4 out of 5 stars This book amazed me twice........2003-02-07

I found this book extraordinarily helpful in my medical school.
This book amazed me again when I found that the author has another embryology text book with additions of miracles about embryology mentioned in the Islamic text 1400 years ago, visit http://islamicbookstore.com/b6147.html.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2002-06-06

I absolutely agree with Michelle Lee (one of the reviewers above) that it is essential to SEE what is happening when you study Embryology. This book does a great job in that sense and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars As a medical student.......2002-02-11

In bried to say that the book is not only well written and presented it also makes the subject very easy to understand.

Used it for my anatomy and pathophysiology lectures. A very good book indead for someone who has just started studying the subject.

4 out of 5 stars The best way to learn embryology..........2002-01-12

This book had the BEST pictures. In fact, just this year our veterinary school switched the required text from Langman's Medical Embryology (a very human-centered book) to Before We Are Born.

I think the best way to learn about how the embryo develops is to actually see things happening...a professor can say "then the dermatomes extend out from the somites..." but it really doesn't mean much unless you can SEE it. Before We Are Born really does this well, taking a step-by-step approach to learning the processes of developmental biology. The illustrations are clear, and they try to make them as 3-D looking as possible.

If you're taking a developmental biology or embryology course, you NEED this book!

3 out of 5 stars Too many terms!.......2000-07-31

Keith Moore and Vid Persaud have tried to put together a simplified edition of their seminal book, The Developing Human: Clinically Oriented Embryology. Unfortunately, this embryology text misses the mark. There are too many terms and concepts for a non-medical student to learn. This book should be pruned down and be concentrated on a fewer number of concepts. Also, embryological concepts are extremely difficult to learn and a CD-ROM showing animations of the various aspects of the developing embryo would be much more useful. The authors have done extremely well with the illustrations and clinically related pictures. In conclusion, if you must use this text, put together a list of terms from the book and then try to learn the many concepts elucidated.

4 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the other reviewer putting this book down! .......2004-09-26

Hi- I am a Mom of three children and I picked up this book at a baby consignment store because I thought it covered a good subject---babies. I was trying to figure out how to explain to my girls (when my son was in my tummy) what a baby looks like and how one is formed. Hence, this book came in and explained a lot of things! I gave it four stars because there was a lot of talk, especially questions that seemed too advanced for younger children to understand. My girls were simply happy to look at the pictures. I also have "A child is born" by Lennart Nilsson which I thought is a great supplement to this book.

As for the other reviewer putting down "religious views" of this book. This reviewer is wrong. We as Christians embrace murderers, thieves, and other sinners because we love them as humans and are aware sin is just ruling their lives and most of them don't know any better or truly understand the Gospel of Christ. The religious extremists (who brag they are Christians) that are mean and pick on abortionists, doctors, thieves, etc. and others are NOT saved themselves! How can you show the love of Christ if you act ill mannered towards others? Our goals as Christians is to show love towards others so others may learn about the love of Christ.

Anyway, enjoy this book with your children! I haven't found any other like this on the market. Just be careful because it is very wordy for young children but you can simplify it for them. It is fine for 10-13 year olds as is. God Bless! Julie Ann

5 out of 5 stars A great resource.......2004-09-24

This is the best book on this subject I've ever seen. It was a wonderful tool that we used to explain the "birds and the bees" to our 10-year-old. She loved it and never felt uncomfortable. We took our time and worked at her pace.

It's great to have resource that respects the morals and attitudes of those of us with Judeo-Christian world views.

1 out of 5 stars More religous nonsense.......2003-10-03

All this book talks about is how abortion is bad because it's written by one of the christian zealots. They embrace murderers, rapists, yet if a woman poses in Playboy or a doctor performs a LEGAL abortion and is only doing his job he/she is condemned to hell. These people are just as bad as all the extremist of the world

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......1999-02-18

Easy-to-read style; presents a lot of information and answers a lot of questions. Great artwork. Very age-appropriate and does not invade child's innocense.

5 out of 5 stars Great for reading with your young children!!.......1998-12-14

Helps parents talk to their kids about were babies come from, birth defects, etc! A must for families!

I had the honor and privilege of having professor Dye for cell biology, embryology, and developmental biology at Western Connecticut State University. Throughout this book and also my personal experience in taking his courses, the constant underlying theme of his true love for biologic life is beautifully seen. Professor Dye taught his classes with a passion not seen to often in today's climate of higher education. His classes were more demanding than most, but in the end the reward by far exceeded your expectations. For anyone not fortunate enough to experience the pleasure of professor Dye in person, I heartily recommend his written works.

          * How does the fetus start the birth process?

          * Why does the fetus make breathing movements?

          * What are the functions of the placenta, our only true throw-away organ?

          * How does maternal lifestyle affect the fetus?

          * How does the fetus tell the time?

4 out of 5 stars OK, but repetitive.......2001-04-30

This book provides a readable, and reasonably good, overview of fetal development, with a scientific perspective. The downside is that I found the second half to be quite repetitive, and the author harps on, pushing his research agenda.

5 out of 5 stars Provides wonderful insights into human development.......1999-02-20

Nathanielsz presents information regarding our understanding of fetal development in a way we all can relate to. I recommend this book, as well as his latest title (Life in the Womb), to all those interested in what happens during the first nine months of life.

              Book Description

Hardly a day passes without newspaper coverage of some new development regarding prenatal life. The abortion debate continues to rage, but other examples abound: forced Caesareans; prosecutions of women for drug use during pregnancy; fetal protection policies; the use of fetal tissue for transplantation; embryo research; and the disposition of frozen embryos. All of these issues raise the question of the moral status of the unborn: are embryos and fetuses part of the pregnant woman or are they persons? Are they sources of tissue, research tools, or are they pre-born children? Different conceptions of the unborn prevail in different contexts, giving rise to the charge of inconsistency. For example, women have been criminally charged with abusing their fetuses by using drugs during pregnancy, even though abortion--which pro-lifers call the ultimate child abuse--is legal. The legalization of abortion itself was based in part on the unborn's never having been recognized in law as a full legal person. Yet fetuses have been considered as persons for the purposes of insurance coverage, wrongful death suits, and vehicular homicide. This book provides a framework for thinking clearly and coherently about the unborn. The first chapter elaborates the book's basic idea, that all and only beings who have interests have moral standing, and only beings who possess conscious awareness have interests. This thesis, which is called "the interest view," raises issues of considerable philosophical complexity, but is presented in language non-philosophers will be able to understand. Subsequent chapters apply the interest view, and explore the moral and legal aspects of a wide range of issues, including abortion, the legal status of the fetus outside abortion, maternal-fetal conflict, fetal research, and the use and disposition of extracorporeal embryos resulting from the new reproductive technologies. The philosophical discussion is enlivened by examples and actual cases which immediately catch, and sustain, the reader's interest. Written in a lively style, Life Before Birth: The Moral and Legal Status of Embryos and Fetuses is a timely and important work that enables us to resolve contradictions in our current thinking about the unborn, and to approach new issues in a clear and rational manner.

From the supplier: Frozen food consumption among European countries grew in 1992, with France showing highest growth. The total consumption topped 8 million tons for the first time, with each person consuming on the average, 23 kilograms. Comparisons among countries were difficult, because of statistical changes in the UK and France. However, the overall growth was set at about 5%. Among the countries, only Finland, Norway and Switzerland showed a decline in consumption. A detailed country-by-country report is presented.
