    Book Description

Written by two of the field's foremost researchers, this comprehensive learning resource presents the biological principles that underlie modern microgbiological treatment technologies designed to improve environmental quality. The first half is focused on the principles, the tools for describing the stoichiometry and energetics of microbial reactions, and for the proper application of kinetics. The second half features applications--with many example problems--to take readers through the procedures to understand how microbial systems work and to design a treatment process.

        Book Description

Microbes are in our midst soon after birth. Thankfully, the number of harmless (and often beneficial) microbes far out number those that would do us harm. Our ability to ward-off pathogens in our environment, including those that can colonize our exterior and/or interior surfaces, depends on the integrative action of the innate and adaptive immunity systems. This volume of CTMI, entitled Antimicrobial Peptides and Human Disease, is dedicated to the role of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in the innate host defense system of homo sapiens.

          Download Description

Human tissues often support large, complex microbial communities growing as biofilms that can cause a variety of infections. Due to an increased use of implanted medical devices, the incidence of these biofilm-associated diseases is increasing: the non-shedding surfaces of these devices provide ideal substrata for colonization by biofilm-forming microbes. The consequences of this mode of growth are far-reaching. As microbes in biofilms exhibit increased tolerance towards anti-microbial agents and decreased susceptibility to host defense systems, biofilm-associated diseases are becoming increasingly difficult to treat. Not surprisingly, therefore, interest in biofilms has increased dramatically in recent years. The application of new microscopic and molecular techniques has revolutionized our understanding of biofilm structure, composition, organization and activities, resulting in important advances in the prevention and treatment of biofilm-related diseases. The purpose of this book is to bring these advances to the attention of clinicians and medical researchers.

              Book Description

The history of natural sciences demonstrates that major advances in the understanding of natural processes follow the development of relevant tools. The progress of biofilm research is no different. While individual areas have mushroomed in recent years, difficulties in reproducing results, communicating new findings, and reconciling differences in conceptual versus mathematical advances are holding back the true growth of the field. Fundamentals of Biofilm Research offers a system of compatible tools and measurements that can be used to conduct biofilm studies and consistently interpret their results. After extensive testing and refinement in labs and classrooms over twenty years, the authors introduce a coherent system of conceptual, physical, computational, and virtual tools to help achieve reproducible results, align research specific parameters, ease difficulties in communication among disparate arenas, and implement consistent and reproducible procedures to interpret meaningful results. The authors reconcile the inability of computational methods to account for conceptual variables with the use of the stratified biofilm model. In this way researchers can combine the results of various measurements conducted within the space occupied by the biofilm. In addition to the wealth of information provided in the book, the authors also provide a CD with several software packages including extracting numerical parameters, computing nutrient concentration, calculating biokinetic parameters, controlling micropositioners, and measuring chemical concentration using microelectrodes. Emphasizing process analysis, engineering systems, biofilm applications, and mathematical modeling, Fundamentals of Biofilm Research provides the tools to synergize and unify research and advance biofilm research as a whole.

This textbook on biofilms combines knowledge on sub-aquatic and sub-aerial biofilms and their products (stromatolites, oolites, ore, petroleum and gas deposits). It describes how formation and degradation of minerals and rocks is achieved through biofilm formation on and in sediments, soils and rocks. Methods of study, examples of Precambrian biofilms of an early Earth as well as the most recent examples of desert rock biofilms are treated in this integrative book on biofilms, microbial mats and stromatolites.

                      Book Description

Pyrolysis is a recycling technique converting plastic waste into fuels, monomers, or other valuable materials by thermal and catalytic cracking processes. It allows the treatment of mixed, unwashed plastic wastes. For many years research has been carried out on thermally converting waste plastics into useful hydrocarbons liquids such as crude oil and diesel fuel. Recently the technology has matured to the point where commercial plants are now available. Pyrolysis recycling of mixed waste plastics into generator and transportation fuels is seen as the answer for recovering value from unwashed, mixed plastics and achieving their desired diversion from landfill.

This book provides an overview of the science and technology of pyrolysis of waste plastics. It describes the types of plastics that are suitable for pyrolysis recycling, the mechanism of pyrolytic degradation of various plastics, characterization of the pyrolysis products and details of commercially mature pyrolysis technologies. This book also covers co-pyrolysis technology, including: waste plastic/waste oil, waste plastics/coal, and waste plastics/rubber.
