Book Description

The Miami estate of Vizcaya, like its palatial contemporaries Biltmore and San Simeon, represents an achievement of the Gilded Age, when country houses and their gardens were a conspicuous measure of personal wealth and power.

In Vizcaya: An American Villa and Its Makers, a celebrated architecture critic and writer and an award-winning landscape architect explore the little-known story of Vizcaya, an extraordinary national treasure. Witold Rybczynski and Laurie Olin use a rich collection of illustrations, historic photographs, and narrative to document the creation of this stunning house and landscape. Vizcaya was completed in 1916 as the winter retreat of Chicago industrialist James Deering. The cosmopolitan bachelor, who chose Miami for its warm climate, enlisted the guidance of artist Paul Chalfin, with whom he traveled throughout Italy to survey houses and gardens. With the assistance of architect F. Burrall Hoffman, Jr., and garden designer Diego Suarez, the 180-acre site on Biscayne Bay was transformed into a grand estate, complete with lagoons, canals, citrus groves, a farm village, a yacht harbor, and a 40-room Baroque mansion.

The lure of this architectural and landscape masterpiece, named for a Spanish Basque province, is undeniable. John Singer Sargent planned a short visit in 1917 but stayed for several months, producing an inspired series of watercolors, many of which are reproduced here for the first time. The book is further enriched by archival material and by the color images of noted photographer Steven Brooke, paying homage to Vizcaya as a lens through which readers learn about architecture, landscape and garden design, interior decoration, and art.

Witold Rybczynski is the Martin and Margy Meyerson Professor of Urbanism at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of many books, including the award-winning biography of Frederick Law Olmsted, A Clearing in the Distance, and the best-selling Home: A Short History of an Idea. He has written on architecture and urbanism for the New York Times, New Yorker, Slate, and New York Review of Books.

Laurie Olin is Practice Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and Principal of the Olin Partnership, a landscape architecture firm in Philadelphia. He is the author of Across the Open Field: Essays Drawn from English Landscapes and a coauthor of La Foce: A Garden and Landscape in Tuscany, both published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Vizcaya, by Rybczynski and Olin .......2007-09-20

This book by two architects that is the story of Vizcaya, the James Deering Estate built in the early twentieth century in Miami as the lavish and sumptuous expression of the great wealth of its tractor-manufacturer owner, is an exceptionally first-class literary production from every point of view that could have a bearing on its subject. Written in the technically precise phraseologies appropriate to architecture and interior decoration, its prose is free of and stands above the contamination that abounds in the otherwise usual debasement of modern literature, and it is illustrated with a landslide of stunningly magnificent photography in both color and black-and-white. But something else with which it is illustrated is what recommended this book to me. I am neither an architect nor an interior decorator, nor has the stuff of those callings ever engaged much of my attention, but as soon as my eye fell on the watercolors painted of Vizcaya by John Singer Sargent when he was a guest of Deering's there in 1917, while I turned the leaves of a friend's copy of the book, I knew immediately as one with a profound attachment to watercolor painting that I must own this book for myself. For although I have held perhaps a hundred Sargent watercolors in my hands in the Metropolitan, Brooklyn and Boston Museums, and seen many more besides in other books, I had never before seen these, as they have lain quietly in private collections without ever being published to my knowledge until now, and they are among the finest examples of Sargent's amazing wizardry in this medium, which defies belief that a human being could have painted them. And the rest of the book is a plus even for one not particularly attracted to matters of residential design or interior décor, for it is a record of an era of refinement, gentility and taste, a belle époque in American history that is gone.

5 out of 5 stars Very strongly recommended.......2007-02-03

An impressive architectural achievement of the Gilded Age when country manors and their gardens were a conspicuous documentation of personal wealth and power by their owners, the Miami estate of Vizcaya was the equal to such famous contemporary structures as the Bilmore and the San Simeon. The collaborative work of Witold Rybczynski (Martin and Margy Meyerson Professor of Urbanism, University of Pennsylvania) and Laurie Olin (Practice Professor of Landscape Architecture, University of Pennsylvania), Vizcaya: An American Villa And Its Makers" is the complete story of how this magnificent building came to be constructed, landscaped, and utilized as a 180-acre estate on Biscayne Bay complete with lagoons, canals, citrus groves, a farm village, a yacht harbor, and a 40-room Baroque mansion. Enhanced with a wealth of seventy color and 96 b/w illustrations, "Vizcaya" is an informed and informative body of impeccable scholarship presenting a seminal study that is very strongly recommended as an addition to professional, academic, and community library American Architectural History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Miami Houses is a beautifully produced and copiously illustrated tour of residential design by renowned architects such as Ramon Pacheco, Pablo Uribe, Barry Sugarman, Alain Schuhmann, and Santiago Bernal. The dazzling re-designs of houses in the landmark Art Deco District and the distinctive Latin-inspired interior design on view here have succeeded in making innovation the hallmark of Miami style. Book Description

Hours before he is due to set off on a long-delayed and much-deserved vacation with his wife and son, Det.-Sgt. Malcolm Ainslie takes a phone call he would have been better off ignoring. The caller is the chaplain at Florida State Prison, delivering a message from Elroy Doil, the serial murderer Ainslie helped put on the prison's death row. On the eve of his execution, Doil has asked to make a confession. But there is a condition: he will deliver it only in person to Ainslie.

Ainslie has no choice. Doil was convicted of a double murder, but he was suspected in ten more. No homicide detective could turn down the opportunity to close ten murder cases in a single night. What Ainslie learns from the condemned man, however, propels the ex-priest-turned-cop into an investigation that reaches into the most elite levels of his own department and the Miami city government. And it tests as never before his skills as a cop and his character as a man.

Master storyteller Arthur Hailey is legendary for the scrupulously researched authenticity and electrifying realism of his novels, for taking readers inside the places where men and women endure and sometimes crack under the pressures of jobs that shape our lives and world. Bristling with the sights, sounds, and true-to-life details of a contemporary urban homicide division, and with all the narrative suspense that has made him one of the best-selling fiction writers of our time, Detective is the novel Arthur Hailey was destined to write.

2 out of 5 stars Extremely Dull and boring.......2006-09-01

This is my first Arthur Hailey book and I doubt that I'll be reading any more if this is representive of his body of work. I gave it 2 stars only because of the police procedural research. To read good detective fiction turn to Lawrence Block, Dennis Lehane, Raymond Chandler etc.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Writing.......2006-03-02

Arthur Hailey is undoubtedly a skillful writer.
His characters are well developed and complex, and the storyline is engrossing.
At last, a book that didn't leave me feeling disapointed or thinking " Yeah, RIGHT " in the end.
Overall, one of the best detective novels I've ever read.

        5 out of 5 stars Detective ( A Must Read!!! ).......2005-07-05

From the time I picked up this book, I have been holding it till the last page was read. Arthur Hailey has a great way with words. He shows the two sides of a hero the intellect and the lust. The book shows how depraved men can get, and how the most respected people can be the most criminally inclined individuals. A breath-taking thriller indeed!

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst books ever!.......2004-07-17

This is one of the worst books I've ever read, and I've read some bad ones! I knew who the killers were even before the serial killer was executed; and for that I'm thankful because the writing style of Hailey is clunky, and his sentences are (for the most part) poorly constructed or plain dull. I found the whole idea of the protagonist being an ex-priest to be a gratuitous vessal for Hailey's anti-Christian/liberal beliefs. Maybe his police research was commendable, but his theological research was seemingly nonexistent. The questions that caused the priest to "lose his faith" are so transparent that a first year theology student would blow them out of the water, much less a PHD.
I'm all for differing points of view, but only as long as they are cogent and sensical. Neither is found here.
The only good thing about this book is that I got it at the library and get to give it back!

        5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2004-03-02

I was really drawn into this book. I like the dynamics of the characters. I really liked how the main character went on a spritiual as well as a personal journey to discover his convictions. However, I really felt bad for the Commander having to endure her Fathers foul behavior and not even her Mother stand up for her. I agree with reviewer who stated that this book is not an attack on christianity or catholicism. This character simply lost his faith and had a find it again.

In brilliant color, Miami: Hot and Cool pays tribute to the diverse and distinctive architecture of this city of contrasts. Blending the exotic with the suburban, the historic with the up-to-the-minute, the deceptively humble with the ultra-extravagant, Miami is an amalgam of classic Art Deco, sleek modernity, tropical lushness, and palatial elegance. The warm tints and cool stonework of the Mediterranean tradition are a natural fit with Miami's climate, as evidenced by the Italianate splendor of Villa Vizcaya or the more modest but nevertheless stylish bungalows of Coconut Grove. Everywhere the colors shine in electric-hued walls, bright pottery, mosaic tiles, lush vegetation. Boasting more than 400 photos of more than two dozen homes, this volume also provides a mini-lesson on the cultural history of a unique city. --Amy Handy

        Book Description

Miami is an original, a city that celebrates its good looks, flaunts its vices, and exhibits its wealth of sensual pleasures. This survey of Miami's diverse designs for homes and gardens shows the rest of America how to take the heat with an up-to-the-minute, sizzling lifestyle. With more than 400 full-color photographs, Miami: Hot & Cool perfectly captures the essence of staying cool in the Miami sun--or shade.

I purchased this book when in graduate school in Chicago, Ill. Along with Caribbean Style, which is by another publisher and still in print, this book offers beautiful color photos of the real Miami "style". If you are looking for the tropical look this book is an excellent reference as well as the variety of architectural styles prevelant in Miami. It is also a nice reminder of the residential lifestyle of Miami not often seen by the tourist. Along with Caribbean Style, this book ranks high on my list as a book I keep pulling off my book shelf.

It's hard to say what's most important about The Message of St. Francis--St. Francis's words of wisdom; illustrations of scenes from his life; or the elegant, nearly indestructible paper it's printed on. Sister Nan, a member of the Community of St. Francis in London, has selected passages from St. Francis's writings and from his biographies, which are illustrated with photographs of Giotto's frescoes of St. Francis's life in the Basilica at Assisi.

The book would make a fine introduction to St. Francis for young people, an excellent devotional for adults, or a treasured gift for just about anyone who is serious about seeking wisdom and enjoying beauty in life. Many of the excerpts from St. Francis's writings included here will be familiar to readers who have even superficial knowledge of his life. Others, such as "A Signature in the Air," from Murray Bodo's The Journey and the Dream, have the power of fresh revelation. In this passage, St. Francis is watching little lizards running across the walls of the Basilica.

"It was their movement that fascinated him. Their motion was a pattern scribbled in the air which disappeared as soon as it was made. There was no permanence in these tiny signatures, no monument to themselves left behind. That is what he wanted to be: a tiny signature in the air that thrilled someone who saw it, but was as anonymous as a lizard's zigzagged darting on a pink Assisi wall. His movement would be his poem."
                --Michael Joseph Gross

                Book Description

St. Francis was great in the thirteenth century, but we can say that he has become even more important since," said Pope John Paul II on a 1993 visit to the saint's tomb at Assisi, in Umbria. Only four years later, in that very place of pilgrimage, a devastating earthquake rocked the Basilica of St. Francis, utterly damaging the structure and destroying some of the decorations. Giotto's famous twenty-eight frescoes of St. Francis's life miraculously escaped with only minor damage. In The Message of St. Francis stunning images and details from this fresco cycle illuminate the defining moments of the great saint's life: from his worldly beginnings as a dashing scion of privileged society to his embrace of poverty, simplicity, and humility. Extracts from biographies, ancient and modern, and his own writings--from canticles of praise to spare, incisive admonitions on the gifts of the spirit--convey the heart of his beliefs. Here we see the patron saint of animals and the natural world; the man who has emerged in our times as a major spiritual figure and a symbol of peace, love, and religious diversity--as depicted by Giotto, the "father of the Renaissance." The frescoes are printed on uncoated, textured paper reflecting the rich surface of the original frescoes themselves. In the tradition of Vision, this is an exquisite giftbook for art lovers and for Christians and seekers of every stripe--for Easter, First Communions, and all spiritual occasions.

When an earthquake shook the town of Assisi on September 26, l997, it destroyed three sections of the vault in the 800-year-old Basilica of St. Francis. Although many of the contents were lost, such as the frescoes of St. Jerome and St. Matthew, this book preserves the whole interior, both in clear, sensitively-arranged color photographs and in an extensive text by the eloquent Angiola Romanini, the University of Rome art historian. The Basilica of St. Francis is a treasure trove of paintings by Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti, Cimabue, Giotto, and others. The "birthplace of a new age in painting and in European art," the frescoes demonstrate the shift from the flattened, stylized figures of the Byzantine late Middle Ages to the three-dimensional, individualized pictures of men and women that signal the beginning of the Renaissance. Romanini's text is scholarly and complete, with footnotes in the accepted academic style, but her passion comes through in her prose. She describes Cimabue's frescoes as "a scene change that wipes the northern tradition off the stage, as though it were an irretrievably finished age."

The Basilica's sense of peace, much remarked on by visitors for centuries, was shattered by the fallen sections of its vault. But the church of the gentle saint, pictured with his congregation of attentive birds, is still largely intact. This is not a book for the casual tourist, but it may inspire a few art lovers to make it the centerpiece of their next pilgrimage to Italy. --Peggy Moorman

                  Book Description

During the eight hundred years since its founding, the Basilica of St. Francis has survived twenty-three recorded earthquakes. None, however, was as devastating as the most recent in September 1997. This important volume offers an incomparable opportunity to see the entire Basilica of St. Francis, including the frescoes of St. Jerome and St. Matthew, which were lost forever when they fell from the nave of the church.

The basilica is shown in all its glory. Precious close-up photographs of the frescoes are accompanied by general views of both the upper and lower church, showing the soaring Romanesque architecture, the intricately patterned painted ribs of the arches, the altar and wooden stalls, and the incredible stained glass windows. The frescoes of the Basilica of St. Francis are masterpieces of the very early Renaissance, still influenced by the distinctive perspective and flatness of the Gothic. The text relates the story of the painting of the church--the events depicted by the frescoes themselves, and the progress of work by painters under the tutelage of Cimabue and Giotto, some of whose hands are discernable in individual masterpieces, such as the fresco of Isaac.

The Basilica of St. Francis will be restored, but it will never again be as complete as before the tragedy of nature that claimed an important part of art history and Italian culture. Assisi is an important document of our cultural heritage.
