Book Description
Jump into the cold water, right off the front porch, for an early swim; take hot coffee alfresco in a rooftop deck chair as the sunrise lights a panorama of sea birds and skyline; then, kayak off to a meeting downtown.
Live on a houseboat and you see wildlife and city life converge to make every day feel like vacation. That's what they say. Thousands of permanent water citizens-ranging from young tycoons to elder hippies-have rejected big houses, chattel, and land for the rich neighborhood life of dense residential marinas. This isn't a lifestyle look, it's the real thing. Adventurous living: independent, expressive, and fun.
The most comprehensive book on the floating dwellings of North America, The Houseboat Book reveals intriguing villages (floating on century-old cedar logs, concrete barges, Styrofoam blocks, plastic barrels, fiberglass, and painted wood) in British Columbia, Canada, and in Washington, Oregon, California, Florida, New York, and New Jersey. One sees wonderfully inventive architecture-a thatched cabana in paradisiacal Key West, a barged train car (as family home/circus stage) in industrial Brooklyn-imaginative design at its best.

Awesome.......2004-06-01
Awesome -- That's all I can say. If you're interested in houseboats for any reason, this is your book.
History, information, great writing, and awesome photography! This one interests everyone.
Great coffee table book.
Kathy -- neighbor to "The Lindner House" featured in the book.
p.s. If you live in the Portland, Sausalito, or Seattle Houseboat communities, you will especially enjoy this book.
Fabulous Gift Book.......2004-01-05
I gave this book to a few close friends for the holidays. I have never had such great feedback about a giftbook. The book is not only beautiful to look at, but it contains such great details, history, and stories about houseboats and their owners. I definitely give this 5 stars!! I look forward to Flanagan's next book!

Book Description
"Liz Kessler makes a splash with this tightly written, highly imaginative debut." — FAMILYFUN
For as long as she can remember, twelve-year-old Emily Windsnap has lived on a boat. And, oddly enough, for just as long, her mother has seemed anxious to keep her away from the water. But when Mom finally agrees to let her take swimming lessons, Emily makes a startling discovery - about her own identity, the mysterious father she's never met, and the thrilling possibilities and perils shimmering deep below the water's surface. With a sure sense of suspense and richly imaginative details, first-time author Liz Kessler lures us into a glorious undersea world where mermaids study shipwrecks at school and Neptune rules with an iron trident - an enchanting fantasy about family secrets, loyal friendship, and the convention-defying power of love.

great.......2007-08-20

The deep secret.......2007-08-15
If you liked the movie Aquamarine or the story of The Little Mermaid, you'll probably like this scaly fishy tale about a twelve year old girl with a big secret.
Emily lives with her mother on a boat, and on the day of her first ever swimming class at her new school, she discovers that she's different from her classmates. If she had ever heard of the group Styx, and their classic song Mr. Roboto, she might have sung:
I've got a secret that's been hiding under my skin
My mother's human, my father's missing, and now I have fins
So if you see me swimming freely, don't be surprised
I'm just a girl who needed someone, with something to hide
Exploring the wet element with her new-found talent, she finds a colorful and magical world under the sea, and meets a new BFF who helps her on a big adventure to find her father. Of course they meet all sorts of obstacles in their way, and come up against the dark cloud of the power-crazy water god who doesn't want her to have another bright (bright) bright (bright) sun-shiny day.
Fast and easy to read, this is one that should appeal to young readers up to the age of 12, especially girls, although boys may also find some parts to their liking.
Amanda Richards, August 14, 2007
A great read at any age!!.......2007-06-03
I am a middle school teacher and am always looking for fun and interesting read. I am finding that the world has hardened many of the stories for the 9-15 age range and have forgotten, that kids need to read to "escape" sometimes and dream. This is that book!!! My 10 year old loved it and is ready for the other two books. She told me I "HAD" to read it, so I did and remembered the joy of reading and escaping to another world of mermaids, that I believe all "girls and women" always love to see and dream off. Who of us has not pictured a pretty tail, long smooth hair and pearls a midst??? This is a must read at any age and great for any young reader or older reader too.
enjoy
TheTail of Emily Windsnap.......2007-05-30
This book is once of the best books I have ever read. It is full of mystery and action. It is about a girl who finds out she is a mermaid. She tries to find her dad and tries to find out who she really is. I would recommend this book for anyone ages 8-14!!
More Than Mermaids.......2007-05-29
Underneath the magic of mermaids, this story is a close cousin of "The Parent Trap" (the 1998 film, not the 1961 one, as the cell phones and cultural references are current) with the margical flourishes of "Freaky Friday" and "The Little Mermaid" thrown in for good measure. This story has a future Disney production written all over it.
It is the emotional daydream of every pre-teen girl without a father at home, who imagines that her father could be a wonderful man who left for honorable reasons, wishes that her mom and dad could get together again, and longs for a new best friend. The mother-daughter dialog rings true; Millie, her mother's New Age obsessed friend is delightful; and the fast paced, first person narrative is captivating. My 8 year old daughter and 6 year old son enjoyed it.

A great mystery for kids.......2004-03-15
Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny are taking a trip downriver in a houseboat! But along the way, many mysterious things happen. The Aldens have solved mysteries before, but can they sove this one? I would recommend this book for kids ages 5-14.
A good review.......2003-03-21
This was a good book to read. I read this book recently. I have never lived on a houseboat but I have been in several boats. This book was completely different from the previous book in the series. The first book was good because I was in the age group when I had the book read to me by my school teacher.
Wonderful for younger kids!.......2001-11-14
Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny are taking a trip downriver in a houseboat! But along the way, many mysterious things happen. The Aldens have solved mysteries before, but can they sove this one? I would recommend this book for kids ages 5-9. They can follow the Aldens along for all of their mysteries, making friends, and giving help to everyone!
This book was good, but some of her others were better........1999-01-16
This book was incredably interesting but i do like the one titled "The Amusement Park Mystery" better.I belive someone other than herself wrote that story after the origional author passed away.I hope the new mystery writers keep on writing the box car mysteries cuz i wanna be a writer!!
My first experience with the boxcar children.......1998-01-05
The Houseboat Mystery was the first book that I read in The Boxcar Children Mysteries series. I began reading these books when I was nine and continued to do so throughout my fourth grade year. These are excellent books for children in this age group. Boys and girls alike should enjoy them. I'm twenty five now and can still remember these fascinating stories. I remember that after I had read all of the books in this series that my school library had to offer, I was stuck on mystery books. I read mystery titles from other authors that my library had in stock, but none compared to these. I wish that I could thank the author personally.
Book Description
1915. The story begins: What are you doing, Freddie? asked Bert Bobbsey, leaning over to oil the front wheel of his bicycle, while he glanced at his little brother, who was tying strings about the neck of a large, handsome dog. Making a harness, answered Freddie, not taking time to look up. A harness? repeated Bert, with a little laugh. How can you make a harness out of bits of string? I'm going to have straps, too, went on Freddie, keeping busily on with his work. Flossie has gone in after them. It's going to be a fine strong harness. No, you are too small to go near gasoline motors, said his father. "Besides, we are not going to use the engine. We'll just push the boat along with poles from the bank. We're not going very far, but your mother thought it would be nicer to spend the night in a more open place."

The Bobbsey Twins - A family tradition.......2007-03-09
My mother ordered the collection of The Bobbsey Twins for me when I was a little girl. I would forward to the new book for the month. I enjoyed many hours of pure pleasure reading those books. My mother had read them when she was a little girl. I was ecstatic to find the series at Amazon.com. I have purchased them all so that I can share them with my niece. I wish I had found them when my sons were growing up. My mother mentioned the books at Christmas when we were talking about how my niece reads everything she can put her hands on. So I searched for the collection and found it at amazon.com.

Book Description
Pen and wash is the easiest and fastest way to build painting skills. Master painters commonly use it as a first step in more complex, complete paintings: to get down basic compositions and solidify ideas. In Work Small, Learn Big, an impressive list of artists from around the world illustrates the value and possibilities in pen and wash: Tony Couch on designing with pen and wash Richard Plincke on building confidence Keith Bowen on techniques to develop personal style Judy Schroeder on experimenting with pen and wash Don Getz on expanding picture-making ability with a travel journal
Compressing the styles and methods of a broad array of artists into one volume, this book overflows with ideas delivered in a beginner-friendly, illustration-heavy format.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-02-09
Reasons why I highly recommend this book...
* Lots of inspiration for different techniques to try
* Lists of art supplies the artists prefer is very helpful
* The artists are actually very good, unlike some books
* The book itself is nicely designed
* I have a fascination with other artists' sketchbooks
* It's my new favorite book
divers info with good loose artwork.......2006-12-12
I buy way too many art, drawing and how to books. Too many because a lot of the books just have terribly cramped or uptight art in them. This is not one of them. Often books either have good technical information but the art looks bad; or the art is really good but the instruction goes from a sketch to the final painting in one and a half sentence. This is one of the books where instruction as well as the quality of the art are both interesting.
If you like pen/ink/wash sketches or if you've been doing a lot of pen sketching and you want to add some washes, this book will give you lots of examples and progress shots, mostly of environments, buildings, sheds, nature, streets. The implementations of the pen/wash method are varied and are shown to you by various artists (roughly 15 artists - each having roughly 6 pages to show their method), and my guess is you will find some that will suit you, or that you can use as a base for for your own way of doing things.
Educational as well as inspirational. 5 stars.
My New favorite Art Book.......2005-08-06
This is both a great coffee table book and a great guide for artists. This is not a book of step by step instruction for drawing or painting objects. Instead, each chapter is given to a different artist to explain their materials and methods in pen and watercolor sketching.
I appreciated the way each artist listed the materials that make up their sketch kit, from the type of pen to the paper, usually accompanied by a photograph of the whole thing. The artist then goes on to explain their approach, accompanied by numerous illustrations and pictures. There are so many different approaches covered here that you are sure to find some inspiration for your own work.
The works displayed in this book are outstanding. While some artists here use the sketch to prepare for a painting, many have the sketch as a final goal. I personally get much more enjoyment out of looking at sketches than at finished works.
If you use a sketchbook, watercolors or pens i can't recommend this highly enough.
Step by Step Instructions!.......2005-03-24
Learn new watercolor & sketching skills by creating small versions with this super book of clearly diagramed steps, by a variety of artists around the world. From realism to quick sketches, this wonderful book is loaded with great ideas and examples. A must have for any sketchbook artist!
Book Description
The only complete guide - for all types and levels of artists - on sketching from life in pen and ink, written by a master of the subject and presented in easy-to-follow, step-by-step fashion.
Claudia Nice teaches artists how to create powerful sketches of plants, skies, waterscapes, houses & buildings, animals, birds, faces & figures and more after discussing the basics of the medium from maintaining the pen, ink and paper to the seven simple strokes used. All subjects are illustrated by her beautiful sketches, showing artists what beauty can be achieved with just a pen and a bottle of ink. Claudia is a multi-media artist, but prefers pen, ink and watercolor when working in the field. She has been an art consultant and instructor, has authored 15 art instruction books and travels across North America conducting workshops, seminars and demonstrations at schools, clubs, shops and trade shows. She has recently opened her own teaching studio near Mt. Hook, Oregon.
Customer Reviews:
This is the best book on the subject I have seen.......2007-04-03
I had a couple of books that covered the subject of Pen and Ink drawing, but none were as easy to follow and helpful as this one. The pictures in the book are simply to die for. She shows you exactly how she creates line, shape and form with ink. There is also an explanation of the tools you will need (not much and not expensive really) to do this kind of work. If you are looking for a good instructional book on drawing with pen and ink I highly recommend this book. However, beware, your paints may dry up in their tubes as you get addicted to doing pen and ink. Fun stuff, the author writes in a way that is easy for anyone to follow.
Nice Reference.......2006-08-04
Claudia Nice always does a fine job with details and examples. In comparison to her pen & ink with watercolor books, this one is a little boring. If you are really interested in using pen & ink as a medium, then this is a good book. If you are looking for reference material and drawing examples with intructions, then I recommend a different Nice book.
Fantastic.......2005-09-30
I love the step by step instruction and the real life examples. With no formal training I can sketch the way I always wanted to.
Claudia Nice knows her stuff.......2005-07-24
Very thorough directions for various pen and ink techniques. Really breaks down the process into easily understandable steps.
Excellent, lot's of tips & techniques.......2000-05-03
This is an excellent book for anyone just starting to learn pen & ink drawing. This is not a step-by-step, draw what I draw, book. It is more a collection of tips & techniques for drawing almost any subject.
The author starts out by explaining each kind of line and what it's used for. Next, she explains value. Ink washes, a dry brush, and a variety of different line types are then used to create contrast and texture.
The design & composition section is great for showing you how to put everything together and what pitfalls to look out for. She also guides you through choosing a subject, finding a good photo to work from and achieving perspective.
Finally, each kind of subject is explained in detail. Some include flowers, landscapes, all kinds of water, and buildings. She also covers many animals including dogs, horses & birds. Human faces & figures are detailed as well.
Book Description
This guide explores styles and subjects of drawing and the range of effects possible with the materials available today. Experiment with the new pens and markers, and decide which media are your favorites. Chapters include drawing sunlight and shadow; composition and layout; perspective; getting life and character into a drawing; line and mixed media; and sketchbook studies. Complete with 120 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Great pictures and text on pen and ink.......2007-05-13
I borrowed this book from the library, and I am actually reading it because the text is helpful, unlike many books. I am still a beginner in drawing but love pen and ink, and this book talks about finding your own style, encourages you to go outside to draw, and gives practical examples of where to draw in texture and where and when not to. I would definitely buy this book if I hadn't found at my local library--it is a fairly small book. I like Claudia Nice books for inspiration, but this book gives me some practical help.
Excellent drawings for copying as beginning artist.......2000-02-04
This is an excellent book with very well written text and many many drawings for the reader to review. I found it wonderful to use as ideas to copy as a beginning artist. I love the English countryside pictures and the boat pictures. I feel there is wonderful guidance presented for the beginning artist. I would recommend this book to anyone that is drawing, as stated it gave me a lot of subject matter when I could not be outside gathering my own. Excellent book for the price.
Great book for both beginner and intermediate ink sketchers.......1997-03-03
This is a great addition to any artist's library. Caldwell's own delightful drawings serve as samples to the student, and he covers everything from materials to composition to perspective. In just a couple of sessions, I could see improvement in my own drawings. This, along with Guptill's "Rendering in Pen and Ink" is almost library enough for most ink artists
