Excellent product condition! No problems with seller - very straightforward purchase and will buy again!!

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but had a lot of fluff.......2007-08-29

For me this book was required for a class. I guess it wasn't bad but I felt like I had to pick through all their example stories to find any of the real content. So much was case studies of one child or another. And most of the case studies were in themselves mostly fluff.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with usefull information.......2007-02-18

I found this book very engaging, the topics were interesting and the graphics were very appropriate. I really liked how every other page had an interesting question that you could apply to everyday life and you got the answer in 2 pages. I would skip ahead to find out the answer. But after my developmental psychology class was over i wanted to keep this book. i love it.

Book Description

Newman and Newman take a chronological approach to the study of the life span, drawing on the psychosocial theory of Erik Erikson to provide a conceptual framework for the text. Newman and Newman address physical, intellectual, social, and emotional growth in all life stages, focusing on the idea that development results from the interdependence of these areas at every stage, and placing special emphasis on optimal development through life. The text is noted for its clear organization, providing instructors and students with a coherent structure for tracing development over the life span. The text integrates theory and research with application, making the rich material of development useful for emerging professionals. Each life stage chapter ends with an applied topic that helps students connect the developmental themes of that stage with critical societal issues. The use of case material throughout offers a way to balance information about general patterns of development with information about individual differences and life stories. Human diversity is introduced in the very first chapter and is a continuing theme, reflected in research coverage, theoretical analysis, illustrations, and boxes. Through a variety of pedagogical strategies including the illustrations and captions, points for further reflection, and case analysis, the Newmans have created a text that encourages the reader to engage in ongoing integration and critical analysis.

Shipment was delayed, however, they were prompt in informing us of that fact so that we could decide whether we could wait for it to come in. It ended up coming in before the anticipated delivery date. Great Service!

4 out of 5 stars great lifespan book.......2006-11-04

bought this book for my lifespan development course. I actually enjoy reading it!

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst study guides.......2006-04-13

It is a shame that my copy was not proofread. There are numerous incorrect answers. I had to spend double the time to find all the correct answers. It upsets me that I spent so much money to help me and it created more work for me. I don't think that I will be purchasing another study guide from this publisher in the future. It had the potential to be a great study guide had more attention been taken when it was released.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-02-20

This book is required reading for my current graduate class: Human Growth & Development. It is a great book that provides in-depth info about human development throughout the lifespan. What's especially helpful is that every life stage is neatly broken down into seperate chapters, and every chapter details the impact of biological, psychological, and social factors on growth. This book will definitely help in understanding the process of growth and change in your own life.

3 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2007-08-28

The text and the price were right for a new text, but this text was supposed to have the "My Developmental Lab" CD and access code since it is new and stated it in the description. Check with your professors before buying it here because my NEW text came opened and with out the My Development Lab products that were necessary for my class.

5 out of 5 stars Development Through the Lifespan, Third Edition.......2007-02-15

This hardcover textbook was required for a college course, and is an excellent book - well-written, thourough without being too esoteric, and a wonderful resource. I ordered it used ("like new condition") through one of Amazon's vendors. It was much less expensive than it was in the college bookstore. It was delivered sooner than I expected and was in perfect condition.

5 out of 5 stars Annotated Instructor's Edition - Same Attractive Cover.......2005-05-18

The instructor's edition is ISBN 0-205-19291-2. The book and the additional instructor's pages are very comprehensive. In addition, there is a web site that supports the book - abacon.com/berk. The text covers human development at all stages of the human lifespan with many illustrations and high-quality paper and comprehensive writing. This beautiful book is available on the Amazon Marketplace for just a few dollars which is an excellent value.

          Book Description

“This volume presents the reader with a stimulating rich tapestry of essays exploring the nature of action and intentionality, and discussing their role in human development. As the contributions make clear, action is an integrative concept that forms the bridge between our psychological, biological, and sociocultural worlds. Action is also integrative in the sense of entailing motivational, emotional, and cognitive systems, and this integration too is well represented in the chapters. Action is defined, and distinguished from behavior, according to its intentional quality. Thus, a constantly recurring theme in the volume involves the dialectic of action-intentionality, and specifically the questions of how and when these concepts are to be distinguished. For action theorists, action—as distinguished from behavior—constitutes the fundamental mechanism of human development. This commitment is detailed in several essays that explore the life-span implications of action. This timely volume will be must reading for all who want to learn about, or stay current with, contemporary action theoretical approaches to human development.” – Willis F. Overton, Temple University The present volume advances the view that we cannot go far in understanding development over the life span without paying heed to self-reflective processes. In a reciprocal way, self-reflection links developmental change in the ways in which the person constructs his or her own development over the life span. Development, action, and intentionality exist, then, in an intimate relationship: As development forms the social and historical settings within which intentional activity is embedded, thus become indispensable categories for developmental theory and research. Due to their potential to integrate culture, history, and personality, action-theoretical concepts have made strong inroads in many areas of social and behavioral research. Within the field of developmental psychology, researchers have come to recognize that developmental patterns, and their variation across historical and social contexts, cannot easily be reduced to invariant laws. Instead, they reflect the agency of both the culture and the person. Issues of intentional self-development gain particular importance within the developmental settings of modernity. Under conditions of cultural acceleration, globalization, and pluralization of life forms, normative “scripts” and timetables of development have become blurred, and people are increasingly forced to take a planful, self-monitoring, and optimizing stance toward their own behavior and development. As will become evident throughout this ground-breaking book, an action perspective on development covers a broad spectrum of theoretical approaches. Concepts such as “personal goals,” “personal projects,” “life themes,” “meaning,” “life planning,” “compensation,” or “intentional self-development” have become the nuclei of innovative research programs. The chapters collected in this volume, by scholars on the forefront of action theory and research, provide an indication of the promise that these notions hold for life-span developmental psychology, motivation research, and research on aging.

              Book Description

What is a supermaterial? A concise definition is by no means obvious, but a clue can be obtained from the topics discussed here..
In addition to superconductors, the reader will encounter magnetic effects of many kinds, including giant and even colossal ones, organic conductors, photoconductors, and even 400-year-old Japanese ceramics. Processing is a prominent pursuit in supermaterials research, especially but not exclusively of the superconductors. The papers on characterisation and theory break new ground, particularly in pursuit of new optoelectronic phenomena. The parade of new materials recently synthesised, often containing four or more elements, is surprising. But it is in it reporting of new applications that the book stands out: from circuits to sensors, supermaterials are making their impact on society.
