab session. At the end of each lab there are multiple choice “Review Questions”. This lab manual contains a “Lab Assignment” section at the end of each lab section that students can complete after lab experiments and turn in to their instructors as part of the lab assignment. The lab assignment section is designed to test student’s critical thinking and writing ability.

                Book Description

The third edition contains major improvements over the previous edition. In addition to updated references, each reaction is now supplemented with two to three representative examples in synthesis to showcase its synthetic utility. Biographical sketches for the chemists who discovered or developed those name reactions have been included. Furthemore, the subject index is significantly expanded.

Different from other books on name reactions in organic chemistry, Name Reactions, A Collection of Detailed Reaction Mechanisms focuses on their mechanisms. It covers over 300 classical as well as contemporary name reactions. Each reaction is delineated by its detailed step-by-step, electron-pushing mechanism, supplemented with the original and the latest references, especially review articles. Thus, it is not only an indispensable resource for senior undergraduate and graduate students for learning and exams, but also a good reference book for all chemists interested in name reactions.

Some praise for the previous edition:

"This is an excellent book for arrow pushing and learning organic name reactions as encountered in graduate school . . . Li’s book contains reactions of all mechanistic classes . . . The book is nicely balanced, containing modern-day reactions for assembly of stereocomplex molecules. Reactions such as the Corey-Bakshi-Shibata reduction are analyzed. This book is a good reference text that fills a void that has existed for some time. It is both an excellent tool for learning and a good reference source."

                Journal of Chemical Education

                5 out of 5 stars Awesome book.......2007-05-10

This book is nice for writing the basics of mechanism. There are some other books available in market. But I will recommend this book because they are short and concise. This third edition is more or less similar to second edition.

5 out of 5 stars best name reactions book.......2006-03-23

this book is a really great resource for organic chemists. it has all the main name reactions in alphabetical order, and does a good job showing not only the overall reaction, but also the step-by-step mechanism as well. it also has references listed for each reaction, for further clarification. i recommend it for any organic chemist as part of their library.

5 out of 5 stars The named reactions bible.......2005-08-16

This book is fantastic! It has a complete set of every important named reaction with its respective mechanism and literature references. The simple layout makes this book very user friendly. The mechanisms are easy to follow and the references are very useful making this book excellent for use at any level from undergraduate to graduate and beyond. This book is a definite must have for anyone studying advanced organic chemistry, as it is the named reactions bible.

2 out of 5 stars not bad if you can't write a mechanism..........2005-08-06

Basically, all this book does is draw mechanisms for a whole bunch of name reactions. It doesn't really tell you all that much and only gives one example (for which the mechanism is drawn out)or each. Definately not recomended if you know how to push arrows and write a mechanism. Not at all what I was expecting.

5 out of 5 stars A excellent collection of important Name Reactions.......2004-04-10

This book is a must for any undergrad, graduate student or for that matter, CHEMIST, at any level who is interested in Name Reactions. It contains 331 name reactions that range from classic organic chemistry to modern day organic chemistry. An excellent collection of important name reactions that is in an easy to read format. Each reaction contains a brief summary, a general reaction scheme and a detailed arrow pushing mechanism.

I really like this book because of its contents and simplicity. Its very easy to find the reaction you are looking for and the information is complete. It would be very helpful in studying for advance organic chemistry exams or as a quick reference when you do not know a particular named reaction. The index is about average for this type of book; however, this book is based on the fact that you are looking up named reactions and not using it as a functional group conversion reference.

After all is said and done, I can truly say that I am glad I purchased this book. It is a complete summary of named reactions and I look forward to using it in the years to come.

                Thanks

                    Book Description

Organic Reaction Mechanisms shows readers how to interpret the experimental data obtained from an organic reaction, and specifically how an organic reaction mechanism can be considered or rejected based on the analysis of the experimental evidence. Examining a series of selected examples of mechanisms, Organic Reaction Mechanisms focuses on real cases and discusses them in detail, following the same methodology: introduction, experimental data and discussion. The examples are arranged to elucidate key aspects of organic reaction mechanisms. The authors employ all the types of information that the authors of the original work considered useful and necessary, including kinetic and thermodynamic data, isotopic labelling and organic reactivity. The book makes an excellent primer for advanced undergraduates in chemistry who are preparing for exams and is also useful for graduate students and instructors.

                      Book Description

This book is intended as a chemistry text for a one-semester course on inorganic reaction mechanisms at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level. Introductory chapters concentrate on the collection and interpretation of kinetic data. The chapter on substitution reactions begins with the
Langford and Gray classification system and focuses on a sensible approach to mechanistic discussions. Current experimental and theoretical information on solvent exchange reactions is emphasized for substitution on labile systems. Standard stereochemical change processes are discussed, along with a
simplified approach to symmetry rules for fluxional organometallic systems. The area of organometallic reactions attempts to bring together and generalize the current work on a variety of common reactions in this area, including C-H activation and a selection of catalytic processes. Electron
transfer reactions are discussed in terms of current modifications of Marcus' theory and ideas about bridging ligand effects, including intravalence electron transfer. In inorganic photochemistry, the general factors affecting quantum yields are discussed, with applications to cobalt (III), chromium
(III) and rhodium (III) systems, along with flash photolysis and matrix isolation studies in organometallic photochemistry. Selected bioinorganic systems are discussed in detail. The text includes over 500 references to original literature through 1990, and sample problems for each chapter.

                        Book Description

This thoroughly revised and updated edition of one of the classics of kinetics text books continues the successful concept of the 1974 edition: In its first part, a simplified approach to the determination of rate laws and mechnisms is given steadily working up to complex situations. In the following chapters the principles developed there are extensively used in a comprehensive account of reactions of transition metal complexes, including reactions of biological signifacance.

The text is illustrated by numerous figures and tables. Points of further interest are highlighted in special insets. 140 problems, taken from the original literature, enable the student to apply and deepen his newly acquired knowledge and make the book highly useful for courses in inorganic and organometallic reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, a wealth of over 1700 references renders it an indispensable work for the active researcher.
