The Color of Cities.......2001-02-14
As a colorist for the last twenty years, specializing in exterior building color I was sorely disappointed to read this book. Basically everything she had to say of import could have be said in an essay. The author has a wonderful vocabulary but after wading through all the prose one finds there is liitle said that isn't entirely obvious. I was left with the impression that this book was concieved as a great excuse to travel to the world's really wonderful places. You will note that she not traveled to Lubbock or Erzerum.

A visual, historical and sociological treat!.......2000-09-20
The is a somewhat remarkable book, worth the high price tag. Swirnoff tackles an unique issue: the role of color/light in forming a particular city's identity. She cites (and sites) examples from New York to Santa Fe to Venice to Mexico to Paris to the Caribbean to Stockholm to Japan and many others, too. The book has many photo examples, both black-and-white and color, as well as quite thought provoking written discussion. This is a much-needed book, focusing on an important issue of local identity at a time when globalization challenges the specifics of space and place. The book would appeal to travellers, visual artists, architects, sociologists, urban planners and many others.
Customer Reviews:
very good book.......2005-10-08
I found this to be a very good book and very educational. I am painting my 19th century house using it as a guide. In the previous review someone wrote:
"Unfortunately, there are precious few old drawings and the ones they do have are done in muted browns and beiges. Now, I know they didn't have color photos back in those days, but I do wish they'd included more color pictures (drawings) of these old houses."
This person has obviously missed the point of the book. Did you read it? Those _are_ color drawings and those "muted browns and beiges" _were_ the colors used back then. People have a stereotype of 19th century colors as supposedly being bright and contrasty; this is due to the colorist movement in San Francisco back in the 70s, but is not appropriate when seeking 19th century accuracy. The crazy row-house colors of San Francisco are modern interpretations; whereas the Victorians preferred earth tones. The authors go at length to explain this with drawings and historic reproductions that are accurate in color.
My only gripe with this book is that there should be more photographs of 19th houses painted historically. I think more photos would give home restorers more ideas to pick from.
Quite a good reference book for old house lovers (like me!).......2000-05-02
This book is over 110 pages and every page has at least one picture, and most have two or three.
Beyond the good information re: color schemes, there is a lot of information in this book about the 101 details (fretwork, finials, porches, etc) of an old house.
Unfortunately, there are precious few old drawings and the ones they do have are done in muted browns and beiges. Now, I know they didn't have color photos back in those days, but I do wish they'd included more color pictures (drawings) of these old houses.
There are also some very interesting old paint ads - such as one that suggests the right house paint is *the* key to health and happiness. The book also contains plenty of written information and history, which is interesting reading.
And the photos/drawings offer a nice blend of the ostentatious Queen Annes and by contrast, the simple and modest "Builder's Style" homes.
I'm an old house purist trying to redo my simple old home as authentically as possible. This book is a good resource for that.
Excellent detail, very helpful.......1999-07-07
I really enjoyed all the details and information so that I can paint my own Victorian home. Good color combinations, great historical information. I do wish there had been a few more photos of correctly painted homes.
Book Description
Architecture in Detail: Colors examines how color plays a role in even the most upscale architectural designs. The series itself examines the role of details in contemporary architecture through the work of many emerging and established practitioners whose projects speak sensitively and energetically on a small scale. Color is just another one of those details architects use to put their own

Explores the work of top architects and interior designers.......2005-03-14
The third volume in the "Architecture in Detail" series, Colors: Architecture in Detail explores the work of top architects and interior designers working today. Especially focusing on the form/color duality, Colors is filled cover to cover with beautiful photographs illustrating rooms and exteriors based around the impact of various colors: white, black, red, blue, yellow, brown, gray, green, and polychrome. Paragraph highlights draw attention to specific details, but the majority of Colors focuses squarely upon the almost dreamlike images themselves. A truly captivating volume simply to page through.

Prayer and protest come in many guises. The Basotho women of South Africa and Lesotho pray to their ancestors for rain, abundance, and peace by painting and slicing brilliant geometric murals on the mud plaster walls of their houses. "If the prayers are successful," says photographer and author Gary N. van Wyk, "the rains arrive and wash away the paintings." Growing up white under apartheid, van Wyk noticed these vivid houses while traveling with his family through the Highveld below Johannesburg where many Basotho lived and worked on white-owned farms. In the years when links to the outlawed African National Congress party were often severely punished, some Basotho women defiantly splashed their homes with the black, green, and gold colors of the ANC. Van Wyk joined in such protests as an art student by helping paint street murals of state-sanctioned violence. A passion for recording political graffiti led him back to the dwellings decorated in ANC colors, several of which he photographed for this dazzling testament to Basotho lives, ceremonies, history, and art. --Francesca Coltrera
Customer Reviews:
WOW - great book!!! Wonderful art, beautiful color pics.......2003-08-20
This is really a wonderful book! I bought it because it looked like it had nice color pictures, and it turned out they're fantastic! I'm an artist and I just LOVE these beautiful painted houses. It also looks like it has a lot of good information in the narrative, but so far all I've done is look at the great color pics. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Women's art as a poltical message.......2001-03-27
African Painted Houses is filled with not only beautiful photographs of dwellings, but reminds us of a time not to far ago where South Africa was filled with distress, social and political upheavel, and when women were meant to be at home. Women are still told to stay at home, and these African women took it upon themselves to go against the social status quo and speak there minds in an amazing artistic manner. African Painted Houses will enlighten you to the true nature of the protest against the Apartheid. When the African men were out fighting for independence and when the African men were prisoned and not home, who maintained the house? who maintained the continuing fight against the Apartheid...it was women. African painted Houses is an easy read and will fill your minds from a world that is so far from ours but the messages are so close to the heart. Women have voices and in this book, women's voices are projected into a beautiful masterpieces.
a visual feast for the eyes.......2000-09-17
This book is full of wonderful photographs of African Painted houses. The verbage is complete in explaining the significance of the illustrations from a historical and present day view. This is a facinating rich culture. The use of patterns and color, and their meaning come together in an easy to understand format. This a book I can pick up and read for hours at a time or peruse for minutes.

Customer Reviews:
its great to see a book for architecture on how to do color.......1999-06-02
Its great to see a book finally for architecture on how to do color for buildings - with methods, materials and much on the color design process. This is a very practical apporach that i enjoyed reading and thinking about in my own work. Having to select materials, i.e., bricks and paneling and paint colors is never easy and this book makes clear what the strategies are all about for residential and commercial projects as well as architecture of various size, shapes and scale. I like the way the author organizes his approach and the visuals and layout design are clean and quite interesting. Good job and a big help!

Book Description
Alice Gray's compilation of heartwarming stories of goodness and cheer inspire you to spread some sunshine, like ripples in a pond ... and be encouraged in the process. Elegantly illustrated in vivid watercolors by the gifted hand of Katia Andreeva.
Book Description
Virtuoso watercolorist Rick Brosen has been wandering the streets of New York City for most of his life. His paintings capture a city void of urban bustle and noise, a "still" New York in every sense of the word.
Brosen knows the city's hidden jewels-the elegant statues in vest-pocket West Side parks, the terra-cotta ornamentation on Harlem bow-front row houses, and the haunting emptiness of the surviving cast-iron market buildings along the Hudson. He also knows its major landmarks-the Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Station, and Ellis Island, to name but a few. Alongside Brosen's luminous paintings, best-selling author and award-winning documentary filmmaker Ric Burns and New York Times journalist Alan Feuer retrace the origins and growth of this ever-changing city from Tribeca and SoHo through Midtown and on to Central Park and up to the Cloisters, revealing-with Brosen's watercolors-its favorite places and hidden treasures.
Customer Reviews:
Sort of a Chris Van Allsburg feel .......2006-12-28
It's extremely well-executed photo realism with pencil + watercolor, and
the artist has chosen buildings/scenes which are architecturally strong
and visually rich so as to let his technique really shine. However, the
real strength, I think, is actually the artist's ability to impart a
dreamlike quality (reminiscent of children's book illustrator Chris Van
Allsburg). This elevates the book to a whole different, more evocative
level, so that you stop marveling at the technique and start thinking of
the subject matter itself. Anyone who loves New York should love this
book.
Book Description
The wonders of Paris never fail to delight both visitors and inhabitants alike. Like many before him, artist Alain Bouldouyre, a long-time resident of the City of Lights, has been snared by the city's charms. My Paris Sketchbook documents his deep attachment to the capital, presenting a selection of sketches made over the past few years, all executed in watercolor.
Bouldouyre takes us on a very personal tour, visiting both the well-known and less frequented streets and sites the capital has to offer. My Paris Sketchbook evokes the true character of the city's particular palette of colors, its imposing historical architecture punctuated by discreet contemporary interludes, and the eternal romance and beauty of the Seine and its banks. This book will provide a treasured addition to the library for Paris lovers, while enthusiasts of watercolor will appreciate the artist's mastery of this highly popular medium.
Customer Reviews:
This Sketchbook Illuminates The City Of Lights!.......2003-11-16
No city touches my soul like Paris. She is the queen of old world charm, of romantic ambiance, bourgeois elegance and bohemian grit. Fine art and cuisine flourish here, as do sidewalk cafes, flea markets and Parisian attitude. The Pont-Neuf, along the banks of the Seine, is one of my favorite places in the world. Artist Alain Bouldouyre, a longtime resident of the City of Light is obviously another person who has been captivated by the delights of Paris. Monsieur Bouldouyre is an illustrator and the artistic director of Senso magazine.
This richly visual sketchbook, filled with Bouldouyre's elegant watercolors, brings the city to life, in all her glory. His sophisticated palette of colors and sensitive line brilliantly capture the historic architecture, contemporary street scenes, the beauty of the Seine and its banks. The Place de la Concorde is depicted at sunrise. Readers are given a poetic portrait of the various Arrondissements and their attractions at different times of day and night, in natural light and illuminated by streetlights. We are taken to the Louvre, the Opera and down less frequented side streets. Christophe Auduraud's narrative complements the illustrations. Auduraud is a film critic and novelist, and a past scholar of the Villa Médicis, the French cultural institute in Rome.
The book has a lovely flow to it. It is handsomely bound with a linen spine and a color-washed cover painting. The paper is a heavy cream colored, heavily ribbed stock with notes written in longhand alongside the vibrant sketches. If you have been to Paris, this is a wonderful remembrance. If you have never been there, Bouldouyre' watercolors capture the city's essence better than any photograph could.

A Shape Painter if there ever was one - Beautiful Book!.......1999-04-02
Rather than tricks or gimmicks, this painter has taught himself to see shapes of color, juxtaposed. His bold division of space and handling of textures and edges are wonderful. His paintings evoke a sense of place, atmosphere and wonder at the "natural" world. These watercolors go beyond the ordinary.

Field Notes from the Grand Canyon: Raging River, Quiet Mind : An Illustrated Journal
ASIN: 1555662749 |
Book Description
Wallace Stegner once wrote, "We depend upon wilderness increasingly for relief from the termite life we have created." But that poses the question: if wilderness is our sole antidote, don't we risk loving it to death, using it up as we have used up so much else? How can great places teach us to live more fully within our daily lives? What might this mean for the health of wilderness itself?
Author and artist Teresa Jordan looks for the answers in four essays of apprenticeship, turning to the work of two previous students of Yosemitenaturalist John Muir and the painter Chiura Obataas well as from those most elemental of teachers, the rocks and the trees.
Both Muir and Obata used painting and drawing as primary tools for understanding, and Jordan's own watercolors illuminate her journey of exploration. Like "Field Notes from the Grand Canyon," this second volume in Teresa Jordan's series of Sketchbook Expeditions uses superb full-color reproductions on special paper that approximates the look and feel of a watercolor sketchbook. This beautiful little volume makes an irresistible gift, to be read and re-read time and time again.

Book Description
Skipjacks and workboats, tidal rivers and coastal marshes, charming streetscapes, historic houses, and town parks with bandstands -- picturesque subjects abound along the shores of Chesapeake Bay and have long made the region a favorite among amateur and professional artists. In Painting the Eastern Shore, accomplished artist and teacher James Drake Iams combines visits to some of the Chesapeake's most beautiful places with step-by-step lessons for learning the art of watercolor painting.
This attractive volume will serve as a welcome companion for the amateur watercolorist setting out to paint on location. After offering tips on what equipment to pack, Iams gives specific directions to various Delmarva sites, tells how to set up, and suggests what to look for in a subject. He then discusses a variety of essential techniques: sketching, composition, value, color, control of the medium, capturing depth and handling perspective, wetting the paper, and methods for painting key elements such as clouds, birds, boats, sand, and water.
As he introduces readers to the fundamentals of watercolor painting, Iams leads them on a rambling, thoroughly enjoyable tour of memorable places throughout Maryland and Virginia's Eastern Shore and Delaware. Painting the Eastern Shore is illustrated with 49 line drawings, halftones, and color pictures.
