5 out of 5 stars AN ENTERTAINING AND WELL-WRITTEN BOOK.......2004-01-30

I have read Fort Lauderdale and Broward County, An Illustrated History by Mr. McIver and thought that was a great book. But his newest one is even better! It is a fascinating story not only about the struggle between Walter Smith and Guy Bradley, but also about the plume trade and its major players, the Audubon Society's foundations, important people in South Florida's history who had their hands in the plume trade, and just interesting stories about "the way things were" in the late 1800s early 1900s.

He interviewed several significant historical people and their descendents, mostly in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when he originally attempted to write this book. 25 years later, he has created a masterpiece. He has obtained an amazing amount of research information, and the reader will be very happy he spent time to read it.

      Book Description

Herons are large, popular, and in many cases spectacular birds found in tropical, temperate, natural, and man-made wetlands worldwide. Some populations are very small and localised, some have decreased, and some have expanded their ranges. Very few are pests to human activities.
In the fifteen years since the publication of The Herons Handbook there has been a tremendous increase in our knowledge of heron status and conservation requirements set against a backdrop of increasing concern about the future of wetland habitats. The local status of heron populations may reflect the success or failure of conservation action in wetlands.
This book provides a comprehensive update following two distinct threads. The status and conservation needs of herons are first presented on a regional basis in a series of chapters set at a continental or subcontinental scale. Over 200 biologists and heron conservationists-many associated with the Heron Specialist Group sponsored by Wetlands International and IUCN--have contributed to the data summarized here. These very latest census and survey results provide the most up to date and detailed picture of heron population currently available.
Chapters discussing several critical issues in heron conservation follow, often focusing on the international nature of the problem. Many heron populations are migratory and depend upon conservation of both summer and wintering wetland habitats often located on different continents.
Effective conservation of these wetlands depends in large part on local and regional socio-economic factors. Herons, to the extent that they require maintenance of wetland functioning, should be an integral part of sustainable wetland conservation.
If there is a bigger message here, it is that species and their habitats share a common future. Herons are not only a fascinating group in their own right, but also an object lesson in this universal truth.

        Book Description

Suspend your disbelief as Anna Myers brings magical realism to the Everglades.

Ben Riley is growing restless. He feels uneasy selling the “magic” herbal elixir at his father’s traveling medicine shows. Unconvinced of the tonic’s effectiveness, Ben fears he is doing wrong by staying with his father—but where else can he go?

Murphy, the pet macaw his father has reared since before Ben was born, knows. A self-proclaimed extraordinary “seer,” Murphy receives a powerful message that he, Ben, and the professor must journey to Florida.

After telepathically convincing the professor to travel south, Murphy begins to realize the danger that awaits them there. Throughout the Everglades, tens of thousands of egrets are being killed for their beautiful
feathers, which adorn the hats of all the most fashionable women. Ben and Murphy know the killing must be stopped, but the lines between right and wrong become seriously blurred when Ben takes two orphans
under his wing who rely on feathering to stay alive.

Award-winning author Anna Myers once again showcases her talent at creating intriguing characters and page-turning drama in this coming-ofage story about courage, desperation, and hope set at the turn of the twentieth century.

          Book Description

This is the first book to deal exclusively with the Australian members of the Family Ardeidae (herons, egrets and bitterns). It gives a comprehensive, easy-to-read account of their origins, classification and biology, and explains the features that distinguish them from other birds. The book devotes a major chapter to the 14 Australian species, covering their distribution and movements, feeding, breeding, population dynamics and conservation. Some of Australia's herons have become very scarce in the southern half of the continent and are at risk of national or local extinction. In northern Australia heron habitats and resources are largely pristine and consequently this region accommodates large numbers of certain species. A final chapter on population and conservation provides a useful summary of the present status of the Australian herons, some of whom are thriving and others who are in a very precarious position.

                    Book Description

Hardbound. Carbohydrates and glycoconjugates play an important role in several life processes. The wide variety of carbohydrate species and their inherent polydispersity and heterogeneity require separation techniques of high resolving power and high selectivity such as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis (HPCE). In the last decade HPLC, and recently HPCE methods have been developed for the high resolution and reproducible quantitation of carbohydrates. Despite the importance of these two column separation technologies in the area of carbohydrates, no previous book describes specialized methods for the separation, purification and detection of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates by HPLC and HPCE.

Therefore, the objective of the present book is to provide a comprehensive review of carbohydrate analysis by HPLC and HPCE by covering analytical and preparative separation techniques for all classes of carbohydrates inclu

                          Book Description

This monograph, which is the outcome of the ASI on High Pressure Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Materials Science, illustrates new developments in the field of high pressure science. In fact, for chemists, biochemists, and materials scientists, pressure as an experimental variable represents a tool which provides unique information about systems of materials.
The main contributions to this volume present overview of the different subfields or applications of high pressure studies. In contrast, contributed papers offer more specialized aspects of various high pressure studies. The various contributions to this volume make clear the impressive range of fundamental and applied problems that can be studied by high pressure techniques, and also point towards a major growth of high pressure science and technology in the near future. The book focuses mainly on advances achieved in the six years since the previous ASI devoted to the high pressure field. The organization of this volume is as follows. The main lectures covering the three main areas of high pressure applications to chemistry, biochemistry, and materials science are followed by contributed papers. A summary of a panel discussion on the future of high pressure science and technology concludes this volume.

                              Book Description

For chemists, biochemists, physicists and materials scientists, pressure as an experimental variable represents a tool that provides unique information about the microscopic properties of the materials being studied. In addition to its use as a research tool for investigating the energetics, structure, dynamics and kinetics of molecular transformations of materials, pressure is also being used to modify the properties of materials to preserve or improve their properties.
The contributions collected here cover the main areas of high pressure research, including applications in materials science, condensed matter physics, chemistry and biochemistry. In addition, some papers offer more specialised aspects of high pressure studies. The book makes clear the impressive range of fundamental and applied problems that can be studied by high pressure techniques and also points towards a major growth of high pressure science and technology in the near future.
