Understanding the Light Microscope: A Computer-Aided Introduction (With CD-ROM)
D. J. Goldstein Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0122886607 |
Book Description
Understanding the Light Microscope consists of four original computer programs with an explanatory book. Author Dan Goldstein says using the programs can teach aspects of microscopy and diffraction often missed from formal courses, adding, "... what one non-mathematician has created should not be beyond the understanding of others!" The book aims to provide understanding at a level deeper than customary in existing texts and in a form accessible to microscope users, particularly biologists. It covers simple ray optics, the aberrations of "real" (thick) lenses, polarized light, and the influence of diffraction on imaging. The book can be read alone, but appreciation of its contents is greatly enhanced when used in conjunction with the programs.

Introduction to Light Microscopy (Microscopy Handbooks)
Mrs H Bradbury Manufacturer: Garland Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1859961215 |
Book Description
This is an introductory book on the light microscope, in the outstanding tradition of the Royal Microscopical Society. It begins with a consideration of the interactions of light with matter and the use of the stereo low-power microscope. Subsequent chapters describe the high-power compound microscope, describing both the older stand with separate lamp as well as the later research models with integral illumination and infinity-corrected optics. Other chapters cover the basic optics of the instrument, together with a description of the different types of condensers, objectives and eye pieces. The final chapter is devoted to the correct use of the microscope (so as to obtain the best possible image) and caring for the instrument. It contains a check list to help in diagnosing and curing troubles and dissatisfaction with the image, as well as a glossary and list of further reading.

Introduction to Optical Mineralogy
William D. Nesse Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195060245 |
Book Description
This is an ideal textbook for both advanced undergraduates and graduate students. It contains valuable coverage of the optical properties of minerals, as well as up-to-date descriptions of common rock-forming minerals. The chapters on optical theory include discussions of the nature and properties of light, the petrographic microscope, and the behavior of light in isotropic materials and in uniaxial and biaxial anisotropic materials. Thoroughly revised to include recent developments in the field, the book includes step-by-step procedures to guide students through the determination of all optical properties by which minerals are routinely identified with a petrographic microscope. Readers will find descriptive information on over 125 common rock forming minerals, and many photomicrographs and illustrations. The book also includes a flow sheet to guide students through the process of identifying an unknown mineral.Customer Reviews:

Great book.......1999-12-04
Good undergrad college textbook for optical mineralogy........1997-11-17
The first third of the text deals with the properties of light, the use and care of the petrographic microscope, and the optical properties of minerals and how to use these to identify mineral grains in thin sections.
Much of the text contains detailed descriptions of the commoner rock-forming minerals from the standpoint of the petrographer. Descriptive diagrams and photographs, and capitalized section headings, separated paragraphs, and all typeface (font) easy to read. Paper is quality glossy and easy to use.
Appendices include Identification Tables based upon various optical properties, tables which have proved their use to students taking the course. Also includes the standard fold-up Interference Color Chart, on quality glossy paper, and on its reverse a table of birefringence versus relief (difference in refractive index).
The author retains consideration for students, including photos of such non-minerals as may confuse the tyro, such as textile fibers, bubbles, and grinding compound, all of which get into thin sections (petrographic slides).
Excellently laid out and organized, it also contains a good Index. This text was written for college students taking petrography and optical mineralogy, and has been kept, rather than sold, even by some students who never expect to use a petrographic microscope again. College instructors take notice, as for a junior to senior level petrography course this text probably rates a 9 or a 10. [DMM]

An Introduction to Hot Laser Plasma Physics (Volume 233 in Horizons in World Physics)
A.A. Mak , and N.A. Solovyev Manufacturer: Nova Science Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Library Binding ASIN: 1560728035 |
Book Description
This book is concerned with a rapidly developing area of physics-hot laser plasma and its applications. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate university students, as well as for those working in this research area professionally. The authors' aim was to give a clear physical description of phenomena involved in the interaction between high power laser radiation and plasma. They tried to avoid cumbersome mathematical calculations but to provide the reader with a physically correct up-to-date picture of the phenomena. The presentation begins with the fundamental concepts of plasma physics, so that the reader does not have to resort to many other source books. Most of the book represents an introduction to the physics of a laser plasma and some of its applications, primarily its use for laser-induced thermonuclear fusion (inertial confine fusion - ICF). The work in this area has lately been very active, so it is premature and even impossible to present the material as a well-established knowledge. We have just tried to introduce the reader to the state of the art and essential aspects of the problem, thus facilitating a more detailed study of particular issues concerning a hot laser plasma and its applications.

Assessment of the Effects of Entrainment and Wind Shear on Nuclear Cloud Rise Modeling
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423523431 |
Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A890204. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Accurate modeling of nuclear cloud rise is critical in hazard prediction following a nuclear detonation. This thesis recommends improvements to the model currently used by DoD. It considers a single-term versus a three- term entrainment equation, the value of the entrainment and eddy viscous drag parameters, as well as the effect of wind shear in the cloud rise following a nuclear detonation. It examines departures from the 1979 version of the Department of Defense Land Fallout Interpretive Code (DELFIC) with the current code used in the Hazard Prediction and Assessment Capability (HPAC) code version 3.2. The recommendation for a single-term entrainment equation, with constant value parameters, without wind shear corrections, and without cloud oscillations is based on both a statistical analysis using 67 U.S. nuclear atmospheric test shots and the physical representation of the modeling. The statistical analysis optimized the parameter values of interest for four cases: the three-term entrainment equation with wind shear and without wind shear as well as the single-term entrainment equation with and without wind shear. The thesis then examines the effect of cloud oscillations as a significant departure in the code. Modifications to user input atmospheric tables are identified as a potential problem in the calculation of stabilized cloud dimensions in HPAC.
