Book Description
Distinguished by long, sloping gables, horizontal lines, and a continuous shingle covering on the exterior, the Shingle Style's essential objective was the creation of expanding, flowing space. The Shingle Style embodied intellectual pluralism and cultural democracyideals fundamental to American belief and developed quickly and richly. After a period of reaction against the Shingle Style, it was revitalized, finding its first fully renewed expression in 1959 in a design for a beach house by Robert Venturi. Vincent Scully details this reemergence, revealing the complex and crucial role of influence in the shaping of this movement. 134 b/w illustrations.

Reads Better Than It Looks.......2000-04-13
I bought this book a couple of years ago because my husband and I have a recurring fantasy of building a shingle style house and this was one of the few books I could find on the topic at the time. At first, I was a little intimidated by the book because it looks very dry and scholarly. Once I got over my intimidation and actually started reading, I was pleasantly surprised to find that while it is indeed scholarly, it is extremely readable and even witty. Scully manages to weave together a fascinating range of influences and expressions of shingle styles, from Italian palazzos to very modern architecture. The only reason I don't give this book a higher rating is that I wish it had color pictures and more of them, but I am probably just being peevish. The truth is, when I bought the book, I really wanted a glossy picture book but none were available (this was before the 1999 publication of "Shingle Styles"). The book's small black and white photographs will not be satisfying to someone who wants to drool over rich photographs of this gorgeous architectural style, as I did. Nonetheless, the book itself will be quite satisfying to someone who wants to immerse themselves in the history and theory of this unique American style and who is willing to exert a little brain power to do it.

NOT FOR WEEKEND GARDENERS.......2001-06-16
This magnificent book takes the reader/viewer on a magical trip to the majestic gardens of Tuscany. Divided into three distinct sections: Siena, Lucca and Florence, this is definitely not a book for getting "how to" tips on gardening in the U.S.A. These so-called gardens are perfect for imagination day dreams or movie settings. These are not your marigold and petunia gardens. Instead you will be transported to another time and another place where semi-circular pools, hillside terraces, lime and ilez shade trees, sunflower fields and espaliered vines share space with secret gardens of peach, olive and magnolia trees underplanted with crocuses, daffodills, irises, lilies and roses or box-edged flower gardens, bowling greens and fountains.
Each wonderful photograph is fully explained as to where it is and how it relates to the buildings which share the acreage and to the families who own the villas.
Not one of those cumbersome, oversized books, it is easily held and easily read. Historian, Sir Harold Acton, has written a lovely introduction and one feature that I found fascinating was a listing of the public gardens in the book, since most of the Tuscan gardens are, naturally, private. Recommended.

Book Description
Nestling in the gentle hills and brushed with the hazy sfumato of the air, the homes of Tuscany have long been the objects of lust and legend. This book affords a privileged glimpse of Tuscan houses and interiors. Leading lights of the international arts and fashion scenes open their doors and bid us enter. The range extends from the simple casa colonia, the typical farmhouse of Chianti, via the majestic palazzo of the Puccis and the magnificent villa of the Siemens family to a house designed by Ettore Sottsass.

Over the Top.......2003-09-20
This book did not provide any practical interior design ideas. If, however, you are into Tuscan, it would make a fabulous coffee table book.
Actually useful for design........2003-09-06
Unlike most interior design idea books, this book actually has a fair number of interiors that are relevant to normal size homes and rooms. I would say that about half this book is useful for homes that aren't mansions. This is unusual, because most design books only have a few plates that are relevant to anything less than a Hearst manion. Definately a buy.

La Foce: A Garden and Landscape in Tuscany.......2005-05-15
This is an excellent book. It bodes one well to have read Iris Origo's autobiography to help understand much of the background of La Foce, although Benedetta Origo does an excellent job of providing background, too. The combination of the estate's background, color photographs and sketches by the authors makes this book an excellent buy, especially if one is interested in Italian gardens and their development. Maps, too, have been included to give one a sense of location. Beautifully done.
A Garden In All Its Glory.......2001-11-19
La Foce is an attractive Tuscan villa which is presented here in text and pictures. The text offers a picture of one family's history, including interesting archival photographs and drawings. What makes this book truly spectacular, however, are Morna Livingston's photographs, presented in a beautiful layout and printed on a silky white paper which heightens the luminesence of the incredible Tuscan colors. In more than one hundred photographs Livingiston captures the villa's gardens in every light and season. There are stunning images of the broader landscape and fascinating details of both the architecture and the plants. For those who have wondered just what the attraction of Tuscany is, you will find the answer here. For those who already know, this will serve as a reminder.
Book Description
This book is not just a collection of articles on authentic, restored houses, it is primarily the of the passion of men and women who, one day in love with a ruin in Tuscany: a pieve, or parish church, with origins in the fifth century, an 11th century fortified tower, an eighteenth-century casa colonica, a castle with Etruscan origins.

Book Description
Though most often associated with the Renaissance and with the famed Uffizi and Galleria dell'Accademia, the artistic heritage of Tuscany is actually quite diverse-with Baroque and Mannerist influences as well as Renaissance-and the artistic wonders go far beyond these two renowned institutions. Hidden Tuscany explores the varied influences and unique history of the region, revealing Tuscany's hidden gems. With glorious color photography and engaging text, Hidden Tuscany brings readers to the lesser-known sites-to the gardens, villas, museums, and churches often passed by on traditional tours or in other books on the area.

Great Treasures We Don't Know in Tuscany.......2004-01-28
HIDDEN TUSCANY: UNUSUAL DESTINATIONS AND SECRET PLACES is a title that explains this beautiful book well. Even to the traveler who frequents Tuscany often there are little known but extraordinary treasures that author Cesare Cunaccia and photographer Massimo Listri unveil in a most conversational and sensitively visual display. Yes, it takes many visits to Florence, Sienna, Lucca, etc to see absolutely everything found in the art history books, most of which is in the confines of the Uffizi in Florence and even more of which is reflecting the rich Renaissance era of art. The lines just to see Michelangelo's David, for example, attest to their well-won popularity. But this book points out that there are great examples of the Romanesque architecture, of buildings and gardens that date back to the 1300s, that one of the best-kept secrets of Florence is its Silk Factory. For those art lovers who seek examples of the Mannerist Pontormo look no further than the lavishly illustrated section on his decor for the Santa Felicita. The magic found in the geometric designs that adorn San Miniato defies credibility. Listi is not a documentary photographer and that is a compliment: his photographs are bathed in light and shadow and are reproduced in this splendid volume with great respect for color value. For those not already addicted to the romance of Tuscany this volume will certainly weight the case for its preeminence in the traveler's world.
Absolutely delightful........2002-08-12
This large but not-too-thick book details a number of beautiful and little-known places in Tuscany, ranging over the entire region. This isn't actually a travel book per se -- it doesn't tell you contact information, for example, or even if these places are open to the general public. It does, however, tell you about places in Tuscany that tourists probably never ever get to, to wit: The Refuge of the White Monks at Monte Oliveto Maggiore, built in 1313, with its vaulted white halls filled with frescoes of cats and mounted archers; the lush, almost surreally beautiful gardens of Villa Garzoni in Lucca; the thousands of treasures of all sorts in the Museum of Silver in Palazzo Pitti; the Florentine Botanical Museum; the inlaid treasures of the Museo delle Pietre Dure, including shots of inlay artists at their craft; a silk factory; and many other things, probably 30 to 40 in all. The pictures are lavish and beautifully made, and the text is lyrical and pleasant on the eyes. I'd never even heard of ANY of these places, so reading this book was quite a delicious experience.
I wouldn't get this as a serious travel guide, but it piques the imagination. There may be things here you'll want to find on your next trip to Tuscany.
