    Book Description

If nothing else, the war in Iraq and the 1991 Gulf War have taught us much about media and technology as key players in how war is waged, packaged for public consumption, and exported in real time to the rest of the globe. A critic of the art of technology, Paul Virilio has keenly observed that media images quite often constitute a strategy of war and that accident is becoming indistinguishable from attack. For more than fifty years Virilio has offered incisive and provocative criticism on technology and its moral, political, and cultural implications. Yet until now, much of his work, originally published in French, remains elusive in full English translation.

The Paul Virilio Reader collects for the first time English extracts reflecting the entire range of Virilio's diverse career. The book's introduction demonstrates that Virilio has produced an important -- if controversial -- "theory at the speed of light" that uncannily illuminates the impact of new information and communications technologies in a world that collapses time and distance as never before. The inventor of "dromology," which views speed as a defining concept for contemporary civilization, Virilio is noted for his proclamation that the logic of ever-increasing acceleration lies at the heart of the organization and transformation of the contemporary world.

Arranged chronologically, the Reader illustrates the development and interconnectedness of Virilio's work. Each extract is prefaced by bibliographical and contextual commentary, and the book includes an innovative guide to reading Virilio.

        5 out of 5 stars Great.......2003-10-28

This book is more like reading an illustrated autobiography than a how to book. This is fine with me. Chamberlain is a master of the traditional British style landscape. With a limited palette of earth tones and simplified brush work he creates muted, moody landscapes that to my mind are more compelling than the brightly colored items in most watercolor instruction books. Its a matter of taste, but Chamberlain's work really speaks to me. He's more concerned with communicating the beauty of the world than his own artistic cleverness.

        5 out of 5 stars beautiful style.......2003-06-30

I like this book for the illustrations. Chamberlain has a fresh spontaneous style and draws well. The paintings illustrated are representational, easy to like, well composed and very attractive. I haven't paid much attention to the text...no criticism, I'm just burnt out long ago on how-to painting books. But this is worth while for the quality of the paintings.

        5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring.......2002-01-08

This is an awesome book. It has inspired me to paint on-site more and has given me some invaluable additions to my palette. His style is attractive to me because it's more masculine and similar to my own. His narrative is very inspirational and instructive. Reading it and viewing his work will get you out painting every time.

5 out of 5 stars An enormously attractive plein-aire painter........1999-11-02

Trevor Chamberlain is one of the most authentic outdoor painters working today. He is a "painter's painter," and anyone who has ever picked up a brush wishes in his or her heart of hearts that Chamberlain's style could be his or her own. His books make this dream almost seem a reality.

This manual, based on lectures of Frank J. Reilly and art teaching experience of the author at County College of Morris. It covers the fundamental concepts of form, planes, and light-and shade that are also applied to the structural understanding of the human figure and head. Analysis of the Munsell Color Theory, color mixes and their application to figure, portrait, and landscape painting is given in the second part of this manual. The stress on craftsmanship and practice, based on knowledge of principles, structural concepts, and color orientation related to painting techniques will lead to development of creativity in the style of an artist. It is the purpose of this manual to serve as a reference guide for art students, art teachers and art professionals.

        3 out of 5 stars review.......2007-09-09

What is up with the bad computer renderings? I think since it's drawing book-drawings would've been more appropriate. This book is somewhat confusing and reads like classroom notes....I'm still trying to figure it out and I have a BFA. Had I not already known most of these techniques described, I don't think I would be able to decipher this book at all. Its like figuring out a puzzle trying to figure out what is written and the computer renderings are of no help at all. Im not saying its a bad book, its just a really confusing read.

5 out of 5 stars The quintessential book on how to paint and draw.......2003-08-25

The Artist's Atelier is very well-organized and detail-oriented, not to mention visually appealing. At first I questioned the highly technical nature of the materials as it seemed at first overly complicated yet the information worked out to be invaluable. After looking at my finished drawings, and paintings I was amazed, thinking to myself "this is the best work I have ever produced so good, I can't believe that I did it", it certainly gives me faith in my abilities and inspires me to try more art. I think the techniques I learned from this book will help me in whatever medium I choose, and I wouldn't be surprised if they helped me draw realistic portraits from life as well.

Henry Doren instructs the reader to use the technics and approached of the old world master to get an exceptional image. He describes in detail how to draw each feature of a face, hand, foot, figure and gives many examples and technique. Finally the reader is encouraged to put it all the technics together and do a full portrait or painting.

          Book Description

When Joep van Lieshout (b. 1963) founded the art and architecture studio that bears his name, he set in motion what has been described as "a new Dutch architectural style dirty, delicious and direct." Now Atelier Van Lieshout is 10, and the first major monograph devoted to it, A Manual (1997), has been sold out for years. This new overview brings readers into AVL's contrarian applied art via luxuriously appointed "mobile homes," autonomous communes and surreal art projects, with equal time given to AVL-Ville (2001), a "free state" in Rotterdam's port, complete with its own flag, its own constitution and its own currency, and the revealing minutia of AVL's portfolio, from furniture to the "Bar Rectum," a perverse take on the Oscar-Meyer Weiner Mobile. The idea of art that can be used for a self-sufficient and independent lifestyle hits a uniquely high point in AVL-Ville, a culmination of all the work AVL has done before. And it lives on: After a successful and tumultuous year of work, AVL has recently located its first AVL-Ville export product in Park Middelheim in Antwerp: the AVL Franchise Unit. This richly illustrated survey tracks AVL's serious and often provocative portfolio through a crucial period in its growth and development.

            5 out of 5 stars Better than a How-to.......2007-02-05

I learned much from this book about color, composition and still-life set-up. Ms. Kay's gouache paintings of flowers and fruit are unpretentious, yet refined and altogether beautiful. I think that any aspiring artist could learn more from reading the author's thoughts on her paintings and by simply attempting to copy, as an exercise, one of her paintings, than from any step-by-step art instruction manual. This is one of my favorite art books.

            5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Paintings.......2002-02-14

Like the previous reviewer, I purchased the book because I was intrigued by gouache. However, I did not expect it to be a how-to book and it isn't. Ms. Kay does talk a lot about the medium: how to use it and its difference from transparent watercolor. There is much you can learn. Of course, the best part is Ms. Kay's collection of paintings. Beautiful, dynamic still lifes that are great for the artist, but are also great if you love gardening and flowers and would like a lovely book depicting lush roses, joyous pansies, and a number of other flowers, large and small, in terra cotta pots, small crystal goblets, everyday glasses. The settings could be your dining room table or a favorite shelf. There are also sketches of Venice, paintings of gardens, and a sleeping kitten that is wonderful (that's a lot for me to say since my idea of a real pet is a German Shepherd or Bernese Mountain Dog and nothing remotely feline, but I would gladly hang this pastel in my bedroom). There are several pastels and a number of casual portrait sketches. All are wonderfully done. I recommend the book highly.

            3 out of 5 stars Not a How - To Type Book.......2001-12-12

I bought this book because I was intrigued to see a book on painting in gouache (opaque watercolor). On receiving it I was surprised as it was not the type of book I expected it to be. This is not a how-to book despite what the blurbs led me to think. This is more of a book on the life, thoughts and painting experiences of Pamela Kay as she uses gouache, watercolor, pastel and oil to express herself.

As such, it is more akin to coffee-table books that display paintings by the artist. She does provide somewhat more detail into the painting and drawing process than a coffee-table art book but not as much as I'd wished. Also, after awhile, I yearned for more variety in the paintings as the book was page after page of bowls of fruit and flowers in vases. There were a few paintings of landscapes and some sketches of people but they were too few. This is not a bad book. It can be quite enjoyable for someone who is a fan of Ms. Kay's paintings. Just understand it is more about Ms. Kay and a display of her paintings and musings than tips or techniques for painting in gouache yourself.

                Book Description

The recent Atelier van Lieshout works documented here are neatly designed, carefully built, and deeply ominous enclosed communities. The Disciplinator is built to cycle more than 70 residents through 24 bunks and mess hall seats and 36 work stations. No one comes in, no one goes out. AVL is a studio, a commune, a cult, and, for a while, a free state--led by artist Joep van Lieshout.
